We arrived around 430 pm ish, midweek, and basically had the place to ourselves for a bit before the dinner crowd. The older gentleman that worked there gave us free rein to sit wherever we liked, and menus followed. Their menu was quite interesting, flavors and dishes from Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Mexico. Everything sounded good! After debating for awhile on what to order, we decided on: Tacos Hondurenos- excellent! A good size portion of 4 rolled crispy tacos, think taquitos, filled with seasoned chicken and topped with their house made slaw, pico de gallo, and sauces. Their slaw was delicious , with a bit of sweetness to it. Definitely filling. Chancho Asado Nica - Absolutely delicious and packed with flavor. The pork was soo tender, I don't know what it was marinated with or how long, but OMG, the flavor was incredible! It was accompanied by rice and beans, their house made slaw, a fried cheese, and sweet plantains. I combined a little bit of everything into a bite and all the various flavors just merged merrily. Not a speck of food was left on my plate lol The food may have taken a bit to arrive to the table, but well worth it! I use to frequent this place when they had a food truck set up on Potranco Road which seemed to always be busy. It might be less busy now as the construction worker foodies that made up most of their clients have dropped off now. However, coming to their brick and mortar location is more convenient for me as I enjoy having my lunch in an AC environment opposed to outside in the Texas heat. The menu is also expanded which I do like. I went with the Pork Frintanga plate. Pork is very tasty and chewy which is a nice touch to me. Add in the sweet plantain and fried cheese and this dish was definitely a winner. Big change up from the food truck meals of mainly papoose, which are a great food truck item. Service is a bit quiet, due to the language barrier, and their lack of speaking English probably hurts the business for non Spanish customers. We ordered beef and cheese pupusa, nica meal- comes with rice with red beans, fried pork belly, fried plantain and cassava served with side of pickled cabbage and carrots served on a big platter. My husband got the Carne asada and rice served with corn and flour tortillas. The corn tortilla is thick and flavorful where you can actually taste the corn itself. It was served hot and fresh. We love the corn tortillas bec it's thick doesn't fall apart like other places we tried and has a really good flavor. There's plenty of parking and you're sat immediately. Every once in a blue moon, co workers get it right. This was such a treat. I'm a huge fan of Central American food. I had the carne asada Salvadorena, and a jalapeno con queso/pollo con queso pupusas. I truly believe that Central American and Non Mexican(ie cuban) restaurants seem to take pride in the asada they serve. It's always perfectly seasoned and cooked. It's usually some form of flank/skirt steak. I can't count how many tex mex places I've been that serve you either the wrong cut of meat, over cooked meat , or an under seasoned mess. This one was spectacular. I would come again just for that. It came with some of the best white rice I've had in a while. I'm bringing my rice freak midget to try it next time. I know he would approve. The only gripes I have are trivial. It's just a personal preference for me, I've just never been a big fan of refried beans. They were not very good to boot either. I got excited when they said they had home made corn tortillas. Hear me out, they were great, but they were waaaaayyy too thick. I could've made 4/5 tortillas from those two. When they are that thick, they feel more like a Gordita. Too much masa was a bad thing in this instance. The pupusas were good. Well the jalapeño and cheese one was outstanding. The chicken one was just a hot mess. I was conflicted on that one. One bite I liked it, the next I was confused. I thought it had too much going on. Went the other day because I had been craving the pupusas. I've been there several times before & had no complaints until now. The elderly man at the counter was as slow as molasses. It seemed like they only had 1 cook & there were several families. The wait was long to get our order. Several people as well had long waits at first just to get menus & then to get their drinks. The food wasn't as good as before & when I got up to ask for a small to go box the man at the counter walked by me 3 x, never acknowledging me. He passed once just to leave menus to one table, then came back retrieved a soda & took it to the same table. The next time he came back to retrieve a fork. He could have done all that at once. Finally I was able to ask him for the to go container that I wanted. I've had bad service before at other places but not like this. I won't be going back again. This place is very clean and well decorated. It's a little small for a very large group. Tables are for two people but they put them together to accommodate a small party. More than 10 persons, you may need to call ahead and possibly reserve. My steak came cold so I told the waiter of it and took my plate to heat the meat. My husband and I absolutely adore El Buen Paladar! Every time we come here, it feels like a treat. I always order their pupusas, and they remind me of home -- the dough is the perfect consistency every single time. My husband loves their carne asada Nicaragüense plate, and I'll admit, I often sneak bites off his plate because it's just that good! The restaurant itself is always spotless -- both the dining area and the bathroom -- which shows how much care they put into their place. One time