    Needed some breakfast!
    Pam S.

Service was attentive. Granted I went in on a relatively slow day and I was on my way back to Boston I decided to find a breakfast place. I got the impression that this is a local hang-out spot as many people came in and spoke to the Servers by friendly conversations. The decaf Coffee was so good I had like 3 cups and took one to go! Trust me when I say the Irish Eggs Benedict was dayum good! Home fries were just the way I prefer them and food came up fast. If I am ever back in this neck of the woods again I will stop in for sure. Respectfully Reviewed.

When the March / April edition of Yankee Magazine updated their "top New England diners" list, AND INCLUDED ZIP'S, it was only a matter of time. I am a diner person, and go out of my way to hit a great one, and hadn't been here in over 15 years (I think it was pie, maybe carrot cake, and coffee, on the way to Providence). Today, it was the full Monty - roast turkey w potato, stuffing, choice of two vegs, dinner rolls (I passed on this) and cran sauce. Also, choice of cup of soup or salad. I opted for New England clam chowdah (excellent). Everything hit the spot....no room for pie (or carrot cake for that matter). Zip's is one of those iconic diners, in Dayville since 1954. Same family, third generation. I met Kevin, 3rd gen owner. Very personable. He mentioned Zip's uses about 4,000 eggs (not a misprint) in a typical week. Local hens are exhausted, as are the roosters. Hours curtailed a bit in past few years, mainly due to shortage of kitchen help (note that food came out quickly today). There was no shortage of waitstaff. My server, Michelle, was the definition of excellent, efficient, effective, and as bubbly as a fine bottle of champagne! Definitely worth a stop. Bring your appetite.

Came here after a long trip to Rhode Island. Heading home, we needed a quick bite so we came to this diner since it was one of the few options available that were open at this hour. The staff were, well anxious to close up and go home. The place was barren and we were the last people to come in that day. The place is a quintessential diner, tons of random foods, large cakes in the display, and non-working music players on each booth. We go through the options quickly, I opt for a monte cristo and the girlfriend goes for the pastrami with sweet potato fries. I ask for the french fries to be swapped out with mac n cheese, and they oblige. Food comes out quick, and we eat. Normally I would go over the highlights of the meal. But this food is not really memorable. it's functional, and for a diner functional is about what you expect. Since a monte cristo is a french toast sandwich, figured they would do things well. The mac n cheese is blue box, the sandwich is missing mustard or maple syrup, and the overall dish is cooked okay but nothing special. Same with the girlfriends pastrami sandwich. It was grilled heavy, leaving the meat greasy. combined with greasy sweet potato fries, wasn't very good. It wasn't a bad experience, wasn't good either. If you need something to eat, they do a decent job at getting you food. Just nothing here to write home about. Better diners are in the area, this one's mostly a pass.

    Moldy bread

Ordered meatloaf dinner. Received two overcoked slabs of mystery "meat", instant mashed potatoes, canned peas and salty gravy. I even received moldy dinner rolls! By far the worst meal I have ever received anywhere.

Not a long wait for a Saturday morning.. Staff very friendly!! Went with my "go-to" of corned beef hash and eggs with rye toast - incredibly acceptable (which is much higher praise than it sounds like) Logan had the blueberry pancakes...good flavor and "plenty of blueberries ". Coffee was good...and frequently refilled!! Will be back!!

    Menu as of 3/7/23

First time going, friendly staff. Not a long wait and pretty big menu for such a small place. That doesn't seem to slow them down even when they offer both breakfast and dinner at the same time. Good job! Will be back!!

The bench seating was very comfortable, though some of the tabletops were pretty tall and all wood, so maybe not the easiest to sit at for a while. The restaurant has an extensive menu, but when I saw the pitmaster section I knew I had to try some of that. As an appetizer there were potato skins with pulled pork. Wow, these are not the wizened, come from a frozen box, potato skins. These were large, brimming with flavor and cheese. From the pit was brisket and ribs. Each came with corn bread, one with fries, the other with mac and cheese. Corn bread, so good, nice grainy texture, not a baked sugar slurry like you can find elsewhere, up here in the north. The brisket is super tender, doesn't need much sauce because it's packing all that natural and smoke flavor. The ribs are not dainty. You're going to be getting in here with your hands, like proper ribs eating. I'm so unused to that, and it resulted in me bringing half the rack home because a half rack was so filling. The edges of the ribs were dry, but all the interior was pull apart tender and delectable. Again, only needing a touch of their homemade sauce. The fries were robust but still crispy and seasoned well. The mac was the only miss for me. Too toothsome and not much flavor. Because they also do wood fired pizza, I got a cheese with ricotta to go. I'm not sure I ever need their pizza again. The crust was thin but not very crispy except on the cornicione, which had a lot of herbs sprinkled on it. The sauce disappeared, flavor wise, and so did the cheese blend. Side notes - I know everything has gotten crazy expensive, but the prices here took me aback. $16 for three pieces of bacon? Also, the 10% military discount was only applied to my ribs, but nothing else, so I'm happy they have one but it may only be applied to your food and non alcoholic drinks on Tuesdays and Fridays during their specific windows.

