While staying at Hard Rock Hotel Vallarta, my husband and I enjoyed a romantic dinner at Zen. The menu spans Asian cuisines including flavors from Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and others.
Upon arriving in the nicely decorated dining room, you are served a sake cocktail and appetizer plate including chicken satay, eggrolls, and sushi next to freshly poured sauces--sweet and sour, soy, and super duper hot. We're not sushi eaters, but found the other items delectable. The serving size was perfect; we were able to taste several specialties without ruining the main course.
We both had soup. I did not like the blue crab soup. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it was completely puréed without any crab chunks. My husband's Tom Kha was good. The base soup was flavorful and there were shrimp at the bottom.
I chose grilled shrimp for my main course. It come with a very small, but tasty salad, and a LOT of shrimp. The shrimp were cooked to a perfect consistency and the sauce and spices were perfect.
We splurged on dessert ordering three between us. Our favorite was the fried ice cream, though the ice cream tasted a bit more processed than natural. I would've preferred an all=natural vanilla bean. We love New York cheesecake, and this wasn't it. Of course, it wasn't meant to be... the consistency was somewhere between cake and cheesecake. We also had the chocovegan cake. It is definitely meant for those who love ginger.
The wait staff was very attentive and polite and the restaurant employees were quite accommodating. The manager greeted us on our way out with legitimate concern about the quality of our food and service. Given this and the plethora of savory-sounding menu items, we will definitely return. read more
