Every morning (except Monday), there is a beautiful farmers' market in the middle of Cours Saleya that offers everything from herbs to hats. I initially went around 7am, while all of the vendors were setting up. Not many people were around, and it was very cool seeing the market take shape. I later returned at noon, and the street was absolutely teeming with tourists and locals alike. It doesn't take much time there to appreciate the vast cornucopia that is Marché aux Fleurs, so I highly recommend strolling down Cours Saleya during business hours! Happily, Clayton Cohn

Elton John and Steven Spielberg have owned homes here. Narrow medieval streets with winding alley ways are lit at night by old lamps which expose multi-colored French balconies, windows and beautifully colored red tiled roof buildings with rich histories. Street performers entertain in the evenings as you stroll through the narrow streets. Colorful and artistic personalities seem to gravitate to this part of town. Bars and restaurants are plentiful and diverse offering a wide range of cuisines. Some restaurants can be pricey like Le Boudoir and Di Piu but you can also find less expensive fare. It gets very hot in the summer but Old town Nice is blessed with many shade trees and the breeze from the sea is welcomed.. Small unique shops that sell local soaps, boutique clothing and perfumes can be found. There are also some more modern shops. Open air markets selling flowers, candies and sea food add much to the overall vibe of this area of Nice. I love gelato and thought the French have a nice version but I prefer Italian gelato.

Old Town Nice is the place to be for a genuine French experience. There's so many little shops and restaurants around and most of the people speak english, so it's very helpful. However, I had to dock a few stars for the service quality at the beach club itself. I understand that the venue is large and busy, but there's really no excuse for how inattentive the staff were. We were sat and told to peruse the menu, then didn't see our attendant at all. After about an hour and half later, and multiple unsuccessful attempts to catch the eye of our attendant, another group pointed their attendant in our direction so we could finally order just some water and drinks. Overall, I would highly recommend the food at Castel Plage, but I would suggest looking elsewhere on the beach for a true luxurious beach club experience.

In truth, both are worth exploring, but it can be a bit much (about 4 miles each way). If you aren't up for that, I recommend staying seaside, but make sure to cross and check out Hotel Negresco and Villa Masséna Musée on the city side. I got an early start (I was out there around 07h30 on a Saturday, and it was great. The sunrise was beautiful through the clouds, and the seaside breeze was the perfect accoutrement to mid-seventies weather. For anyone going to Nice, taking a stroll down the Promenade is an absolute must. At the very least, I would walk from Castle Hill down past the beaches (closer to 2 miles instead of 4).
