Very cool food truck park over by UTSA with some very good Venezuelan food! The Arepas Zulia's Kitchen is 2 fried arepas with 3 meats, cheese, slaw, and special sauce. Very good! They have several other menu items that definitely look worthy of a try. The folks running the food truck are very nice and will help with suggestions. Swing by and check them out! Carne Mechada - Shredded Beef Empanda

The staff were very friendly and although it was not busy, the food took a little while. They have nice outdoor seating, which is good because during this pandemic we do not stay inside of restaurants. We got the Carne Mechada - Shredded Beef Empanada and the Cachapa - corn pancake stuffed with cheese and butter. The empanada was good, not the best I have had, but good. The meat is inside a fried corn crust. It was hot and fresh. The meat was tender and juicy, but I would have liked more flavor. The outside was a little sweet, crisp, and crunchy. One is really not enough, get 2 or something else off the menu to compliment it. The Cachapa was really good, but way too expensive. Just 1 is $8.99. The corn pancake is sweet, thick, and fluffy. It had a great flavor. The cheese is gooey and also really good. These are also not a meal, so at that price I will not be making a habit out of getting them.

I went for the Yelp Elite event that Zulia's hosted and kicked myself for being overzealous in wanting to order. They have one of those a-frame sandwich menu boards and like a dork I only looked at one side. I missed a whole slew of offerings on the other side, so that's my first tip. Slow down and read the ENTIRE menu. What I DID order was delicious. We had the Arepas Zulia's Kitchen, patacones, and tequeños. I don't think I've ever had tequeños, which are a cheese-filled breadstick. The bread was fluffy and the cheese cheesy, so you should get it. Everyone in the family agreed that the flavors were on point, meaning: there was actual seasoning and flavor in each of the menu items. My favorite was the Arepas Zulia's Kitchen which is a Venezuelan arepa sandwich packed with meats. The only gripe I had was that the edges of the arepas were pretty hard to chew through. That usually happens when the arepas are older. Either way, we'd definitely return to try out the other side of the menu.

The arepas were delicious! It is a huge portion, after eating the arepas there was lots of meat and filling left to eat with a fork. The tequenos were good too, I liked the spicy sauce. I would definitely recommend the arepas!

Came here on a Thursday night, no line, which was nice. We ordered an empanada and arepa. The empanada was my favorite: the dough was slightly sweet, very crispy, and when paired with the savory chicken filling, it was perfect. The flavors are super bold here and tasty. My one qualm is that the man making the food wasn't wearing a mask, though the cashier was. I definitely prayed before I ate and didn't get sick (I waited over two weeks to write this review). I would definitely go back, just perhaps after the pandemic is over.

The empanada's y'all! I don't think I've ever had a Venezuelan empanada before. It blew me away. Zulia's was one of the many food trucks at the Block. And even though I rolled up on a Friday evening, it wasn't crowded at all. I hadn't been to the Block during covid and was unsure how busy it would be. The employee was super nice and even with her mask on, her happiness exulted out and I appreciated it. I ordered a cheese empanada and papas con queso pastelito. And picked the spicy dipping sauce (vs mild). So this empanada was huge! Definitely unexpected. Also, it smelled a little sweet and I wondered if this was more like a dessert dish. No, it was incredibly savory, with a nice crisp outside and a soft, not over gooey inside. The ratio of fried to cheese was a great balance, with neither being overpowering. The sweetness I smelled was very light and I almost didn't notice it while indulging. I enjoyed the pastelito, as well, but the empanada blew it outta the water, by far. It was smaller and the shell didn't mesmerize me the same way. The dipping sauce did have a little spice to it, but nothing too wild. I enjoyed the additional flavor it brought. When I ordered them, I expected them both to be small and that I would still be hungry afterwards. This was not the case. I gobbled both things up and found them to be nice and filling. I still can't believe how good that empanada was. I hear that the meat options are pretty good, as well. The rest of their menu is pretty meat heavy, but that's okay, I'm just gonna keep ordering the best queso empanada!

I had been to Zulia's a while ago and wasn't super impressed but I was excited to give it another try. I'm glad I did! I haven't been to the Block since before the initial shutdown in March, so I was excited to visit again. Unfortunately it was too cold to stay, but my empanada warmed me right up. Per their recommendation, I went with the shredded beef empanada. I got the mild salsa and had a coke on the side. I could tell the empanada was fresh and hand made because it took about 7-8 minutes from when ordered to get it in my hand. The empanada dough had some crunch while also being soft on the inside. It also had an inherent sweetness that was further brought out by the salsa. The mild salsa textures reminded me of tartar sauce, but had a sweet, creamy jalapeño vibe. I think next time I'll try the spicy for an extra kick. I saved what was left for my Thanksgiving leftovers. The beef was flavorful and when they say shredded, they mean it. It kept coming with each bite I took I will say the empanada alone wasn't enough so order two for your meal another one of their menu options. I can't wait to visit again and try some more of their menu items.

First time having Venezuelan food and let me tell you it's my new fav!!!! If I lived in SA I would go here as many times as I could, every item was amazing! Not only was the food good but the service was better. We had asked for no ham in our patacons and by accident there was a slice in one of them, went up to the counter to inform them. Immediately they were extremely sorry and made a new one for us as well as gave complimentary cheese sticks as an apology. She was super sweet and the food was amazing also very filling had to take left overs home because couldn't finish all of it. But let me tell you still tasted amazing the next day! Highly recommend this local spot if you are ever in SA!

