Upon arrival we were greeted by a young woman with a cold and skeptical look, we almost left when we entered. She was a little put off when we stayed and sat in the only open section which was smoking and we asked for English menus. One of our party spoke German which was very helpful. The waitress/bartender warmed up as we ordered our drinks and food. This is a very local small restaurant. Good beer. We were accepted and treated well for being visitors.
Note that this is a small local cafe, not an upscale restaurant, but the food is made with the home cooking feel and taste that is truly unique and why I rated it so high. The menu consisted of authentic local Austrian cuisine. The decor was rustic and worn as you would expect in a local cafe.
The beer (Gosser) was wonderful.
I ordered Beef Goulash topped with a fried egg, sausage, bread dumpling (semmel) which is day old kaiser rolls chopped put in chicken broth drained formed into balls and steamed, not too flavorful but a traditional starch for the dish. I thoroughly enjoyed this dish.
Others in our party ordered Cordon Bleu with French fries. Schnitzel with ham cheese scalloped with fried egg and fries. Ham and cheese toast - open faced ham and cheese tomatoes and cucumber on thin light rye bread (farmers bread). Chicken Melba - chicken fillets in a peach sauce with cranberry jam and white rice. Turkey cordon Bleu with French fries.
Everyone enjoyed their dishes and savored each bite.
Desert was unique and flavorful. I had Cheese curd strudel, similar to a similar desert we had in Hungary recently. Completely enjoyed this desert with my coffee (espresso). Others in our party ordered the following desert a pancake (crepe) with chocolate and nuts with whipped cream.
I would love to visit again. read more
