A few days after enjoying our incredible trail ride at Bryce Canyon, we made our way to prearranged reservations for Zion. The two parks were vastly different: The Bryce ride takes you through vertical hoodoos, spires, dramatic colors and winding trails that weave you through layers of compact, distant multi-layered, eroded walls. On the other hand, the Zion ride slowly gains elevation and places you in front of 3000 foot walls surrounding you with distant rock-faces across the valley. Seems almost like a desert version of majestic Yosemite or vice-versa. After coincidentally, Bryce guide Cowboy Wquincy's Dad selected horses for riders, Little Jessie led us up the trail. She did a good job describing places of interest, but needs to project her voice as it trailed off at times. Old Veteran Jim was pretty talkative and brought us the way back. It wasn't a comprehensive overview trail ride of the park like Bryce, but you will see areas on horseback that may never see on foot. read more

Incredible experience and awesome for solo travellers! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable -- our guide, Hank, told stories and provided tons of information about our surroundings and the land. The horses were very well trained and seemed happy and healthy. Sandy was a gem. I took the 3 hour tour -- there were 8 riders plus a guide. The small group allowed folks to chat and get to know one another. I ended up running into riders from my trip later in the day which was a nice surprise! Overall, a 10/10 experience :) Pro tip, don't forget cash to tip your guide but if you do, you can tip via credit or Venmo from the check in pavilion. read more

Amazing experience! Canyon Trail Rides delivered a fun and adventurous three hour horseback ride down to the Bryce Canyon ground floor and back. Our guide was patient and very helpful with my two middle schoolers. Although the trail can be steep and narrow in places, we felt extremely safe and confident with our horses. No backpacks or water bottles are allowed on the trip but they had plenty of water for us and bathrooms at the midway point. The views were breathtaking and majestic! This was my daughter's first time riding a horse. We all three of us had a blast! The guides (cowgirls?) were excellent at making sure we were safe, and handling our horses correctly, yet willing to acknowledge that some of us were not beginners. Located just across the street from the Zion Lodge, our family took the one hour long Virgin River Trip with Cash and the Canyon Trail Rides crew. It was a perfect introduction to the national park and to horseback riding for us. If we came back (and if our daughter was a little older) we'd definitely try the three hour Sand Bench Trail trip, and would consider this outfit for their rides in Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The crew made sure everyone got a horse (or mule in my wife's case) that they could handle, and my 9 year old loved her time riding UB. Cash had a mix of corny (yet still funny) jokes and real information for us as we rode through the canyon to the Court of the Patriarchs and back. Cash made sure everyone was comfortable and riding properly the whole time, gave everyone encouragement, and generally made sure we all had a good time. There was a woman who left the ride halfway through, but it looked like her family was pressuring her to go on the ride in the first place and she was clearly uncomfortable. Cash let her leave at a place where she could easily walk to a shuttle stop, and then Cash managed his horse and hers on the way back. Very professionally done. read more

Amazing scenery, so if that's the bottom line for you then do it. My mule looked like he was dipped in mud then dried out for days. Super filthy. Many of the horses and mules were beyond what I've ever seen before in terms of dirty. Not exactly sure what was going on with that. Going through the paths they get right on the edge. No guard rail, but I guess they've done it so many times it's not much of a risk. With that said, 6 inches to the side and see ya. Would be cool if it was all horses and not mixed with mules. In the end it's AMAZING views. Just need to clean up the animals. Looks unhealthy. read more

I would give the ride five stars but our guide was uninteresting and, to me, careless. More on that later. First, don't pay too much attention to the spaces available on the website. If you aren't able to get them and you'll be at Bryce anyway, go to the stables and get on the waitlist. They said they can often find spots. Second, it's VERY poorly marked. Drive around the Lodge. When you see the antique gas pumps, turn right into the gravel parking lot. The stable is right in there. Third, the trail guide. He only stopped for photos two or three times. When he started back up, he trotted his horse, making everyone else feel as though they were falling behind. The horses at the back of the line had to trot pretty hard to catch back up. His commentary was irrelevant and dumb. At one point, we rode through an arch and there was a fairly sharp drop-off. This guy yelled, kicked his horse into high gear and ran (or fast-trotted) through, causing the other horses to pick up the pace. Not what a novice rider wants! So, definitely give the ride a shot. You'll be glad you did but you'll have to manage your camera and the reins. Have fun! read more

