My family went to Zigu for Father's Day and were treated to a delicious tapas style meal that were so artfully curated and tasted as fresh as the servers claimed they'd be. They do offer an omakase option and sushi bar, as well as a variety of hot dishes, ramen and Japanese fusion bites. Our party of 6 shared about 8 dishes, and my favorite was the cold kale noodles! They are also known for an extensive sake menu, many of which are specifically curated from Japan and only available at the restaurant. Will definitely go back for bites and a sake tasting one of these days. It looks substantial because the fish is arranged on top, but the inside are all vegetables. At that price, I expected more than presentation The chilled soba was the best value at $9.90, and it was also one of the better dishes. Drinks were priced much more reasonably. A draft beer was only four dollars, which made the food pricing feel even harder to justify Service followed a similar pattern. It appeared attentive, but much of the attention felt directed toward upselling or prompting a larger tip. Our waiter offered to take a group photo about five times and brought over a shiny flickering light to place under our beer, apparently to make it resemble bottle service. It is a great place to celebrate birthdays (ring light photos, sparklers, flower candle, 10% off) where they made the experience so fun! Excellent Izakaya with the chef testing menu. We had the fresh sashimi plate, husband, and kids got the cut the Wagyu beef, and beef tenderloin tasting menu. We came here for our wedding anniversary dinner and went during happy hour. They make the food so fast! We got the edamame, pickled onion, mochiko chicken with smoked mayo, spicy salmon roll, blue fin tuna trio & A5 Wagyu & uni roll. And our server David was top tier! He showed us pictures of the specials which my husband is a big picture person so he loved that and David even had a light and offered to take our picture. David went above and beyond and even gave us hot tea at the end of the meal. His service is top notch! My only negative comment is the hostess. When we walked up she was on her phone and didn't even say hi or welcome. And then she asked if we wanted to sit at the bar and I asked if you had to sit at the bar to do happy hour and she said no, so I asked for a table and she tells us oh ok one moment. It's not often these days that you get a great restaurant experience with all the elements working in place. Zigu succeeds with amazing food, great service, and a cool vibe in its semi outdoor atmosphere with foliage under a tent. The place is extensive with a bar, indoor and lots of outdoor tables that can seat big and small groups . It was hopping on a Sunday night. Like its menu, the decor and feel of Zigu is rooted in traditional Japanese Izakaya but with a contemporary flair. Food and drinks are creative without overdoing it to create amazing flavors and textures. My favorites of the evening are marked with a *. *Aka Collins : shochu, shiso, strawberry, yuzu, bubbles -great balanced flavors with gentle notes of sweet and sour, beautifully presented with a giant leaf and an extra long ice "cube". We started with 3 different salads: *Local Farm Sweet potato salad-just as good if not better than I remembered. It's really a regular potato salad but sprinkled with thin crispy bits of purple sweet potato. The savory smoked mayo flavor that reminded me of bacon but not was ahmazing! *Sumida Farm Watercress Mini Salad with crispy soba noodles and tossed in a delicious light soy based dressing was refreshing and delish. *Local fresh cucumber salad- better than I expected, seasoned and cut just the right width for a nice crunch, also refreshing *Seared Salmon Belly Sushi ~served with 2 kinds of wasabi, pricey but delish ! *Cold Spicy Tantan Kale Noodle incredible taste and texture, the noodles cooked to perfection covered with a silky sesame sauce dressing that my cousin ate alone after the noodles were gone. Unlike the vegan version, this one came with braised beef on top. Zigu is a great spot for an early dinner. They open at 4pm and you can get a table right away if you're doing a walk in. Their food is mainly Japanese but they use local (Hawaii) ingredients when can. The portions are a reasonable size but it's meant for sharing with the table. My favorites are the ginger pork and the ahi poke. The watercress salad is a popular item and I've had it a few times but I'm not a fan of raw watercress and I prefer it in soup. The prices are high but the quality and the taste of their food is very good. The service from the staff is excellent and Candice, our waitress, checked on us often to make sure we were okay throughout the night. If you take pics of your food, the waiters all have a light so they'll shine it and you'll get amazing food pics. They are located in Waikiki, on Kuhio Ave and Seaside Ave. If you park at the Hyatt Centric (hotel), it's a short walk across the street. If you have a large group of 4 or more, I recommend making a reservation in advance on the opentable app; same day if fine. The restaurant gets busy between 6pm - 8pm. One of those last minute decision and turned out to be a gem. Zigu means eat local. Our server David made a huge difference. From outside, appears to be very small place. However, you are only