Chinese tapas for dinner! Salt & pepper squid (top L), fried lamb (top R), fried soft shell crab (center); lamb in lettuce leaf (bottom)

Of the 3 restaurants hosted by the LHR T4 Hilton, this one is the best of the bunch. Well executed, refined Chinese cuisine - definitely not your typical fried rice/lo mein oil and soy sauce-laden fare. And thank goodness! There's plenty of that sort around, so why settle for it on your last night in the UK before heading overseas? Zen's menu is large and mouth-watering, and great to share family-style if you're among family, friends, or colleagues. But I've dined here many times alone and learned that the best way to enjoy Zen is to partake of its extensive appetizers and have a dim sum or tapas-like meal. Trust me - go with a selection of their terrific apps over entrees. This visit I had: salt & pepper squid (lightly battered, tender, with that great zing of salt and pepperiness, plus a delicious burn from the hot peppers); fried slivers of lamb with do-it-yourself lettuce leaf wraps (add mint leaf and hoisin) which tasted like a crisp non-fatty roast duck; a small assortment of dim sum (shu mai and har gow); pan-fried pork/vegetable dumplings (nicely browned and juicy inside); and the best of all, a whole fried soft shell crab, with a friable shattering light batter on the outside, juicy and soft on the inside, full of fresh crab flavor. (I was unaccountably pleased to confirm with the maitre d' that it was indeed blue crab, imported from Maryland in the good ole US of A!). On a sad note, my favorite appetizer, the steamed diver scallops was discontinued even though it's still listed on the menu. However, the crab made up for this loss big time. Overall, superbly executed food and a refined dining experience. Service was prompt and polite, although it can be a little on the reserved side.

By far the best Asian restaurant I've eaten at. Quality and flavors were fresh and amazing. Their customer service was top notch. Highly recommend when you are in LHR - stop here!

Extremely spicy hot and sour soup non appetizing

Besides the extremely spicy hot soup "hot and sour" , overly priced, extremely salty and unflavored food nothing else to comment or spend time on this review. Truly a waist of money, half of craft of white wine and 4 appetizers 110 pounds, which equals to $176.

A surprising but likable place hidden within the lobby of the Heathrow Terminal 4 Hilton Hotel. Having stayed here a number of times on layover travel, I had seen it in the past a few years ago and my thoughts every time I pass it on layover are that it has to either be a traveler's tourist trap (who else would be going to a Chinese restaurant buried in the lobby of an airport hotel?), on the verge of going out of business (always looked empty and was hard to imagine enough demand given its location), or a front for some type of shady activity (It is here every time I pass through despite the above parentheticals and I know how crafty Asians can be!). My curiosity finally got the best of me last evening and I had to have a go at trying it since it has seemingly stood the test of time. My first discovery was that this place boasts sister restaurants in other locations, specifically in Hong Kong and they proudly display that they are recommended by the Guide Michelin for those of you that follow that holy document. My next discovery was that from the front entrance, the restaurant is sunken and back beyond any of the windows which explains why every time I had walked by it in the past, it looked completely forlorn and empty. This was a big reason I never went in to try it in the past. I figured it really can't be great if no one is in the place. What I found was that it really only has about 15 tables (a few that can seat parties of 6-8) but the dining area is quite small and I was most surprised to find the place 3/4 full and quite lively with many diners from single travelers such as myself all the way up to large parties of business associates celebrating a successful day. My 3rd discovery upon entering was that this felt like a finer dining spot than its location would suggest. There were a lot of waitstaff, probably on the order of 1 waitron per 2 tables and all dressed in black tie serving attire. They poured my tea for me and kept removing unneeded serving ware or dirty dishes. There were white tablecloths present and ceramic chopstick rests and a medium sized wine list was presented to me upon sitting. Ok, now my interest was piqued and I felt really underdressed in a t-shirt and jeans but I was welcomed nonetheless and treated very warmly by the staff. Those of you that follow me know that I'm a lush for good food and seek out street food and hole in the wall joints as well as higher end spots. But it is, in my experience, uncommon to have a wine list (with some nice selections and many in half bottle format) presented to you at Chinese restaurants except in the more high end places and this definitely describes this place. Who knew?!? Since my vanity and curiosity were more than satisfied, I decided to concentrate on the food. The menu was not cheap but it had some really nice items such as real Peking Duck (the guy next to me ordered it and it looked great and included table service of deboning and serving with standard accompaniments), whole steamed fish, dim sum basket starters, and steamed soya chicken. I decided on some dim sum and a small whole fish and really could find no fault with the food. It was excellent if not on the pricey side (I rationalized this by the fact that I'm receiving some really authentic and high end Chinese food while being held captive at an airport hotel restaurant). Definitely worth it when you are lonely, stuck in the hotel, and fortunate enough to be on an expense account. Even if you aren't staying in the hotel but have a longer layover at Heathrow, it might be worth coming here for a meal just to break up the time. I give this a solid 4 stars for being such a surprising and authentic find within this hotel. Definitely will eat here again when given the chance.

Been coming here for a decade - honestly I travel globally all the time, the service here is 5 star and so is the food ... enjoy friends!

Great food and great service. Get the crispy duck for a perfect dinner when stuck overnight at Heathrow Hilton.
