Another neighbourhood eatery in Happy Valley, the small community that I live in when I am back in Hong Kong.
As the name says, its a restaurant that focus in Shanghai food, homestyle Shanghai food as the shop introduction states.
My last visit was about 3 years ago, and I do not have good memory of the food, it was just mediocre at best.
This time around, we tried a few of their lunch items and also appetizers.
My Shanghai Noodle with Fish Fillet was done well, with a very mild flavour that is a characteristic of "Su Chow" food, the soup base has no pronounced fishy taste, it was seasoned very lightly but the natural saltiness of the preserved vegetable. I would call this a home cooked flavour. Not a negative comment at all, but a compliment!
XLB's skin could be a bit thinner but again, I am judging their food as homemade and not your everyday commercially produced food, so I can give it some leeway. The filling was juicy and very flavourful, not too oily!
Overall, a good choice if you wanted some variety besides HK Style Cafes & Cantonese food, Shanghai Lane is worth exploring into this narrow lane it is situated! read more
