Great mid-trip stop, easy off the highway with easy parking, comfortable seating, and friendly servers. Big bonus: you can order lunch for breakfast. I'm a simple man: if I see a patty melt on a menu, I'm ordering it, even at 7am. And so I did. Choice of bread: I went with rye, which is the classic. Crisp, buttery griddled perfection. Choice of doneness: I chose medium rare and they nailed that perfectly without sacrificing outer crust. Cheese and condiments added creaminess, but the star was the VERY juicy patty. Great construction, great execution. Fries seemed hand cut and right in the sweet spot between crisp and droopy. My wife had a veggie omelette, which looked good. So did the toast, which was on the dark side but still pliable. Good home fries, with crisp exteriors, soft interiors, and ample seasoning. I like to look at other tables to see what other people are getting and if it looks good. Pancakes looked decent. English muffins looked outstanding, and not your basic Thomas's. read more

Service was attentive. Granted I went in on a relatively slow day and I was on my way back to Boston I decided to find a breakfast place. I got the impression that this is a local hang-out spot as many people came in and spoke to the Servers by friendly conversations. The decaf Coffee was so good I had like 3 cups and took one to go! Trust me when I say the Irish Eggs Benedict was dayum good! Home fries were just the way I prefer them and food came up fast. When the March / April edition of Yankee Magazine updated their "top New England diners" list, AND INCLUDED ZIP'S, it was only a matter of time. I am a diner person, and go out of my way to hit a great one, and hadn't been here in over 15 years (I think it was pie, maybe carrot cake, and coffee, on the way to Providence). Today, it was the full Monty - roast turkey w potato, stuffing, choice of two vegs, dinner rolls (I passed on this) and cran sauce. Also, choice of cup of soup or salad. I opted for New England clam chowdah (excellent). Everything hit the spot....no room for pie (or carrot cake for that matter). Zip's is one of those iconic diners, in Dayville since 1954. Same family, third generation. I met Kevin, 3rd gen owner. Very personable. He mentioned Zip's uses about 4,000 eggs (not a misprint) in a typical week. Local hens are exhausted, as are the roosters. Hours curtailed a bit in past few years, mainly due to shortage of kitchen help (note that food came out quickly today). There was no shortage of waitstaff. My server, Michelle, was the definition of excellent, efficient, effective, and as bubbly as a fine bottle of champagne! Definitely worth a stop. Bring your appetite. read more

Our experience at Zip's Diner in Killingly was downright terrible, and not because of the food it was because of the absolutely horrible service. Our waitress was completely useless from start to finish. She never came over to check on us, never refilled our drinks, and acted annoyed every time we tried to get her attention. It honestly felt like we were bothering her just by existing in the restaurant. By the middle of the meal, it became ridiculous. We had to get up ourselves to grab our own to-go boxes, and then again to get our check because she clearly couldn't be bothered to do her job. Having to chase down a waitress just to pay is absurd. At that point, it felt less like dining out and more like a test of patience that we were losing badly. To be fair, the food was very good. My stuffed French toast was excellent, my grandma loved her Irish Benedict, and my sister's regular breakfast platter was solid. The kitchen deserves credit, because they clearly know what they're doing but the abysmal service completely ruined the experience. Good food cannot make up for being ignored and treated rudely. Management needs to seriously get their act together or customers will keep leaving angry and frustrated. I would not recommend coming here unless you enjoy being treated like an afterthought while trying to eat a decent meal. This is one of the worst waitressing experiences I've ever had, and it's hard to believe it's still allowed at a business that otherwise serves decent food. read more

Came here after a long trip to Rhode Island. Heading home, we needed a quick bite so we came to this diner since it was one of the few options available that were open at this hour. The staff were, well anxious to close up and go home. The place was barren and we were the last people to come in that day. The place is a quintessential diner, tons of random foods, large cakes in the display, and non-working music players on each booth. We go through the options quickly, I opt for a monte cristo and the girlfriend goes for the pastrami with sweet potato fries. I ask for the french fries to be swapped out with mac n cheese, and they oblige. Food comes out quick, and we eat. Normally I would go over the highlights of the meal. But this food is not really memorable. it's functional, and for a diner functional is about what you expect. Since a monte cristo is a french toast sandwich, figured they would do things well. The mac n cheese is blue box, the sandwich is missing mustard or maple syrup, and the overall dish is cooked okay but nothing special. Same with the girlfriends pastrami sandwich. It was grilled heavy, leaving the meat greasy. combined with greasy sweet potato fries, wasn't very good. It wasn't a bad experience, wasn't good either. If you need something to eat, they do a decent job at getting you food. Just nothing here to write home about. Better diners are in the area, this one's mostly a pass. read more