they were out of nachos, and the owner/chef went above and beyond by substituting my favorite Mexican rice free of charge. Came here after reading an article about this restaurant months ago. I was excited to try pupusas from what seems to be an authentic Salvadoran restaurant. The service was quick. The ambiance was small. We picked up a couple of different pupusas to try out. The pupusas were delicious, especially the Revuelto one. FIRST TIME VISIT! Mind you, I've visited their food truck many times and was so glad they were just down the street! I love their pupusas WITH TONS OF CURTIDO and salsa, platanos con crema, and those tamales wrapped in banana leaves. That's some good eats! The worker at the drive thru window recognized me as a customer of their food truck and cheerfully greeted me. Apparently, the family has sold their food truck business about a month ago and has moved into this brand new space (on the far westside) on Potranco near the 211... now just up the street! Oh, joy of joys! They also have Mexican food, so today I ordered a plate of carne asada mini tacos for the hubby, 2 pupusas de revuelta (beans, chicharrones and cheese) and a plate of fried plantains (platanos) with crema, beans and a hunk of what I'm guessing to be Salvadoran cheese for yours truly. No, I wasn't messing around today. Beware of the orange colored habanero salsa, IT'S HOT! The curtido (pickled slaw) is as delicious as I remember from the food truck and the passion fruit drink is AMAZING. I did not care for the Salvadoran cheese, probably an acquired taste. Hey, I get it. I'm Hawaiian and I love poi but don't always recommend it to non-locals for the same reason. I finally found a place that has the best pupusas!! I've been looking for a place like this for a whole year. It's a lil food truck located next to a car shop. It has a lil blue tarp that you can't miss. Parking is sort of limited but I think it's ok to park at the car shop since that's where I parked and I wasn't told anything. The staff are really nice and the lady makes everything fresh. My mouth is watering just thinking about it and I had 5 pupusas from there less than 15 mins ago. My wife ordered 1 chicharron (pork rinds) and 1 Loroco (green vegetable/flower). I ordered 2 frijol y queso (Bean and Cheese) and 1 queso. After eating we realized they were soooo good we ordered 3 of the loroco and 1 of the chicharron. The loroco was by far my favorite and my life loved the chicharron. Now that doesn't mean the frijol and queso ones weren't good we just really enjoyed the other ones more. All the salsas and the cabbage you put on top are just amazing and filled with flavor. Great place to get Central American food. They specialize in El Salvadorian and Nicaraguan food. I am a Nicaraguan and loved the fried cheese, gallo pinto, and pork plate. It tasted just like my grandmothers cooking. The pupusas were great too, can't wait to go back and try the Nacatamales on the weekend. This place recently opened near our neighborhood so we decided to try it. We were intrigued by the variety of dishes from Latin America, they have menu options from Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Honduras. The place is small but it is decorated very traditionally. One thing I would say is that after ordering it took forever to get our food! The staff seemed aware of this so they were very attentive while we waited, but once we did get the food we realized one of the dishes was missing. Salvadoran here...SKIP this place, these are by far the worst pupusas I've ever had--I hate to say it. I ordered two pupusas revueltas, which should have equal parts beans, chicharrón and cheese, but as you can see from the picture, these were loaded with a sloppy cheese mess w barely a hint of something brown, I'm assuming was the "chicharrón". The price per pupusa is $3.75, which is INSANE. I also ordered a side of plátanos maduros w crema. The plátanos were cold and not ripe-/they were hard. I also had a cebada drink, and that tastes fine, it comes in a powder, so it's hard to mess that up, but a 32oz drink was $6. Including tax and tip, this meal was $20. That's bananas. I traveled over 3000 miles to try this restaurant. I discovered they existed a little over a year ago, and when I came to visit family I asked them to take me. It was totally worth the trip. This place has decent food but the natural drinks here are not good, they have plenty of options of drinks they're just not what to be expected. Like the horchata, it's a Salvadoran place I get that so the drink is made different with bananas and it's my fav horchata BUT they don't make it Salvadorian here, I can tell they put chocolate abuelita and it's a strong taste of it but not the banana part. What an amazing hidden gem. I visited today with my sister and her kids and everyone ate every morsel on the plate. The steaks were on point and full of flavor. There were explanations of all the dishes in English and Spanish in the menu, as well as photos of most dishes, which was very helpful! There was Spanish language music playing and a big painting of a village in El Salvador on the wall, plus other colorful decorations. It is easy to find both smaller items such as pupusas (ordered individually with about eight different fillings to choose from) and large portions such as nacatamales. On 1/23/2024 Luis said he has finally got good tasting pupusas in San Antonio, TX. Hot, fresh and friendly and clean. The only thing he would do differently next time is have the Curtido y tomato sauce onbeheerd side so it would not make the yuca soggy.. the jalapeño y pollo pupusa was something he didn't know was missing from his life.
