Jamie W and I were pretty much the only ones who walked into the park, which was totally fine by us. I was surprised to find out it was only built in 1991 because it felt well established as an urban oasis. Because it's on a hillside, the landscape is scrupulously terraced connected by leisurely paths festooned with flowers. The central pond was quite a draw for serious photographers with huge lotus plants, turtles sunning themselves on the rocks, and colorful schools of koi converging on the shoreline. I had resorted to the treadmill (and risked my life with it!) until a friend told me about Tamar Park. Yeah, I didn't know about it until recently, sorry! To get to Tamar Park from Admiralty, you need to get to Admiralty Center and cross the bridge until you get to the Government Offices. It's a huge, beautiful park overlooking Victoria Harbour. From the entrance of the park you can see a green large carpet. The design of the park is simple and elegant. The first time I went there was on a sunny Sunday and was delighted to have found such a place, a little away from mayhem in Central and exceptionally quiet (on a Sunday, yes!). There were groups of people here and there but I could easily find a free spot under a tree and enjoy my book. It is also a great place for those who work around Admiralty, like me. The downside is that there isn't much shelter and you may want to avoid it during the hot stuffy months. I came back at night a few weeks ago and the view is astonishing, much better than at daylight. It's probably one of my favorite spots to contemplate Hong Kong from. It's just a perfect mix of romanticism and peace. Now, the reason I wanted to check it out was to go sprinting, and you can definitely do that, both in the park, in the early morning when it is empty, or you can go down to the Central Promenade. You will find people jogging along quite often but I expected it to be more crowded. If you carry on this trail, you can reach Central Piers and Star Ferry. Whether you are runner or jogger or you simply haven't found you 'green piece' in the city, I would very much recommend you visit Tamar Park. Or take your other half there at night, he/she will fall in love with you if that hasn't happened yet!

I am generally very keen on parks, regardless of their size. It's always great to have a little…read morepatch of green in the city, a little away from the bustling city. This is the case for Wan Chai Park, less known and frequented than other bigger ones like Victoria Park, for example. It's a minute away from Wan Chai wet market yet it took me a while to discover it. But now that I know about it, it's become my fav green spot. It's got a little bit of everything: a pond, a big soccer pitch, an elderly training area (how cool is that?!), children's playground it's well sheltered and there is quite a lot of seating space (both benches and fences). On weekdays it's mainly old people and young guys who you can find there, especially the latter, playing soccer. On weekends it's full of kids. It's easy to find a good shadow that makes staying at the park pleasant...on a warm Sunday afternoon I went there to read trying to avoid other busy parks...and I found a quiet spot, actually close to the playground area. And the huge trees made for a great roof! Sometimes I go there without a book, just to chill out, and sit around the pond...so relaxing! Its locations is great for me but it's a little hidden: you can access both from Cross Lane or Queen's Road East (and climb down the stairs from there).

I'm thinking because this park is located near many hospitals and a rehab centre, they've decided that ramps are required. There are lots of activities for kids and adults to do. You'll find the playground near the Hospital Road entrance. There's a huge soccer field that takes up most of the park, along with some basketball courts which you'll find near the Eastern Street side. They have chess boards along the High Street side, along with lots of benches, both covered and uncovered. The bathrooms are wheelchair accessible, too. This park is on the border of all the cool and hip places in Sai Ying Pun, so if you need a time out this is a great place to do it.

Let me start with by saying this cool little monkey park is FREE!…read more I was buzzing around Hong Kong showing a visiting friend Hong Kong the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception around the corner on Caine Road when I said we were going to walk through the Zoological Park because it was right here. Little did I know exactly what this was and I am so glad we walked through. Like the beautiful open spaces of Hong Kong Park, this area houses the what I am calling the "monkey park" and great green open spaces. Yes, I know the caged animals can be upsetting to many who want them to be free, but if I was a monkey and my fate was to live in Hong Kong, this place would be an ideal set up. Cages, food and public areas all seemed cleaned and well cared for. This is a place to browse, learn, explore, sit, bring kids and the family. The monkeys and other squirrel, raccoon, etc. species were awesome! Nothing smelled bad as was noted in other reviews and the entire area is blanketed in trees and brush with a jungle like feel, this place was cool. Maybe things smell bad in the summer when it is really humid and hot. Bring a kid, they would love this! A lot of different monkey variatals from monkeys to orangutans. Swinging, sleeping, playing, yelling....it is a true monkey zoo! Lots of baby monkeys too...super cute! It then is connected via a subway to cross the busy Albany Road to the botanical piece of the park, including open spaces, big fountains and more trees. The place is hilly, full of stairs and not near the MTR, so make note if you or someone you are with cannot navigate this kind of terrain. Entering the park from the Caine Road side is the best way to enter the side of the park that houses all the monkeys. If you walk up the hill from the Peak Tram area, you enter the park on the botanical side first and is more uphill and more steps/stairs to get to the monkey side of the park. Starting at the Caine Road side and moving West to East makes your journey more downhill than uphill if you cross through the entire park (clearly the opposite if you go the other direction). If you long for lingering time in the outdoors and open spaces, this the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens will not disappoint. And did I mention FREE!

Follow the exotic birds' singing and you'll surely find yourself at Yuen Po Street Bird Garden…read more The high-pitched singing becomes unbearable to my ears after 15 minutes, but the bird garden itself is small enough to see in that short time. Some birds looked healthy with beautiful, vibrant-colored feathers, yet others unfortunately appeared dull-colored and matted. The depressing aspect of this bird garden is the cramped, dirty conditions of the cages. Yuen Po Street Bird Garden isn't necessarily a must-visit in Hong Kong, but it's worth a short detour if you're on the Kowloon side and already visiting the adjacent Flower Market.
