Food was tasty. However when people get seated after we ordered and get their food before us that is upsetting. We ordered soup and a sandwich. They had 4 meals and two brownie ala mode, haupia cake, and another item. Still they left before us because it took too long for them to process our checks....only 2 of us...soup was not too hot - forgotten on the counter...

    Peace...not too quiet though...LOL!

It was late. Driving back from Kaneohe and hungry. I just wanted something easy and no frills. Zippy's is the place! Friendly greeting, it was going to be a few minutes, and I was given a nice big table. I love eating alone! The Zip Pak looked tempting but I just went with my standard, spaghetti with meat sauce. Oh and a fruit punch of course. The server was friendly and what more did I need? Mahalo Zippy's!

Having just moved to Oahu less than a year ago, I really did not understand the hype around Zippy's. I finally got to see for myself when my husband said he wanted to go to Zippy's for his birthday dinner. Well, consider this haole fully converted to the Gospel of Zippariah. Although, I called ahead to put my name down for a table for 7 people, we still had to wait nearly 30 minutes before we got seated. I was surprised at how busy the place was for a Tuesday night. I counted only 3 servers, all of whom did triple duty as host, server, and busboy. Our waitress had the patience of a saint. Even though we had multiple requests for bowls, plates, silverware, drinks, etc. she was quick and super friendly. On our way out, I gave her an extra cash tip and thanked her profusely for taking such good care of our party amidst a very busy dinner rush. I wish I had more cash on me because I would have emptied my wallet to give her a bigger tip. For a diner-style menu, the food was delicious. Even our super picky 3-year old enjoyed her spam musubi and helped her sister finish a bowl of saimin. I love the variety of food and the fusion of Hawaiian, Asian, and American. There's literally something for everybody.

First thing we ate after landing in Hawaii with friends! This location has a good amount of parking and once inside the restaurant, there is plenty of seating available. There is a bakery inside as well for the goodies they offer! Our server was great, she was friendly, welcoming and took our orders shortly after we sat down and food came out in a timely manner!

You can never ever go wrong with Zippy's. After taking a trip to the mainland, I always crave this place. A Mini Chicken Katsu is a gift from above and the service is an even greater blessing. If you need a cozy place for comfort food, look no further since Zippy always has your back :)

I haven't been at the Makiki location in awhile. I believe I had some issues with service on the previous visit. Service was fine today though mitigated by ordering via their proprietary app. Zippy's app is very convenient and with fast and fast-casual eateries focused on takeaway...really helpful. I ordered the Korean Fried Chicken ( the only KFC ) Breakfast Plate. I chose the Pordagee sausage for the meat option. It comes with two eggs (over easy), two scoops of rice, and one scoop of mac salad. There are different options to choose from and it is so easy on the app. Filling and tasty...at $13 the KFC Brekkie Plt. is a good value. Fairly busy for a mid-Sunday morning. Parking accessible from Young St. and Beretania St. Lots of stalls.

It hurts my heart, and it took a while to decide to write this review. As most of us locals know, Zippy's is a local tradition. I remember the 'no questions' about where to go after a local sports event or after a date. However, it has been a while since our family sat down in the restaurant post-COVID. There was plenty of free parking because we arrived right after the lunch rush. I'm sad to say that the once familiar warm greeting at the line for seating was gone. I felt like my mom was telling me to sit and wait. When it was time for our party to be seated, there was no thank you or apology for the wait. Our server, Chingky C, and the kitchen's speed were excellent. She listened, and the food was hot when it arrived at the table. We had our go-tos--Korean Chicken with Chili, Chicken, the Kalua Pork special, and a couple of large fruit punches. We ended with our fav, Jello Parfait with chocolate ice cream in a banana split boat. Yum! The 3 rating is due to the initial lack of aloha and the prices (but the service was great and the food tasted what we expected). The plates or the portions looked smaller, or was it our imagination? We had to double-check the bill. No wonder one day at work, my co-workers were saying how "Zippy's is really becoming a locals' place where you go only when you have visitors from the mainland. It's so expensive!" I had the saimin instead of the Oxtail soup. I couldn't justify paying almost $30 for a bowl of soup. Sorry! I think we all understand the cost of food has shot up after Covid, but we get more value on the plate at local places like Rainbows, L&L, Side Street Inn, etc. We were surprised at the kitchen charge. Altogether with tax, our bill for four people was a little over $107 + tip. I think they created the Zipster Rewards program to regain market share in the local market, which is a good idea. With all of this said, we will be back when we have a craving for one of the Zippys staples, or we are short on time to prepare a meal. With so many other choices out there, my mom-in-law always said, "Yes, everyone needs to eat, but they don't have to eat yours. It has to taste good, they have to feel that you are giving them a fair price." Zippy's will always be (at least in my lifetime) a local icon. I'll always have fond memories of times shared there with family and friends. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to visit as often as we used to.

