Zero's Subs

It's a little curmudgeonly of me, but I didn't want this place to be as good as it actually is. I…read moredo work around this area and had been curious about Yorkie's for a while; about a month ago I had the opportunity to stop in. It's kind of like Taste in that it's like a Hip And Trendy Sandwich Spot - the staff is mostly perky, cool, and very competent college students - and the prices are about on par with Taste as well, but for what you get here, it's probably double the value of what you can get there. I got their tuna melt, which stuck with me for long enough that it had me craving another sandwich like that when I was in the area again. So today I was in the area again and I brought a friend, who also got the tuna melt and loved it. The thing about that sandwich is that they probably put about a half pound of bluefin tuna salad on it, and it's not mayo or filler-heavy. It's very tuna-forward, which is a plus to me. This time I got the Kevin's Bday, which was turkey, bacon, cheese, LT with this amazing garlicky green onion aioli, because honestly I was like, "Well, the tuna melt was really good. But what about just a Normal Ass Sandwich??" Both those sandwiches come on thick toasted (I think potato?) sandwich bread and my god it was all SO delicious. Again, the portion was enough for two meals, and it was just a turkey sandwich! The turkey was super succulent too. One small detail i really appreciated was that I believe they cut their tomatoes on the slicer as well; they're incredibly thin, and they add a lot to the sandwich without overpowering it. Also their tots are unreal. Sorry for rambling. I'm very passionate about sandwiches apparently. All I'm saying is that if you're at the oceanfront and you're trying to pick a sandwich place, it should be this one.

I saw Yorkie's advertise their Wednesday "Girl Lunch" special and immediately knew I had to try it…read morebecause it combines some of my favorite things: tots, Caesar salad, and a fried chicken cutlet. It was definitely busy during the lunch rush, but worth the wait. The dish was so good! The lemon zest really brightened everything up and kept it from feeling too heavy despite the Caesar dressing, tots, and fried chicken. It added a depth of flavor I wasn't expecting and absolutely loved. At $18 (+ an additional $2 for a can of diet coke), it's a little pricey IMHO, but I'd order it again without hesitation because it's that good. Yorkie's is such a cute spot, the staff was friendly, and while parking can be a bit sparse around lunchtime, it's worth it. I'm already looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu!

The roast beef special was a great bargain (You pay more at McD's for junk food.) and the soda fountain offered an interesting variety of choices. There is a nice patio but I ate inside where the noise level was too high for my liking. I am not sure if I'd call this the "Good Life" but then again I didn't purchase any wine from their selection. It's the perfect combination of sweet, tangy, and open gooey deliciousness! Today, Baker's Crust catered breakfast at my office, and I was excited to see a table overflowing with bagels and cream cheeses. It was like Christmas morning for carb lovers! Unfortunately, none of the bagels or cream cheeses were labeled. My excitement quickly turned into confusion when I took a big bite of what I was sure was my beloved strawberry cream cheese... only to discover it was definitely not strawberry. And let's just say an onion bagel paired with the wrong cream cheese is a combination I wouldn't recommend. The food itself was great, but a little labeling would go a long way. A simple sticker or note on the bottom of each cream cheese container and small tent cards identifying the bagel flavors would save future customers from accidental flavor roulette. Still a fan, but next time I'd like to know whether I'm biting into strawberry bliss or an unexpected onion surprise! For a side note it's so easy to order online for a quick stop on the way to work. Perfect every time!!!

I don't want to have to think nor be confused. I want SERVICE and facing screens on a wall (two of which didn't work properly btw) is not providing service to customers especially with a group of young men on the other side of the glass wall any one of whom could have taken our orders. Sticker shock slammed me when I saw the price of a 12 ounce black coffee... it was almost the same cost as my bagel with cream cheese. Speaking of my premium highly priced black coffee ... it tastes as if there was sweetener of some sort added in ... oh well. When picking up my order to eat in ... I repeated that I was eating in ... the young man said "let me put it in a bag for you. ' I am eating in ... don't need a bag for my bagel ... take a dime off my coffee price and save the bag. The raison d'etre for this visit ... a bagel with veggie cream cheese... well it was a very good bagel with crunch and a decent schmear of veggie cream cheese. The bagel shop itself has a huge empty except for me dining area with lots of room to work if you choose to do so but I'd pick a place with reasonably priced coffee that includes refills if I was working. Sugar in my coffee uh no ... having to order off a tablet on the wall ... no ... a good reasonably priced bagel yes... maybe call in an order for bagels and get your coffee elsewhere or better yet find a nice diner with a waitress who comes to your table. And, this starts my VA BEACH Friday ... blah ... I really don't like sweetness in my coffee and hate over paying for coffee too. Oh I am taking that bag with ... a small white paper bag just might come in handy and after all he insisted that my eat in bagel needed to be that very special bag.

But after 50 minutes had passed, I finally had to go up and ask about my order. When I finally got my food, it was clear things were not handled well. The fries were made immediately and left sitting in a closed Styrofoam container the entire time my sub was cooking. By the time I received them, they were a soggy, wet pile of fries with zero crisp left. As for the sub itself, it was about 90% bread and maybe 10% actual filling. It took three hard, crusty bites before I even reached any meat--and when I did, the flavor was disappointing and lackluster. Definitely not what I expected from a place known for subs. Their "Italian dressing" is really just a ton of oil with a tiny splash of vinegar. They should just call it what it is instead of something misleading. To top it off, I had to ask someone to wipe the table before sitting because it wasn't cleaned. Overall, this visit was a miss from start to finish. Long wait, soggy fries, a flavorless sub, and unclear menu descriptions. I really hope they improve consistency and quality, because my experience did not match the reputation they seem to have
