Decent dim sum in London's Chinatown. We popped in after hitting a couple pubs in Soho and need a bite so we could continue the crawl. We were seated promptly but it took a awhile for our order to be taken. We opted for the pork buns, shrimp and chive dumplings, pork dumplings, fried squid and pork puff pastry. We enjoyed all of the and ended up getting a second order of pork dumplings. The food took a good amount of time to arrive. We both had a kiwi cider from Australia which was great. Would have rated 4 stars as the food was good, it was just that the service was so slow. read more

Place wasn't bad. Compared to places back home in USA, the portions seemed smaller for food like the duck in plum sauce and the clams could've had a better black bean sauce. The lobster itself was pretty good. Was trying to order it Typhoon Shelter style. Wasn't quite it but still good. Order took a while to be prepared. Restaurant didn't seem that busy for it to take so long. Overall I highly doubt if I go to any Chinese restaurant in London it will be on the par as Philly or NYC. This was the first time getting take-away from this Lisle Street establishment and after getting over the initial pushy hawker at the front door, I did find it to be a solid place for food. Most London Chinatown restaurants have a large menu posted out front as either a sign or some type of mounted billboard to encourage passers-by to stop and take a look at what is on offer. This place is no different but it does go one step further by having a person posted in the doorway to verbally "encourage"people that stop to look to come inside and look further. I've never really gone for that type of hard sell and I know the psychology behind it is that if they get you inside to show you a menu or try to sit you down, you are more than likely going to stay and buy food. Smart and crafty but irritating nonetheless. Although my hawker deflector shields were up, the jet-lag must have put them in a weakened stated because the young lady at the front door was so persistent and good that I found myself following her inside before I could refuse. She insisted that I sit to look at a menu and she was pushy enough that I thought she was going to try to solicit me or sell me a used car. In the end, it worked and I'm glad it did. I got out of there with a great rendition of Ma-Po Tofu and an order of Diced Chicken and Salt Fish Fried Rice (which was some of the best I've ever had). I'm not big on fried rice in general but the Chicken and Salt Fish is one version that I use to gauge great food. Most people can't stand the funk of salted, fermented fish in the dish but I personally love it and find that good places put in enough to let you know it is there. If it is done properly, it is transformative of simple fried rice and this one hit the mark. Overall, -1 star for the pushy front door person but +1 star for the food giving it a solid 3. No problem for me going back next time. read more

Popped in for sneaky dim-sum-for-1 as a bit of a treat one Sunday; I was shown upstairs which was initially off-putting as I imagined I'd be forgotten about, but this was not the case. Highlights included Duck rolls ( delicious, super crispy wrapping, yet lovely fresh cucumber inside) and calamari ( again, well cooked without being dried out). Clearly the chef is an artist when it comes to frying in oil! Six dishes, a pot of tea, and two Tsingtao beers, plus 10% gratuity came to about £35. read more

Well, I'm going to go with an unconventional review here. My review is not really about food, but karaoke. They have a few karaoke sessions here, some decent hour ones, but the one I go to the most is the one from 11pm to 3am. There are several private rooms upstairs, good karaoke system, two TV screens in the biggest one, the Chinese music is semi-up-to-date, no idea on English one here sorry. I think there are some English music but whether this is up-to-date, I'm going to guess not really, think the usual classics will be there though, and Britney. Britney always makes her way in karaoke somehow. My friend knows pretty much all the waiters here because she comes here all the time for late night karaoke. They are pretty friendly to us, and when there are so many drunk people at the end of the good night, they never complain but give assistance. There are a lot of seats in the biggest private room, 30 people can easily squeeze in. There is the usual "sik chun" dice loaned freely for those Chinese drinking games. A brief mention about food, it's nothing particularly memorable, I don't think the food is the best here and their potions are not huge. But it fills the stomach of those about to drink the night away. read more

