You are missing out if you don't do a canyoneering adventure with in Zion. Technically, there is no canyoneering within Zion but you'll be in the vicinity of the national park. We wanted to do something memorable during our trip to Zion and decided to go with Red Desert after our research online. Booking was easy, we were able to get same day reservation on the July 4th weekend. Our guide, Eric was amazing. He was calm, patient and pushed us just the right amount outside our comfort level for us to come back with great memories from the trip. Our kids, ages 9 and 11 did great. For one of the sheer drops, he did a tandem for our younger one. This was a private tour, the equipment felt clean and we felt safe and informed throughout our adventure. We did a canyoneering adventure that brought us to a beautiful slot canyon. I am not super athletic and this tested me physically and mentally, but everything was doable. Our guide Jack was patient and knowledgeable. My teenage boys and adventure-seeking husband loved this excursion. They were challenged and had a great time. Each trip is different depending on group size, weather, location, etc. Our trip to Yankee Doodle Canyon began with two big rappels. We needed the rope to assist with some areas of down climbing/stemming. The hike out at the end was some easy rock climbing/scrambling, but it was going up so it was strenuous. read more

We took our family of five (kids age 6-11) canyoneering for the first time. It was an excellent experience. Matt was a fantastic, calm, good spirited, and patient guide. We could not have been happier with our "high adventure" canyoneering trip down Water Canyon. Andy was a knowledgeable, friendly and experienced guide. He was very fun to spend the day with and the high proficiency of his skills was evident from the start. We did the half day canyoneering outside Zion and it was fantastic! I was leery at first because I'm getting up there in age and my body doesn't work like it used to but I was able to get to the top of the mountain and then go down 4 different cliffs. Our guide really knew his stuff and instilled a ton of confidence and was also extremely pleasant to spend half a day with. And it's not as dangerous as it looks but you have to be vigilant. I highly recommend these guys. One thing they need to work on though is how you meet your guide. We were supposed to meet him in the parking lot of grocery store but were never told specifically what to look for or how to go about finding him. I figured he would call us when he showed up. We called the main office a little after the scheduled time and the woman didn't take any initiative to connect us to him. All they need to do is have the guide call you at the scheduled time to tell you where they are. read more

Nathan was great! He took us to nearby canyons for our half day canyoneering trip. We "defied death" scrambling up rocks and rappelling down canyon walls. He provided the equipment, a safe environment and great stories. Definitely put us at ease and it was definitely tailored to "have fun canyoneering" rather than, here is an intro course so that you can be the next Alex Honnold of canyoneering. (If that's a thing..) and this is definitely the right approach to since we were there to enjoy what Zion had to offer with the limited time we had. I can't recommend this company enough! My husband and I had perfect 1/2 day canyoneering. I would not change a thing. I like that our guide gave us some options for our location so we were able to customize our adventure a bit. He was incredibly knowledgeable and professional. Don't be afraid to try and book something at the last minute. We scheduled our outing the night before. They don't have the online calendar scheduling like some other companies do but they answer the phone quickly and they do this so they can ask a few important questions about your abilities and expectations so they can create the best experience for your party. We did a wonderful short day canyoneering trip with Red Dessert. Our guide, Nathan, picked us up at our hotel and we drive out to Lamb's Knoll just outside the western edge of the park. He provided instructions on climbing up to the canyon entrance and rappelling instruction when it was time to head down. He engendered confidence in our group so that we unanimously elected for the taller of the final rappel options. Everyone had a great time and said they would do it again. Amazing! My fiance and I wanted to do a canyoneering trip while we were in Zion. There were so many companies to choose from, but we ultimately ended up choosing Red Desert for two reasons: 1) they do not charge extra to keep tours private (other companies did) 2) their website was the most descriptive and enticing. We were thrilled with our choice, especially when we encountered some other guides from other companies during our trip. The price is high- 500$ for two people- but that seems to be pretty standard for what it is and it felt reasonable due to what we got out of the day. We did the Advanced Canyoneering experience in early October with Nathan and ended up in Water Canyon and part of Black Canyon. For some background, both my fiance and I are rock climbers, so we both went in knowing how to rappel and aren't really phased by heights. Nathan is wonderful! He knew so much about the area, was super friendly, and really safe. Basically, it felt like an awesome trip with a friend- a friend that we had paid $500 for- but a friend nonetheless. And the sport itself was so cool! We opted for lots of water obstacles since that is not something we can do on a normal day and had a blast! Gorgeous scenery, challenging yourself, exploring canyons, and 200 foot rappels... What more could ya want? read more

My daughter (8 yrs old) and I did a full day canyoneering trip with Zack, and it was great. I had called other outfitters who said they would squeeze us in with other groups, making 10 people in a group, but Red Desert gives each reservation their own private guide. That meant that there was a 2-to-1 ratio on our trip that allowed us to get all the attention and instruction that we wanted. There were 8 or 9 rappels throughout the trip, with the longest one being over 100 feet, and most in the 50 to 60 foot range. The first two were through limestone which made for a tough start since it is so blocky, but after that it was all nice smooth sandstone. The worst part was the hike in and out, but all the rappelling was top notch. I felt totally safe with Zack giving instructions to my daughter, and the anchors seemed very secure. Dan took us to a quiet, beautiful slot canyon, where we saw no one else the entire time. We were a bit nervous and scared of the 150-foot rappel, but Dan was very patient and encouraging. A friend and I went on a half day canyoneering trip in Lambs Knoll this past week. Since I am afraid of heights, I was hesitant to go canyoneering, but it seemed like the unique thing to do when visiting Zion National Park and I needed to give it a try. I did a lot of research on canyoneering tour companies and decided to book with Red Desert Adventure based on excellent reviews and many beginners who shared their experience and felt safe. Our guide, Joel, is very experienced and has been climbing since he was 13. He guides full time all over the U.S. and is very experienced in not just canyoneering, but also rock climbing and other outdoor climbing activities. With his experience and number of guided trips under his belt, I knew I was safe. With safety not an issue, I just had to face my fear of heights. I wish I could say I conquered the canyons, but I was still very afraid to go down each one of the 5 canyons. Joel was very patient with me, let me practice many times until I felt safe to step on the edge and coached me down each canyon. At one point, I lost my balance and completely freaked out but he was calm and helped me get back into position. At the last canyon, we had to climb up it and then rappel down it. With no arm strength, I was sure I would not make it up and gave up, but he threw me a hand line, coached me up and also help me when I needed it by pulling the hand line! This was a trip of a lifetime! Not only did I get to try canyoneering, I learned a lot about myself and facing my fear. Joel was not just my guide, he was my coach in helping me achieve this! We just came back from Zion and did a family canyoneering trip with a 5 and 9 yr old. Eric, our guide was fantastic, very patient with our young girls and knowledgeable about the area. We went to Lambs Knoll and it was so fun, the best tour we have been on. Our girls loved it as well and it will not be something we can forget. Eric did do 2 tandem rappells with my 5 yr old to lessen her fear but she was able to do the others on her own. We did a half day trip which started at 7:30am or you could also pick an afternoon one that starts at 1pm. Eric came to pick us up at our lodge, the Cliffrose.
