YAY for another pet supply store in the area! Every since Sea World Pet Center closed, it's been more difficult to find food my Jack at later hours. This place is opened Mon-Sat 9am-9pm; Sun 10am-6pm. Puuuuurrrrrfect! So I just got some food for Jack today at 8P since my usual place I go to closes at 6P. They have a great selection of quality dog food (Timber Wolf, Wellness, Canidae, etc) ... looks like it has a good selection for cats, but I don't know much about cats. It's cute, a few cats hang out freely throughout the store on food bags etc. When I went in today, there were 3 puppies greeting (sort of ... they were half awake) ... a nice bull mastiff, a nice boxer, and a rare weimener! They have a puppy section in the back, and I wanted to take them all home with me! I am sure to come back! Prices were reasonable ... got Jack's Taste of the Wild! :) yum yum! read more

Went into Discount Pet Supply recently to check out the store. Upon entering all I could smell was pet feces. I took a quick look around because quite frankly, I couldn't stand the smell.There was a small corralled area where they keep their pets. I did see some poop's on the vinyl tile floor which explains where the smell was coming from. There's plenty of places to buy dog food from Dodge Grain (where I buy), Petsmart & Petco. All of which don't smell. This place reminds me of the closed down Sea World..... One word, Yuk!!! read more

I used to be a customer here, but the bad vibes and sketchy conditions made me head for the high hills. Having a constant supply of puppies available for adoption doesn't sit right with me. I've asked multiple times where they get their dogs from and all they've ever responded is "rescue". No organizations, no names, no details. That cat who lives in the store and uses it as a bathroom (yeah, gross) is always more battered/emaciated looking each time I stop by. The owners said she keeps getting mauled by another cat of theirs at night so she had no choice but to keep her out here in the store. She implied the cats were hers and she said all this while pointing to the employee door. So I'm guessing they just have random cats here that they don't look after or interact with. The cat is bumpy from head to toe ad covered in scars. So friendly though, I wish I could save it from that dump. The last straw for me came when the owners brought in their German Shepherd and let it hang out in the middle of the entrance way. That's fine, I don't mind stepping over a dog. But this dog had an open wound on it's body. I asked about her health and the answer I got was defensive and rude. They said she was a highly regarded breeding dog and a pure bred herself and expertly trained from a long line of police dogs or something blah blah blah. Like who am I to question the care of this prize winning creature? So, I'm supposed to ignore the bleeding dog that's too weak to lift her own head off the ground? Yeah right. Also, there's nothing discount about this place. You'll find the same food for a better price at the Petsmart up the street. read more

So the two only real real pluses to this establishment is that A. The owner is very friendly and personable. B. They some very high quality dog food offerings, but a little skimp on the cat section. Now for the negative. I have been here on a few occasions now, and every time you walk in there are either randoms dog(s) roaming around, or a cat (used to be there). Ummmm hello potential lawsuit?! I had my puppy in there today and we were down one of the aisles, all of a sudden a big German Shepherd puppy wandered over to us warily. The dog came over and they were nose to nose, the dog then growled at mine and I tried to get my dog away safely and the shepherd tried to get to him. Thank goodness the owner called the dog over and he left. She then thought it would be a great idea to see if they could get reintroduced. Um yeah, the dog growled and opened his mouth to bare his teeth aggressively. Now, I am not trying to say that the shepherd would have actually injured my dog, but he wasn't exactly given the chance either. What if a customer came in with a large dog that wasn't particularly friendly towards other dogs/animals.....that could turn ugly. I mean seriously, even someone coming into the store without a pet might be intimidated but a large dog like that. So.... incident averted, but you're fair warned. Another thing, when you hear the word discount, one assumes that you'll actually be saving money. Nothing in this place is at a discount, if anything the prices are the same or hiked up compared to other pet stores. There is a Petsmart right down the road and Dodge's agway a bit further than that. Is it going to be a Sea World situation all over again, I wonder how long this place will last. I feel bad writing a negative review since the owner/staff does seem genuinely nice, but something like that just cannot be overlooked. read more

