Come to find out that Lung Fun Shan Country Park was established around 1998, covers about 47 hectares (117 acres) and is actually the smallest and newest country park in Hong Kong. This park supplies the densely vegetated slopes and scenic background to the residential and commercial districts of Hong Kong. There is a lot to explore and see up there. Lots of bathrooms, directional signs, picnic areas and benches as well. Don't head up there without water, for there is nowhere to buy it when in the park (or not that I saw).

Unfortunately, this country park is only a 3-star one to me for several reasons. Compared to other hikes in Hong Kong, since this is a rather easy one and close to the city, it attracts way too many people to come here on the weekends or holidays. When I came here on New Year's Day, it was almost as if you're in Tsim Sha Tsui (and I'm not kidding!) This park or trail is not quite scenic as most of the walk surrounded by trees. There are only one or two lookout points at the Peak or at Mount High West. From Mount High West, you could also see the southern HK Island on the Pokfulam side. There aren't any local grocery stores on the hike where you can stop to grab a bottle of water. Be sure to bring your own drinks, otherwise there are some water fountains along the way. Your other option is... wait till you get to the peak and try to find a seat in a restaurant at the Peak Galleria. For those who are interested in the colonial and military history of Hong Kong, be sure to visit the Pinewood Battery and the Observation Post at High West! These historical relics are actually quite nice to visit if you don't come on the weekends or holidays.

If you've read any of my reviews chances are that you came across a few parks and gardens. I love…read morethem, yeah. I must admit I'm always happy to find a little green spot where one can chill out and read or just sit and do nothing. And if it's a little hidden and quiet, I like it even more. Coming up to Stone Nullah Lane Garden requires a climb up the street and it's a little steep, but worth the workout. The garden is located at the end of the street and you have to cross it to get to the other side of Wan Chai. It's right by Pak Tai Temple and together they make for a very pretty stamp. Today however, I arrived from the top side of the park, as I walked up the stairs from the Old Wan Chai Post Office to Kennedy Road and then back down to Queen's Road East through Stone Nullah Lane. The park has different levels and at the top of it there's a sheltered space barely frequented. At a lower level there's a small playground and at the lowest level you'll find a kind of balcony with a few benches. This small park is framed by a stone made high arch, which makes it look as a monument. It could be argued that it is because the flora there is amazing, the tree branches covering the whole space and making it shadowy and fresher. Facing such a historical street and located right by the temple, the benches at the top are one of my favorite spots in this area. Yes, whichever way you arrive from you have to climb, but shadow and benches are waiting for you there anyway.

I'm thinking because this park is located near many hospitals and a rehab centre, they've decided that ramps are required. There are lots of activities for kids and adults to do. You'll find the playground near the Hospital Road entrance. There's a huge soccer field that takes up most of the park, along with some basketball courts which you'll find near the Eastern Street side. They have chess boards along the High Street side, along with lots of benches, both covered and uncovered. The bathrooms are wheelchair accessible, too. This park is on the border of all the cool and hip places in Sai Ying Pun, so if you need a time out this is a great place to do it.

This is the case for Wan Chai Park, less known and frequented than other bigger ones like Victoria Park, for example. It's a minute away from Wan Chai wet market yet it took me a while to discover it. But now that I know about it, it's become my fav green spot. It's got a little bit of everything: a pond, a big soccer pitch, an elderly training area (how cool is that?!), children's playground it's well sheltered and there is quite a lot of seating space (both benches and fences). On weekdays it's mainly old people and young guys who you can find there, especially the latter, playing soccer. On weekends it's full of kids. It's easy to find a good shadow that makes staying at the park pleasant...on a warm Sunday afternoon I went there to read trying to avoid other busy parks...and I found a quiet spot, actually close to the playground area. And the huge trees made for a great roof! Sometimes I go there without a book, just to chill out, and sit around the pond...so relaxing! This place is NICE and so much hidden paths to walk on I didn't see how far one of them went. I hope it stays lightly walked because I can't describe the full beauty in pictures. I can definitely see wedding photos taken here, and given how little damage this place has after 1 week of a Typhoon, it's a real gem to come here. To get there from the peak, you get off on the rightmost path from the Peak Tram then walk until you find a zig zag walkway up on the left. Go up and you'll hit some giant houses and a road. Creeping on couples taking romantic wedding photos because you want to explore the beautiful garden, but can't do it without getting in the way. Sorry to those 5 or 6 couples, but you might have some sweaty people sneaking around with a selfie stick in the background of your pictures. Victoria Peak Gardens is NOT the Peak. I'm seeing a lot of reviews/pictures of the Peak on this page. NO! The Peak is a cool observation point of the city crammed with tourists and surrounded by super overpriced food. Victoria Peak Garden is about a 10 minute walk up the mountain, where tourists usually forget to venture. You pass by excessive rich-people condos and lush green pastures, where people are lying on picnic blankets and taking pretty photos. Near the top of the mountain is a lovely garden (which is supposedly filled with flowers, but it was just green and brown when I went) with a fancy gazebo smack dab in the middle. No wonder dozens of people were taking wedding photos here when I went. It was absolutely gorgeous! It made me think of some sort of Asian drama fairytale ending scene, where the main characters finally confess their love and kiss each other after 30 episodes. I can practically hear the ballad playing in the background. So yeah. Come here to get away from the smog and the gaggle of tourists from the Peak to breathe in some nature. Or to sneak up on some unsuspecting couples who really don't want you there. Or to dance around/make out with your SO like you're a star in a soap opera. Don't worry, I won't judge (though the other people there might). (88/100) - 2016
