Scallion Pancake
Jeff K.

One of the best vegan spots in MA and even Thai, can't wait to have again. Had: Scallion pancake (one of my favorites I've had) Malaysian curry stew (very good) Pad-Thai (clean, no sodium overload, big portion) Soy Ice Cream Vanilla (great)

Tofu Delight, Scallion Pancake

Delicious vegan chinese food! I had the tofu delight and scallion pancakes from here at a catered event. The tofu delight was so good that I was actually worried they used beef broth in the sauce before learning the restaurant was all vegan. Scallion pancakes were wonderfully crispy as well. Highly recommend!

Thai Iced Tea

So I stopped in on a Wednesday, about 1:30/2pm or so and the restaurant was empty. (Another party came in a little after I did, but I nearly had the whole restaurant to myself. The weekday lunch special is a pretty decent value for $12, a main, miso soup, a spring roll, and all but the two noodle options also come with brown rice. The Thai Tea was tasty (and I didn't even think I liked Thai Tea much) but a smidge expensive. I will acknowledge that that could be because of the fact that we're still in a plague and the cost of ingredients could have gone up. Maybe that's not the normal, I don't actually know. I eat pretty much everything, so in no way am I a connoisseur of vegan food, but I left the restaurant pleased with my choices and a full belly. What more can you ask for?

Steamed dumplings

The food here is very very good. We ordered a ton of appetizers and entrees and really enjoyed all of it! So nice to have a good variety of vegan options like this.

Streamed veggie dumplings (green at left), chocolate cake up front, and scallion pancake to the right of the mug

tl;dr - Five stars on savory stuff alone; minus one on dessert After a full day of travel back home to Greater Boston (Medford, this time around) on no less than two busses, one Lyft, a plane, another bus, the Red Line, and one MORE bus, a delivery involving my favorite things (in general, SAVORY PANCAKE AND DUMPLING THINS OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER, plus cake) was precisely what I needed when I finally crashed at the Airbnb. I'd have gone my old Meju/Jae's route for a kimchi scallion pancake if they had not closed (nooooooo!), so I looked around for something similar and found Zhu. I must say, what a lovely scallion pancake this was! Quite a crisp-chew combination, and just the right flavor and salt balance. I think I liked Meju's less-stretchy texture a little better, but this one was excellent in its own right. The steamed veggie dumplings were simple, tender, and very good as well. I loved their sweet, bright sauce, though I might add some soy or other umami touch to really make it stand out. Finally, the requirement: some cake! The chocolate cake was....eh, just fine, I suppose. To Zhu's credit, vegan baking is hard, and except for the almost stiff-jelly twinge of texture from whatever the subbed for egg behavior, it was almost there. I think instead of mousse (which was likewise okay but would be AMAZING with more salt and fat) inside and out, they should do a richer frosting for the top! Otherwise, though, I happily ate the whole thing (I was really happy with its generous size, too) and would probably have eaten another if it was in front of me.

BBQ Seitan and Cold Noodles
Katie G.

Wanted to try something completely new, so, being a complete omnivore, what better choice than a vegan restaurant. I tried the BBQ seitan (as I'd never tried that meat substitute before) and while the sauce was a bit too sweet for me, the protein itself was pretty good. Definitely couldn't replace beef for me, but I enjoyed it. The highlight for me, though, were the cold noodles. I've had cold noodle dishes before, but none in the way this was prepared. The green tea noodles themselves were beautifully understated, and the sesame and peanut sauce was plain addicting. I also really appreciated the addition of lettuce (on the bottom of the plate) for some needed crunch. It may be one of my favorite noodle dishes right now, and I can't wait to go back to get it again. Additionally, the service was great. This restaurant is also a block away from a stop on the 77 bus, so there's really no excuse not to try this place out if you live in the area, even if you're not vegan.

No spice was specified for one entree so they applied that to both entries. Scallion pancakes are soggy and tasteless

I was hesitant at first to try this place since I'm a meat lover but the food was actually quite tasty and well flavored.

The service could use some attention, but the food and atmosphere are outstanding. Best hot sour soup in the Boston area.

If you have ever had a veggie burger and didn't like it, it was because you didn't eat here…read more To be honest there aren't a lot of vegetarian dishes that taste good for me, but everything they have here has been amazing. I say this because I have been here multiple times and everything I order or the people who are with me order, has always been amazing. Sometimes they have outdoor seating and we always sit outside if seating there is available, but this time they hadn't setup the outside yet, but they had plenty of seating for 2 inside. Another thing I mention on all my reviews is if a restaurant serves you water when you sit without asking. Well here they do and they were following our glasses as we were sitting. This is definitely a place to go to even if you aren't vegetarian.. actually especially if you aren't so you can find out how good some vegetarian dishes can be. The only downside for me is that I don't live in Cambridge or near by, but there are plenty of cheap parking garages near the restaurant and my favorite Korean grocery store is there.

I came to Veggie Galaxy with some friends and family while visiting Boston…read more It's a pretty cool space -- old school diner aesthetic in everything from decor to the menus. The service was good, but it did take a bit to get seated and get our food as we were a large group. There was also a miscommunication for some people in our group as the kitchen ran out of some things and only told them after they ordered and were waiting. I ordered the grilled chicken Rasta pasta (which was a special for the week). My sister ordered some soup. Both were delicious. The portions are GIGANTIC so I would maybe order something smaller next time, but man that pasta was delicious. The "chicken" was perfectly fried, and the pasta was well seasoned. I would maybe add a bit of heat by it that's a small complaint. I love this place, and will be back next time I'm in Boston!

Not sure what all the hype is about for this place! We ordered Thai fried rice, green curry and…read morefish cakes. Fish cakes were small and perfectly uniform - almost like they were frozen rather than prepared on site. Green curry had some spice but was mostly one note, there just wasn't much depth of flavor. Vegetables were all cut in huge hunks - both dishes had giant pieces of red bell peppers and onions. Fried rice was pretty bland and barely had any Chinese broccoli in it. Ambiance was bare bones - you order at the counter and they bring you your food and plastic side plates. Half the tables were stacked with boxes and bags of takeout orders. To top it off there's no bathroom, we were told to use the bathroom at another local business. If I'm gonna spend $60 somewhere, I expect to be able to wash my hands before eating and use the restroom. Perhaps there are some specialty dishes that we didn't try but this was my 2nd time ordering from here (I got take out once before) and both times the food was pretty bland. A truly underwhelming experience - especially when there are so many better restaurants in the area.

I really love biking and always pass by Kickstand on my journeys down the minuteman. I knew that I…read morehad to come visit one day just for Kickstand and I finally was able to do it when the crowd died down for the colder months. Unfortunately, I don't think it was worth the hype. I think great concept, but execution wasn't quite there. And maybe I just got unlikely with the item I ordered. I got the breakfast wrap which was an assortment of roasted veggies (think squash, broccoli, eggs) in the wrap. This was certainly unorthodox, but I wasn't opposed to it. I didn't really read much into it so I kind of was expecting a breakfast burrito, but got a pleasant surprise since I do like roasted veggies as well. The problem is that there was not much flavor to it and it left a lot to be desired. I think they could have done a lot more with it. Despite being underwhelmed, I will probably come here again and try something else. I just can't when their spot on the minute man is perfect and they are willing to push the envelope on breakfast wraps. So I'm hoping to up this rating one day!
