We stopped here after a long day of swimming because the reviews looked promising. When we arrived, there were only two other tables and several staff members on the floor, so we expected attentive service. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. We were served water in very small cups, and no one checked back to offer refills. Our food took quite a while to come out, and throughout the meal, no one came by to see how everything was or if we needed anything. At one point, a server came over and began clearing our table without asking how the food was. I had to stop them to request more water and order a brownie for dessert. The food itself was good, but the service really brought the experience down. If you're not in a hurry and don't mind inattentive service, you may still enjoy it, but otherwise, it could be disappointing. read more

We came to order takeout and ended up staying and trying a few dishes and a bottle of sake mostly because Alfonso, our server, was so friendly and accommodating. Went here because it was in our hotel, extremely disappointing. The ambiance and decor is nice. Service wasn't anything great, extremely basic. The only dishes I liked were the green salad and miso soup. The green salad was very fresh with a delish dressing. The miso soup was tasty; it had noodles in it which was odd for a miso soup, but still good. Everything else was bad. Very small portions. We got the ribeye gyoza, short rib, and chicken teriyaki. There is no way the gyoza was ribeye. It was a ground chicken/turkey color and consistency. No flavor. Fell apart when picked up. Awful. The short rib glaze was good, but was mainly cartilage. Very basic with white rice. The chicken teriyaki was terrible. It was dry and tough. Tasted like they just poured teriyaki sauce on top after cooking. This was by far the worst part of the meal. Chicken thighs would've been a better choice over chicken breast. Everything tasted like I could've made a better version of it at home. The service was extremely subpar; no asking how things were, have a good evening, anything. The worst dining experience I've had in Puerto Vallarta by far. read more

I had a wonderful experience here. Jorge was incredible! I highly recommend requesting him as your waiter. His English was excellent and very helpful when explaining the menu. Thanks to him, I'll definitely be coming back on my next trip. Perfect for date night, late dinner, celebration. Food service was excellent but tastes were similar and somewhat bland. We had 4 people and 2 liked & 2 didn't. We all want to try the hibachi style dinner. They had a wonderful presentation of the meal with twirling knives sauces mixed into the ingredients and flames dancing across the grill. It looked like a fabulous experience with a delicious finish. This place is AMAZING!! We had Jesus and David on Xmas eve and they treated us like royalty. We loved it so much, we came the next night and are booked again tomorrow. The rolls are super interesting, light, creative and unlike anywhere I've ever been. The spectacle of the roll they lit on fire with tequila was so fun for everyone to watch. Highly recommend!! Umai has the best sushi and Japanese food of any restaurant I've tried in Puerto Vallara. Service was pleasant without being overbearing. We ordered the mixed vegetables and shrimp tempura, tuna tostadas, Unagi roll, pork ramen, fried rice with beef and chicken, and a few other things to share. Everything was good, and very reasonably priced. I wouldn't say Umai is amount the top Japanese restaurants I've ever been to, but it's easily the best in Puerto Vallarta. We tried a few cocktails - they were all generally inventive combinations of Mexican/Japanese fusion and were well executed. Covid-19 specific details: currently there is no teppanyaki available because of social distancing requirements with covid-19, but it seems like they would execute it well based on the plates we tried. They did disinfect the table and chairs when we arrived, provided hand sanitizer, have appropriately reduced capacity, and reorganized table arrangements to provide distance. read more

We went to visit Umai, located in the recently added section of the Sheraton. We were seated promptly, as we were their only customers. We ordered off of the restaurant week menu which was not initially offered to us. Thai Salad - excellent, very fresh greens. Seaweed - fair, overly sweet, drown in dressing. Umai - very good, lightly spiced. Spicy Grouper - good, but over cooked, excellent micro vegetables. Chai Tea and Chocolate Cake - very good, not too sweet, ginger ice cream. Lychee Cheesecake - excellent, great way to end a meal. The service was too much. Too many interruptions from servers. With no other customers we were stared at from beginning to end, from all sides. The conversations between servers also was something we did not enjoy, way too loud. Most of the meal was with chopsticks, and spoons offered for dessert. Umai, please invest in better silverware, they are cheap and degrade the dining experience. The chairs are not comfortable. We asked for 2 glasses of water, charged for 2 bottles of water. The jalapeño roll and Pollo Ramen were delicious. The prices were reasonable and the service was great. My only caution is that the bill illegally added a "Mexican check tax" of 53 pesos. This is a ploy to get gringos to pay more. Since we live in Mexico we know tax is included in the menu price. In fact their micro printing in the bottom of the menu tells you that the VAT tax is included in the price. So aside from being put off by this common scam, everything else was fine. read more