Took a 1-hour ride (2 kids - 8/11, 2 adults) August 2022. First horse ride for the kiddos. Booked early online - all email instructions were accurate and we were able to reach the parking lot without any hiccups (I would suggest making sure to leave plenty early to allow time to get through the Zion entrance gate). We checked in 30 mins prior to ride time, as instructed (helmets are provided on request btw!). That left us plenty of time to use the (clean) bathrooms at the lodge across the street and get back. I think there were about 25 guests total. About 15 mins prior we were assigned our horses; seems like they took good care to assign the horses based on rider's weights/ages and matched us the correct horse's temperaments. We received excellent help from the staff getting situated/stirrups adjusted on the horses and were given clear instructions on how to handle them. We were a little concerned at first bc my wife was assigned a horse away from ours, but when the time came to leave, they got all 4 of us back together, and we all left on time. We decided to take an early ride to avoid the heat later in the day and that worked out well for us. The horses all seemed to know what they were doing and looked like they are loved and well taken care of. Ride was easy and went well. Throughout the ride, Lance, our lead, engaged in consistent conversation with my 8 yr-old, who was right behind him, and made sure he was doing well throughout the ride. This was very much appreciated from the onlooking parents! The trail guides all gave out interesting information about what we were seeing as we passed by different points of interest along the ride. Kids really enjoyed it and said they would love to visit Zion again (as long as another horse ride was part of the itinerary). Great experience overall! Having read the previous reviews, I was expecting a healthy, and happy, herd of horses. However, I was extremely disappointed and disgusted at the treatment of the horses. My family and I were already in the park and decided to check out the facility as its location is conveniently in the park, and decided not to go on the trail ride because of the living conditions. I, unlike the other reviewers, have many years of experience working with horses and seem to be the only one here qualified to comment on their general well being/living conditions. The horses are tacked up for the entire day, kept in a small dirt pen, tied to the fence with about a foot of lead rope to move their heads, side by side, for hours in the sun without any shade/shelter/food/water in the pen for them to access at any given time. The bits that they use are incredibly large and painful leverage bits not to be used by the inexperienced rider, certainly not a first-time trail rider. Given that every horse is assigned the same style bit, it's safe to assume this severe bit is not used on a horse they believe needs it to understand the riders cues, especially not because trail horses are the most dull and gentle horses to keep inexperienced riders safe. They don't need strong bits because likely a heavy mouth horse is a danger to beginner riders. The tour guide, when I visited, was wearing fairly large spurs and using them irresponsibly. There is no need from what I saw for any of these horses to be ridden in spurs and strong bits. It's irresponsible to of them to not personalize the tack to the temperament and training of the horses. One horse I photographed was bridled over his halter and both had been put on incorrectly or had slipped over an ear and had gone unnoticed for way too long. I watched the trail guides come in and one of the horses tripped, and he yanked the reins three separate times using again the same extreme leverage bit. I also saw him carelessly spurring at the walk with no intention of going faster as he would yank the bit periodically to prevent forward movement. The horses weren't groomed properly and some had matted spots on their coats. I can't speak on the scenery (other than the trail seemed to show the same areas of the park as the hiking trails) or the service or anything like that, but I hope you take my advice and be more mindful about the treatment of these animals. To sum it all up... 0/10 I don't recommend. read more

We had a mama and kiddos date (total of 10 riders) riding horses at this ranch. It was SOOO much fun!! Absolutely unbeatable scenery, too. Our guides were so kind and patient with the littlest riders; who were quite hesitant and a bit fearful. They made them feel comfortable and took the time to ease their concerns before starting out on the trail. By only ten short minutes into the ride, everyone was having the time of their lives! Any fear was gone and only fun and awe remained. Our guides were so sweet, knowledgable and made sure everyone was happy and safe (horses included!). The price of the trail ride is MORE than reasonable! They also offer photos for sale that are the best pictures you can get on horseback! (Seriously!) Absolutely highly recommend this trail ride to all! Reserve early so they aren't booked up! HAVE FUN! read more

We did the Uncle Jim Trail ride and our guide Kitty was great! Entertaining and educational. Most of the ride is through the woods, which is pretty but would've liked to see even more of the canyon. You do get some amazing views during the middle of the tour. We hiked the Supai path the day before, so this was a nice way to see a different side of the canyon with the mule ride and giving our legs a break. read more

We took the 3 hour ride along the Sand Bench trail--gorgeous!! Our guide was kind, interesting, knowledgable and fun to talk with. My horse, Cochise, was a great ride (I have a little experience and appreciated a responsive horse!) and was very friendly. My beginner companion was given a steady, calm, horse that made the ride fun and easy for him. Half way through this very scenic ride through the canyon, we stopped for a bathroom and cold water break --very thoughtful on the part of Canyon Trail Rides.
