I went in today after the store was recommended. I had not been before because I was not aware of Jay's Aquatics. While the staff member did assist me, my questions weren't answered clearly and I felt a bit rushed during the interaction. The store itself seemed a little cluttered. I wasn't able to get a clear answer on the filter's media size so I decided not to purchase it. I needed several things but left. read more

I'm disappointed. We don't have a fancy aquarium, just a 35 gallon freshwater tank that we take good care of. We hadn't bought any fish in a while because ours had been thriving but over time we were down a few so I bought 4 neons (very expensive in my opinion) and 2 pairs of tetras. A few days later our 4 year old bala shark contracts an obvious case of ick and we lost all the neons, 2 tetras and the shark in 4 days. The others 5 fish in our tank may survive post treatment but not happy at all that it appears the ick appears in our tank right after our purchase. With nothing new except the fish we purchased being introduced to our tank in over a year it only leads to 1 conclusion. read more

My daughter and I drove up to Jay's Aquatics from Avon, MA.... An hour and seven minutes. My daughter had her Cheez-It Crackers, Apple Juice Box and headphones to watch Frozen 2 in my headrest TV's... Lol. The owners were nice, pleasant and friendly... Don't buy a fish tank from these guys. You cant return it, they don't take them back, and when you call the owner to discuss, he doesn't call back. My wife bought me a 42 Bowfront from them, I wanted a 64 Gallon so I went back to exchange and buy the more expensive bigger one. They wouldn't take back the 42 Bowfront. The tanks the cheapest part of the Salt water tank expense. If they treated us better they may have gotten a customer that would spend a couple thousand with them. Bad business decision. Liveaquaria just got my business and I spent $3600 with them. read more

I recently received the Biocube 32 as a birthday gift. I visited several area pet / fish shops seeking advice and tips. Needless to say i was less than impressed and more confused. Feeling a bit discouraged i reached out to Jay who was confident he could get me up and running. I stopped into the shop today a was greeted immediately by one of his staff. I explained that i was a complete beginner to this hobby. The store was very busy however this staff member took the time i needed to get everything i needed to get my tank up and running. He offered suggestions on everything from rock to heaters etc. i left feeling completely confident that i will be successful. The tank is up and running tonight ( still s bit cloudy but that's to be expected on day 1) and can't wait for it to cycle so i can add some fish. Just went up to jay's aquatics in Salem NH, I went up there specifically to get a lighting ballast that I already owned but fried by pouring water on it. The thing about aquarium supply places is that they are few and far between and as fish tank hobbiest it sucks to drive an hour to get there. On top of that they are always super expensive in comparison to online options. Just my ballast was about 50 dollars more then marine depot (.com). With that said, I get it that they have alot of overhead and expenses and the fact of the matter is in a market where I have options, I would much rather support my local vendors (I use the term local in this case very loosely for the hour drive involved). I like keeping money in the community but when I shop here I want a human interaction and at jays everyone was working pretty hard and they were just kind of...... busy. No one asked if I wanted help but then again I didn't ask for help or really show that I needed/ wanted anything, I Just kind of looked around and tried to take it all in. They have an awesome selection of everything and their prices for live stock are on the money which usually in the area are wayyy over priced. I'm really happy with this place all and all, but could have used a little more customer interaction which seemed lacking just cuase of how busy they were. So safe to say I'm A fan and i'll def be coming back here but theres a little room for improvement. I guess I want to feel like a valued customer, and that was the only thing lacking from this experience, maybe I just need to build up some re-pour! read more

A great place to visit with amazing variety of saltwater and freshwater creatures. If you stop by to pick up a lamp you will end up looking at the tanks for hours. You can skip your trip to the New England Aquarium and wander the halls of this shop instead. Fantastic corals, lots of saltwater/marine creatures from lobsters, shrimp, sea slugs, tangs, clownfish, eels, so many fish big and small. They post livestock on their site but it is well with the trip if you want to look around. Zero high pressure sales which seems to make some people think that they don't want to help but it is the opposite. They are happy to let you wander around but if you ask a question you will get an educated answer and immediate help if you are ready for it. The floor is concrete but you wouldn't want it any other way. It would be scary to have the weight of thousands of gallons of water anywhere else but the ground floor. Check it out if you are in the area, it is worth driving an hour in my opinion. read more

I have been to a lot of salt water supply stores and this is the best one in NH by far. I have built a reef tank with their stock and have had very few problems, mostly caused by my inexperience. I would recommend before you make the investment to build a tank to consider how long you'll be at the current residence and if you are the type of person who can commit an hour every other week to your tank. I Eventually figured out that it is easier to have someone clear the tank once a month for about $100 once I lost my initial interest in this hobby. i still love my tank but make sure you have the right cash for this hobby before you buy! Jay and company are excellent. Excellent selection, good prices, and always helpful staff. I've happily spent thousands of dollars there. Why the lower rating? I travelled 1.5 hours to the story today (which tells you how much I value the business) and found the entire staff and all the customers without masks (just 2 days after the president came down with COVID). I walked in and walked out and then took my business to store further south where masks are required. I'll gladly come back when masks are required or once I'm vaccinated. read more

