A big roach was crawling on the wall and table. The waiter brought it up to the manager and still had to pay. THEN saw one putting tartar sauce in cups without using gloves. Not going back and calling the health department. read more

I've loved this place for twenty five years now. This time I got a small Fish Ceviche, a Veracruzano Plate w/ fries, and a Michelada with a cauguama de Cerveza Famosa (Cerveza Gallo en Guatemala) Everything was truly excellent. Food was great, service was great, I highly recommend this La Playa. read more

Ordered 3 shrimp cocktails and a ceviche all smalls total was $70 12-15 minute drive home Expecting my ceviche in the bag and there is no ceviche so I drive back without the food thinking they would just give me my ceviche because they forgot it manager says there's nothing she could do because I don't have the bag tells me to FaceTime someone at home to show them that they forgot it so my girlfriend shows them over FaceTime & they said ok we'll get you one , wait 10 minutes for the ceviche me being pissed off I forget to check so when I got home for the 2nd time it's just a shrimp cocktail read more

I hadn't been to this place in years. Got the urge for some fish. It was as good as the first time.

I have always been a fan of La Playa. I thought they had the best seafood in town. And my last two trips have been a disappointment. I think they must've changed owners because the shrimp isn't up to the same quality that it used to be the fried fish is still very good but the Mexican cocktailwas not the same high-quality as before. I hope they're not trying to cut corners because it shows and the prices went up a lot too. I don't mind the price increase but the quality isn't the same. read more

Seafood and more served hot and fresh. Unlike other restaurants the shrimp cocktail is served with fresh shrimp not frozen. It was great. I also ordered the fried shrimp plate which comes with fries. It seemed like the fries were also battered a little. It was different but in a good way. Sweet tea was also good. Service was great. We will be back. read more

Not the best but not the worst seafood in San Antonio but that is not the reason for the two star review. The one thing this place lacks is customer service. The waitstaff is friendly when they come to your table eventually. The wait was long to be acknowledged when you enter. No refills on drinks because staff will forget you're there. My husband ordered a fish and shrimp place with fries but plate came with rice instead. When they drop off your food the bill is automatically placed on your table which makes you feel rushed out. The stuff crab was definitely store bought and lacked any real crab flavor. It was like eating a wet hush puppy in a crab shell. Very disappointed but maybe they had an off day. read more

La Playa Restaurant - Stuffed crab - Mexican Near Me - San Antonio, Texas

Not as good as it used to be! We used to love going to this location as it is considered the original restaurant. Talk about shrinkflation! The shrimp is smaller, as well as the fried fish. I ordered the quesadilla plate and was still hungry afterwards! Today was my last visit at this restaurant! I'll go to the Lighthouse from now on. read more

I have not been here in a while but wanted to see if anything new. It was pretty much the same. Place is not to big but way to noisy between the people who are present and the little trio musicians it just echos throughout the restaurant. We were seated and brought menus, after we received our drink order she took our lunch order and brought our chips and salsa. It was pretty quick considering it was packed. We order a plate and decided to divide it between both of us. The food was delicious and their stuffed crab was so good with chunks of crab in it not like other businesses I have been too. Only issue we had was the waitress never came back to our table after we were served. So never received refills on our drinks and we had a shrimp cocktail that we didn't touch so needed a to go container and we had to flag someone down to get it for us. Price was very reasonable. I just forgot to take enough pictures but will next time. read more

Took my buddy here for the first time. We had it all. Soup, popusas, seafood. The soup had maggots in it, several. We told the lady and she said no, that is cilantro... Look, we know guisano when we see it. We saw them still serving the soup but stirring it around too check for more maggots. They refused to remove the soup from our tickets, offered no discount for the disgusting experience. Did not finish our food. Disgusting. Need to be shut down. read more

Small place, can get crowded and tables maybe a little close to each other. Staff was okay waiter never came back after she brought us our food but like I said they get very busy. I order grilled fish and shrimp with fries for $13 and my plate was really rationed. read more

