The classroom! Showing us all the equipment and gear we would need for a canyoneering trip.

My husband and I took a 3 day instructional canyoneering course with Zion Mountain School and we could not be happier with the course and the experience. Our instructor was Jeremy and he was awesome (picture Jack Black, but with lighter hair!). Laid back, funny, yet very knowledgeable and professional with safety on his mind at all times. We chose to go with Zion Mountain School because the price difference for a three day course between them and Zion Adventure Company was significantly different. Not only that but Zion Adventure Company leads trips on specified days with multiple parties together. Zion Mountain School caters to each customer so you can choose your own dates and have a private guide. We also had to change our dates at the last minute and they were very accommodating. I wanted to try canyoneering because it was my 30th birthday and I wanted to celebrate in a way that was exciting and encouraged growth and learning new skills. I am so happy I took this course! The goal of the course is that after the 3 days, you should feel comfortable going on a canyoneering trip on your own (for 3BIII rated canyons). Canyoneering is so much more than I thought it would be. Canyoneering, or technical hiking, is exploring canyons - the guts of the earth. Generally, canyoneering involves rappelling into the canyon and following the flood/water routes - although often there is only a small amount of water. It involves not only repelling but stemming and down climbing. Stemming is when the walls of the canyon are so close together that you can put your feet on one side and kind of sit on the other side while moving along the wall to get to the other end. Usually you are doing this to avoid water below or simply because it's too narrow to actually walk on the ground in the canyon. Down climbing is just that, climbing down from a short height by using some stemming and rock climbing techniques. Canyoneering affords you amazing views you otherwise could not see. It also makes you feel so close to the earth, literally. It's also a great problem solving activity. You have to constantly be aware of your surroundings, figure out your way through a canyon, and decide where to put your anchor so you can safely rappel down a side of a cliff. It is a slow adrenaline rush and you feel so accomplished coming out of a canyon. Jeremy was a big part of our wonderful experience. I cannot say enough good things about the great time we had with him. We went to 3 very different canyons just outside of the park and we learned different techniques as well as being more comfortable with rappelling. By the 3rd day, we were essentially leading our own canyoneering trip with our buddy Jeremy along for the ride. He was a good teacher and was knowledgeable not only about canyoneering but also the surrounding towns and flora and fauna. We highly recommend Zion Mountain School and 2 weeks after our class, we've bought all our own gear and are going back to Zion next week for some more canyoneering. Thanks ZMS for the fabulous experience!

If you're looking for a fantastic outdoor adventure in the Zion area, look no further than Zion Mountaineering School. There are many options in the area and it can be hard to differentiate between them, but believe me, ZMS will give you everything you're looking for and more. We booked about a week in advance and had no issues securing the tour and time slot we were looking for which was wonderful. Our group consisted of 2 couples between the ages of 20 and 30 and besides myself, we have fairly minimal outdoor experience. Our guide, Dion, took such great care of us, taking our mistakes (such as getting a rope stuck at the top of a route) in stride and helping us conquer our fears and feel very safe all the way through. It was truly an experience I will never forget, and any time I'm in the Zion area I'll definitely be returning to ZMS!

There was a group of four of us total that signed up for an all-day class on rappelling. The class lasted 8 hours. We were able to complete six repels each. I'm glad that they don't offer a half-day class for beginners. An 8-hour class is needed if you have never done this before. On the last Rappel all of us felt comfortable and confident that we can achieve the next day adventure we had. Our instructors name is Dion. He had plenty of patience and very knowledgeable on what he was doing. We have been coming designs for the last six years in a row. We have all done the all the popular hikes more than once. We have a new passion for canyoneering. Advice, if you have never rappelled before I suggest you take an all-day class and learn how to do it so you will be confident on your own. All 4 of us agree on this.

Great place for narrows gear. Super friendly and reasonable prices. Even the climbing gear is priced well, better that REI in some cases.

Sick of your shizz, coronavirus! Initially I wasn't really sure what you expect from a Jeep tour, but I was pleasantly surprised by the fun, off the beaten path experience that we had taking the sunset tour. I was a bit leery of the Jeep and thinking it may or may not break down on a dirt road without cellular signal, but all is well that ends well. The ride was scenic and bumpy and an all around good time. Our tour guide was Zach(Zack?) and he was Ah-mazing. He was a great driver, funny, interesting, informative, and an all around joy to be around for our three hour tour. He shared lots of information on our surroundings, asked a lot of questions about our trip, and made a lot of great recommendations for our stay near Zion. If you can get him as your guide, you'll be in great hands. Overall a lovely time with spectacular views.

Canyoneering (rappelling, hiking, waters) from a newbie's view:…read moreI've only done Pine Creek (1st time canyoneering) and Mystery (2nd time canyoneering). Both are great but I would do Mystery again if I had to chose between them. Mystery is technical. I went end of May 2012 and it was great! Got there around 9am, and the canyons and downward hike was very cool until getting to really dry outdoor areas then it got hot. Other then that it wasn't really that hot. The weather was great when we went. You end up rappelling off a mini waterfall into Riverside (river knee high at time) and walk into the Temple of Sinawava area at the end. Beginning part is really tricky.....I was basically slide falling the whole time down, so dangerous (this is after the 45min walk to this place). Also, LOGS are very slippery from the rain or water. And there are some shortcut walks and downward climbs you can do around some of the smaller rappels instead of rappelling. Some downward climbs here are tricky, and I slip every time (get spotted!) But there are two big rappels you can't miss! Definitely need daisy chains for those. Came with 2 Trip leaders, 2 experienced canyoneers but 1st time here, and me and bf were newbies. Took us around 8hours to complete? But we were really trucking the beginning through cause the other group got stuck behind people the day before and took them 10hours? But they went with more newbies. Recommend: Some type of thick full gloves cause you'll be trying to grab whatever plants or rocks or items are around when going downhill in the beginning. No need to wear your harness until rappelling areas. If the river isn't too high, doubt you'll really need a dry bag for jackets and such unless you're bringing cameras and such. Water was nice so no jackets were needed. Water/hike (canyoneer) shoes and neoprene socks would be really nice to wear, you can get rentals). Bring at least 1L water per person, I brought 1.5L bottle from REI and that was perfect for a big water drinker. And remember to bring lunch, and your daisy chains! Rope - I'm sure your trip leaders will know what to bring. REQUIRED: A permit is required. Not sure how it works but our trip leaders got them so here's the link to more info: http://www.nps.gov/zion/planyourvisit/subway-and-mystery-canyon-reservations.htm. Go with professionals, or people that know what they're doing. Canyoneering is no joke.
