So I will prefaced that I came here in St. Patrick's Day; whilst Gonzaga University were playing for March Madness. We were told to seat ourselves which we did, and then NO ONE CAME. Granted we only wanted drinks so we moseyed over to the bar and got them ourselves, but we were there for 45 minutes without a waitress even looking our way. I would have been a lot more ornery if I actually wanted something to eat. I will admit my drink was strong and well made, and the bartender was really nice. It looks like a traveling carnival threw up and thus, Zola was born. Zola's Happy Hour is where it's at, all appetizers are $5 from 4pm-6pm and they are delicious. We had the: Kobe Burgers (non-HH $10): three burgers grilled and baked with cheddar, bacon, smoked gouda and served on slider buns w/lettuce and pesto aioli. This was the group favorite, flavors were amazing, cooked perfectly, if you get one item, this is it! Tuna Satays (non-HH $12): wild yellow fin tuna skewers covered in sesame seeds, seared, served in ginger and siracha sauce. It was drowning is sauce, but otherwise, tasty. Steak Bruschetta (non-HH $10): grilled top sirloin, smoked gouda, carmelized onion, sundried tomato and artichoke all atop french bread. The meat was cooked to perfection, but there was too much conflicting flavor on this puppy, nix the artichoke or sundried tomato and it's golden. Zola Mac (non-HH $6): penne pasta tossed in smoked gouda and cheddar cheese sauce and bacon, pretty tasty, it was super creamy. Baked Brie (non-HH $7): sticks of brie wrapped and baked in puff pastry. You have to really love brie to be able to finish this plate, it was way too much straight brie for us. Wish there was apple or something to go along with it. Messy Sexx ($10, $8 during HH): Finlandia grapefruit vodka, Malibu Rum, Midori, cranberry juice, 7-Up, Red Bull. This cocktail was served in a mason jar and was delicious. There is a ton of seating here, and it is all surprisingly intimate, casual and cozy. Can easily accommodate large groups. We had to flag down a server after sitting there for a while, but once we ordered, our server was nice and pretty quick. Portions are pretty generous. Great place for cheap eats! read more

This place is fun if you are planning on a night out with a bunch of friends. They have live music every night (yes even on Sundays) and the happy hour is pretty great ! I recently went there with some friends from out of town and they really liked it for how unique the inside is decorated and also you can have some privacy if you are in larger groups because there are little semi private rooms both on the first and second floor. They also have outdoor seating so when the weather is nice you can sit outside in the patio area. Overall, this is a fun place to go and have food, drinks and listen to some live music on really any day of the week. read more

What a great little venue tonight. It was so great to meet Josi the new Spokane ambassador and help her celebrate her birthday. She's so very nice and I look forward to seeing her at other Yelp events. I've never been to ZOLA before but thought it was really cool. They have live music 7 days I week I was told and the band was pretty good. As the night went on it started to get more crowded and very loud. This place has a small menu of decent food and drinks and the atmosphere was mixed with young and old which was really nice. There is a small dance floor that lots of people utilized as the band played and several small areas to gather and socialize including an open balcony type room, an enclosed room over the band, several small open private rooms, a place in the back and in front of the building and a small area in the corner across from the stage. It is very hard to hear when the band is playing so be aware of that. The food that we had for the event was good. I really liked the macaroons and the bacon wrapped poppers--spicy!! I think ZOLA is overrated. I thought maybe I was being a harsh critic the first two times I visited so I went again and realized I just don't agree with the majority on this one. 1. Service/Staff: nah. I've never felt exceptionally warmed by any of the staff or servers any of the visits I've had. Its odd that not even one person has stood out to me. Which leads me to believe that ZOLA doesn't have a high standard for their staff 2. Price: nope. This place is expensive for the quality and quantity of food 3. Patio: Needs work! (I live for a good patio, so it plays a role in my reviewing process.) Great location for an awesome patio. This patio is very small. Which isn't something ZOLA can control but they can control how its set up to better utilize the space. The tables are cramped in but the chairs sit out so wide. The chairs don't fit on this small patio. Also the shrubs are so overgrown they're sitting on the patio tables. So now the patrons are jammed in the table by the oversized chairs and are sharing the space with greenery and bugs who live in that greenery. 