The food is great quality on a good day and most filling but the price for 2 plates is at least $25 after taxes and depending how fast you get full it may not be worth the money. the amount of food isnt justified by its price. also it helps to know some spanish even if you arent a natural because they pride themselves in speaking mostly spanish. this location is great to come to once in a while but dont make a habit out of it because it will leave your pockets empty and the only thing they love is your money. they only see you as a cash cow. all they want is your money. it would be a lot easier if you just mailed them your paycheck directly so they could spend your money more easily. some of these waitresses are sluts. I know this for a fact because as I was taking my order to go one of the younger waitresses who was the best looking one there was looking at me like she wanted me to bang her. she was very outspoken in the way she admired me out loud to her fellow waitresses. I wanted to as well but this was bad timing for her to give up herself like that to me. keep in mind I'm ugly as well and make poverty look like it is fashionable and spent money i didnt even have buying overpriced food. so she must have saw something in me that she like enough because I sure as hell know i had nothing to offer her. this location has also been known to rip people off every which way possible which comes as absolutely no surprise to anyone that does know better. they love to flex their creative muscles in a variety of ways to make you spend more. read more

Best frog legs and seafood soup around. Been eating here for years and it never disappoints

Flavor overload!!! Love the shrimp quesadillas. The pupusas are super delicious, all kinds of foods going on. Not just Mexican food. Whole fried fish, Salvadoran style, Mexican cokes. Try it!! read more

Horrible the people working there have poor service and the restaurant it self is disgusting I went there for dinner with my wife the lady cleaning tables was spraying bleach like crazy on top of a dirty table with plates still on the table and then the table I sat at I had to clean my self the floor was disgusting full of food and trash and they still let people in and sit like that I know if they got inspected they would be shut down ASAP read more

This restaurant is too busy , not organized. As for safety precautions, the staff is eating behind the counter. They have too many people waiting inside for their to go orders. Which takes even just as long even if you order ahead. I had to ask for my order twice. Not sure if I'll be coming back. read more

A friend and I went here the other day for lunch. He's not from here but wanted to try Mexican seafood and had heard about La Playa from somewhere. I thought it was just ok. I ordered fish tacos. Look, I'm not too picky when it comes to my food, and you can't really do fish tacos badly, but they're definitely not La Playa's specialty. The fish came fried, wrapped in a corn tortilla, covered in lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. It was missing a key ingredient: SAUCE. As a result, the dish was really dry and under seasoned. They needed like a chipotle mayo or something to bring the dish together. As a result, I just smothered the fish in hot sauce and left the fixings on the plate. It's not that the food was bad, it's more that someone should have thought holistically about the dish they served. It came with some mediocre rice and beans. We came during lunch and it was a little busy but not too bad. Our server was frequently absent but not to the point where it was bad, though I didn't get a refill on my water. I'll chalk it up to a bad, busy day for her. I'd prolly give La Playa another shot, although perhaps not this location. **As a bonus, they have Salvadorian dishes on the menu which is pretty awesome. read more

If going to La Playa was about service, I would not go. The wait staff at this place was pretty indifferent to my existence. Not a lot of drink refills and no friendly service. However, I did find the food to be good. I love that you get chips and salsa, as other restaurants charge now. The chips are crispy and a little thicker. Boyfriend and I ordered a family order of fried fish. Holy cow, it was A LOT of fish. The fish was delicious. The fries were not. Pro tip here: if you are going for a Saturday dinner, you better get there early. We were on a weird eating schedule and showed up around 3:30 p.m. By the time we left at 5 p.m., there was a line of people waiting. So, if you want to eat there, be prepared to wait or show up early. read more