Sunday afternoon we hungered for quick, savory lunch fare. But we hungered for something out of the ordinary, so we motored to Zulia's Kitchen renowned for their Venezualan sandwiches. Zulia's is actually a food truck, and can be found at "The Block SA Food Truck Park", near UTSA. But first a word about the Food Park. I had imagined a verdant, lush park scene, with manicured lawns and plantings, shaded by majestic oak trees. Well, my significant mistake. The "Park" is actually just a smallish lot, with picnic tables, a small stage, space for half a dozen food trucks, and parking for a dozen cars. We smiled, for at the entrance to the diminutive parking lot, one spies a sad, leaning shed covering a wooden bench, a sign offering "valet parking". Within the fenced grounds, to the right is a permanent, covered, significant pavilion, with a permanent bar offering beers, mixed drinks (Marjan sampled the Bloody Mary, I, the Blue Moon on tap) and facing half a dozen or so picnic tables. Television sports feeds and energetic piped music are offered for the patrons. There are probably another dozen picnic tables in open air, affixed umbrellas at the ready. I should not describe the grounds as cosmetic, but honestly, when filled with reveling college students on a warm night, who would even notice? But now about Zulia's. Two masked gentlemen tending the counter and the grill, super friendly, engaged us in lively conversation, their Spanish cadence, alliteration, and vocabulary revealing their South American background. Fun!! We ordered the patacon, and the arepa llanera. The patacon is definitely intriguing, as it is a menu described sandwich, but in lieu of bread, flattened, fried plantains cover the treat north and south. Inside, find shredded brisket, dressed with cheese and a delicious cole slaw just oozing with mayo juice. The brisket was a little dry, but when touched with the juices, well, just awesome. The plantains were cooked to perfection, and if one has never enjoyed this starchy cultivar, brace yourself for a different and delectable treat. And here is testimony truth: Marjan does not like plantains, but she totally enjoyed these flattened bananas. I had not eaten the plantain as girdle for a sandwich, but this combination really works! And friends, be prepared with many napkins, because you are going to have the sauce literally dripping down your mouth and hands. Perhaps a bib would be in order?? Marjan and I also shared the llanera, which is a sandwich of chicken and beef nestled twixt a thick, cornmeal, tortilla-like muffin. The menu listed a topping of avocado, but alas, we found only a stunted, meager "Charley Brown" sliver sitting on the meat. The "muffin" we considered a bit doughy. True to form, Marjan ordered the llanera as "spicy", but I think we received only forme fruste spicy. To the point, Zulia's spicy sauce wasn't... well...spicy at all. This sandwich, unhappily, lacked taste bud pizzazz. It seems the arepa llanera is a favorite Venezualan sandwich, but we unanimously preferred the patacon. We would return again, as there are other interesting offerings on Zulia's menu. So if you would hunger for fare departing from the usual food truck tacos or BBQ, work your way over to Zulia"s, and sink your incisors into the patacon. Be adventurous! Grab a taste of Venezualan food...from Venezualans!! Enjoy!!

And more items still to try on the other side of the menu standee

One and done. Checked out Ernie's Patio Bar for the first time and decided to try this truck out…read morefor some dinner. Big mistake. The photos and descriptions on their truck and menu look amazingly mouthwatering. Naturally, we ordered based on that. What we received was NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, like what we saw or read. Unfortunately, I didn't get good pics because it was already dark. DH ordered the Cubano Sliders. 4 sliders with fries, and he opted for the garlic Parmesan fries. We've had plenty of sliders in our lives, and these things were TINY. They looked like delicious sliders in the menu photo, but you know the chicken minis you can get at Chik-Fil-A? That's how big they were. One or 1 1/2 bites each. Super small. The fries very garlic-heavy, but we like garlic so that wasn't too terrible, but the fries themselves were not good. Too crisp and dry inside, they just snapped off when you took a bite. The other dish was Pollo Guisado. I'm not denying what "guisado" style chicken is, and in my photo it is pretty accurate, but the photo they display- which was what I wanted- is completely different. Couldn't be more opposite! Their photo and description showed whole pieces of chicken with grilled peppers and onions, rice on the side. Looked pretty delicious. The young girl who took my order said they could do vegetables but it's extra. Huh? Ok, but the picture with the vegetables looked great so I went with it. She asked which beans I wanted (not in the menu photo) but I chose to skip the beans. What I received was a pile of pulled chicken (found a few bones inside!) with rice, some previously frozen mixed vegetable blend (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots) that tasted way off, and fried plantains whose dominant flavor was the oil in which they were cooked. No whole pieces of chicken, no grilled peppers and onions, nothing in any way resembling what they advertised on their truck. For the two meals, it cost roughly $31. Not worth it in any way whatsoever. FWIW, our friend ordered a burger from the other truck and enjoyed it. We enjoyed Ernie's itself but the next time we go, we'll either get a burger from the other truck or get better food down the street. We were so hopeful for this one but it's a hard pass from here on out.