THE BEST SUSHI BUT THE WORST SERVICE IN PUERTO VALLARTA My daughter and I are sushi lovers, we love going to Kensao, Mikado and Yeo Sushi, they are our favorites (for food & drinks) and a lot of people mentioned this restaurant, they said that it was the best sushi place in town. So we gave it a try. And they were right, the special rolls they offer are DELICIOUS AND UNIQUE !! The UMAI roll (if you like lemon soy) is DELICIOUS. The CILANTRO roll has no words, it is so soft, it's just amazing. And the classic UNAGUI is wonderful! They follow all the COVID protocol, the place is very clean, and they have a very comfortable environment and beautiful light, they even have a very nice bamboo window. They started very well, they sat us a table and 2 waiters introduced themselves saying that they would be the ones who would take care of us. We ordered the classic MISO Soup very good flavor. We mentioned that we had not eaten all day, that we were very hungry, and in less than 20 minutes the first 2 rolls we ordered arrived (UMAI and CILANTRO) EVERYTHING WAS GOING AMAZING! Even the Manager (Omar Canales) came by our table and asked us if everything was going well, and at first everything was going great. To accompany this meal we ordered a glass of Pinot agrio white wine (very rich), but since it was a nice meal, we preferred to order the full bottle. Usually, when a bottle is ordered in a restaurant, the glass should NEVER be empty, there should always be someone serving. A few minutes later, one table of 6 people arrived, and 3 waiters began to serve them, leaving us behind. 10 minutes passed, and the glass was still empty, we spoke to 2 waiters (since those who showed up at the beginning did not appear again) And everyone said that they will come back in a minute, even a couple who had their anniversary (that had the tepanyaki show) were also waiting to be treated, and just nobody paid any attention to us. Then, we ordered a UNAGUI roll, and this one took 30 minutes, if not longer. We asked again if they could fill our glass and nobody paid any attention. Finally a waitress stopped (Verónica) and we told her that if someone could attend us that we had already been waiting for the other roll for 20 minutes and that they would serve us a drink and no one paid any attention to us. She told us that right now she was sending us our waiter. 10 minutes later, a waiter came to ask us if we wanted another cup of wine (if it not obvious enough) (ps. he was not our server either). We decided to ask for the check and we asked the waiter if he could speak to the manager, and a Mr. in black arrived (who was probably the assistant manager or something) with a gift from a chest with a drink, but we just wanted the bill and comment to the Manager that the service was lousy. And when commenting to the man in black he didn't apologized at all, nor did he treated us nice, he simply said "don't worry, we appreciate your comments" simply nefarious and not at all friendly or professional. And when we paid the bill, we were heading out and mr. canales was coming in, so we told him that we had asked to speak with him and they never spoke to him, we told him the situation and he was very kind he offered us an apology for the attitude of everyone and offered us to go to the bar with free drinks and more, but we were not looking to have any free service or product, so we just left. We were looking for good food and good service because everybody said it was an amazing place, but only 50% of this was achieved. Their menu is EXQUISITE but they have THE WORST WORKERS the only person who is worth it is the manager and the chef. I have been here and the one at the Marriott hotel for teppanyaki and sushi and this was so much better. The sushi here is so fresh and they were so accommodating to helping us with things we wanted. Our waiter Miguel was fantastic and made the dinner perfect. Our teppanyaki chef Daniel was a lot of fun. Drinks made to perfection and the pricing was not bad at all. Will absolutely be back. Only note I would recommend is that if you want the teppanyaki experience than tell them ahead of time as there is only one area where the one at the Marriott has lots of tables. Hi, I am a regular to PV (25 years) every May for two weeks. I own at the Sheraton Buganvilias. By far the best Sashimi I have eaten. The grill is good, but stick to the chicken and shrimp.