seeing a small portion. Once you pass the bar, there is a huge covered courtyard with lots of seating. We didn't have a reservation and wanted to seat where it was cooler. Zigu has been in my Yelp list to try for ages but let's be honest, it takes a lot to get locals into Waikiki willingly. I finally made it here last week, probably because I no longer live in Hawaii and am now working a lot harder to get through those bookmarks! Located in a historic building (house?) on Seaside Avenue, Zigu is an open air and outdoor establishment. I didn't actually know this when I made a reservation or else I might have been scared away (many locals also like ac lol.) Anyway, it turned out to be just fine outside as they've got fans mounted on the overhead tent as well as a giant ac funneling cool air onto the patio. It was comfortable on the lanai even if it was sweltering everywhere else in town. There were a LOT of choices -- a drink menu, the regular menu, a special Okinawan menu for September, plus a Happy Hour menu if you're there from 4-6pm. Prices are good but know that portion sizes vary widely. Our server did know the menu very well so just ask for tips. Food hit the table very quickly even though the place was about 1/2 full. Food was beautiful. Seasonings seemed a little on the sweet side but that could just be me and my love of salt. We ate the ahi katsu with a ginormous kale salad and big dollop of egg tartar, sweet potato salad, cucumber pickles, the two half-sized HH sushi rolls (salmon and spicy tuna) and all were good... and sweet. Our favorite was the chicken karaage. Next time we might go for the teishoku instead as those looked pretty solid. Sake flights and chuhi drinks were a great deal too. I really, really wanted to like Zigu after seeing so many amazing videos on social and photos/reviews on Yelp. Unfortunately, our visit fell well below expectations. We happened to come during happy hour, so we got a bunch of happy hour items. While the price seems attractive at first (ex: $5 appetizers), portion sizes are really small. Also, their tuna and salmon rolls are "half price" during happy hour but they're also half the size of the normal rolls...so they're actually full price. This didn't feel in keeping with the spirit of happy hour. And $14 for 4 small roll pieces is very expensive. We also ordered the special Okinawan soba. It took a ridiculous amount of time to arrive, and we noticed other tables seated after us got their food first. When the soba finally arrived, it was so salty that it was essentially inedible without squeezing lemon onto it. Lastly, we noticed other tables that ordered this dish received a whole presentation at their table when the food arrived, complete with a light show and everything (it was so bright that it caught our eyes). However, when ours arrived, it was just placed down without any of the pomp and circumstance. We also ordered cold soba, which also took an inordinate amount of time to arrive. When it did, there was a giant clump of noodles that was difficult and off-putting to eat. Our server sold us pretty hard on Zigu's sushi, and we ultimately ordered one salmon and one hamachi nigiri. These nigiris were incredibly expensive at $7 PER PIECE, and they were average at best. Service was hit-or-miss. We didn't really appreciate the hard sell on sushi, and when we flagged a different staff member down with a basic question, she was completely unfamiliar with the menu and needed to call someone else over to help. Also, flies swarmed our table at one point, yet later, we saw another table was offered a spinning fan to deter flies but we never were. Top notch service and very tasty food + cocktails! I came by here for my 29th birthday and it didn't disappoint. Our server, Garrett, took amazing care of us. He explained to us the menu plus some of his personal recommendations. Moreover, he even helped us take nice photos by setting up lighting for us because it was dark outside when we were having dinner. I had the spicy chilled soba and that was definitely what I needed at that moment in time. The cool soba paired with a good spicy kick really elevated the whole tasting experience especially while the weather was a little on the warmer side that day. Amongst my friends and I, we had an opportunity to try out some of their signature cocktails which were all super tasty but unfortunately we came too late to try some of their beers. Loved everything about Zigu! We came with our family, excited to try the Chilled Kale Noodles--which did not disappoint. We sat outside on the patio and immediately enjoyed the chill, tropical vibe. When Garrett arrived at our table, we knew this was the spot. Garrett shared a little background on Zigu and highlighted several special menu items, including the A5 wagyu. We bit the bullet and ordered it, and it was worth every penny. While the food overall was excellent, Garrett was truly the highlight of our experience. He was attentive, engaging, and incredibly kind--especially in expressing his gratitude for our dad's military service. Our dad was born and raised in Hawaii, so we wanted this trip "home" to be especially meaningful for him, and Garrett's Aloha spirit helped make that happen. A couple of nights later, my husband and I returned to Zigu for our final meal before flying back to LA.
