Founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for 19th-century European elite, the city has also long attracted artists. Former resident Henri Matisse is honored with a career-spanning collection of paintings at Musée Matisse. Musée Marc Chagall features some of its namesake's major religious works. Our NCL Viva cruise ship stopped here on our return to the port of Rome, Italy. We had to take a tender from our cruise ship to the port of Nice. See my tender pics. At the port we loaded onto a tour bus, which took us to the Old Town Square area on the Mediterranean Sea. We were visiting Nice for the first time with another couple of our friends. As we were touring the old town square center, we decided to stop at the El Merkado Restaurant for a snack and some cocktails. We had a nice table for 4 outside. We ordered two of their cheese boards and some local red wine. The cheese board and local red wine was spectacular. There was lots of cheese to eat. We could not eat all the cheese. We should have ordered only one cheese board for the four of us. Service here was very good for us Americans who could barely speak French. Our total bill for both of us was 58 euro. I would return here for another cheese board. After our lunch and some shopping we took our tour bus back to the port to return to our ship. Nice was a very pretty town.

We were lucky and got a table on a whim later Sunday evening. After being seated on the patio at high top table, we actually gasped seeing the view. It's UNREAL. For the entire dinner, it's almost distracting to just keep staring out at the mountains, water and yachts looming down below. Gorgeous. The service matches the hotels 5-star expectations. Super attentive, quick, and friendly. We had drinks to celebrate a proposal and they also brought out some on the house champagne. For dinner, we actually split the blue lobster pasta. It was more than plenty for 2 people. Absolutely delicious. They bring the lobster and pasta out to mix together in front of you and ugh I am still thinking about that dish to this day. Its a hike to get up to this point. Once you reach the gated area, no cars can reach the top. Well worth the challenge to get up and it's such a unique experience. The walk up is all along the hillside and through the little mountain shops. 100% felt like I was in a movie and would love to come back to stay at the hotel. I don't think they couldn't created a better experience here between the food, menu, view, and service... I wouldn't change a thing.

It can get windy and chilly so ask for a blanket which they will kindly provide. Service was phenomenal. Highly recommend. Tip: when you leave the restaurant, stop by the bathroom across the hall in the hotel lobby. It's white marble and plays opera music...reminds you from the scene of The Shining.

Fairly tender served over creamy mashed potatoes. The sauce was sweet and not my go to for entrees, but it was a fruit sweet and toned down with herbs. Extensive wine list. I had the luburon which was fine for a table wine. My neighbors shared their bottle of 2017 gamay and I would order it instead. Bread and olives were nice starters. I liked how they cured it. Not overpowering brine with herbs. This is in the higher price range of the area, but the setting and staff is more polished. My adjacent dining patrons had the prix fixe menu. They did not love their entrees but had no complaints ( a fish and pork option). Oddly the establishment had only one bathroom.

Tip: The cuisine here is Corsican, and everything we tried on their menu looked wonderful and tasted even better than it looked :-) The atmosphere is bright and cherry; the service is exceptional, and the food just may Rock your World! After a leisurely and totally satisifying dinner, we paid the check and went back to our hotel.  The prices turned out to be very reasonable given the quality of the food and the service - I'm going to make a point of coming back the next time I'm in Nice.

The restaurant has a humble exterior (largely blocked by gelato customers), but once you descend the stairs into the dining area you are in a sheek, romantic, cellar. Intimately small but comfortable. The walls are lined with stone and endless wine bottles. The starters were all quite good. We had the snails, squid, and cheese plait. As a bonus, my waitress recommended an excellent wine to pair with the squid. It was spot on. My group shared the beef and tartafelle (forgive my spelling). The beef was succulent, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I had no idea what to expect with the second dish but it was delicious and I would certainly order again. The prior night, I had the bakes camembert when eating solo. The dish is exactly as described. It's tasty, but I'd recommend it for a group since eating an entire block of melted cheese solo is challenging. Last but not least, the wait staff were wonderful! We really enjoyed chatting with our 2 waitresses, who went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and our election of drinks. As a tourist, you really hope to stumble on a gem like this were the locals charm you and really guide your dining experience. If ever back in Nice, i'll certainly go again!

The filet was sliced and cooked perfect The potatoes were great and also nice salad came with it. Service was ok. Prices Moderate.
