I have been here twice and have both times ordered the pork which is traditional version of the sandwich. They also have some interesting drink choices which are all Vietnamese. You can order a Vietnamese beer to go with your sandwich, line soda, or a Vietnamese coffee. The banh mi here is very good. The french bread is on point. The pate has a nice creamy texture and is not gamy. They put scallions in there sandwich. I enjoyed it but this may not be for everyone. If I wrote this review after my first visit I would say that this is the best banh mi O have had in Hon Kong. However, the second time around the bread wasn't as fresh and didn't have the crunchy exterior that I hope for in a baguette. This is probably because I had the sandwich close to dinner time. I will definitely come back when I am craving a banh mi.

Try the restaurant next door too for really good intricate vietnamese food!

What a great bar in the heart of the SoHo district in Hong Kong!…read more As an Italian expat, it was a wonderful experience to be able to get a few hard-to find cocktails and small bites in such a beautiful spot with a very definite European flair. The staff was very professional and friendly and eager to help. Italian establishments are no stranger to this section of the hood, but with only a couple of tables and limited outdoor seating, Stazione Novella might be better as a casual stop for a quick bite or a drink. Had it not been for Beer & Fish (https://www.yelp.com/biz/beer-%E5%92%8C-fish-%E9%A6%99%E6%B8%AF) closing on Mondays, I probably wouldn't have ventured in here. Turns out they have a hell of a happy hour, full of free complimentary finger foods and discounted drinks. I indulged in a variety of foods from various bruschettas, Italian hams, and deviled eggs all while taking in plenty of red wines and aperol spritz. As a result, Stazione Novella has been part of my happy hour rotation ever since. It's an easy place to start your evening and an even easier spot to score a light dinner while getting your drink on. It's never *too* crowded but I suspect that will change in time when more people find out about this place. If drinking isn't your thing, there is a surprising amount of small bites throughout the menu that everyone (but vegans!) can appreciate. Cheeses boards, salumi assortments, and paninis, the latter of which are actually legit. The bread is crispy, the meats / cheeses are filling, and prices aren't back breaking for Soho. This wouldn't be a big deal per se, but paninis are not a big sell anywhere here in HK. Even smaller than the spot is size of the staff. Usually there is one cocktail waitress running around and a guy behind the counter mixing together the cocktails or pouring wines. Contrary to some folks who believe it's strictly cash only, I can attest the place is credit card friendly. The wine selection seems to be good and the location is really ideal for people ready to rage in Soho and beyond.

Since we live in the Silicon Valley and have had our fair share of banh mi, we were very tempted to try it and to see if it is as good as the sandwiches back home. Both of us ordered a sandwich and brought it back to our hotel, which is just a few steps away from this place. The banh mi was actually pretty good. Not bad considering that Vietnamese food isn't expected to be good in Hong Kong. It just wasn't as good as it is back home. Also, it was a little bit expensive. However, no one was fazed as there was a pretty long line. It is because this particular location was featured on one of the local shows on TVB. I would say that it is worth checking out, especially if you've never had banh mi before.

Hence when I came across Vuong's (The 華僑 name is "Martin Wong" - 馬丁王), I was immediately curious. My love of banh mi got me through the door, but similarly to other Vietnamese spots, all I got was a mouthful of disappointment. Option #1 is their version of dac biet, a sort of house special that includes typical items like pickled veggies and pate, but also some really strange additions like slices of tomato and pork floss. More importantly the toasted baguette was a bit too thick, which practically ruined the sandwich. I had a few more bites before I succumbed to the notion I wasn't going to finish the banh mi. It really was that bad. So I gave them another shot. I went with chicken and pork and it was loaded with cucumbers and tomatoes. The bread was a little more tolerable this time around, but the shredded carrots, tomatoes, and cucumber was just too much like a salad in a sandwich. The meat was skimpy, but that is to be expected in HK. Speaking of salads, they have a whole section of the menu dedicated to it, but I haven't had any yet. Their saving grace -- the prices are fairly affordable. It's not exactly Viet cheap, but it's also in Jordan where nothing is terribly expensive. I'm not sure if I'll be back to Vuong's anytime soon, but I am sure there are better options out there. I'm counting on it.

There's nowhere to sit; there is a tiny standing counter inside but it's more like a nice takeaway place. They have 5 types of sandwiches; this time I got the lemongrass chicken, which was nice. I usually get my bahn mi fix from Bep but these sandwiches are a lot bigger and better value (in my opinion). They make their bread fresh, the pickles are nice and crunchy, and overall I really enjoyed it. The bagette is still not as light and airy as found in Vietnam (no idea how they get it that light), but it's the best I've found so far in Hong Kong. Convenient location, quick and easy to pick up.

I read the previous review and I was pretty excited as I got my sandwich, this is more of a booth than a restaurant but that's fine. I wanted to love this place and give it some more Yelp! Love. I unwrapped the sandwich with a sense of delicious trepidation.... at last... a great banh mi for me! I just barely bit into it and that is when I KNEW... this is not the banh mi you're looking for.... the pickles were okay but hardly crunchy by banh mi standards. The meat was actually quite good, but the problem was the bread... how could they not toast the bread?? Everyone knows that the baguette is the most important part of a banh mi, and there was no crunch as my teeth hit the bread... in fact... it was a bit... chewy... I don't mind this with a regular baguette sandwich but with a banh mi this is entirely unacceptable. So.... tasty meat ruined by mediocre pickles (they do give a good amount, too bad they're just meh) and a sad, sad baguette. Move along... move along...

The same goes for the man, or woman, that created the first sandwich. Such an incredible thing, meat and veggies between two pieces of bread, that it makes me forget how simple it is. Simple to make, however, not so simple to master. I've been going to Fresh for some years now, back before it changed its name and vibe, and I continued to go even after Subway, at half the price, offered bigger sandwiches. At fresh you got your selection of breads, cheeses, and meats all of which taste fresh (hence the name?) and unprocessed. The same can't be said for those square or triangular pieces of cheese - which are probably not far off from being actual plastic! To this day I'll pop in once a week or so and order a turkey and cheddar baguette. "Mayonnaise, butter and salad?" the waiter behind the counter asks. I take a touch of mayonnaise and the salad just to feel like I'm a healthy person rather than for the taste of it. For the five or so minutes it takes to create it I normally have a read through the weekly HK mag, or just sit and watch people walk by, feeling extremely fortunate to not have a job requiring a suit - it's 38 degrees in the shade for crying out loud! Though there are a few seats available indoors I'm normally in a rush no matter what time of day it is. Once my ordered is ready I hand over $70, snatch at the fat, crunchy baguette, and send a silent prayer of thanks to the man, or woman, who created the sandwich. Here's to the simple inventions in life.