Clean restaurant, great service. I started with a cup of seafood tofu soup which was good. For entrees I had a lobster cooked with ginger and scallions. I also had Mapo tofu. Both were excellent. I believe its pretty standard in London that if you want white rice, it costs extra unlike most Chinese restaurants in the U.S. read more

I picked this small establishment out of the many Chinese restaurants in Lisle Street and vicinity because of its bright lights, decent menu, and friendly street barkers. The food was OK, no better: the kung pao chicken was dry breast meat, in unspicy sauce (though the servers seemed to think it was very spicy), with many cashews as advertised (no peanuts), but bell pepper instead of celery as the only veggie. read more

Close to Leicester Square, Super Star will probably be the first Chinese restaurant you will see in Chinatown if you are walking from there. If you are looking for a decent dim sum experience at a reasonable price, look no further! My friend and I went here out of the blue and the leap of faith did not disappoint. The overall dim sum quality was good: the shrimp dumplings were decently sized with a nice wrap and the charsiu bun hit the mark. However, my personal favorite was the egg yolk bun, which the sweetened egg yolk was baked to a grainy texture within like sand - hence the Chinese name of "flowing sand bun" Few dim sum restaurants I have been in the world can do a good job making this excellent egg yolk bun, and I was glad to find one of them in London! You have to get one of this as your dessert dish and be careful about burning your finger with the hot filling. The total was £22, which is reasonable for a dim sum especially in central London. Was looking for a random restaurant to try and stumbled upon this one. Had the superstar special which came with Chinese style lobster, chinese broccoli, salt n pepper spicey squid, fried rice which was all fresh and delicious. I have to say my favorite though was xiao long bao (soup/shanghai dumplings). It was almost as good as din tai fung in LA (fresh, clean soup, tasty). I'm no dumpling expert and people may argue with this, but I enjoyed it. I need to find other places in London to truly compare. read more

A fine Chinese restaurant by my standard. Though the Chinese family next to me was not so impressed. Had reservation for 6 so there was no wait when we arrived on an early Sat night. They have 2 levels and we sat upstairs. Bathrooms are in the basement. Ordered white rice, and several dishes in iron skillets including eggplant, chicken, and beef. All were fine for me. They brought hot water and chrysanthemum tea to drink. For desert they brought a complimentary cubed gelatin dish. Service was good. read more

This new restaurant smells new and looks new. What drew me here was the all day dimsum. Yes, i'm one of those suckers that would pay an arm and leg to not go yumcha on time. I don't know the reason behind why these tasty steamed dishes are only supposed to be eaten for brunch, and i dont care, because i can eat them anywhere any time. As with all menu-ordered all day dimsums, the options are not vast but they do have the staples: - chive and prawn dumplings: so plump and and fresh! - black bean chicken feet: great - char siu/bbq pork bun: 3 little ones that are tasty - lotus wrapped rice: delicious and they're not skimpy on the stuffings - black bean pork ribs: great although a bit on the fatty side. i love that they don't have the white soft bones - spicy wonton: i dont even know why this is on the menu, but my indian friend wanted to order it and it was not good Each dish is £3.60, which is expensive for life, but relatively not in comparison to their neighbours in chinatown *ahem yeung cheng*. Their opening means 20% off, so the price became reasonable. I wish i ordered their custard bun. An economical place to eat dim sum or to have Chinese food for dinner and also for doing karaoke. The dim sum is very average, nothing special, but the dinner dishes are quite well done with a good variety, especially for a venue that does karaoke. The karaoke itself is not great as the system is not particularly user-friendly and actually seems to crash now and again. The service is also questionable. Overall, the venue is good for an economical meal and fun night out for a group of people. read more

Tasty, late night option. Originally planned on going to Mr Kong, but while open till 1, they stop taking orders at midnite. This place filled the bill. For chicken dumplings and duck with black bean sauce and chilis. Dumplings came out relatively quick and were tasty. The duck was surprisingly good, with a nice coating of rich black bean sauce. There is a medium kick to the duck that was perfect for a late nite fill. Service was prompt and attentive. I was pleased that the dishes were not overly salty. I fond that Chinese in Europe is usually way too salty. Perfect for late nite eats in a city still struggling to find a late night identity. read more

