Ice water: go inside and help yourself. Mandatory pre-selected tip: 25%. Service attitude: meh. Then, as you opted for the convenient method above, they charge you 99 cent extra. For every order. OK, if you care to hear more: I was born and raised in Germany. In Germany, staff gets paid by the hour, so it's typical to "round up": on a €44 check you would possibly give €47-48, €50 would be considered generous. STILL, when I get asked what would be the first you would import from the US, I suggested "the way you tip service". For decades, 15-18, max 20% was the rule, and you got excellent service for this. I preferred excellent service over saving money in a restaurant. Now, they led us to believe that service does not get paid and their tip is what they take home. Also, they want is to believe that 15% tip is almost an offense as everything got more expensive. A server at Zinqué Malibu earns a legally mandated minimum of $17.91 per hour before tips. Zinqué does not publicly disclose its exact hourly rate; its job postings describe compensation as "hourly + tips," based on experience. True: everything gets more expensive. Every year. So if prices adjust for a sandwich, so does the tip, it's whatever percent on top. So "everything is more expensive" is covered by the higher tip. Zinque offers substandard service, suggests an extra 25% as default for it, and then makes me pay extra for them reducing the service. I still believe that great service deserves recognition. Sadly, I also believe that whoever is behind this, has lost his mind. As much as I love the ambiance of this place, I will not go again. Possibly they would not even want me to come again. Fair enough. During my visit, max 20% of the tables were taken, rather less. Maybe there are more people like me. Again, to make sure we do not misunderstand each other: I have no objections to have an online menu. I prefer a "real" one, but then, digitalization will take over. Fine. the service here was so disappointing! we came here to celebrate a friends birthday. one of us called in advance to see if leaving a cake in their fridge was ok, and after getting the green light came to the restaurant early in the morning to deliver it. we got to the restaurant at 6:30, and after being sat we started to notice that it was taking quite a while for them to come take our order. it's a saturday night so they were kinda busy but the patio still had plenty of seating left. one of the waitresses was very nice and offered to get us some extra bread for no charge to eat with our charcuterie board, but it never came the real issue arose with the cake... after eating we asked for it and it genuinely took 20+ minutes for it to appear on the table. i want to stress that we were not asked if we would like the cake cut or not when we first asked them to bring it. about halfway into the wait one of the employees came by and asked if we wanted it cut, and we said no, because we wanted to put the candles on it and cut it ourselves. our cake finally appears and there is a single cut in the center of it. once we got the check we saw that there was a 20 dollar cake cutting fee added to our bill. again, we weren't asked at first, and once we were, we said no. idk :/ aside from this, the food was ok. the steak and frites with the chimichurri sauce was alright. i really liked my leek quiche. fries were really good actually. but unfortunately this experience was really tainted by the service. i don't think the staff communicated with each other at all. read more

Visited Zinqué over the weekend for a work meeting while on a business trip. It was a hot day and we ended up sitting in the corner. Unfortunately, the service was really slow. I tried the green lasagna, which was fine. For appetizers, we had the falafel and shrimp--both were absolutely delicious. My cousin ordered the steak frites, but they were a bit dry. It looked cute, had plenty of people, dogs on the patio, and we were craving a light bite -- so we thought, why not? I love when an unexpected dining experience hits and completely exceeds your expectations, and Zinqué did exactly that. We arrived at the perfect time: happy hour. Both of our drinks were included, and they offered a deal on any three tapas. We tried the deviled eggs, chicken wings, and burrata pizza -- each one was elegantly plated, packed with flavor, and exactly what we needed. Their drink menu is extensive, with tons of happy‑hour options. I especially appreciated their long wine list and that they clearly mark which wines are organic, natural, or biodynamic -- something I always look for and can be hard to spot on menus. Service was excellent. Our server was friendly, attentive, and even chatted with us for a bit. The space is beautiful, dog‑friendly, and has a great outdoor patio. Inside, there's a cozy lounge‑style area in the back and a half‑circle bar. They also offer Wi‑Fi, making it a great spot to get some work done while enjoying a drink. On the way out, I noticed they have a connected store and café with home goods, kitchen items, artisanal snacks, cheeses, wines, and even an espresso bar. This is the best little gem of malibu for a delicious meal, laid back vibe, and convenient shopping in the store connected to their