白鱔煲仔飯 (Eel Claypot) $74 HKD - Salty and pricy
Decim ..

Scoured the net like everyone hoping to find Hong Kong's best clay pot rice. Almost all results pointed to this restaurant, but I digress. First thing you notice near dinner time was a hole in the wall with plastic covers at the entrance, and a long queue formed. It left an impression of a makeshift quarantine station, but民間美食is usually found in the most unexpected of places, so we joined the bandwagon. Inside was super loud; you get an array of visitors from all over. I know I shouldn't be nosy, but mainland guest beside us was speaking so loudly about his extra-marital affair for the whole world to hear that our ears couldn't help but perk up as we subtly inched over to八卦about why it was alright for him to be involved in a harem but immoral of his wife to divorce him over for it--enjoyed hearing this self-involved bigot talk all the while judging him (so hard) and consumed our food quietly: [Hot damn! ] 炸蠔餅(Oyster pancake) $30 HKD: Best item on the menu. The red sauce and the fish sauce made it taste so heavenly as it blended in with the greasy oil still sizzling. A must order! [MEH & pricy] 白鱔煲仔飯(Eel Claypot) $74HKD: Good flavouring, but didn't quite like the soy pieces as it was overpoweringly salty. Also found it quite expensive and totally unsatisfied with only 5 pieces of thin eels. Think we got too hungry and opened pot too early otherwise the bottom would have formed a crispy shell. [MEH] 臘腸滑雞煲仔飯Chinese Sausage & Smooth $53HKD: Smooth chicken was tender but the sausage was too greasy. Points docked because no crispy rice shell at the bottom. However, the soy sauce was savoury and sweet at just the right level. While this joint was not " the best," we did enjoy ourselves "overhearing" juicy gossips of other patrons. It was a damn shame we didn't get to hear the full story, but it did make the food taste better.

This is the only spot I go to for their claypot rice dishes & fried oyster pancake. Visiting this spot in November was a great time because the weather wasn't that cold where guests line out the door for it, at least that's what my cousins in HK tell me. You can't go wrong with any of the claypot rice dishes but I do wish it had the crispy rice at the very bottom of the pot. Besides that, the oyster pancake can be heavy at first since it's all fried but if you mix it in with the rice, it should be a good combo.

Super late on this review but it was worth posting about. Be prepared for a line outside this hole-in-the-wall clay pot rice restaurant. The price for a bowl is around 58 HKD. But because of it's fame, this place is a magnet for foodie tourists. I am not sure it lived up to the hype though. After a 45 minute wait, we were brought to a small table that barely fits too. It is very crammed and loud inside but at least we thought it'd be worth it for the food but it was a bit disappointing. We got the spare rib and sausage clay pot to try. The ribs barely had any meat on them and the sausage was very dry. There was not that much meat all together, just a heaping portion of white rice. The part I love about clay pot rice is the fact the bottom creates crunchy semi-burnt rice. However, I guess this place has to power through the customer queue so quickly there's no time to really let the rice sit and cook a bit more. The rice just wasn't there for me. Even after adding the seasoned soy sauce on top, the flavors of the whole dish just didn't meet my standards. I feel like my mom could've made a better version at home. The staff of course is swamped so they're not going to pay attention to you. There are a lot of other vendors around this area, if the line here is too long, I'd suggest trying another food stall out.

Okay, I know people may hate my review but from my experience I am being generous. Since I don't speak Chinese I am glad they have a menu that was in English. I was able to point to what I want and my husband spoke in Chinese what he wanted. My pot rice order came out which we had to pay for before she gave us the food. Okay fair enough, we paid for it. Fried oysters came next which we didn't order. My husband said that is not what he ordered and pointed that he ordered the same thing I was having. The lady said okay but the pot rice never came and we were ignored. Not a good experience and the pot rice was nothing special. I will try another place next time.

Small plate of oyster pancake. Thumbs up for this !

