I have owned rats off and on since I was 5 (currently 49). I went to Zoo Creatures yesterday to get a new trio of boys. The young man in the store who helped me was VERY knowledgeable. I ended up picking out three wonderful boys. They were clearly well socialized and hand tamed. All three boys are very sweet - Ive had them less than 24 hrs and they are already coming to my family and I willingly, snuggling with us, and taking food from our hands. They are a little sneezy, but anyone who knows rats knows that respiratory issues are common - nothing a little doxy can't solve! Love them so much already! read more

Used to enjoy going to Zoo Cteature. Always something to see! I have purchased many different items , including live fish there. Lately I don't enjoy. Store always looks run down, aquariums are dirty and poor selection of fish. Mainly, the employees except for one polite boy, are dang rude and lacking manners. When I went here to get two hairless rats as pets, a man that was 6'0 ft + tall proceeded to be extremely aggressive to me (keep in mind i'm a 21 yo woman) and then continued with the aggression while screaming at other employees and me. I had to contact police and he stormed out and took off. The manager was beyond confused and barely cared that this whole event occurred. Been going here since I was a kid and it's always been a bit dirty but last time I went in there I was appalled. Tanks are too small for the bigger animals. I saw two dead axolotl's... Which isn't surprising because there is nothing for them to hide in in the tank and no plants whatsoever I told someone that there were dead axolotls in the tank and they did nothing about it and I saw a dead fish... Never done the tour, so reviewing the store and my experience buying a scorpion. The place is just plain rad. Tons of fish, amphibians etc. But what I'm really into are scorpions, tarantulas, etc. This places selection is excellent (especially compared to a big box pet store). The woman who ended up selling me my juvenile Emperor scorpion was very nice and helpful. I also saw someone come in with some sort of lizard they couldn't take care of. Went on the tour. It was great. The guide was extremely knowledgeable. He was great even though my kid was being a sh*thead. I got all kinds of great info. Saw all kinds of great reptiles. Even get to handle some. Some if the biggest snakes ive ever seen. Ive seen other reviews on here bashing the cleanliness and smell, but for the space they have and the amount of animals, they do a great job at keeping up with the housekeeping. If the smell of animals bother you, stay out of pet stores. Oh, if you go on the tour and you're wearing a sweatshirt or sweater, you're going to have a bad time. It's 85°F in there. read more

I love this place with a passion. It's such a fun place I can hardly keep myself from coming back! I buy all my aquarium plants here because they are so unique and never have pest snails! They have the sweetest most friendly birds and the coolest reptiles and arachnids. Only thing that perplexed me was once I started buying their banana plants on a regular basis for $2.99, now they're suddenly $4.99. The last one I got was teeny tiny and they still charged me $4.99. I asked the cashier if that was correct and she said oh yeah they raised the price but didn't offer an explanation as to why. I'm assuming it's because the demand went up. Kinda bummed cuz I feel like I'm the reason the demand for banana plants is up right now, lol. Still love you guys very much, just you wouldn't raise prices on frequent customers. This place is usually my favorite place to go until now. I purchased a pet rat about a year ago and he came down with a respiratory infection and passed away. I've owned rats before this so obviously I was confused and saddened, and also frustrated that after 500$ to a vet he passed. A few months ago my dad got me a new rat since I loving having them as pets, and he also passed away from the infection. Both rats were purchased from Zoo Creatures. I went in for a visit of the animals with a friend and another woman was there by the rat cages. We talked and she had also purchased a rat here and claimed that she said something and the people didn't care. A sick rat was with all the others right in front of me as she said this. Is saddens me to see such a personal animal be doomed to die, do not buy their rats till they claim responsibility and do something. read more