I also got some BBQ chicken potato skins. The restaurant itself is very pleasant, a large interior that you wouldn't guess from the outside. It has a cozy ambiance, and it has a very local feel as a lot of the other customers and the staff seemed to know each other. The staff are also super friendly and there wasn't much time between any time I needed something and receiving it. The soup and salad bar is on the menu for $15 standalone and I'm not sure the limited variety warrants that, but as a part of the meal it was just enough. I really enjoyed the beef and bean soup, though the New England clam chowder was pretty bland. The salad bar was well kept and had enough to make a solid salad. The prime rib came out before the potato skins appetizer, so that was odd, but at least you know the kitchen isn't holding dishes up under a heat lamp. The potato skins were alright but the chicken was pretty dry and nothing I'd order again. The real disappointment was the prime rib. My knife wasn't sharp enough to get through the rubbery skin that surrounded it, rather than having a nice seasoned crust. The meat was firm and fairly flavorless, and the au jus that came with it didn't add anything either. The whole preparation needed more salt, pepper, herbs, and maybe a touch of aging to let it penetrate. The mashed potatoes and gravy, similarly, were bland and unenjoyable. I can say the menu is broad, so you may find something else on it, but I don't think this is your destination for delectable prime rib.

Overall, there's room for improvement, especially in consistency and seasoning. The staff and setting were fine, but the food felt like it was still in the "beginner chef" stage.

There was a good selection of specials that day but I settled on the beer battered fish and chips and the clam chowder. Clam chowder came quickly and it was a bit of a disappointment. It really should have been labeled potato chowder because that's what it mostly was comprised of. Very pieces of clam and the seasoning wasn't that great. Not sure there would be another order the next time I go to the restaurant. The fish and chips was the star of the visit. Fish had a nice light coating of batter, very crunchy and flavorful. As always the cod was incredibly fresh and flaky and well fried. The fries were also very crunchy and held their crunch throughout the whole meal. This is definitely a dish that will be ordered again. The seating is comfortable but it is an old style restaurant, think of going out to dinner with Mom and Dad in the 60's but don't let that put you off trying this establishment.

The ambiance inside is nice. The dining room to the left of the entrance contains many booths and…read morelooks to be updated in the recent past. Very nice. To the right of the entrance is a bar with high-top seating and an older dining room w/tables, Windsor style chairs and carpeted floors beyond the bar. A selection of country music played softly in the background. This is most definitely a 'local' spot. There were plenty of customers who know each other. They are very comfortable with the staff and each other. Pro top: If you are easily offended by 'salty' language, I recommend you sit in the dining room to the left of the entrance - furthest away from the bar. A hostess seated us with menu's, took our drink order, delivered it, then let us know our server would be with us soon. I watched the bartender making my drink and I'm not sure she actually knew what she was doing and the drink tasted that way so maybe it was something they don't normally prepare. Pro tip #2: The on-tap beer price is good. When our server arrived they were very no-nonsense (curt? brief? concise?). We both ordered entrees and chose mashed potatoes as a side. We were asked if we wanted gravy which was confusing because one of the entrees was fish and I couldn't imagine gravy on fish. It was for the mashed potatoes of course. Duh. So pro tip number 3: no matter what the protein, gravy is available for your mash. Although our soup and salad were immediately delivered to the table, we waited quite a while for our entrée to appear. After about twenty minutes or so (? could be less, could be more, not watching the clock, but we had an idea of when we arrived) I noticed our server walking by the table noticed no food. They went back into the kitchen and returned immediately with our meals. They were luke-warm and the fish had a 'hard' top. Not sure if it was under a heat lamp, but definitely had been sitting somewhere for a bit before arriving at our table. Knowing I'm not in the kitchen or do the ordering, here's a few things we noticed about our meal. The side salad was fresh and cold with a couple of green pepper strips, onion, cucumber and dressing served in a plastic container on the side. Nice option. The soup of the day was very much like a condensed version you can buy at the market. The pot roast does not appear to be the type of roast you purchase at the meat counter and throw in the over (or crock pot). It was more like a loaf of meat-pressed together bits. The texture was wrong. The spice on the Cajun salmon had a good level of spice. Mashed potatoes had large chunks of potato and little seasoning. The gravy looks like it comes from a jar. Based on taste and texture, I wouldn't be surprised if the pie came from a box. The drink prices are good, and most of the regulars were sitting at the bar, not eating. There was one large party that was eating so much food! Fish and chips, pasta, soup and way more. So clearly they have their fans. This is a case of know thyself.
