The service is a bit too relaxed and maybe could be a little friendlier. I'm really just recommending them for the Hamburger steak plate. I have had it several times now and haven't been disappointed yet. Both eat in and takeout have been great.

First time I went to zippy's and I remember when they first opened at Prince Kuhio Plaza and I was so excited open on this island of Hawaii and the service is amazing and food come out so fast. I love zippy's and they are famous for they zippy's chili's and also there Apple Napple's and I love zippy's so much and I would rate this a 100 percent!!! And They should bring back Zipcoin and I will miss this soooo much!!! Thank you zippy's

came in and it was kind of weird the place is pretty much empty and there was my family (4) and another couple waiting to be seated. the lady comes over and tells us that we have to put our names on the waitlist and walks away. I was in awe.. I didnt have my phone so I had to borrow someone's phone so I could put my name on a non existing waitlist that made no sense.. we sat waiting for about 10 minutes for a table.. mind you the place has tables open 16 tables open.. they say the max waittime is 10 minutes (they lied) omg the food is something to be desired. they are giving local restaurants local food a bad name.. zippys was my family run to all the time in Oahu. breakfast, lunch dinner and even dessert.. they should have never expanded to the neighbor islands because they have fallen off of my go to radar.. im so sad...

    Chicken tomato soup plate. Yuck

Zippys Hilo is the worst!! I think they have their own recipes for everything. The chili taste like tomato soup, the chicken is worse then McDonald's chicken nuggets and to top it off they don't automatically add utensils! Don't recommend this place AT ALL!!

Went to Zippy's today to pick up some fried chicken and some of their snack salad waited 30 minutes girl couldn't even say my name right to correct her. I told her my name looks at me and snobs me suck my food got home feed my family and my chicken was burnt a whole box. Try to call the restaurant no one's answering and then when I do have someone on the phone all you can hear. Is someone breathing or like a fan blowing no one's talking? I'll try again. But I will not order food or eat there. I'll wait till I go to Honolulu

We ordered to-go at the counter just in case we can't finish the food and upon getting the food we decided to eat in the store but the waiter told us we can't eat in because we ordered to-go food. This type of policy is counter productive and stu***. Good thing we did not eat in the store coz after eating it made me rush to the restroom. And due to Zippy's proximity to petco you could smell the pet foods scent within the store.

I was going to give a poor review at first because we waited so long for our food at the diner in area! We had to get take out containers cause my son had to go swim lessons. I ended up eating in the car outside the fried chicken was so Ono! They must be under new management. Everything was moist and tasty!!!

No consistency. Got the Korean Chicken Breakfast Plate. This is what was given to me. This "plate" was $18. It looks partially eaten. Asked the server about it and she just told me that it only comes with 3 pieces. I also had asked for fried rice and was given white. Last time I ordered at this same Zippy's, I was double charged for a Korean Chicken Platter. Called the manager and he told me he would call me back. Never got a call back. It's been months. I keep coming back and try to give chance but the nostalgia isn't worth it anymore.

BIG ISLAND HAWAII 2023 VACATION #1: FIRST DINNER The first time I visited the Big Island was in 2018 to attend my nephew's high school graduation. Five years later I came back to the Big Island to attend his sister's high school graduation. Last week on Tuesday I arrived on the Big Island. I wanted to go to Zippy's as I've watched episodes of "Saimin Says" on Hawaiian Airlines when I was leaving Honolulu for Oakland on November 2020. The timing of going to Zippy's on Tuesday was fortunate because most of the restaurants I wanted to eat were closed on Tuesdays. When I arrived at Kona International Airport last week on Tuesday afternoon I drove about 1.5 hour to Hilo for my only meal at the Big Island that night. I ordered the chicken trio daily plate (fried chicken, chicken katsu, and Korean fried chicken) and saimin. As a mainlander I've ordered chicken katsu at other Hawaiian eateries in California and I have to say they are not crispy and moist as the chicken katsu I ate at Zippy's. The other two chicken items were also tasty. Saimin is becoming my favorite Hawaiian food as it's comfort food. Having a hot bowl of saimin at Zippy's, even though the weather was warm in the afternoon, was satisfying. As a tourist mainlander I was satisfied with my only meal during my first day in the Big Island.