Great little diner, I got the Zip's burger and it was huge! It and the fries were very good, the bottom bun was a little soggy but expected for a big burger such as that. Such a nice small-town diner feel. Would definitely go back if I was in the area (I live out of town). Would like to try their breakfast food sometime. Stopped by on a trip from Providence and needing something quick and solid. Saw the diner and pulled in. Classic diner atmosphere. Jukeboxes at the booths and counter seating. The menu is fairly standard fare. My dining companion ordered a turkey club. Always a safe bet and he ate it all. I had a western omelette with hash brown for a late lunch. Yum. Service was a little spotty as our waitress disappeared. No water refills for me. But the food came out quickly and the price is right. If you're looking for a diner, this is a decent place. First off, the food is always good here. Have gone to Zips over 50 times with family and friends over the past couple of years. However, i dined there on a Tuesday with my son and it was a complete disappointment. We showed up at 135pm ....they close at 2pm....and we received a nasty look from the server standing behind the counter. She was older and never really friendly so it was to be expected. We sat down and unfortunately she was our server and the interaction was a complete rush job to get the order and drinks so they could hi tail it out the door. Gave our order and by this time, two other tables came in closer to 145pm. Same server made some nasty comments regarding guests...the same ones who pay your dam bills...out loud for the restaurant to hear. One table who sat next to us also ordered in a rush and the exact same server made a comment to them regarding ordering to take it to go if they couldn't decide. They stayed and the server was rude to them for staying. Made them feel so bad they apologized for dining at an establishment at 145pm when they were open till 2pm. My son ordered two eggs and a waffle. He finished his eggs and the server came over and said to us "you mean he still has his waffle to eat?" and huffed and puffed herself away. One of the saddest parts to all of this the Manager...who I believe is also the owner... was in complete compliance with this ignorant server and her antics. I have never been in a restaurant where they were ungrateful to have someone support their livelihood...even if it was at 135pm a good 25 minutes before they close. As mentioned, the food is always good. But do not come to the restaurant anywhere from 130pm till 2pm or you will be made to feel like an inconvenience for supporting a local iconic restaurant. read more

Mediocre at best. Our waitress was awesome good came out fast and hot but it was flavorless and all of it was obviously frozen. Chicken fried steak had the same breading as the chicken tenders, and was clearly processed. I've been coming here for breakfast every Sunday for the past couple of months. I had tried a few other restaurants, and even some fast food places, before getting to Zip's, and now I'm hooked. Honestly, this WOULD be a five-star review, but I also got some lunch here once, and I wasn't impressed. The burger wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special, and I didn't finish the fries. Went there for the first time heading to our gig in Bristol RI Sunday. Heard they had amazing soup so had to find out ourselves. Ordered the clam chowder. WOW!!! Was GREAT! I asked for the roast beef on a round roll. It was NOT roast beef but to my surprise pot roast and it was amazing! My friend got a breakfast sandwich and clam chowder to go and my son got a burger. Zip's Dining Car is the epitome of a classic roadside diner (est. 1954) serving up breakfast (all day), lunch, and dinner. The place itself is a pretty cozy diner with a long lunch counter and booths along the windows. Each table and the lunch counter has a small jukebox. The menu offers the standard diner fare, nothing really fancy including typical breakfast dishes (eggs, 3 egg omelets, pancakes, hash, waffles, home fries, etc), sandwiches, rolls, triple deckers, burgers, soups, salad, chili, comfort dishes (meatloaf, spaghetti, chicken fried steak, pot roast, roast turkey with stuffing, Delmonico, & more) and seafood. Coke beverages and frappes are served too. The prices here are pretty reasonable and most items are priced under $10 (except the Steak & Eggs ($12.95),16 oz Delmonico ($16.95) and Seafood Platter ($14.95)-served Fri-Sun). On my way down to the casinos very recently, I pulled off I-395 at Exit 93 in Dayville for a lunch break and there was Zip's Dining Car (EAT), which is located very close to the highway at CT 101 & CT 12, hard to miss. The place was pretty busy and I grabbed a seat at the end of the lunch counter. I ordered the Lasagna Dinner ($7.50) which came with soup or salad, vegetable of the day and rolls & butter. I started out with a cup of chili which was very hot and had a sweet taste with ground beef, beans, & onions in a thick tomato base. The soft white rolls were warmed up. The entree arrived very quickly (in a ZIP!!!). The Lasagna itself was good, which was served in a hot casserole dish with dense layers of cheeses, meat, sauce, and noodles. However, the temperature of the lasagna was uneven, very hot in some places and not hot in other places. The side of broccoli spears were crunchy. I passed on dessert, which were chilled pie slices, shortcake, ice cream, jello, and baked puddings. Overall, a good lunch with friendly and zip-py service. I would definitely return here since this is a great pitstop, easy off-easy on. and only 30 minutes south of Worcester MA and about 30 minutes to the casinos. OPEN: 6AM-9PM everyday read more