Holy moly! A toothpick in my side salad! I ordered the chicken trio with tossed side salad and no macaroni salad. I opened the salad dressing and drizzled the yummy Asian salad dressing into the salad. I placed the cover back on the container and gave it a shake to distribute the dressing. Upon reopening the container, I looked at it and the dressing seemed well distributed. I sat down to eat the salad and used the fork provided by Zippy's. I placed the fork deep into the salad, took a good amount of salad, and placed the salad in my mouth. Biting down, something went crunch and it was hard. At first I thought. Why is my salad hard? I spit out the salad and observed one very long toothpick!!! The type Zippy's use to place in the clubhouse sandwiches! Yikes! Good thing I bit down on the toothpick horizontally and not vertically! I immediately called Zippy's Makiki and spoke with the Manager Ivan. I informed him of the seriousness of the situation. He understood and took the information down and said he will inform staff and kitchen. The toothpick is used as part of Zippy's kitchen to front process for identifying certain orders per the manager. I opine that no such toothpicks be used! This could've resulted in a horrific injury. How did the toothpick get in the salad? That is the question of the day. Needless to say my dinner was ruined big time. How the food is processed from kitchen to front needs to be addressed. Maybe a fluke? I hope this never happens to anyone else. Please note that the take out section of this Zippy's is being renovated. It's under construction so it's a bit dusty and smaller in size. Side note: The manager offered a replacement chicken trio dinner. Your thoughts?

Breakfast Combo with rice, spam and the worst corned beef hash ever. Everything else was ok.
    Edward A.

Nothing special. Service was good. Do NOT order corned beef hash - I suspect that comes out of a white labeled can that says corned beef hash. I haven't been to prison but this could be what they serve as corned beef hash. Everything else was just ok. In the words of my wife, "it wasn't bad, it was breakfast." Add whatever tone you'd like. :)

I came here on Valentine's Day by myself while I was waiting for my dog to finish grooming at Petco down the road. I hadn't been here in many, many years, and it was nice and clean (I ate in the dining area). The food was as you expect from Zippy's, I can't complain. The fries were super fresh, which I really appreciated. Service was great, they weren't really busy at the time I went. Overall, liked this location.

    Korean breakfast
    Erik L.

Yes, we did it again, morning breakfast on a rainy Hawaiian day. My Korean breakfast was food, I just wish the eggs were flipped one more time to get harder. Our server was great in assisting us on what they did or did not have in inventory, such as Papaya missing. Love zippies

Chicken katsu plate with rice and mac salad.
    Alicia J.

I stopped in for a delicious chicken katsu plate. It tasted hot and fresh. They gave a generous amount of rice and macaroni salad. With a drink was less than $20, which is honestly not that bad compared to Waikiki and Honolulu prices overall. Service was quick and kind. There's plenty of space to sit and eat, and it's on the main road so there's plenty of parking in their lot.

    Loco Moco
    Kevin L.

Parking is plentiful. Noise level is kept to a minimum and there's an abundance of seating. Loco moco (4/5): sauce was good. The patty texture was great too. The egg was cooked nicely as well. Overall, portion size and food was solid. Tap to pay is accepted. Overall, Zippy's has some good comfort local food.

    When is this location reopening?

They were closing for two months due to renovation. It's been about a month now so it's getting close to finished. Can't wait till the reopen as the staff is so nice here compared to McCully!

    Do they allow dogs?

