1.) Just to warm you up: Came here with Yelper extraordinaire Eric H. He seems to know the good spots so I drunkenly followed him after a happy hour spot to this wonderful place known as ZINC. 2.) What your eyes may see: Upscale. You'd be comfortable wearing a suit blazer and dress shoes. 3.) Food: I had the pork shumai steamed dumplings, Saigon Style Braised Beef wrap, smoked duck breast nachos and fried wonton skins with chipotle aioli. I live right around the corner from Zinc and have managed a couple visits, once for a Restaurant Week lunch in 2008, and once for a nice night out with my boyfriend. I was relatively unimpressed the first time, and while the second time around was better, I think New Haven has enough upscale options for Zinc to be skippable. I will back up for a second, though, and acknowledge that I like the focus on good ingredients, and that I'm planning to try and expecting to love Kitchen Zinc. I don't remember much from my meal in '08 except that I was disappointed in the dessert. I had high hopes for the Chai creme brulee because - well, doesn't it sound good? And it tasted good. Unfortunately, creme brulee is around 30% flavor and 70% texture as far as I'm concerned, and this was runny, and I was sad. Nonetheless, I was excited to give it another try after reading so many positive Yelp reviews. I'm glad I did, because the food was better the second time around. But first, a couple of gripes unrelated to food. 1. The space is pretty snazzy and coolly romantic, but we got stuck at a bad table. If the maitre d' happened to have stomach problems, we were right in her line of fire. Luckily, she did not, but it still felt strange to be within smelling distance of the front desk of the restaurant, and I'm not convinced there should even have been a table there. 2. While our server eventually recommended us a nice Rioja for a reasonable price, his first suggestion was one of the most expensive wines on the menu. We were obviously student-aged and on a date, and I thought he kind of put the payer on the spot. Okay, whining over. The meal was pretty good, starting with the complimentary corn and fennel bread with yellow pepper chutney. It boded well in terms of both taste and innovation. We skipped on appetizers and I ordered the seared Maine sea scallops with red wine orzo, swiss chard, black olives, capers, and white anchovies. I was saddened by the absence of all but one anchovy with the orzo but this was a great entree. The scallops were meaty and well-seared and the orzo was fantastic, a gorgeous mound of slippery little grain-shaped jewels. I stole some of my boyfriend's grilled tamari-cured tuna with wasabi oil, vegetable spring rolls, and fried spinach. The tuna was nicely rare and pretty tasty, though I prefer my tuna slightly firmer. The spring rolls were pretty standard. The standout element of this dish was actually the spinach, which was tasty and delicately crispy. For dessert I ordered the pumpkin and apple parfait and my boyfriend ordered the warm bittersweet chocolate cake. The parfait was a good mix of sweet and tart, with pumpkin spice ice cream, roasted apples, and cranberry foam in colorful layers. The chocolate cake came with gianduja ice cream, hazelnuts, and hazelnut foam. It should've been better, frankly. The cake lacked moisture and richness, and without those, chocolate cake is just not worth the calories. Overall, I'm happy that I gave Zinc another spin and the meal was perfectly lovely. That said, while everything was decent, nothing was phenomenal. As Zinc is something of an occasion restaurant and I have scant occasions left in New Haven, I probably won't have reason to come back. read more