Famous ox tail soup. It was so delicious.

Food was amazing. Our server wasprofessional and friendly. The place was not so busy which made our food service fast and easy. The best Zippy's I've ever been to.

There was also live music with a lady playing guitar solo and singing! Service was amazing! We never had to wait long to order/get the bill. We were most impressed by the fact that the waitress made sure to split our Hilo local plate into two plates to make it much easier to share! We almost thought we had received two orders because of how well-plated they were. - Poke tower (8/10): Solid choice for an appetizer! There were ample portions of poke, and the flavors were nice. Not a super stand out dish though. - Hilo local plate (9.5/10): If you want to taste a wide range of Hawaiian cuisine in one dish, I would highly recommend getting this one! The Kalbi ribs were sooo good! They were juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The Kalua pork was pretty good, and both meats paired well with the rice which had an interesting savory haupia sauce drizzled on it. The mango chili slaw and pineapple salsa added a nice tang to balance everything out. - Triple lilikoi pie (5/10): Wayyy too sweet and sugary for our liking, and you can barely taste the lilikoi flavor. We ended up just picking at the graham cracker crust and couldn't finish the rest. It seemed like one of those desserts that are premade unfortunately, and we wish we hadn't ordered this dessert.

The menu felt very "meh"...nothing particularly exciting or memorable. The cocktails looked great in photos, so we ordered the piña colada flight, but it tasted like there was little to no rum in it. Pretty presentation, but very mediocre overall. Food was just okay. The burger wasn't bad, but definitely not anything special. The fried shrimp dish was disappointing and lacked flavor. The big letdown was the ambiance. We were seated facing the street and parking lot the entire time ...no view...., just sad street. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype. Not terrible, but definitely not worth going out of your way for. The staff were all very nice though. Service friendly.

We showed up right when they opened at 5:30 p.m. without reservations on a Wednesday evening and was luckily able to get seated at the bar. Between the two of us, we ordered a bunch of items off the "small" section of the menu, including the smokey sashimi, sizzling tetsuyaki poke, smoked tonnato caesar, crispy rice, and their special of the day -- agedashi wontons. Of the items we ordered, the crispy rice and the agedashi wontons were my favorite items. The crispy rice is priced per piece, and you'll certainly want to order at least two per person, because one is simply not enough. The rice block is fried a beautiful golden brown -- similar to a hash brown. The crispy rice pairs perfectly with the ono mixture on top of it. With the agedashi wontons, I initially thought the filling was a bit under-seasoned at first, but when enjoyed with the broth, the wonton comes out tasting perfectly seasoned. The broth had so much umami to it and the wonton had the perfect crunch to it I always love a good Caesar salad and the one here is spectacular. With anchovy croutons, shaved cured egg yolk, and smoked ahi dressing, you're getting some creative, premium ingredients in this salad and everything works so well together. Even if you're not a salad person, I would definitely recommend giving this dish a try. On top of delicious food, the service at Moon & Turtle was spectacular. Food was promptly brought out after we placed our order, pacing didn't ever feel rushed, our water cups were never empty, and our server checked on us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed without being overbearing. I would definitely stop by Moon & Turtle again if I'm in Hilo.

Cafe 100 is a casual, local spot with window (staff) or kiosk (automated) ordering and plenty of semi-outdoor seating (i.e., you are technically inside and covered, but you can still feel the heat from outside). I will admit the menu felt a bit overwhelming at first glance because there are so many options available, but we visited on a weekday when it was not busy, so we were able to take our time deciding. Anticipating larger portions, we decided to share a mixed type loco moco plate along with a drink. That turned out to be a great call, as the portion was more than enough for the two of us, especially since we would not easily be able to take leftovers with us. This is casual, familiar comfort food done well. No complaints here, and I have already recommended Cafe 100 to a few friends :)

As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.