After googling for the best claypot rice in HK, this came up to be the contender. After waiting in line for 20 mins (short compared to 1-2 hrs) we were in. The oyster pancakes are the best part of the meal. It was freshly fried and not oily. The fermented veggies were not great as it was way too salty and the veggies were really tough to chew. We ordered the sausage &chicken and the sausage&short ribs claypots. The pots looked sad without any flavours and my rice bottom was way over burnt. Similar rice at any dim sum place tasted much better. We left with 1/4 of our food finished. I don't understand what the hype was about. It's definitely a pass for me.

Storefront, and start of the typical queue out front.

This is the place for clay pot rice in Hong Kong and it's a well known factoid amongst HK foodies. There was maybe a 100 meter long line the whole time we were there, but it moves along at a steady clip, and they are geared and organized for the steady crowds. We waited maybe 35 minutes. You place your order in line as you approach the entrance. Seating at bench tables is communal and you sit on stools which is not uncommon in these tight and very casual spaces (i.e., do not expect anything remotely fancy!). We counted that the place holds about 100 people. The value and food quality here is world class awesome - we had two delicious clay pots and a vegetable dish with spicy bean sauce (fu yoew) for 118 HKD or $15.23 USD. There's no tax or tipping, so that's the whole bill. The flavor is distinctively fresh with the mild burnt flavoring of the rice typifying the fired clay pot cooking. We had one clay pot with eel and chicken and another with liver sausage and pork spare ribs. We'll probably never have a better clay pot serving anywhere else. Cash only here and they collect when the food is served. Evening hours only, so don't come here for lunch. If I ever return to HK, I will allot time to stop here again! Yelp is still growing in HK, but I'm still surprised to be the first to review this place as it shows up on other sites like Open Rice, Four Square, and Trip Advisor.

We met friends for dinner and actually went to the wrong restaurant, for there is another Star of Canton just up the street at I Square too and we went there by accident. This restaurant has an expansive and striking view of the harbor, high ceilings, big glassy chandeliers and is very spacious. There is a stage and so much room that it seems like the appropriate spot to have a banquet or wedding. It is one of those large Chinese restaurants that serves a lot of people and thus the soft goods (carpet, chairs, linens, etc) seem warn and need updating. Although I did not do the ordering and did not pay the bill, in addition to special orders of hairy crabs at an additional cost, we had a set dinner with like 7 courses for around $400HKD (which seemed like a great value, knowing all the delicious food we had). The set included their highlighted dish of Braised Whole Japanese Oma Abalone, in addition to marinated sea cucumbers, shrimp, sticky rice, a great soup with bean curd on top and although small and at the very end, a seasame rice ball that was really spectacular & a party in your mouth. Found in 1998, Star of Canton insists the tradition of the canton dishes with less oil, less salt, no MSG and no artificial colour. I like that and it is a niche in a sea of Chinese restaurant options. We had a good experience and liked the ambiance of the place, so we would reccomend and absolutely go back.

We did not know it was a 2 star Michelin restaurant, and I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, because we did not want to spend too much money on food on this trip. Upon our request, we were seated right in front of the Harbour view and were able to see the light show that start around 8pm. The most beautiful view of HK at night! We opted not to order the duck, which needs to be ordered 24 hour in advance and although I am sure quite delicious is quite pricy (HK$1,438+10%). Reservation in this place is a must! Highlights were the Wok-fried Wagyu with Green Peppers, Mushrooms and Garlic, Wok-seared Chicken Fillet with Lemon Sauce The server was so kind as to give us half servings so we could "sample" some of the more expensive items, add fried rice for substitution with the meat dishes and free desert. This flexibility in providing half portion and substitution is something i've rarely experience in a Michelin restaurant. Overall, we payed $US240 (1,900 Hong Kong Dollar) which includes the 10% service charge for two people for a michelin 2 star restaurant for an unforgettable meal! If I return to HK, I will definitely come back and try their dim sum.