I give it 5 star because of the service, cleanliness and great food. Lets face it, all of the restaurants nearby have extensive selection. This place had very good Chinese food at reasonable prices. Not over the top and not trying to be something they are not. Service was impeccable. They are really trying hard to please. TIPS: 1. go with a Chinese speaker...(better service/ different menu) - i'm Korean-American, and as soon as she heard my other Korean friend speak Chinese...no joke...she snatched the menu right from my hand...but i don't care...If you are an avid Chinese food lover you should know by now...service isn't the best... anywhere.... 2. Do not be seated on the third floor in their karaoke room...sometimes when it's too packed they put people in that dark, dingy room...just ask to wait or to be moved. 3. order from their dim sum menu. the fried dim sum: turnip paste something...was DELICIOUS! and their other steamed dim sum r yummy too! 4. Wow, stumbled in for a quick bite and was blown away by the freshness of the food! Incredible dim sum! Had the prawn-chive dumplings (great), Vietnamese spring rolls (BEST spring roll I've ever had-- amazingly crunchy and then soft dough), beef & spring onion dim sum (once again, succulent, tender meat with fresh herbs-- great!), and great steamed pork buns. The won tun soup had a deliciously delicate flavour with decently sized, yummy wontons. Would definitely go here again! Maybe it's just being used to American restaurants, but this place is lacking in so many areas. Being that it was christmas, our options were somewhat limited. So we made our way to Chinatown, and Super Star was a place where the wait wasn't terrible. After about ten minutes, our party of six were seated in a tiny room...on the third floor, wedged between about 20 other people in a room that should probably only seat 10. Whatever, we're tired from walking, hungry, and going on two weeks without rice ( we're Asians on vacation in Europe). Looking at the prices, around 10-15 pounds per dish, we thought it was normal being that its London. So we decided to share a black bean sauce steak, chicken with veggies, sweet and sour pork, egg fried rice, and sweet and sour soup. All of that is roughly around 65-70 pounds worth of food. To our dismay, the dishes came out and were the size of our tiny Asian hands! The soup that we ordered for six pounds ended up being one tiny serving of soup. Maybe it's just because I'm American, and that in my country we would get about 10x the amount of food for what we paid, but it was just unbelievable. It's almost as if they were serving tapas style Chinese food. On top of that, the soup had come out way after we finished our tiny meal. Being seated on the third floor, there was pretty much no service. Quality of the food? At least it was good Chinese food, right? WRONG. Please don't go here - there are a ton of great restaurants in the area which are almost certainly more ethically run than this one. We were double charged for certain items even after explicitly asking and being assured that we wouldn't be. Also charged $7 per bottle of water without being informed before hand via menu or verbally. The food also wasn't very good. read more

I've been going to this restaurant regularly for the past year. They've changed the menu, and changed the people who greet guests at the door way. I couldn't fine my favourite dish on the menu. I asked for beef soup with strap noodles, and they didn't give me strap noodles. The food wasn't at all spicey, which is what I like, and am used to. The Fuijian staff seem to have been replaced by people from Malaysia. That said, for a person with no preconcieved notions, the food was OK, and probably fine for most clients. I, personally, was disappointed. It was neither what I wanted, what I expected, nor what I ordered. After a year's loyal patronage, I am unlikely to go back. read more

Tasty cheap dim sum- Dodgy restaurant name! The dim sums were very fresh and flavourful and not to mention very cheap. I've been here 3 time, the first 2 times I did see the bill and it was very cheap the 3rd time my friend treated me so I did not see the bill but when I asked her the price I think we were overcharged, it costs us about £15 more the the first 2 times, so before you pay up, please make sure you check the bill. read more