Alright, Zinc, I'll give. I've learned to like you....quite a bit. One of my girls and I decided to venture out for dinner in New Hay on a Wednesday night and settled on Zinc. We didn't have a reservation....and turns out it was restaurant week, so we probably wouldn't have gotten a table anyways. However, there was plenty of seating at the bar (which we both prefer anyways!) and comfortably so. The bartender was super friendly and knowledgeable; he recommended a nice, bold red wine for me (I've been on a weird kick of barbarescos, barberas and Tempranillas lately) and a white wine that my friend enjoyed. We contemplated both the regular menu AND the restaurant week menu...and settled on blue points off the regular menu to start and the restaurant week to continue. The food was DELISH! The oysters were fresh and tasted perfect. I had a crab salad for an appetizer-light, but flavorful. My friend had a regular salad...she liked it. We both went with the short rib for dinner...and so.darn.good. It melted in my mouth--I didn't even need the knife they gave me to cut it. I was very tempted to order the pork belly from the regular menu--but my friend does not eat pork, so I'm saving that for another time. Oh--and they were VERY accommodating of my Celiac. I mentioned it to the bartender and he went right back to the kitchen and let me know what I could and could not eat. They even tweaked my short rib so that it wouldn't give me a reaction. So after a bit of a hiatus, my wife and I dined at the bar again this past Thursday and the bartender Steve was a pleasure as always. Here's a fun fact: Steve is a master mixologist on the side and creates the seasonal cocktails on the menu! Kudos to you, buddy! Aside from the smoked duck nachos and and pork ginger shumai that we always get, we also tried the organic greens salad and the beef Thai lettuce wraps. They give you a sizable amount of mixed greens and the salad is well tossed in their white balsamic vinaigrette. I'm all about copious amounts of flavorful salad dressing with my salads and they definitely don't skimp in this department! Topped with thin shavings of the California dry jack cheese is akin to a Parmesan, the cheese here works so well in this tasty salad. Rounded out with caramelized onions to provide some sweetness and toasted punkin seeds to add nuttiness and textural contrast, this salad is one for the books. The beef Thai lettuce wraps are also quite good, and again a damn steal during the half priced bar menu on Tues and Thursdays. The beef is diced small and perfectly proportioned so that you can wrap it comfortably in the fresh, velvety organic Boston bibb lettuce. Boston bibb lettuce is the perfect choice here, as it has this cloth-like consistency that is the perfect vesicle to transport the beef int o your mouth. I had to go sans peanuts being that I have a mild allergy, but that didn't detract from the flavors in this healthy flavorful dish. To keep with their Asian inspired theme, there's pickled ginger in the center as well as lime wedges to add some acid to each beef lettuce wrap. I highly recommend that you use the lime juice to really bring out the flavors here. read more

I stopped by this place on Wednesday having already made reservations so seating was relatively quick. The decor was nice and our waitress was very friendly and informative about the daily special. But onto the food. For an appetizer we got the pork belly, which I highly recommend. Nice and crisp on the outside, with strong smoky flavors contrasting well with the fatty interior. It was paired with some greens and a nice and spicy reduction which served as a good counterpoint to the heaviness of the pork. Though I must add it almost felt like they were bribing us with fat and could have chosen a cut with a little more meat. Entrees were equally superb. I got the harissa lamb while my friend got the sea scallops. The lamb was cooked to perfection, and the sumac and feta based yogurt sauce went well with the lentils. Speaking of the lentils, they were a bit overseasoned and drowned out the gentle lamb flavors. I had the opportunity to try some of the scallops as well-they were cooked just right , having a nice char but remaining soft and not too rubbery on the inside. Dessert consisted of the flourless mexican cake with toffee ice cream - a nice finish to the meal, with the slightly bitter chocolate helping to refresh the palate. In summary, this is quite a nice place to either take someone on a date or enjoy a fancier meal. Keep in mind though, the food is not cheap and for the price point you would expect to be more blown away. Nonetheless, I would recommend Zinc - just don't expect to be completely floored. read more