Ive been here one time. My brother-n-law found this restaurant and liked it so we went as a big group. A little far from where I live but it was worth it Since I moved here I always craved mexican seafood. Maybe its where I live that I never saw any restaurants. ANYWHO so i am happy to have come here... food was very affordable & good. Very close to the seafood I had growing up in Los Angeles. Ive got to say their MICHELADAS were soooo good. hard to find good micheladas in SA. and cheap $3 bucks cant beat that i cant wait to come back PS- a little mexican Norteno group showed up to sing randomly. made my day read more

Worst restaurant I've been too I didn't even eat there! I went to the restroom there was poop all over the toilet and ON THE FLOOR!!!! I had to tell 2-3 different people before they finally send someone to clean it! Then I waited for 25 minutes until I finally left because my waitress kept ignoring me and wouldn't get my order even though I heard another waiter telling her to come to me read more

Excellent food and good drinks! But the staff are super busy that they take a little longer to come back. But I loved the food...

Pretty good food. The cheese enchiladas and rice are delicious. The shrimp cocktails are great, the shrimp is always nice and tender. Been coming here a few years. They've messed our order probably once but hey they're only human. Corrected the problem and it was good. Defiantly recommended. No it's not a fancy place bit the food is great. One tip I have. If you're hung over i would probably not come on a busy day. It gets crowded and loud. read more

I'm quite lenient on submitting bad reviews because restaurants usually have bad days. Moving on..... I'm disappointed with this place because the minimum for using debit is $10. Which leaves no much room to have variety at a low price. Once my order has been complete, I had the #26 (fish fillet, shrimp and oysters) it was BLAND. There was no salt nor seasoning to the food. The seafood tasted like it was frozen and they just deep fried to order. The fries were mediocre. read more

Business has kind of gone down hill if you plan too heat here expect to be their 2 hours or so. One waiting for waiter and two for the order to come. Also if you get take out they don't mean the time they say they say 25 min they actually mean a hour. And no rush to hurry even though your waiting longer then you should. Sucks it's good food but service is bad now. read more

(FOOD POISONING WARNING) I placed an order to go on Friday, July 17, 2020, As we were eating it we noticed a weird taste on the shrimp cocktail, we were putting Cholula sauce so we didn't notice the weird taste after our third cracker when my husband mention that it had a weird taste I had a taste without the sauce and yes it was confirm that it was not good, so we immediately stopped eating it and proceeded eating with our grilled fish that had no taste and it was Not tender, so at that point we did not eat....With in 30 minutes I noticed my stomach was hurting really bad I developed severe diarrhea that entire night, at around 2am in the morning I stared vomiting I got so sick I did not sleep the entire night I have never been that sick, all day Saturday I was in bed so sick still had diarrhea, so I call the restaurant at around 10:30 am asking to speak to the owner l was told she was not there until 8 pm "hmmm" so I Left a message so that she can call me back and of course she did not, so I called back around 8:30pm and spoke to the manager instead, The very first thing she mention is that I had to go and get tested for COVID 19, I said for diarrhea and vomiting that is not one of COVID symptoms that's how ignorant she was, she was so unprofessional she was the rudest lady in earth she mentioned that it was impossible being that I was the only one that got sick " by the way I did mention my husband also got sick but not as bad as me" she did not care at all she was basically accusing me of lying, so I asked her that in the very lease I deserve a refund so she ask me if I had my receipt I said no it was not given to me because I paid in cash, that resturant when you pay in cash they don't give you one so because I did not have one, she said no receipt no refund loud and clear with anger and she repeat it like three times she was the most ugly person ever "so very rude" I don't understand how she got the managers position. I also mentioned that I had already called the health department and she said you can call anybody you want "I don't care" including Trump how RIDICULOUS is that. My food that I still have was proves of purchase. The reason why I called Health department, for one how sick I got and second I had got food poison before from this restaurant about 4 /5 yrs ago and had got food poison but with severe vomit that was on our way home, and yes that same night I called to let them know. My husband really wanted some shrimp cocktail, and I said no I still remember getting sick, and he said well let's try it again maybe they improved, ohhh God what a mistake because I really paid for it this time severe, I will never never will go back. WARNING IF YOU PAY IN CASH PLEASE ASK FOR A RECEIPT read more

Food seems to be pretty authentic. Service was a little slow, not sure if it's a normal thing or just a random occurrence. Food was tasty and fresh. read more

It was awesome food . The service was good and was the atmosphere. The COVID safety was clear and enforced .