I frequent the store for supplies and feeders. Also I have purchased my current snake (Ball Python) and pet rats (for my kids) there in the past. The staff is great, always willing to answer any questions and help with any situation no matter how trivial. Kevin runs a tight ship ( My neighbor was an employee of his before he moved away) and stays on top of everything there. I have never had anything go wrong or happen to any of my animals that (in hind-sight) didn't have to do with my own husbandry. And in those cases the staff assisted and we corrected everything. Because they are set back off rt 125, I have no idea if they exist still, but they carry a lot of exotic pets that people in trailers shouldn't have, but they do. This first time I went to Zoo Creatures, I was looking to purchase a Ball Python. I had previously purchased two from my local Petco, but both had mites, refused to eat and died within a few weeks... So, I did some research and found New England Reptile Distributors (NERD), which breeds, sells, and shows captive-bred reptiles, particularly Ball Pythons. Almost all of the snakes available at Zoo Creatures come from NERD, which operates in the building adjacent to Zoo Creatures. I called Zoo Creatures a few days in advance and the guy I talked to was very kind and even offered to give me a tour of the breeding facilites in NERD if I had time. Anyway, when we got there, the reptile department had dozens of baby Ball Pythons available. The staff who worked the department was very patient and very knowledgable, and let me see each and every baby Ball Python (~25 snakes) before I made my final choice. All of the snakes were in clean environments and looked healthy. The staff also gave me three frozen/thawed feeder mice (which they also breed) for free, along with some great advice. This is far from the over-stocked, too-small cages seen at Petco, and the staff here are just wonderful! I still have my Ball Python today and am so glad I made the right decision to go with Zoo Creatures. I go to Zoo Creatures every summer as a side trip from Hampton Beach. Since my first trip I've checked out the other departments: The small animal and bird sections were both clean and the animals looked healthy. Most cages weren't overstocked like they are at Petco, and one can easily ask the staff for more information. I believe the rabbits shoud've been in large hutches rather than small cages, but that's just me. They have a nice selection of fish and aquaria on display. The reptile section has several species for sale including pythons, boas, chameleons, geckos, lizards, turtles, arachnids, and scorpions. They also have several color morphs available. Their tortoises live in large outdoor enclosures. Lots of good products available. Orijen, California Natural, Innova and Sojos were just a few of the available brands of premium, all-natural dog and cat food. They even carry raw meat products for those of us who feed the prey model or B.A.R.F. diets. They also carry food & supplies for ferrets, degus, Egyptian Spiny Mice, chinchillas, sugar gliders, and hedgehogs, among other small animals. One thing that comes as a red flag to me was the small glass pen of puppies and kittens they had for sale. Most of them looked healthy and happy, but I did notice one of them had diarrhea and another was rather listless, which is a serious red flag. Some of the pups may well come from local breeders, but *reputable* breeders do not make deals with pet stores, ever. Thus, I would recommend against purchasing a puppy or kitten from Zoo Creatures - or ANY pet store for that matter. Overall Zoo Creatures is a great pet store with a wide selection of animals and a friendly and knowledgable staff. As per usual, do some research before buying a new pet and don't be afraid to ask the staff questions, it's their job to help you out! read more

While my 12 year old daughter and I were crossing the parking lot, attempting to enter the store, the owner accelerated his white ram van toward my daughter and I. Ultimately driving his van between the two of us while yelling profanities out the window. I asked the young lady in the store if the van exiting belonged to the business, she informed me it did and identified the driver as the owner. if i could give zero stars i would .... and i am a long time customer. my boyfriend and i had gotten a leopard tortoise in august. when going to meet the ones they had the women "selling" (they make commission by the way) it to us suggested a 20 gallon tank.... for a growing tortoise. obviously this is well less than what we had for him, we aren't first time reptile owners. everything was fine with him, he was eating, soaking, everything a little tortoise should do until he completely changed and passed away this morning. We did sign the waiver because we have gotten turtles from the aquarium side, which is clearly taken care of more than the reptile room, so we thought nothing of it. there is no possible way for a perfectly healthy animal to die within a day from being normal. i suspect an ongoing respiratory infection of some kind from being with over 10 tortoises in a small enclosure from when we got him. after reading other reviews from people that have also lost a pet, the owner has no sympathy whatsoever saying "if we made an exemption for you, we'd have to make an exception for everyone. what's the use of having any guidelines at all" when referring to someone who had just lost a pet, and was looking for some kind of compensation. it's not about the money. it's about losing something you love. clearly something the owner does not care about. if you took care of your animals in the store this wouldn't be an ongoing problem. this store is an absolute money grab and they could care less about their animals and their customers. i am angry and upset that they could so willingly care less about grieving a lost family member. i will no longer be doing business here. please take your business somewhere else and find a reputable breeder. read more

This is my go-to pet store! Every other weekend I go there for my bearded dragon. It's not too expensive (a few items are cheaper elsewhere, but in general, the items are a better deal), and the variety they have is incredible! I've started my own Dubai Roach colony, get Tomato Hornworms, heating supplies, terrarium decor... I can't say much for other animals, but if you have a reptile, Zoo Creatures is THE place to go! The staff is pretty great too, they're knowledgeable and helpful. They also seem to like their jobs, which is pretty nice! Only slight complaint: Their boxed live crickets seem to have a way of dying a week or two after buying them. It's not husbandry since I know other people with similar issues as far as the crickets go. Not a big deal -- those are the only thing that I've ever had problems with. read more

I find some things are overpriced, but you can't beat the quality and selection, not only in supplies but in animals. We've taken the tour multiple times and I highly recommend taking it. It's extremely informative; you see many different types of reptiles. Make sure you call ahead though, I've noticed they're getting extremely busy for the tours. I know this place has gotten a lot of bad reviews in the past, but they've improved ten-fold over the last few years. I've never had a problem with either animals or supplies (we've bought 2 snakes, 2 mice, and adopted 2 cats). This is definitely one of my top go-to shops for reptile supplies! read more