4. Food: ick. The way the place is decorated and even how the menu is designed made me feel excited to see my dinner options. It all just seemed from blah to blech choices. I wanted to try more than one meat option on the tacos but I couldn't even order it like that. Oddly enough everything I've tried has somehow been soggy. The pita from the humus plate, the tortilla from the tacos, the bun from the sliders, the fries and even the lettuce was kinda wilty. Overall, ambiance, drinks and bartenders were on point but the wait staff and (unfortunately) the bouncer/doorman were overwhelmed. We did go on a busy night and likely them opening back up after the pandemic is probably hard to predict business. We waited outside for ~25 minutes, weirdly watching a lot of people walk out and we still weren't let in. A group of girls were permitted to cut in front of the line to get in just because, and 3 guys walked in right as we were about to.. the bouncer apologized that they were friends with the owner, nothing he could do, and we had to continue waiting until someone else left. Once we were showed in to a table, we were told a server would get our drinks but the wait staff did not get the memo, as they walked right by us many times, not making eye contact so we couldn't wave at them to ask why we weren't being served. Once we decided to order at the bar, the night turned around- super nice bartenders, very patient and took time to recommend cocktails even though they were busy. Awesome old fashioned! One of my all time favorite places for happy hour! Bloody Mary's and Moscow Mules are juuuust right! And the happy hour menu is quite generous! I also do love getting the Mac n cheese. Most places cannot do mac n cheese quite right for some reason. It's always bland or too dry, but you guys always get it right. Seems silly, but I seriously love mac n cheese. But the street tacos with chicken are my fave for happy hour! I also love how everything in the restaurant is so mis-matched that it matches. Very cool up cycling details. Lots of seating inside and outside area too!! 06/08 Been here 3 or 4 times now and when I went with some friends right when they opened on a saturday, our waitress was very rude and inattentive to us (with no other customers in the restaurant until we were getting ready to leave), and honestly pretty rude as well until it was time to pay and think about how much to tip. She honestly ruined our experience that day and I felt like I wasted $30+ on sliders with like 6 fries, and a few drinks that weren't very good. It's got like...a treehouse in it? Awesome. We went for happy hour and got an assortment of extremely delicious food. The bruschetta, chicken tacos and kobe beef sliders were amazing and actually seemed substantial for a cheap happy hour item. We both agreed that we probably should eat the sliders every day for the rest of our lives but settled for another order before we left. The service was extremely slow but it looked like they only had one girl working when they were actually fairly busy and she was trying her best. I've been to Zola a few times, each time probably the same. You don't come here for the food you come for the drinks and ambiance. My friend and I ordered chips, salsa and guac off the happy hour menu and the chips were stale, the rest was ok. I originally ordered the happy hour sliders but I was definitely still hungry so I asked for another slider and then charged for the larger plate which was fine. I'd give the sliders a 7/10. My friend ordered the chicken club wrap and she gives that a 7/10. We got Moscow Mules as that was the Wednesday special and the drinks were great. She was friendly and kind, and clearly she is a good server as indicated by the way she efficiently and effortlessly checked on us and cleared our table. I know I raved and raved about Zola in my previous review, but my most recent experience was strange. More often than not, I'm the sort of person who knows what shit usually costs. I'm good at this game; like, REALLY good. Drive down the street with me and point out a house and I can give you a damn fine estimate. So imagine my surprise when my husband and I hit up Zola on a muggy Saturday night: We went to dinner and a movie at the Magic Lantern and decided to grab a drink after. Upon finding the Blind Buck's clientele to be ... to put it politely, not quite for us, we landed at Zola. We were carded and scouted around for seats first. I stood in line at the well for a solid ten minutes while one bar tender made half a dozen drinks for a single patron, and I didn't bat an eye. The bar was crowded and I am a reasonable person with generous reserves of patience. I'm not the girl who causes a scene .. I'm not even the girl who makes snide comments about the scenario passively to the people around me. (I'm the girl who quietly waits her turn, treating servers with respect, and saying please and thank you while taking special care to make mental notes so I can outline my experience in a forthcoming yelp review...) Here's the part that gets weird ... (this section doesn't take anything away from my rating and I don't fault Zola for this detail) Mead High School was celebrating a 20th reunion party across the street earlier that evening, and quite a few folks (I assume) from that event wanted to extend the party at Zola. Understandably so! It's cute and also a bar. At the same time! I KNOW! So, as I said, I was waiting in line to order our drinks when a man stumbled between myself and the guy waiting ahead of me. There was ample space to walk behind me, as I was the last person in the line and well over 15 feet away from the stage, but I had left a fair amount of distance between myself and the man in front of me, because I am not (always) a creepy neck-breather. (sometimes I am. It just feels right. I'm only human.) Well, this line-crossing man crossed my path and let his arm run the width of my body .. the top half! Yes! Smooth, right! Just left his arm raised, and ran his hand straight across my boobs on his way back to the table to sit with his date. Dude was hammered. I have tits .. I'm going to pretend that it was unintentional. Nonetheless, awkward and uncomfortable. (Tapping into my reserves of patience by now) As a result of this, I was a