If you are interested in starting an aquarium (fresh, brackish or saltwater), I highly recommend Jay's Aquatics. I bought an entire saltwater setup but was concerned about how to manage it. Jay and his staff are always extremely helpful. They helped me get things started and simplified instructions maintain the tank on my own. It has been very easy to maintain and the fish have thrived. Jay is very knowledgeable all-around and his prices are fair. They have recently upgraded the store set-up. If I could give zero stars on customer service I would. Being almost the only customers in there we were not greeted or asked if we needed any help when we walked in and made our way around the store. Employee was not helping another customer, just chatting up a co-worker. My daughter finally asked the employee if they had beta fish, in return, the employee just showed her the tank they were in and walked away. I asked the same employee about bowls/tanks to purchase but he said they didn't have any (although I called right before we went to ask if they had beta fish and bowls and they said they did). The employee acted as if we were bothering him so we left and went to PETCO and got everything we needed. When your 10-year-old complains about the customer service you know there is a problem. read more

Great little hole in the wall kinda of place. A lot of variety of fresh water and, salt water. They even had a little neon blue crawfish (which I purchased). We were just starting out so we purchase about 7 fish from then with my mini lobster. We asked the guy that was there which turned out to be the owner Jay, if our cichilds would all mix well and won't eat each other. He said " yes that their fine and, we won't have any problems ". Turns out that wasn't true our electric blue and our electric yellow with a line on its fin, ended up bring they don't mix well with our oscar cichilds and the blue one ended up killing 2 of our fish, one being a oscar. So now we had to buy a whole new tank for those 2. Now our other fish are finally happy. Would have been nice if the owner was a little more knowledgeable. read more

Jays has recently updated the place and it looks really good and the staff is really helpful. I like the freshwater section they added. They have a pretty good selection of fresh and salt. I would definitely recommend checking this place out now with all the positive changes. read more

Jay's is a great fish shop, and always has a big selection. Never had problems with the livestock I've bought there. Friendly folks, but will give you the space to look a lot before you start picking things to buy. Works with on pricing and sometimes will give you a deal on loose corals, etc. coming here is a "treat", and for the kids, it's like going to an aquarium! read more

I did business with Jay for years. I had a problem with a big money item and Jay did nothing except lie. I guess he just wants the money and that is it. I had to go thru the vendor and another pet shop to fix the problem. Plus the item was delivered free where i had to pay to have it delivered from jays. There was better customer service from a store that was just fixing jays blunder. I guess his priorities need work. I talked to other people in the club and I learned I was just another statistic to Jays Aquatic........... Shop at your own risk!!! read more

The people at Jays are always very helpful. They take the time to educate the novice in any question they may have. There are no pushy salesmen here. They let you wander and look and the moment you ask for help they are there to answer any question you may have or get you what you need. So if you like a relax atmosphere to shop and window watch. I say see Jays Aquatics. They help me through the start of of my first saltwater tank and even with the second tank. Any question I have had they have been more than helpful and make recommendations as to what to do to fix it even if it does not involve a sale. This guys love fish and their job. i also wanted to add that every saltater fish i buy from jays dies!!! my water is perfect & when i say perfect i'm saying 1.025 salinity 0 nitrates 0 nitrites ph is 8.2 ammonia is 0 as well!!! tank has been up & running for 4 years!! i've bought fish from petco over 2 years ago & their doing very well!!! again i say jay is all about the money & not the well being if his fish!!! his help sucks they dont care about you even if you've been standing there for over 39 minutes so he can take his basement dump store & stuff it!!!! read more

Not too impressed. While Jay's Aquatics has a nice selection of freshwater and saltwater fish, the place is dirty. It feels like a basement fish project, not a store. The filtration system is not hidden at all and all the overflow water is rushing into a large container..I think that should be hidden, and there are electrical wire hanging all over the place, over water. There were puddles of nasty water on the floor and most of the tanks were dirty. The worst part of my visit (November 2013) was the customer service, or the lack of it. I walked around the store for 40 minutes and not one of the 3 employees who were there asked me if I needed help with anything. They seemed generally unfriendly. Advice - clean your store and enroll in a basic customer service course - have your employees where similar shirts with the store logo on it or something. I gave 2 stars instead of only 1 becaus the store did have a nice selection of fish and supplies. I would love to go back to see the fish or even buy some fish and equipment..but will not be going back any time soon because of bad customer service and store conditions. read more