I went into this store the other day. They had a small female border collie. She obviously had kennel cough, she was coughing the entire time. Her fur was rough and not soft and fluffy like a puppy should be, she was lethargic and her toungue was hanging out of her mouth. The owner told me that border collies are great dogs for beginners. Border collies are the WORST dogs for beginners, they need a lot of mental and physical excerize, more than most people can give, and get destructive otherwise. They were selling the pup for $999 for a sick dog. Unbelievable. I don't recommend buying a pup here. read more

Two months ago I went into this store and was told the dog food (Taste of the Wild) that I was looking for was recalled because it was causing dogs to have bloody stools and making them extremely ill. I was shocked and upset since I'd been feeding my dogs this food for quite a while. They convinced me to switch to another, more expensive brand. I went to a new local pet store today and told them that I couldn't buy Taste of the Wild because of the recent recall, the manager of that store told me there hadn't been a recall! He also said that several other people had come into his store telling him about the recall that the woman at Discount Pet Supplies told them about. I called Taste of the Wild to confirm and was informed that there had never been a recall! I will never shop at this store again. read more

This pet store is got to be the most horrible smelling pet store I have ever gone to. Like another poster said, the place really smells horrible. I guess if you can stand the smell of dog poo when your shopping around the store, this would be another place to shop. Also went to Dodge Grain which I did not know about until most recently, which is further up Rt 28 and wow, what a difference in the knowledgeable sales people, and very large display of quality products. The prices did seemed slightly higher than Discount Pet Supply, although they most definitely carry the much higher lines of cat and dog food. Like everything the bottom line is, you get what you pay for. read more

****EDITED 4/12/12 to add:*** I guess store owners don't like it when you give them a negative review, and that's why I've gotten several nasty, nasty messages from the folks that work there. My question to the store owner: Where did your puppies come from BEFORE you started taking in puppies from a rescue group? "USDA breeders", yeah? "USDA breeders" are commercial breeders - people who breed a LARGE number of animals specifically for wholesale to pet stores, brokers, and research facilities. AKA...mills. Secondly, I will question what type of rescue would supply puppies to a pet store. Does anyone (either you or the rescue these pups come from) do background/vet references and home checks before the pup is ever allowed to leave the store? What's your criteria for allowing Joe Shmoe off the street to "adopt" one of these puppies? Are the puppies spayed or neutered before they ever leave the store? Those are two of the major things that separate "sellers" from "rescuers." Additionally, in the Eagle Tribune article, you state "We get just the puppies here, the adult dogs get fostered out to a home," Blackington said. "From 2 months old up to 7 months old, they're babies and haven't even had a chance to live. It makes it easier to find families for them, because they've never been abused or been hurt, and they're just starting out in life." And that statement says it all. You clearly have never worked in rescue before, or are intentionally trying to mislead people into adopt a puppy vs, an adolescent/adult dog. The vast majority of dogs in shelters are there through no fault of their own, and most of them have zero behavior problems more severe than a house training problem, pulling on the leash, or jumping on people - ALL OF WHICH people will deal with when acquiring a puppy. The truth is that there is NO SURPLUS of puppies in the rescue system - puppies are EASY to adopt out! Older dogs, not so much. If you can provide TANGIBLE proof that you (or the rescue you get the pups from) require personal/veterinary references, do home checks, spay/neuter before the pup leaves your care, and mandate that the dog be returned to you in the event that the adopter can no longer care for it, I will HAPPILY alter my original review in your favor. Hell, I'll even come in and BUY something. And if your staff is polite this time around, I'll even REFER people to you. But if you can't provide tangible proof, my original review will remain, along with this addition. ************************************************************************************* (Original review) This place seems to have cleaned up a bit in the last few months but, unfortunately, it's still foul. This place sells all sorts of puppies, and unless you've been living under a rock for the last decade, you know that puppies in pet stores come from mills and that mills are horrible, disgusting places. To make matters worse, the puppies are crated or penned for the majority of the time, and get little contact with humans save for when their area is cleaned by the older woman who handles them roughly. When they're not crated, they are left unattended in a large open space, to play without supervision (and without toys.) Customer service here is horrible. The older woman is rude, rude, rude. She asked if I needed any help; I told her that I was just looking, to which she replied "well why don't you BUY something?" Then she tried to sell me some over-priced (albeit high-end) dog food, and snapped at me when I told her that my dogs eat home-prepared meals. On my way out, she asked me what kind of dog I had. When I told her that I have three dogs, she tried to sell me a puppy...by shoving it into my arms and saying "You need one more. Only $695!" Seriously? I have been here several times and the staff and owners were very knowlegable and store is always clean . The person that complained about animals wandering around in store .. they are very friendly and the owner would not have vicious animals loose in store, my dogs have met up with their loose German Sheperd many times and he is a very friendly dog.. If you are afraid of animals maybe you should not go to a pet store. Also this woman should be commended for her compassion for helping rescue pets in her store. I thank they are doing a great job and will go there for all my pet needs. read more

