Vegan Chocolate Dessert Fried Ice Cream Cheesecake
    Christy K.

While staying at Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta, my husband and I enjoyed a romantic dinner at Zen. The menu spans Asian cuisines including flavors from Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and others. Upon arriving in the nicely decorated dining room, you are served a sake cocktail and appetizer plate including chicken satay, eggrolls, and sushi next to freshly poured sauces--sweet and sour, soy, and super duper hot. We're not sushi eaters, but found the other items delectable. The serving size was perfect; we were able to taste several specialties without ruining the main course. We both had soup. I did not like the blue crab soup. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was completely puréed without any crab chunks. My husband's Tom Kha was good. The base soup was flavorful and there were shrimp at the bottom. I chose grilled shrimp for my main course. It come with a very small, but tasty salad, and a LOT of shrimp. The shrimp were cooked to a perfect consistency and the sauce and spices were perfect. We splurged on dessert ordering three between us. Our favorite was the fried ice cream, though the ice cream tasted a bit more processed than natural. I would've preferred an all=natural vanilla bean. We love New York cheesecake, and this wasn't it. Of course, it wasn't meant to be... the consistency was somewhere between cake and cheesecake. We also had the chocovegan cake. It is definitely meant for those who love ginger. The wait staff was very attentive and polite and the restaurant employees were quite accommodating. The manager greeted us on our way out with legitimate concern about the quality of our food and service. Given this and the plethora of savory-sounding menu items, we will definitely return.

Excellent food across the board. Best restaurant at the Hard Rock hands down! Wish we could go again. HUGHLY recommend the sushi and chicken entrees and you must get the friend ice cream for dessert!

We ordered unagi nigiri, gyoza and spicy edamame for appetizers. The edamame was not spicy at all so heat is not an issue. The gyoza was perfectly cooked with yummy dipping sauce and the unagi presentation chefs kiss. We ordered chicken curry, fried rice, steak salad and beef tenderloin. We all were very happy with our food selections. I noticed they offered Korean barbecue and a tappanyaki dinner as well. Lots of dining options at Gong. Location is close to the Grand Mayan.

We sat outside on the decking overlooking the man made lake and changing lights on the lush foliage surrounding it. Unfortunately the water light show was not operational this week but the setting was still beautiful and romantic. Eduardo was our estute waiter who spoke perfect English and made wonderful recommendations. We started with a couple of appetizers: the edamame and the ribeye asparagus rolls - both were delicious. Then for our entrees, we had the black cod and the Chilean Seabass. Both presentations were mouthwatering and the fish were extremely fresh, extremely flavorful and flaky. They came with bowls of steamed white rice and a choice of two soy sauce variations. The citrus variety was my favorite. We had amazing cappuccinos from scratch made for us. Another two options we could have done was hibachi or Korean BBQ. Both looked like fun experiences maybe on a future trip. Thank you Gong for making our dinner experience so memorable.

This cute little spot.. you would never know the food was phenomenal. It was downstairs essentially from where we were staying. They sometimes have live music too, although we didn't' get to see this. The grill has exceptional service and offers poolside dining during the day. It also has AMAZING beach views. Each morning, we enjoyed espressos before our walks. The food is outstanding. The steak was a highlight--perfectly cooked and flavorful. I tried the pesto salmon, and while the flavors were delightful, the salmon was slightly overcooked. The tempura was a standout--crispy, light, and not at all greasy. The bruschetta was also delicious. They have a huge menu and plenty to explore if you're staying for a while. Note: they are closed on Tuesdays! We were bummed about that, but happy to have had it one night during our stay!

A bottle of wine and our appetizer arrived promptly. The salad quickly followed. Then we waited. And watched the place get very busy. And waited. At 8:00 I called our waiter over and politely asked if our entrees were near. I was assured they were. At 8:30, I caught his attention and asked (with much frustration) what was going on. At 8:45 (2.5 hours after ordering), I told him to cancel our entrees and bring the check. At 9:00 pm we received our food. I first told him to take it back, but then relented. THREE hours after arriving. It's not the miss, it's the response. No one seemed to care at any point. The GM or chef didn't show up with an apology. No entrees were comped. This also happened to us last Valentine's Day when they were swamped. I told them I would never be back and promptly cancelled our reservations for today, Valentine's Day 2026. We have friends visiting over the next months and have cancelled plans with them as well.

We must have arrive early as there weren't a whole lot of people there and basically got a personal waitstaff experience as we were basically the only ones there. It felt very V.I.P. We ordered some drinks and our meals and as we waited it was wonderful just heading the waves crashing in as the sun began to set. There was awesome live music right in front of our table. The music at the time had a Caribbean/Jamaican vibe mixed along with the local contemporary Mexican club music. We sat there sipping our blue hawaiians, mojitos, and pina coladas as the sun slowly made it's way toward the horizon on the sea. The sky turned ever-changing wonderful shades of orange, peach, pink, chartreuse, blue, and purple. That....is when the feeling of being on vacation sunk in. The waitstaff wasn't overpowering either. I didn't feel like they were rushing us by any means and really allowed us to take in the surroundings. I had order a light meal of the plantains stuffed with black beans with a chipotle mayo dipping sauce and a side of black beans. Oh my gosh it was so good. Just perfectly fried and a mix of sweet, salty, and savory and with the mildly spicy chipotle mayo, it was really wonderful. I will also say that the drinks are big and they are certainly do not skimp on the alcohol. My friend's mom had trouble finishing her mojito as it was so big. Overall though, if I'm ever in the area again, I will DEFINITELY be going here again. It was just a wonderful experience with good friends & family that I'll never forget.

I can't say enough good words about the entertainment but our reservation was at 6 pm and we didn't eat until 8:30. There is absolutely no reason for this delay. What a disappointment! The food was satisfactory but timing us everything. We had young children with us. So the adults had to eat their dinners in haste so that the children could go to bed soon. This was a bad experience.