little scrambled when I made it to the front of the line to order my drinks, I'll own that. However, something about the bartender's demeanor was odd. I can't really put my finger on anything that was out-and-out WRONG, but when I ordered our drinks (an Angry Orchard Cider and an orange creamsicle) the guy looked at me with disgust and made me repeat my order five (5!) more times while becoming more and more agitated as if I was wasting his time. I had already shouted my order across the bar to him so I still don't understand how I was unclear. He, then, rolls his eyes and walked away. (The aforementioned reserves of patience are accessed, yet again, at this point.) I didn't react badly or say anything that could be construed as rude, so I'm not going to claim fault for his attitude when I was just trying to order some BASIC drinks after being felt up by a stranger while I waited in the slowest line of all time. He moseys back (Seriously. Take your time! I'm here all night if need be! Do whatever you need to do. I'm here for YOU.) from the back with a fresh bottle of Pinnacle Whipped Cream Vodka and set to work on the drink. Wasn't too taxing was it? Ice, vodka, splash of orange juice? Good job! Back to the register to calculate the drinks ... Here's a bill for $17 "Do you want to leave it open or close out?" To recap: A draft of Cider An orange creamsicle cocktail Standard $5 charge for the cider. $12 for the cocktail. Twelve. Dollars. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems exorbitant. Never would I have guessed that I would be paying almost $20 for a cider and a basic, elementary cocktail at Zola. We're not talking a decent glass of wine or a craft cocktail in Portland.. We're talking about an ORANGE CREAMSICLE AT ZOLA. To be clear, I have NO problem ponying up when I see something I really want that is of good value. I will shell out $15 for a glass of wine in certain places and never bat an eye because it's what I want and I know it's going to be good. I'm not excessively frugal, but I do know the difference between cost and value. This was high cost and low value. For a local business as established and well-versed in the routine of a summer Saturday, the whole evening was a disorganized mess. I'm not the sort of person who stiffs a server on the tip either, but consider my previously-generous reserves of patience with Zola completely exhausted after my experience on Saturday night. The seating was great upstairs - the old carnival rides jut out over the main floor seemingly precariously but after a few of their delicious and strong drinks, a thrill ride was just what I needed. A 34 year old man doesn't need to take his ID out. It's not cute or flattering or necessary. No other bar in spokane carded me so I have no clue why I was carded here. Just a lesson to the bouncer: if you're a guy in your mid/late 20's and someone walks up looking older than you: leave him alone. I know, I know... your boss is cracking down on you and the city will raid the bar with guns and shit after they do some undercover stings... but get real. NO OTHER bar is doing this. And the fact is: if cops DO come in, they're not going to ask EVERY person to whip out their ID. Especially not the people who look 34! Besides, Spokane cops are too busy wrting traffic tickets. Don't harass us at the door... be extra kind to us because we (unlike the 21 year olds) have money and will probably buy better drinks and tip your friends better. After I was carded I proceeded to the ba----screeech! No bar for me. The door man just stopped me. I guess I have to pay him $5 to get to the bar. WHAT? Why? I don't hear music. I don't see people dancing. But I'm being told I have to pay the guy $5 to enjoy the luxury of sitting at the bar. There were no lines, no hot chicks dancing half naked, and no killer sounds blasting from the speakers. Just a semi-empty bar waiting for me to drink some beers. If there was a band that was going to play: put up a sign outside near the door, get people to line up in the cold streets to create a buzz, and charge everyone at once. And if there was no band: DON'T CHARGE A FUCKING COVER. I initially returned to Zola because I had good service and good beer and good conversation with the bartenders the last time I came a year ago. I won't be back the next time I visit family back in Spokane. Oh... and end of story? I told the doorman I wasn't paying. He said I had to. I told him "I just want to go to the bar and have a drink." Zola reminded me of a cruise ship lounge, I know that's strange, but that is what I thought. That is not a put-down, btw, there are some really great cruise ship lounges. But that was the atmosphere. Zola could be a great place but there were several problems that we had with our visit. #1 The men's restroom is small and impersonal, one of the worst bathrooms I have been in, and the showerhead that is used for the faucet was just silly. #2 Service was incredibly slow, we were there listening to live music and in 2 1/2 hours we were visited by the server a grand total of 2 times. I guess they don't want to sell drinks. #3 Why have a band with live music but not have food service, when we tried to order some food we were told the kitchen was closed. #4 Why list a phone number that is only a answering machine, that gives you no information (address, hours, who's performing, etc.) While we were there we saw several parties walk out due to lack of service, the people sitting next to us left because they were hungry. We too left to get a bite to eat somewhere else. So the place has potential, but it is very rough around the edges. read more