Even with a decent amount of seating, there is minimal space so they ask that you leave your strollers outside. When we called the first time saying our daughter was asleep they arranged everything in order to fit the stroller inside. The second visit, I had an even bigger stroller because it was a double stroller for my daughter and son. When I said my son was asleep they again, quickly tried to arrange space for the stroller until we realized he woke up. I truly appreciate them being so welcoming because I've come across many establishments that are not especially towards kids. As for the food, the first time the tonkatsu was a miss for me. I was comparing it to a popular spot on the island that books out months in advance that I tried just before my first visit here and it just seemed a lot more oily and not as tender. We were actually going to eat at the other business again but with two kids and walking non stop on our trip already, I was so happy we had an option closer to us. Both times, we were coming from Hilton Hawaiian Village. They have the cutest car bento boxes for the kids, and they let you choose the car color. My daughter loved the mini umbrella that came with her plate. My son was days before turning 1 year old so a lot of things ended up on the floor and even then, they were so kind about it. The best thing though for my husband and I AND my son, was the loco moco which we were told was limited and a new item for dinner since it was primarily only served as a lunch option? The flavor of the gravy alone was sooo good and rich. My son ended up eating my whole portion of rice and gravy with no crumbs left behind or on the floor lol. The other katsu items we ordered were nice and lightly coated and were not heavily oily at all. The only thing that I felt lacked was their curry especially in comparison to their gravy. I would definitely recommend coming here and I can't wait to come back. That was one of our favorite new dishes this trip and we come every year!

I got the pork loin with shrimp combo (the mixed portion instead of the large), and everything was perfectly crispy, flavorful, and satisfying without feeling too heavy. One of my favorite parts was grinding the sesame seeds myself in the little ceramic bowl with the wooden grinder, then mixing in the tonkatsu sauce. It made the whole meal feel interactive and intentional, and the sauce was SO good on the pork loin. I also ended up getting a refill of the cabbage because the sesame dressing they served with it was honestly addictive. I went around 8 PM to avoid the dinner rush and was pleasantly surprised I got a table pretty easily. Taking my time with the smaller mixed portion made the whole experience feel relaxed and enjoyable instead of rushed. Overall, really delicious food, great atmosphere, and one of my favorite meals I've had in Waikiki so far. Pictured are the before and after of my dish. Probably a better "go with friends place" than a date.

Menus, waters, plates, napkins, and forks were all brought out immediately, and our waiter was quick to take our order. We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.

Heavenly little restaurant with delicious healthy food and a friendly local vibe…read more Stopped in unintentionally at happy hour. The restaurant was busy but not crowded. Indoor and outdoor seating was available. We chose to sit inside and relaxed among the beach decor and pop music. The menu was limited due to happy hour but several wonderful options were available. We opted for a Strawberry Matcha Latte, the Organic Carrot salad, the Garlic Shrimp and a Mixed Berry Acai Bowl. Our food arrived in a timely manner, was well portioned, artistically plated and absolutely flavorfully scrumptious. The favorite was the carrot salad. It was lite, tangy, fresh and well textured. It was also surprisingly filling. Service was outstanding. Our server, Bruce T. , was highly attentive, personable and helpful. Pricing was reasonable. We would definitely return.

I've been eating at Heavenly Island Lifestyle about 10 times a year since 2018. I have eaten there…read moreso often because of what they were: a place with a beautiful inner spirit that celebrated Hawaii grown, and organic foods "whenever possible". 4 or five years ago they took a step down in menu diversity and freshness but I've continued to go, the folks there are nice. And it still retained much of what it was. Today I took my wife there and the menu is a shell of what it used to be. There was no steak option anymore. And the server (who is sweet) just let us sit for far too long between seating, order, delivery and check. And while the food is still good it is not superlative like it used to be but the prices are high, even by Honolulu standards. The lack of line out front tells the story: an outstanding restaurant has succumbed to the lowering standards that are evident in our whole society.

Plenty of outdoor seating and a solid variety of food options, but I went with the Haleiwa Bomber breakfast burrito. Honestly, one of the best breakfast burritos I've ever had. No exaggeration. And the kalua pork inside it might be the best I've had - crispy but tender, flavorful, and so addictive. Everything about it just hits that ideal balance of simple, filling, and really well-executed. Service was easygoing, the vibe is relaxed, and it feels like a true local breakfast spot.

We were looking for a place to grab dinner in the go, and decided we wanted to stick to Hawaiian…read morefood since we were in Hawaii. This place looked kind of cool, and we liked that kalua pork was in the menu. There is no dining room--rather there is a collection of wooden tables under string lights. Being near the International Marketplace, there was quite a bit of bustle (even on a Tuesday night) and it was nice to sit and watch the people go by. We both ordered the pork plate. It came with rice and a salad. Unfortunately, I didn't love it. Kalua pork is usually juicy and succulent. This was dry shredded pork. The sauce was quite good though. I didn't care for the salad dressing, but hubby did. We also ordered a iced Hawaiian coffee, and that was quite good All in all, this place got us fed, but I probably would not go back. Hubby said we might, though.