To be truly exceptional, New American cuisine needs inventiveness in both ingredients and presentation of menu items. Zinc excels in both categories, and paired with the modern ambience and great service, this places Zinc in the five-star category. We had drinks, apps, and dessert in addition to our entrées. At first glance, my wife and I werent sure what to expect from the menu. Little did we know that each plate from the appetizer to the dessert was full of such depth. Being that it was our first time there, our waitress was great about suggesting a few cocktails and sharing her menu favorites. Recommend the Shrimp with plantains as a starter. The Baramundi was perfectly crusted, served on a bed of sweet and sour Kale balanced with pieces of smoked bacon for just enough saltiness. Of all the restaurants I have been to, I have never tasted a more amazing dessert than the Pot De Creme - Writing about it wont do it enough justice. Just think - Milk Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Caramel Gelato. Just order it to see what I am talking about. You will not regret it. Tried Zinc for the first time with a group on Saturday night and it was absolutely wonderful - perfect from proverbial soup to nuts! Our server was attentive without being over the top. Each course was beautifully plated. Offerings were paired with unique flavors to make the entire dining experience memorable and exciting. House rosemary bread squares with spicy dipping sauce were a fun treat to pass around the table. Duck nachos were delicious! I would have liked a slightly larger portion and a tad more duck but they were so good and I would order them again. I split the hanger steak and ahi tuna mains with my dining partner. The hanger steak was topped with a chimichurri sauce and served with a kale salad and sweet potato fries. The steak was straight butter and cooked medium rare as requested. The ahi tuna steak was huge! It was served with the most delicious (albeit a tad oily) spinach chips and vegetable spring rolls. Both entrees were cooked perfectly and would be happily ordered again. For dessert we split an Inside-out caramel creme. The saffron custard was creamy and subtlety sweet. The apricot sherbet was just the right amount of tart, and the crunchy granola(?) had darker and bolder caramel notes. I'm not ashamed to say we swirled our fingers around (you would too!) and finished what remained of the caramel from the plate. I can't wait to go back to try the prix fixe seasonal menu! My family and I went to Zinc recently to celebrate a special occasion. Zinc is located on Chapel St in New Haven, where parking spaces are few and parallel parking is required. Luckily, Zinc provides a voucher for parking in either the Temple Street Garage or Crown Street Garage. I recommend the Crown Street Garage as it is closer to the restaurant. The vibe of the restaurant was upscale, though most of the people eating there were dressed in casual clothing. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive throughout the meal, filling our water glasses frequently and clearing plates in a timely fashion. In terms of food, Zinc could best be described as American with an Asian twist, or perhaps Pan-Asian with American flare. Their menu seemed to have a dish from each major country in Asia (Indian saag paneer, Korean bulgogi, Vietnamese grilled chicken etc.) We enjoyed their complimentary flat cake fennel bread with a sweet and spicy dipping sauce, which was a nice change from the usual bread and olive oil of most restaurants. We ordered the duck nachos to share as an appetizer and it was excellent; savory chunks of duck and microgreens over fried wonton wrappers with a drizzled aioli. I was worried that I would be filled by the nachos, but they were delightfully light and flavorful. For entrees, I ordered the sea bass and butternut squash mash. I was a little concerned because the fish came out smelling a little fishy, but it didn't affect the flavor. The bass was cooked to a good consistency (not hard or rubbery) and the mash was smooth and buttery. The carrot broth and lime coconut broth with the diced brussel sprouts and the occasional chunk of Asian pear made for a nice pairing. The rest of my family was equally happy with their food, which included the duck bulgogi, hanger steak, and grilled chicken with a Vietnamese twist. I tried tidbits of all the meat, and each one was well seasoned and cooked to the right degree. My family tends to eat a lot, but even we were stuffed after our entrees, as they were quite generous. Because I had indicated on the OpenTable reservation that we were there for a special occasion, Zinc brought out a complimentary chocolate, peanut butter, and banana tart to share. Like the rest of the meal, we enjoyed it very much. At this point, we were about to burst! All in all, Zinc was the perfect restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. I had a very nice experience dining at Zinc on Wednesday evening. We had made a 7:00 p.m. reservation on Open Table and although were 20 minutes late, the hostesses sat us with no issue at all. When we sat down, the waitress came right over and greeted us and asked for our drink order. I found the service at Zinc to be exceptional. The manager (I assume that is who it was) was also running around making sure tables had what they needed. We ordered the Duck Nachos to start and my companion had the sea scallops in a bed of lobster chowder and I had the airline chicken (sans rice) with veggies. Everything we ordered was great! I really liked the complimentary flat bread that was brought to the table before our appetizer. All in all - we had a great meal. Service was spot-on and food was tasty. My only piece of feedback - I was surprised the chicken was $26, compared to the scallops/lobster which was $29. Just seemed a little high for chicken. read more

