Wandering the Temple Street Night Market fresh off a grueling 16 hour flight, wholly lacking in available brain cells, I'm waylaid when the only street food at this market seems to be spicy crab for (HK)$250 and nothing else. Since my last experience with Asian night markets was in Taiwan and I would have been able to eat probably hundreds of squid and scallop skewers for that price, I am not quite willing to accept paying fancy-dinner-in-the-U.S. price for street crab. My subsequent search for a restaurant, any restaurant, that will feed me for a reasonable price so I can just go to sleep, ends at Taiwan Kitchen.
I am welcomed with a smile and an English menu. I order the pork with preserved vegetable soup noodles, plus a soy milk.
Well... the soy milk is refreshing, and not too sweet.
But the soup? Sadly, it's a salt lick, and not much else. I may as well have just thrust my face in a bag of salt and then had someone throw the rest of the ingredients at my face and see what stuck. Mostly, the incredible saltiness comes from the veggies, so I try to avoid them, which I will strongly regret later after I realize that veggies are hard to come by when eating out in Hong Kong. read more
