Zum Reznicek is a hidden gem located on a quiet side street in the 9th district of Vienna. We had reservations for a Friday night, and I highly recommend booking in advance, as this place fills up quickly.
The ambiance is clean and modern, while still preserving some historic features that speak to the long history of this restaurant. Recently, it has been taken over by an established duo--a master chef and a master sommelier--who offer modern interpretations of classic Viennese dishes paired with excellent wines. The service was very professional and attentive, and we even had the main course brought out by the chef himself.
The menu changes constantly, but I believe their signature Cordon Bleu is a staple. We started with the sweetbread (Kalbsbries, calf pancreas), which had an amazing crunch and a rich, deep flavor. It was served with pumpkin mousse, Brussels sprouts, and a rich butter foam--an absolutely delightful dish and our secret favorite of the evening, although every dish was incredible. Our second starter was blood sausage (Blunzen) on mashed potatoes, beets, and horseradish. The blood sausage was perfectly tender, with no overpowering iron taste--fantastic. For our main, we shared the Cordon Bleu, a veal schnitzel filled with alpine cheese, accompanied by red currant jam and a crunchy, chilled, cream-based cucumber salad that perfectly balanced the richness of the cheese. For dessert, we enjoyed the fried apple slices with cinnamon and vanilla-rum ice cream--a perfect finish to the meal.
Throughout, we relied on the expert guidance of the sommelier for our wine pairings, and we tried five different glasses, including rosé, white, and red wines from various vintages and Austrian regions. Each selection was excellent and complemented the dishes wonderfully.
Overall, Zum Reznicek is a fantastic dining experience, and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. read more