To anyone that thinks petco and petsmart does not smell, has a nose problem; just saying... Anyways got the oppurtunity to visit this store for the first time and I was very impressed, store was clean, staff is friendly and helpful, and the ability to adopt a puppy and save it from a kill-shelter is a definate plus. Anyone that takes the time to save an animal from being killed has my vote. The owner of this establishment is doing an amazing job by saving animals that other people would have killed. @Mathew A, to answer your question...a lot of people adopt puppies from pet stores! Hello, where have you been hiding??? lol Any pet store that allows folks to bring in their dogs is going to have some type of accident on the floor from time to time. Dogs, unlike people cannot hold it until they go outside, c'mon people use a bit of common sense. For the most part the store is very clean and when an animal does have an accident, the employess clean it up immediately, I know because I was in that store for 2 hours (playing with the pups). I would reccommend this store to anyone looking for a puppy and all of it's supplies any day of the week. read more

05/07/2011 I have very mixed emotions about this place right now. I feel that they are unethical at the moment. The next day or two will tell if they abide by NH law on returning a sick puppy. I do agree unfortunately with the rudeness that has been encountered. Fingers crossed they will do the right thing...which would make me go back in the future. Hopefully if they do the right thing.. And this will detract from all the naysayers here or add me to that list which believe me is something they do not want! I said I was hesitant about keeping the pup and you said I had to. I stated back your paper and it said. I agreed I would use the medicine given to me by my vet for KENNEL COUGH which you had 4 others pups there QUARENTINED with...one of which was kenneled with my pup and I can confirm that as my daughter sent me a picture of the two of them IN THE KENNEL TOGETHER as she wanted him...so please don't lie to me again that they were not together. You also lied about having his lungs x-rayed. YOUR vet which I brought the pup to TWO times told me that was not true... And gave me medication as well as what my vet gave me... So three vet visits in under 10 days. Yep... Not a sick dog! You should be ashamed of yourself. I even said I would agree to not even a full refund. You must be very concerned about your bad reputation to keep logging in here to see who posts negative information about your shop. Again I would love to know who you "claimed" you spoke with today at the state level that was working today! Again another lie as when I asked you who for name and number you told me it was none of my business. You know why you wouldn't tell me? ANOTHER LIE! I do hope that people find their way to this site to read of the abundance of negative vs positive feedback which you clearly are the posters to move along. i came in here after getting a new puppy. the woman took the time to pick out a treat for her as well as give me FREE samples of different pet food. How awesome, we get to try 3 different foods to see what she likes best. i liked there selection of dog food. i gave it 4 stars as i do think they are great i just do not support puppy sales in a retail manner. read more

My family and I visited Discount Pet Supply over a span of 2 months and not once did it smell bad but if it did I would expect it as there are animals in there! You people sound like snots that go to the Deerfield fair and complain when you are walking by the barn that holds the pigs! EW it smells! Grow up! All the animals have a clean and safe environment with loving workers who care for them. I am not a relative or a friend but a very happy customer who got a dog there just last week after many visits. With all the paperwork I received I know they are legitimately rescueing dogs. Was not impressed! Fowl smell when you walk through the door. When I asked about getting my dog food she said she didn't carry it anymore because it was making dogs sick and should be recalled. She wanted me to buy another food she carried. I left without any food in hand and being concerned about what I was feeding! I did some checking and there has been no reports of sick dogs and there is no recall! I will continue to buy my favorite dog food down the road at Dodge Grain or Pet Life! Her lose! I don't only want to buy from a clean store but from one that will be honest and accurate with the information she gives out!!! I have better things to do than to waste my time looking up bogus information. I need to trust the store I shop at! read more
