Riding along the backside of the Zion mountains…read moreprovides incredible views, and that part of the experience was something I genuinely appreciated. That said, a few things took away from what could have been a great experience. The horse I was assigned, Dash, had a very nervous temperament throughout the ride. She would frequently get startled and suddenly run forward, which made the ride feel unpredictable and unsafe at times. At one point she jolted so abruptly that I was almost bucked off, which ended up causing a pinched nerve that I'm still dealing with. Because of Dash's temperament I also couldn't ride near my partner, so we spent most of the ride separated. As first-time visitors to the area, I was also hoping to hear some history or information about the landscape we were riding through. Instead, there was very little guidance or storytelling during the ride. If it weren't for the light conversation from Wendell, the wrangler riding toward the back with me, the ride would have been largely silent. Another issue came at the very end of the experience. During the ride, the front wrangler offered to extend our original one-hour ride. No one in our group had asked for an extension -- it was presented to us as an option while we were already out on the trail. After we had finished the ride, gotten off our saddles, and were preparing to leave, we were then informed that the extension came with an additional $140 charge on top of the $224 we had already paid to book the ride. That cost had never been disclosed when the extension was offered. Had we known there would be an additional charge, we absolutely would have declined. Learning about it only after the ride was finished made the situation feel misleading and left us feeling taken advantage of. I don't want to disregard the beauty of the scenery or the time spent on the trail, but between the unsafe temperament of Dash, the lack of information shared during the ride, and the undisclosed charge for an extension that had been offered without mentioning the cost, it significantly impacted the experience. For those reasons, I feel a three-star review is fair. Hopefully this helps future guests make a more informed decision when booking.

In my opinion, the best way to do that is to take a nice trail ride with some real live cowboys-and that's just what we did! Chase and Jake were our guides and they did a wonderful job of making us feel comfortable. The horses, Junior and Sugar, were well trained and fun to ride. I appreciate that our trail was not just flat-we got to go up and down hills a bit to get the full effect. I felt like a real cowgirl! ;-) They were telling us that in the summer, they do rides up in Pine Valley, which is an entirely different landscape. I'd love to come back and give that a try!

I begged my mom for lessons growing up, but she couldn't afford them. However, she signed me up for a couple of trail rides and they're a core memory. Two decades later and my affinity for horses hasn't wavered, mostly because I moved to Saint George--a town where I'm surrounded by these gentle giants in every direction I go. Naturally, my 5-year-old daughter loves horses too and wanted to take lessons. I took her to a different facility that showed a bunch of red flags, so we didn't go back there. Then, I found Shauna at Haskell Riding Academy and instantly clicked with her when we met. What started as an inquiry for my daughter ended up with me taking lessons instead. I started riding with Shauna two months ago and it has quickly become my favorite form of therapy. My stress instantly turns to stillness at the stable gates. Anyone can benefit from being in the presence of these sensitive souls--they're very healing beings. I highly recommend getting lessons with Shauna. Learning a new skill as an adult can be intimidating, but she's very patient, kind, and knowledgeable. I really appreciate how particular she is about doing things. She'll always explain why she does it a certain way, and it always makes perfect sense. There's a reason her horses age gracefully, like Tag who I've been riding. He's in such great shape, I would have never guessed he's 29! Also, some of her horses have blue eyes/pink skin and they wear protective masks to reduce their risk of cancer. These are just a couple testaments to how much she loves and cares for her horses. Here's a photo of me and my daughter, Shauna let her join me at the end of my lesson. It was such a nice surprise, my daughter loved it. I'm looking forward to growing as a rider and can't wait for my daughter to start riding when she's a bit older. I know she'll be in good hands with Shauna!
