Elton John and Steven Spielberg have owned homes here. Narrow medieval streets with winding alley ways are lit at night by old lamps which expose multi-colored French balconies, windows and beautifully colored red tiled roof buildings with rich histories. Street performers entertain in the evenings as you stroll through the narrow streets. Colorful and artistic personalities seem to gravitate to this part of town. Bars and restaurants are plentiful and diverse offering a wide range of cuisines. Some restaurants can be pricey like Le Boudoir and Di Piu but you can also find less expensive fare. It gets very hot in the summer but Old town Nice is blessed with many shade trees and the breeze from the sea is welcomed.. Small unique shops that sell local soaps, boutique clothing and perfumes can be found. There are also some more modern shops. Open air markets selling flowers, candies and sea food add much to the overall vibe of this area of Nice. I love gelato and thought the French have a nice version but I prefer Italian gelato.

Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner were married here. Marc Chagall lived here creating many beautiful pieces. He and his family are buried in the cemetery at the end of the path. Look for the grave covered in stones to the right. Today, Saint-Paul de Vence is filled with so many art galleries. From classic to contemporary to pop art, it is fun to pop in and out of the galleries.

Every morning (except Monday), there is a beautiful farmers' market in the middle of Cours Saleya that offers everything from herbs to hats. I initially went around 7am, while all of the vendors were setting up. Not many people were around, and it was very cool seeing the market take shape. I later returned at noon, and the street was absolutely teeming with tourists and locals alike. It doesn't take much time there to appreciate the vast cornucopia that is Marché aux Fleurs, so I highly recommend strolling down Cours Saleya during business hours! Happily, Clayton Cohn

It's a long street where vendors of all sorts sell their wares. I got here after lunch and the socca vendor closed for the day. There were a bunch of people and vendors but not much products left. Ambiance - It's the French Riviera! A great place to watch people, both in the morning when I drink my coffee in one of the outdoor cafes, and during my daily happy hours. Well located, since we are staying a week here, we had more than enough time to visit neighboring cities and countries, but you know that because you are following. We visited Cannes (Film Festival), Eze (a crazy 1 hour uphill hike to the village!), Monaco (Monte Carlo) where I actually won $$ and had my James Bond Martini. Service - Overall good. Founded by the Greeks and later a retreat for 19th-century European elite, the city has also long attracted artists. Former resident Henri Matisse is honored with a career-spanning collection of paintings at Musée Matisse. Musée Marc Chagall features some of its namesake's major religious works. Our NCL Viva cruise ship stopped here on our return to the port of Rome, Italy. We had to take a tender from our cruise ship to the port of Nice. See my tender pics. At the port we loaded onto a tour bus, which took us to the Old Town Square area on the Mediterranean Sea. We were visiting Nice for the first time with another couple of our friends. As we were touring the old town square center, we decided to stop at the El Merkado Restaurant for a snack and some cocktails. We had a nice table for 4 outside. We ordered two of their cheese boards and some local red wine. The cheese board and local red wine was spectacular. There was lots of cheese to eat. We could not eat all the cheese. We should have ordered only one cheese board for the four of us. Service here was very good for us Americans who could barely speak French. Our total bill for both of us was 58 euro. I would return here for another cheese board. After our lunch and some shopping we took our tour bus back to the port to return to our ship. Nice was a very pretty town.

We finished our Nice trip early so decided to visit the neighboring cities; see ALL my other reviews. Top attractions in Eze, all of which we did: Jardin Exotique d'Èze: A cliffside botanical garden filled with cacti and succulents that offers panoramic views of the coast. Nietzsche Path (Nietzsche-Weg): A steep, rugged hiking trail leading down from the medieval village to Èze-sur-Mer on the coast, named after the philosopher who walked it. Èze Village: The historic hilltop center featuring stone houses, art galleries, and craft shops. Fragonard Perfume Factory: A local perfumery offering free guided tours and demonstrations. Ambiance - Okay. The bus schedules are unreliable! And there are not enough... So 100 people cramming into a bus was NOT ideal. So we decided to do the Nietzsche Path, see above. No shade in this HOT weather and it was ALL uphill. I definitely earned my wine when I got to the top! But it was still worth it when we got to the historic village on top. So much to do and see. Plus, there was at least 2 Michelin restaurants. 9.47 square km. 2100+ population (2023). Mostly tourists here, lol. Service - Self service. Price - Depends on what you do, eat, or drink. Most of it was closed because of low season, but were able to spend the 50 minutes here doing some shopping (bought some French milled soap and reproduction print of a beach chair). At the very top, the enchanted garden was open with admission. It was kinda fun walking through the cobblestone streets, pretty deserted.