restaurant. The steak frites has got to be the best in the city. I do not say that lightly! They're super nice here, you pick your own seating and order from a qr code. I never feel rushed and it's one of the least pretentious places in malibu. We came to Zinque for a quick late brunch on Sunday and had a lovely time. I've been to only the DTLA Zineque while it was my first time here at the Malibu location. Parking was super plentiful on a weekend which was great. It was also easy to make a reservation on OpenTable. Once we were seated, we took outdoor seating and the wait staff/front of house was super helpful/kind. One small feedback note is that they seemed a little slow on service at the outset. However, it was easy for me to flag down one of the staff members to help take our orders. We got a few delicious items. The quiche lorraine in particular was solid and pretty big. We loved how custard-y the quiche was and the fries we asked to be extra crispy which was great. We also got the sunrise juice which was refreshing (could even be stronger on the ginger for us) and the avocado toast (loved how it was a play on pan con tomate (although wish it was a bit bigger). It has been awhile since I've been in this particular shopping center so I was surprised to see Zinque take over this large space. A small group of us came for bunch during a work day and overall we had a good experience. Zinque seems to be a mix of a retail store with a coffee shop, dining, with a casual customer service approach. After reviewing the menu, we ordered our food and drinks from the front kiosk. Around the corner to wait for our drinks. From there we were able to pick our seats from the vast dining area. The table shared a the olive oil cake and a berry cake/bread (I think it was a bread) where the olive oil cake was the clear favorite. For my main I went with the bacon and potato burrito. Although the burrito was on the smaller side, the taste and flavors were tasty. I wish there as some sort of side included with the burrito though. I think Zinque is here to stay in Malibu and I'd be open to coming back. The dinner menu looks enticing! read more

Happy Hour! On Monday through Friday you can pop in for some happy hour! Happy hour is 3-6pm at the bar and high tables. Happy hour consist of 12 dollar craft cocktail, discounted wine and a tapa special. Tapa specials includes you pick three for 13 dollars. We chose to get pork belly taco, pate and prosciutto flatbread. Gosh that's a lot of pork! As always our cocktails were amazing! Husband likes the beers on tap, as some of the tap beers can only be found in bottles at other places! The appetizers were good with some modifications: we found the pate tapa bread to be super hard but the staff quickly replaced the bread without any problems! We had a reservation for Thursday evening, and everything was nice at first. Unfortunately, the service quickly went downhill. When we ordered, one of my friends did not like his alcoholic drink, and it took quite a while to get someone to come back to our table. Throughout the entire dinner, no one came to check on us to ask how our food was or whether we needed anything. It felt like they took our order and then completely forgot about us. One interaction also made our group feel uncomfortable. When one of the staff members, an older, shorter man with glasses, took our order, he responded to my friend with "gracias." As Hispanic customers, some of us felt singled out or racially profiled, especially because our non-Hispanic friends noticed it too and thought it was strange. They even commented that he could have simply said "thank you" like he did with others. Later, when we asked to have the alcoholic drink removed from the bill because my friend genuinely did not like it, the same employee became very aggressive and judgmental. He repeatedly asked, "What happened, guys? You don't like the drink?" and kept questioning why my friend did not like it and what else we wanted, but in a rude and diminishing tone. We felt dismissed as customers, and the situation was handled very unprofessionally. The food was okay, and the ambiance was nice, but the restaurant was also very hot inside and did not seem to have adequate AC. The biggest issue was the service and how we were treated. Our experience left our entire group feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome. I personally would not recommend coming here based on our experience. read more