I've lived in New Haven for 8 years, and tried all there is to try food-wise, and this is my favorite restaurant in town. Every time I've ever been to Zinc, I've tried something different and have loved every dish that I've had. As a student, it's on the pricier side for me, but lunch here can be a pretty good deal depending on what you order. Food: 5/5 - I've had the pork chops, steak, smoked salmon sandwich, among others. Everything has been delicious and perfectly cooked. Service: 5/5 - it's the type of place where the staff folds your napkin when you go to the bathroom and consistently cleans your crumbs off the table. Ambience: 5/5 - it's upscale, not too loud, overall clean and appropriate decor. It's a bit small but not to the point of feeling cramped. A good happy hour can only be brought to you by a good bartender, and Shane Hobart at New Haven's Zinc is better than good. He's a craftsman when it comes to cocktails, he knows Zinc's menus inside and out, and he's more than glad to chat with you about every last ingredient. Some of the small plates offered at Zinc's happy hour have been on the menu for sixteen years, and for good reason. The Lettuce Wraps, featuring saigon-style braised beef, peanuts, mint, carrot, and an outstanding chile-garlic sauce, were out of this world, and my date (a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America) practically swooned over the perfect, jewel-like Salmon Gravlax. Prior to our small plates, we snacked on delicious corn and fennel bread with a yellow pepper and ginger sambal. Shane likes to mix in a little local into his drinks. I started with a refreshing Waterford Currant, made with Ashford, Connecticut-based Rime vodka, Lejay Cassis, lemon, and black currant juice, and I had to order a slightly indulgent Grand Ma's Sidecar--Grand Marnier, Lillet Blanc, and Wild Moon lavender liqueur from Hartford--after Shane offered us a taste. It was our first time to Zinc. We were travelling to a Spa in Norwich from Greenwich and stopped for dinner. We were seated at a perfect corner booth for two that provided a great view of tbe bar area. Our server was top notch. Cocktails were spot on. We ordered two appetizers and one entree to share. Came here with my mom and two of her Pilates customers for snacks and drinks last week. I've been here a few times before and it never disappoints! Please note that I have eaten here twice for nice corporate recruiting dinners and never had to pay nor do I know how much most things cost so I can't really speak to value. However, everything I've had here is delicious! The organic greens are fresh, the duck nachos are good (I like chipotle sauce a lot though). I also had the pork dumplings and was a bit disappointed (then again, I'm a huge dim sum/Asian food person so it's to be expected). I've had both the diver sea scallops and the seared scottish salmon as entrees and enjoyed both, though I enjoyed the salmon more. I think the scallops could have been more flavorful, but they were perfectly tender and juicy. There are so many good wine options and the truffles are also delightful, though very rich. The service was great and friendly, and they were good about making sure our water and wine glasses were always full. I really want to give Zinc a better review, and if I had just had the appetizers and dessert I would. But given the mediocre entrees, I just can't do it. First, the ambiance is fantastic. I love the lighting, the chic bar and comfortable white booth tables. There's plenty of seating but it doesn't feel crowded, the music is energetic but not too loud, and overall it's very relaxed and a good dining environment with youthful energy. That energy really came across with the beginning of our meal, which had interesting twists and flavor combinations. The corn bread with roasted yellow pepper dip reminded me of fried polenta, and while it didn't quite match the dip, it was still tasty and unique. It surprised me, which I think is really key for this kind of place. The smoked duck nachos, with lime sour cream, spicy aioli, and three kinds of onions (fried, red, and grilled perhaps?), were exciting and different and unique, even jarring at times. They made me excited to try new things, and really summed up the spirit of Zinc--taking things you love and adding some small twist, a deconstruction or a different ingredient, to make you really sit up and take notice of the food itself. These nachos are fantastic! That said, the hangar steak was actually plain, and came out medium-done rather than medium as I had asked. The waiter even specified "pink all the way through", while this steak was brown. Brown and unmarinated. It tasted like plain meat. Topped with blue cheese/truffle oil butter, which was tasty, but couldn't save the dish. Normal salad and standard sweet potato fries accompanied it. Simply not good. The squash agnoletti plate had a lot going on, but none of it was cohesive. This would be an understandable and forgivable mistake from a restaurant that wants to mix things up if the dish was flavorful in any way, but it wasn't. The slightly sweet, mostly creamy sauce was entirely forgettable, and the bleu cheese didn't complement the sweetness of the peas, spinach, raisins, or walnuts at all. So much potential with these fantastic fall ingredients, but ZInc just fell through. The cheese plate was delicious; I loved the purple haze lavender goat cheese, and the tilsit grew on me with the honey and cranberry confit. It came with a delicious, nutty bread which didn't really complement the cheeses (too much flavor on its own), but this was a forgivable and delicious decision. FInally, the pumpkin cheesecake served with pomegranate ice cream and pomegranate seeds was amazing! deconstructed creamy, rich cheesecake with a full pumpkin flavor worked perfectly with the cold, zesty and fresh ice cream, while the little pop! of pomegranate seeds in your mouth made it a perfect eating experience. I will return to Zinc, and I will update this review, and hopefully give it another one or two stars. read more

