    Fried ahi

Food was delicious and came out super fast! We ordered the soba noodles, fried ahi, eggplant, and toro nigiri. All the meat was super high quality and tender. It is izakaya style so on the more expensive style but portions were great and the food quality and presentation makes it worth it! Our server David was almost amazing (give him a raise :P)

We came here for our wedding anniversary dinner and went during happy hour. They make the food so fast! We got the edamame, pickled onion, mochiko chicken with smoked mayo, spicy salmon roll, blue fin tuna trio & A5 Wagyu & uni roll. We didn't read the menu and the spicy salmon roll had Mac nuts and cilantro which I did not care for. Also for the rolls they are on top of the roll not inside. But everything was delicious. And our server David was top tier! He showed us pictures of the specials which my husband is a big picture person so he loved that and David even had a light and offered to take our picture. David went above and beyond and even gave us hot tea at the end of the meal. His service is top notch! My only negative comment is the hostess. When we walked up she was on her phone and didn't even say hi or welcome. And then she asked if we wanted to sit at the bar and I asked if you had to sit at the bar to do happy hour and she said no, so I asked for a table and she tells us oh ok one moment. And then when we left she didn't say bye or have a good night, but a different server did. Then I forgot to get validation and I said sorry I forgot to ask for validation and she goes "I'm sorry?" And so I asked her again if I could get validation. Maybe you shouldn't be a hostess if you're gonna be so rude.

Unfortunately I did not enjoy the food here! We came in for happy hour and I was very disappointed. Sadly the roll was fishy, the chicken was bland, the cucumber salad really had no taste to it, fries were under seasoned, and drinks were just okay. The best thing here are the pickled onions I ate them all! I was sad because this place really looked like it was going to be a hit! I would definitely skip this and go somewhere else, sad to have wasted one of our nights staying in Hawaii on a sad underwhelming meal.

Zigu is a great spot for an early dinner. They open at 4pm and you can get a table right away if you're doing a walk in. Their food is mainly Japanese but they use local (Hawaii) ingredients when can. The portions are a reasonable size but it's meant for sharing with the table. My favorites are the ginger pork and the ahi poke. The watercress salad is a popular item and I've had it a few times but I'm not a fan of raw watercress and I prefer it in soup. The prices are high but the quality and the taste of their food is very good. The service from the staff is excellent and Candice, our waitress, checked on us often to make sure we were okay throughout the night. If you take pics of your food, the waiters all have a light so they'll shine it and you'll get amazing food pics. They are located in Waikiki, on Kuhio Ave and Seaside Ave. If you park at the Hyatt Centric (hotel), it's a short walk across the street. If you have a large group of 4 or more, I recommend making a reservation in advance on the opentable app; same day if fine. The restaurant gets busy between 6pm - 8pm. I had the patio seating which was spacious and there was a breeze.

It's not often these days that you get a great restaurant experience with all the elements working in place. Zigu succeeds with amazing food, great service, and a cool vibe in its semi outdoor atmosphere with foliage under a tent. The place is extensive with a bar, indoor and lots of outdoor tables that can seat big and small groups . It was hopping on a Sunday night. Like its menu, the decor and feel of Zigu is rooted in traditional Japanese Izakaya but with a contemporary flair. Food and drinks are creative without overdoing it to create amazing flavors and textures. My favorites of the evening are marked with a *. *Aka Collins : shochu, shiso, strawberry, yuzu, bubbles -great balanced flavors with gentle notes of sweet and sour, beautifully presented with a giant leaf and an extra long ice "cube". We started with 3 different salads: *Local Farm Sweet potato salad-just as good if not better than I remembered. It's really a regular potato salad but sprinkled with thin crispy bits of purple sweet potato. The savory smoked mayo flavor that reminded me of bacon but not was ahmazing! *Sumida Farm Watercress Mini Salad with crispy soba noodles and tossed in a delicious light soy based dressing was refreshing and delish. *Local fresh cucumber salad- better than I expected, seasoned and cut just the right width for a nice crunch, also refreshing *Seared Salmon Belly Sushi ~served with 2 kinds of wasabi, pricey but delish ! *Cold Spicy Tantan Kale Noodle incredible taste and texture, the noodles cooked to perfection covered with a silky sesame sauce dressing that my cousin ate alone after the noodles were gone. Unlike the vegan version, this one came with braised beef on top. Local Vegetable Tempura - good, fresh ingredients but not unique or creative like the other dishes Mapo Eggplant - eggplant was soft and covered with a dark sauce, mixed with a few chunks of pork that came with a bit too much fat for my liking. For my birthday they gave a scoop of vanilla ice cream served with a flaming sparkler, a shot of sake, and a song. So fun and different !! Can't wait to come back and revisit my faves as well as try the soba noodle dish we eyed on the next table.

