The broth was a little heavy on the 5-spice and I would've been fine with a cleaner broth. However, the noodles, brisket, and wontons were on-point. The brisket was tender and flavorful, and the wontons were delicate and filled with shrimp. The noodles were toothsome and weren't too soft. The set meals are a pretty good value as you can choose from a variety of entrees (noodles, rice porridge, etc.), a side dish/dessert (like vegetables, fried wontons, dessert soup), and a drink (hot soy, hot teas, etc.). I didn't go for the fried wontons but the fried fish balls were quite good. They were very hot but soft with a slightly crispy exterior. There wasn't a fishy taste to it, so it seemed more fresh. The choy sum was okay, though the broth it sat in was a seafood-based broth which wasn't really my style. Service was decent though like most places in HK, you have to flag down someone and don't expect someone to come to you. This spot was good (and clean) enough for me to not have to visit my former wonton spot, Mak Man Kee. The shrimp itself was cooked to perfection and did not have any mushy texture nor overcooked chew. The noodles were as springy as ever and definitely tasted as much as they were worth. The broth was the clear winner whether or not you're the type to add some red vinegar or not. It is a broth with clear depth and flavor that does not overwhelm the tastebuds, nor send them to monosodium glutamate shock. It was such a great meal, I am already looking to enjoy another bowl sooner than later. And of course, for all the non-seafood lovers out there, the beef brisket noodles are just as worthy. When the server noticed I was using Google Translate, she brought over an English menu. 2 of us ordered the wonton noodles and one ordered a tossed noodles dish. They were all delicious! My brother-in-law who comes to HK twice a year was thrilled to discover new restaurants with us! We had ordered the noodle set so it came with choice of green vegetables and hot drink. We order the choy sum and it was the most tender choy sum we've ever had! Service was efficient. If you want to try some really good wonton noodles, this hits the spot.

Their popularity was at an all-time high just before the pandemic and has remained one of Sai Wan's most frequent local eateries. To no one's surprise, the seating and layout are not group friendly and it can be very cramped. Sharing tables is a big possibility, and I'd come here with no more than 3-4 folks. Waiting is a common past time here, so try to aim for a pre-noon arrival. Their stuffed toasts are legendary and are indeed the real deal. The salted egg yolk toast is fun to eat and film, but the taro custard (香芋流沙西多士) is next level good. The lava that flows from within makes this the ultimate dessert item, and should be on everyone's table. Their XO stir fried radish cubes (XO醬炒蘿蔔糕), along with the XO fried rice rolls (XO醬炒腸粉) are two of my favorite items. The dim sum items are fairly standard (especially the shrimp dumplings), but the shrimp stuffed rice rolls are very good. The shrimp toast is not my usual kind of order, but this place definitely specializes in it. The service is warm and very quick with everything: taking orders, bringing food, and getting the check. Prices are not back breaking but it's a little more expensive than other comparable places. Cash is king.

That's when we discovered Paradise Dynasty, a restaurant on the 2nd floor (3rd floor by U.S. standards) specializing in Shanghainese cuisine. Intrigued by all the pictures on their display, we returned that evening with our daughter, and it was love at first bite. We ended up dining there a total of four times in the nine days thereafter! The restaurant was clean, comfortable, and filled with small tables that created a cozy atmosphere. Despite the crowds, we never had to wait for a table. The staff were consistently welcoming and courteous, making each visit pleasant and hassle-free. Menus were available both via QR code and in physical form, in both Chinese and English, complete with photos of every dish, making ordering incredibly easy. One of the standout dishes was their Xiao Long Bao, soup dumplings with delicate wrappers and flavorful fillings. We highly recommend the Specialty Dynasty Xiao Long Bao, which includes eight different flavors for a fun and tasty experience. Other favorites included the La Mian with Prawn and Pork Wonton in Signature Pork Bone Soup (Wontons with Noodle Soup), a comforting bowl featuring four plump wontons and a generous serving of noodles, perfect for sharing. We also never skipped dessert: a warm bowl of ginger soup with three glutinous rice balls filled with fragrant black sesame paste. Even though I feel like their heydey was years ago, they have still managed to stay steady as a local favorite. It's as cramped as any eatery in HK, with a few stools along the wall and tiny tables for the occasional group slurp session. The staff is usually pretty on it and they're under the assumption that most folks walking in there know exactly what to order. As a result, all the menus are in Chinese, it's cash only, and the dishes run from $30-55 HKD at this point. Cart noodles (車仔麵) are a unique staple in these parts. It is a literal mixed bag of noodles (flat, thick, skinny, etc.), toppings (seafood, meats, organs, etc.) and broth. There are as many as 20 ingredients to choose from, but most get around 3 selections (三餸車仔麵) and I usually opt for beef brisket, a helping of radish, and some of their extra salty fried fish skins. I think everyone should just get a large mixed bowl of thick noodles (大雜粗麵) and shoot for pork neck and tripe. Locals love it, trust me. Don't be intimidated by the lines. People eat and go, so the waits are usually in the 5-15 min range. If you don't speak Cantonese, be prepared to show pics on your phone and expect to pay around $45-50 per person. There are other Wing Kee locations throughout the island, but this one on Sugar street will forever be their most popular one.