We were up visiting a friend in Malibu on a Sunday morning and not sure where to go that would also be kid friendly. We stumbled upon Zinque when driving thru a plaza and decided to try it. The menu is quite comprehensive and is French inspired. Two of us ordered bowls (breakfast and protein)....but were generous portions with fresh veggies, well prepared rice, and a protein or two. My other friend ordered the blueberry buckwheat pancakes, which were thick and fluffy(and quite tasty). On my FIRST visit to this establishment, in hopes to use the $20 off $60 order coupon via InKind app, I quickly changed my mind! Left immediately lol. We were trying to find the correct entrance to the restaurant, as there are multiple doors in the front (see photo). Instead of going inside to view the menu on our phones , we chose to sit outside to view. We were then approached by Alex, who seemed to be the hostess or front of house staff. She came outside to bring us menus, but we let her know that we were trying to utilize the deal/coupon. It became very clear to me that she was uninformed about the deal. Which is fine. There was apparent attitude when she realized its applicable for pickup order only. She proceeded to tell us we can't sit outside for this. Then she followed up with, "Or I guess you could, but you'd be eating out of to-go boxes and stuff." Which we were fine with. I let her know we're simply sitting outside of the restaurant trying to figure out their menu and what we should order. She responded back with attitude saying "ok I just came over to give you guys menus" with a dead straight look on her face. She then moved over to help the table adjacent to us. Such terrible service, took us a long time to even get our order in and had asked for water and didn't receive any until I asked when my food came. I would've asked sooner but I was not being checked in on at all. The portions are absurd, we payed nearly 40$ for the couscous royal which had barely any meat considering the price. There was literal specks of beef in my pasta so nearly zero protein for a thirty dollar pasta. Also had a dirty martini which was the worst tasting martini I have ever had and asked for a swap because I couldn't stomach it and was charged five dollars for the swap. Oh and on top we get our plates wiped from the table and waited thirty minutes for our check to come, such an awful experience. The service was genuinely so horrible and never received such. I'm not a huge fan of the food overall, but the breakfast is solid and the gluten-free pasta is great (except for one time when there was a bit of metal in it, which I feel is worth mentioning). The atmosphere, locals, and staff are all wonderful friendly, helpful, and peaceful. I come here almost every morning, and it's the perfect place to work on my laptop. I really dislike writing bad reviews, it goes against my optimistic persona. And I thought about this the past 9 hours. But, bottom line? A business should hear these things. To put into context, sadly we all are getting too used to the idea of ridiculously high prices (not exclusive to Malibu now, but everywhere). But couple that with other must-haves in the hospitality business (the food and the service) and it's a recipe for business disaster. My scenario: it can be a little excuse that I was eating a late lunch (near 3p) on a Monday. But it was a gorgeous weather day and perfect for a bistro-like lunch. The restaurant looked very quiet, less than 1/3 full. And apparently very understaffed (appropriately so). Fine, I order at a window and food gets delivered to my table. Like a fast food franchise. Unfortunately, unlike a fast food joint... my hamburger/fries and Arnold Palmer came to around $35. Not a typo... $35. Sorry, that included a gratuity for the kitchen. But, for what. In the casual 35 minutes of eating (a good tasting burger) not one visit from staff, no refill, and no offer of water. When I left (desperately hankering some water), I was informed "there's a water station over there"???? The hamburger and fries was good. Messier than it needed to be, but good. OK, well, that's my beef. Guess it is like fast food dining, with upscale pricing. Now I know! Next time I can eat the exact same fare at In 'n Out and do it for less than half the price. Zinque Malibu is a favorite among locals and the ambience is perfect for casual business meetings, working or a friendly get-togethers. I feel like every time I go in there I run into someone I know, which is nice! The service is OK, not one of the weight staff has ever gone above and beyond the basics, and I've noticed they have high turnover. Food is always consistent, good but a bit on the pricey side. The bread was truly fantastic -- so fresh and comforting. Was excited to try Zinqué after watching one of our fav YT vloggers rave about the location on Melrose/WeHo (they did take out and apparently their takeout dinner was so good that they dined in for brunch the next day). We were originally gonna go to Sawtelle or Venice for lunch, but the road getting out of Malibu from the south side was closed so we had to decide on where to eat in the area. If we were able to, we would have gone to Belle's Beach House where we always have a great time. We decided on Zinqué over Malibu Seafood or Broad Street (little did we know we made a bad choice) because we wanted a bigger patio area with better drink options. To summarize, our server was very.. IDK, either high or had a very "go with the vibes" attitude. It was very hard to flag her down for anything, she seemed to have an attitude with other patrons around us, we had to flag down somebody else (the bartender, who was actually nicer) to order another food & our check, didn't check on us once. And to top it off, for some reason, their tip selections were 20%, 25% AND 30%. That service was definitely nowhere near a 30% tip service, let alone 20%. And we couldn't even leave with a "have a great day." Good thing we will never go back, at least to that location. read more