We went for happy hour, which has a pretty limited menu. I would love to see more options on there. I liked the smoked mayo that came with the mochiko chicken, but without it the chicken was a bit bland. I enjoyed the mini tuna roll. Service was good and accommodating. I was most impressed by presentation. Beautiful servingware and real chopsticks! Attention to those types of details can really elevate the dining experience. FYI: They do offer kama'aina discount on non-happy hour items.

It was our first time here with family. We were running a little late due to traffic, but they were understanding and seated our party of 10! Our server was great at explaining about Zigu restaurant and their food. When they began to bring our orders to the table, one of the staff members accidentally dropped the soba sauce dish onto the table and it spilled on my leg! She was very apologetic, helped me clean up, and replaced the sauce that was spilled. My soba noodles were good, but I was still hungry, so we ordered more food! When we were all done, the servers came back to take a group picture of everyone, that was fun!

We came for happy hour and the had great food and drink special. We sat at the bar. Bartender was friendly and attentive. The food was very good. We had mochiko chicken, cucumber roll, sashimi, edamame, soba noodles, mai Thai and a beer. Plenty of space inside and out. It got super busy as the night progressed. Definitely would come back here.

Parking: they validate parking for the Hyatt centric lot nearby Service: great, our server had great recommendations, told us a few funny stories, and made for a great night Ambiance: cozy, warm, great for a date night or nice dinner Food: all good choices, love their use of local ingredients in all their dishes. make sure to ask for their specials! we were able to get a great steak

One of those last minute decision and turned out to be a gem. Zigu means eat local. Our server David made a huge difference. From outside, appears to be very small place. However, you are only seeing a small portion. Once you pass the bar, there is a huge covered courtyard with lots of seating. We didn't have a reservation and wanted to seat where it was cooler. We were seated by the kitchen/bar area and were quite happy. Ordered several small plates to share and local sake flights per David's recommendation. All tured out great and bummed out that we will have to wait till next time.

    Chilled spicy soba
    Peter L.

3 years later we are back, thankfully the food is still some if my fav in HNL. Spicy chilled soba was refreshing, el dente & delish. Luve the mixture of textures & flavors, a bit salty/sweet/sour/spicy, reminds me of the mazesoba on Japan. Sweey potato salad was airy, delish & heavenly; Seared ahi cutlet katsu melts in the mouth, seated salmon belly was sublime.

Zigu has been in my Yelp list to try for ages but let's be honest, it takes a lot to get locals into Waikiki willingly. I finally made it here last week, probably because I no longer live in Hawaii and am now working a lot harder to get through those bookmarks! Located in a historic building (house?) on Seaside Avenue, Zigu is an open air and outdoor establishment. I didn't actually know this when I made a reservation or else I might have been scared away (many locals also like ac lol.) Anyway, it turned out to be just fine outside as they've got fans mounted on the overhead tent as well as a giant ac funneling cool air onto the patio. It was comfortable on the lanai even if it was sweltering everywhere else in town. There were a LOT of choices -- a drink menu, the regular menu, a special Okinawan menu for September, plus a Happy Hour menu if you're there from 4-6pm. Prices are good but know that portion sizes vary widely. Our server did know the menu very well so just ask for tips. Food hit the table very quickly even though the place was about 1/2 full. Food was beautiful. Seasonings seemed a little on the sweet side but that could just be me and my love of salt. We ate the ahi katsu with a ginormous kale salad and big dollop of egg tartar, sweet potato salad, cucumber pickles, the two half-sized HH sushi rolls (salmon and spicy tuna) and all were good... and sweet. Our favorite was the chicken karaage. Next time we might go for the teishoku instead as those looked pretty solid. Sake flights and chuhi drinks were a great deal too. Our meal was really inexpensive so +1 star for that!

Zigu is such a Waikiki gem! The fish is incredibly fresh, everything comes out fast, and the flavors are on point. Our waiter, David, was hilarious and even helped us get the best food pics with his special lighting setup (seriously, mvp)! We ordered edamame, miso soup, a mix of nigiri, and a few of their daily specials - all of which were amazing! My mouth is drooling thinking about how the fish literally melted in our mouths. They're super accommodating with food allergies, and the vibe is great whether you sit indoors or out. Warning you'll leave already planning your next visit!