Not to shabby!! Kinda felt like they were nickel and dime for every little thing. If you wanted more chips you had to pay extra. Ha! Shrimp cocktail was ok, nothing to exciting. I would go there again but not soon. I just wasn't to excited about it. read more

My parents have been ordering fish here for years. It's cheap, they serve large helpings (the kids meal is enough for an adult, w/ left overs) and it's oooh sooo good! It's not overly seasoned and the fish is always flakey and soft, def worth checkin gout! read more

The pupusas were delicious, service was fast and the atmosphere was very relaxed. I didn't like that there was a man selling stuff to the customers. read more

One of very few places in San Antonio to get Salvadorean food. They knock it out pretty good too. But orders of things like papusas do take a while since they are made to order. Their seafood is also on point. Consistent everytime we've gone. Price is real good and the portions are well worthy of being called San Antonio sized plates. It's in a bit of a barrio type area, their neighborhood vendors that usually pop in to slang goods and of course there mariachi and picture guys doing the rounds. I'm a regular and would recommend this place to anyone looking for seafood or Salvadorean food in San Antonio. read more

The food is good, I recommend the mariscos soup & the pupusas . The only downfall is that the service is some what crappy :-/ and slow.

It's a decent restaurant to dine in if your on that side of town. They have delicious carne gusida and enchiladas. The atmosphere and comfortable. It's a great place for large groups and families. They have reasonable prices. If you are reading this and are a regular I have a friend who is looking for her long lost brother, Juan Antonio. He is originally from San Miguel de Allende and has a brother living there. Juan Antonio is in construction and has a daughter name Ana Karen. Any information provided would be greatly appreciated in helping unite a sister and brother. Thanks! read more

If you like a whole fish and tasty then go this place. The people work there are very nice. Its not a high end restaurant. But, the food taste better then a high end mexican restaurant. This place is worth to try. This is real food. Very reasonable price. We went to the West Street one and didn't like it as much as this one. read more

The pupusas are good didn't care for the cóctel de camarón but the customer service is the worst.

Raw oysege weren't cold. But they were big in size. I'm sure they weren't fresh. The crab cakes were delicious however. The lemonade was very fresh as well read more

Super good food !! Ugh love it . But the place does need to be upgraded n updated , other then that dont change the food.

Best seafood restaurant by my area (downtown/west San Antonio) David is an awesome server treats us amazingly! We go about once or twice a month but avoid weekends due to the fact that it gets so busy. Wednesdays they are closed. Stuffed crab and the soups are delish! Definitely recommend read more

I gave this place 4 stars, but only because this was my first time eating here. Right off the bat I was impressed with their service. The waitress was very polite and was hustling, which is nice to see vs. other places that like to drag their feet. The place was very clean and while it is a seafood restaurant, it did not have that fishy smell (fresh seafood should not smell fishy...a paradox i know). I ordered the Filete Veracruzeno with their rice and...WOW!!! It tasted so good, fresh, and the best part...it has 3 filets. I had to try one of their papusas and I'm so glad that I did...it was amazing...and so was the coleslaw that came with it...it was awesome...i could have a plate of that by itself. Their sweet plantains...I thought perhaps Jesus had made it because it was simply...Heaven. It comes with a side of refried beans and Crema Salvadorena and it is to die for...heck...it is to KILL for. We had a lot of food and the best part...it was so inexpensive...but it tasted high dollar. I highly recommend this place and I'm pretty sure I'm going to update my post to 5 stars when I try other food items. read more