I came here again recently for their Restaurant Week Dinner and it was so amazing! Good thing I made a reservation because it was packed on Friday night. The vibe is business casual and I didn't realize that they do coat check which was kinda nice. The setting is romantic for a date too with the slightly dim lighting and candles on the tables. They seated us in the back portion of the restaurant and it was pretty quiet back there away from the bar, but in general the restaurant wasn't that noisy considering the full house. For the first course, my boyfriend and I tried the salmon gravlax and ricotta toast with butternut squash and sun dried tomato jam. The salmon gravlax was so fresh and the toast was incredible -the pairing of the squash and jam was on point. For the second course, we ordered the shrimp, creamy corn + hominy panang curry and the butternut squash ravioli. The curry was delicious and had a nice spicy kick to it, but we loved the butternut squash ravioli. The sauce had mushrooms and spinach and it was so creamy and rich -just thinking about it makes me want it again! For dessert, we got the pumpkin flan and the dark chocolate mousse cake. The presentation was so pretty and we loved the cake, but the flan tasted a little like pumpkin pie filling. It was still good, but not the best flan texture. In all, we had an incredibly delicious dinner and the portion sizes were perfect. 10/10 would recommend! read more

The atmosphere is really cool - darker, with smaller more intimate tables. I would love to come here for a date night sometime! We didn't get any apps, but drinks were strong and the wine list was extensive. We both ordered the hangar steak which was AMAZING. It had some sort of balsamic glaze and came w/ veggies and mashed potatoes. Literally ate the whole thing. Server was super friendly and attentive and had no problem throwing my mom's steak back on for a few more minutes when it came out a little undercooked for her (although cooked to her order). I was told they were booked up after standing behind a couple that was seated at the bar and given a choice of four seats right in front of me ! I have experienced this at other places. A New Haven staple! If you haven't been to zinc you're missing out. For lunch the Cobb Salad is the best in its class. I've never had one better than Chef Denise Appel's twist on this classic salad. Their flat bread and sambal offering is addicting. I could literally drink the sambal, it's that good. Everything on the menu is passionately crafted and delicious. They have an excellent wine program and it's the perfect spot for an event, meeting, or date. You can book reservations on Open Table ahead of time. It's walking distance from all that downtown has to offer, theater, cinema, night life and there is plenty of parking in the garage behind the restaurant. Trust me, it's addicting. read more

Officially love Matt!! So Zinc has always been one of our go-to's in New Haven. Definitely one of the best restaurants in the city but tonight was about service! We had a reservation at Zinc for my sister's birthday and the night was absolutely perfect. Food was amazing! Sommelier was wonderful and our waiter Matt WAS THE ABSOLUTE SWEETEST! Very disappointed. I planned a very special night dining out. Balloon burst first when I requested help from their Sommelier to pick a bottle of wine. The waiter went back to ask him and the waiter returned saying that the Sommelier wanted him to help us. There was only one other two top seated because it was early. I've eaten there two other times and the food preparations and choices have gone down hill over the years. This used to be a special place. My dinner was nothing special. Still great, slipping ever so slightly but still reliable and outstanding. Last night was first time back after a few months for business dinner; prices have gone up, which is concerning giving the tight competition among great restaurants in N'Hav. Tuna and fried spinach still out of this world. Dumplings amazing. Hostess, bar staff, water guy, all attentive and appropriately chill. Dunno what to say about waitress; everyone can have a bad day, but really. Her loathing of her job/life/us was palpable. read more

We visited during the restaurant week 2017. Service was excellent. Food was also amazingly delicious. This place made me feel like trying other fine dinning for this week. The meat was cooked well. Loved the dessert as well. The place was a bit too much noisy but I could still enjoy the atmosphere. Definitely wanna try again !! read more

This is a nice classy spot to bring someone you want to impress. I brought a candidate for my spot for lunch. He was a shoe-in, since he was an internal candidate, but more important, he's been in this area longer than me, so he was the one who suggested this place! The menu is interesting, and everything we had was delicious. Too bad it was a business lunch, so no booze. The service was a little slow, but otherwise attentive. Everything was clean and orderly, not a napkin out of place! They tout everything to be fresh and seasonal, and it shows. Wonderful supper at Zinc last night. Service was fantastic. The restaurant was not full... Maybe half. The cocktail menu is very creative, although they were out of St Germaine. (I wanted the cucumber cocktail) We ordered the beet salad and the Bibb salad with sirachi ranch. Both were just delicious. The special Thai style pulled pork was something else. It tasted amazing, but wasn't much to look at. The cod did not disappoint either! I enjoyed it. The restaurant is pleasant. I look forward to going back again. read more