Zoo Creatures begs the question: How many animals can be fit in a small building? This strongly indicates that the well being of the animals takes a back seat to greed. Especially the bird room: wall to wall birds stacked four small, dirty cages high with only a weak fan vent for the claustrophobic heat. It was nice that they had taken in an African Grey who lost his home, until you realize they're still trying to make $2500 off of him. Many birds have been there for six months, yet there are fledglings in the incubators. All staffed by teenagers. I have been coming to zoo creatures every couple months just to appreciate the reptiles that they have there. They have a great selection of reptile housing equipment and have a vast variety of snake morphs. The other day when I went to zoo creatures I was doing my usual look at all the different reptiles and looked into a Tokay Gecko cage and saw something very disturbing that I still keep picturing in my head ever since. I own a couple of crested geckos so to see a type of gecko the way I saw it the other day was highly upsetting. There was a dead tokay gecko in a cage with multiple other tokays and was being crawled all over on by a bunch of crickets that are too big for those geckos in general. There were also fruit flies crawling on his pale and sunken eyes. I was completely disturbed by this scene and was actually really shocked that the care takers in the store hadn't noticed that there was a dead gecko right in view when looking in the cage (can't be missed). The gecko was so hard and dry looking that it appeared to have been there for more than just a couple hours. My intention is not to have people hate this store or never go there, I just wanted to grow attention towards the fact that there was a dead gecko right in front of the cage that was obviously overlooked by the people who care for the geckos. I understand that animals can die of unknown illnesses or injuries and that it wasn't particularly something that the carers did, but the gecko should've been noticed and removed from the cage. read more

Unbelievably HUGE selection of reptiles and reptile supplies. I mean HUGE !!! But I had to leave the store after a very short period of time. The smell is enough to make you nauseous as it did me. The place is an absolute pig hole, all the cages and terrarium's are filthy and the animals all seemed poorly cared for at best. The staff was super friendly and I'm sure they mean well but I'm sorry, the place should not be so disgustingly filthy. If you need supplies for basically any type of pet you will certainly find what you need here and very reasonable priced too. I intended on buying a Crested Gecko while I was there as that's why I went to them but.....I just couldn't. I truly was afraid to being one home and expose it to my other Geckos and make my colony of them sick. It's that dirty there. Went in because I had never been before, Ultimately we went in looking to see if they had any hedgehogs in stock. Unfortunately, they did not. We walked around and the store itself is very crowded however organized in sections. They had a very large selection of reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids as well as birds, saltwater and freshwater fish and small animals. As we walked around we came to the small animal corner, they had 3 full cages of guinea pigs, 6 full cages of rabbits and cages with ferrets, chinchillas. They had a hairless hamster and a hairless guinea pig that I was interested in, We were able to have one of the staff members take him out, he was very adorable and we were going to take him home until we noticed that it looked like he had something wrong with his left eye, possibly conjunctivitis? They had a cage with five 6 week old baby bunnies, they were too cute to resist, so we asked to know the gender of the fluffiest one. The staff member helping us could not even tell me, and since I have a bunny at home and one that had passed I knew how to tell, so I had her hold the bun and I look to see what it was. I had to tell her it was male. I then asked to see another bunny and find out its gender and I had to tell her it was female. They were being sold at 6 weeks old for $79.99. I know a lot about rabbits and I also know that even if they are weaned at 6 weeks old they should be with mom until at least 8 weeks. Don't get me wrong these little buns were the cutest but I feel that the staff could have been a little more knowledgeable about the bunnies they were selling. When we picked out what baby we wanted the staff member that was helping us said she was going to go find a box, she came back with a box that looked as if it was originally for supplies. She loaded our little guy into a box with wood shavings, mind you, wood shavings of any kind are not good for bunnies of any age. she then came back and said that the bunny was up front waiting for us. I then asked what they were feeding the babies there and she proceeded to tell us that the adult rabbits and the babies all eat the same thing. Once again mind you, baby bunnies should be eating unlimited young rabbit diets and soft hay such as orchard grass. They were feeding them timothy hay and adult pellets. I can say, though, that the rabbit igloos they had were very decently priced, at PetSmart and Petco the large igloos are at least $20 but here it was $12.99. They also didn't have any toys for bunnies, so we grabbed the young rabbit pellets and went to pay we got up to the counter and out little guys box was packing taped shut with only two holes on the side of the box. We got in the car and opened it up and went to the Petco nearby to grab toys and see if they had any baby bunny-specific items, which they didn't but we still found toys and we grabbed him some orchard grass. It's safe to say zoo creatures was a cool place to visit and ultimately it seems like they care more about their extensive selection of reptiles and such than they do small animals. We are taking the baby bunny to the vet within the next few days to make sure we were sold a healthy baby. read more