They have shared parking lot with the surrounding establishments which was fairly open since it was so late (I think they were the only one open by that time). We were able to get seated fairly quickly (bar seating style, not individual tables, although they have a few of those as well). This spot is decently small but they seem to fit everyone in fairly efficiently. Upon seating we were given menus and waters after. The waiters are decently attentive since we were seated right by their kitchen/back of house opening. We got: * Chicken Karaage: 10/10, I would heavily recommend this. The chicken was juicy and lightly crispy. What MADE this dish was actually the egg sauce on top. It acts as the aioli but clearly much more homemade and heathier, with egg white pieces and the sauce made of egg yolk etc. We ordered this twice bc it smacked. * Taco Rice: 7/10, okay so... I'm not even going to lie when I say that I was a bit tipsy already when I agreed on ordering this. I THOUGHT this was a TAKO (octopus) rice. NOT a TACO (Mexican) rice. It tasted like I was eating taco bell, which wasn't bad per se but just felt weird being in an izakaya. * Beef Tongue: 9/10. I would recommend this as well. The beef tongue was tender and flavorful. They didn't go overboard with the sauce on top to let the meat shine through. * Seared Aburi: 8/10. The person I was with order it. It was good, no strong feelings about it. It was cool to watch them sear it though. It was on the fishy-er side tho, compared to other forms of sashimi (likely due to the skin still present). * Hot Sake: I would recommend this if you don't enjoy drinking. While its hot/warm, it helps it go down a lot more! Honestly I enjoyed the fried chicken so much I would actually come back just to eat that and maybe try some of their other dishes. Plus the izakaya experience definitely felt really authentic as it was bustling when we visited.

The kitchen is clearly talented. But everything else? A real disappointment. The server was cold and unfriendly the entire visit. The larger tables of four around us were getting great, attentive service -- smiles, check-ins, the works. But when she dropped food at our table? Not even a word. It felt pretty obvious that since the bigger tables had an automatic 20% tip guaranteed, our table just wasn't worth the effort to her. And that's exactly the problem with sneaking an auto-gratuity in fine print at the bottom of the menu -- it creates exactly this kind of situation. If the service had been genuinely good, I would have happily tipped 20% on my own. But to have it quietly tacked on after being largely ignored? That feels sneaky and disrespectful. This place used to be a go-to for me. Today really dropped the ball. Be upfront about the tip policy and treat every table like it matters -- because to the customer, it always does.

We also love the hamachi carpaccio with a wonderful balance of flavors. It's so ono we snagged two pieces before remembering to take a picture. He's added some great hand rolls to the menu, the Hideyoshi and Negitoro Ikura. For now his Happy Hour specials are all night Tues, Wed, Thurs, and Sunday 6pm-midnight and Fri/Sat 10pm-12am. Come soon to catch these great deals, you won't regret it! We love that you can order off the bar menu too, which has awesome burgers, pupus, and other bar grub at great prices. Our kids love the free, old-school arcade games. The drinks are solid, unique, and reasonably priced with $3 drafts and well drinks for happy hour. Chef Hideyoshi believes in only using the highest quality ingredients. If you appreciate supporting our local food scene, please take the time to check out Izakaya Hideyoshi.

It was so sad this business is closing down by Oct 31st. With rising food costs, inflation and…read morestaffing, it's understandable but I wish best endeavors for Chef Jason Peel and his staff. My fiance won a gift card actually 2 of them (from his coworker whom could not get a reservation secured), we knew we had to make the trip over before they officially close. We had multiple dishes, but staff made Kauai prawns and tomato miso black cod dishes on the house since they ran out the Hokkaido scallops. We ordered the short ribs, lobster appetizer, hamachi crudo and lastly sashimi moriawase to finish food palate. Lukki lemon dessert was great way to end to night. Ordered the Milk tea bouquet cocktail while my better half had water ( either way the food coma knock him out cold the rest of the night lol). To be honest, it was difficult to determine which dish was the best because the staff kept quality there despite it being busy every night since they announce the closure. Sashimi moriawase, fish was so fresh, reminded me of my time spent in Hokkaido and Sapporo. Short ribs was soft and rich in flavor. Both me and my fiance liked the lukki lemon dessert, like lemon meringue pie but broken down version. If you have a chance to dine here before closing and got a reservation, definitely will have a lovely dining experience and your stomach will be full by end of the night.

The staff were friendly and very helpful with giving us recommendations. We ordered 3 appetizers and 2 entrees, and honestly it was too much food for us. We had leftovers for breakfast the next day! - For appetizers we got: Ulu Tots, Japanese Eggplant, and Corn Beignets. The Corn Beignets was the best. - For entree we got: Tomato Miso Black Cod and the Short Rib. Both were delicious and worth a try. Sad to see that this restaurant appears to be closing.
