We didn't have a reservation but we were seated right away. Most likely no issues getting a table when you travel in November during the slow season. Service was immediate and courteous. We ordered unagi nigiri, gyoza and spicy edamame for appetizers. The edamame was not spicy at all so heat is not an issue. The gyoza was perfectly cooked with yummy dipping sauce and the unagi presentation chefs kiss. We ordered chicken curry, fried rice, steak salad and beef tenderloin. We all were very happy with our food selections. I noticed they offered Korean barbecue and a tappanyaki dinner as well. Lots of dining options at Gong. Gong, a modern Asian restaurant continues to be one of our favorites when we are on vacation in our Nuevo Vallarta resort. We sat outside on the decking overlooking the man made lake and changing lights on the lush foliage surrounding it. Unfortunately the water light show was not operational this week but the setting was still beautiful and romantic. Eduardo was our estute waiter who spoke perfect English and made wonderful recommendations. We started with a couple of appetizers: the edamame and the ribeye asparagus rolls - both were delicious. Then for our entrees, we had the black cod and the Chilean Seabass. Both presentations were mouthwatering and the fish were extremely fresh, extremely flavorful and flaky. They came with bowls of steamed white rice and a choice of two soy sauce variations. The citrus variety was my favorite. We had amazing cappuccinos from scratch made for us. Another two options we could have done was hibachi or Korean BBQ. Both looked like fun experiences maybe on a future trip. Thank you Gong for making our dinner experience so memorable. read more

Probably the worst Asian food I have ever had. The dumplings were dry and chewy. They didn't seem fresh at all. We have had dumplings before and these were the worst we have ever had. The Kung Pao Chicken had no flavor and the chicken pieces were hard and had alot of batter on them. The dish had some sweet sauce but it didn't even taste like Kung Pao Chicken. The ambiance was the only saving grace. Also the service was lacking the waiter was abrupt and not friendly and personable. I would never go back and don't recommend this restaurant. Gong Great views, great service. You have entertainment on the lake with a great light show and music. This place was really good but pretty pricey. I ordered the shrimp Pad Thai although it was a nice portion it only had five shrimp on it and it was $20. My friend ordered the Kung Pow Chicken that was around $20 as well, it was very good. Just saying, prepared for the prices are going to spend at this resort big crisis for small taste. And most of the drinks we have had don't really have much alcohol in them. I made my reservation through open table and asked for a table with a view, they delivered! Our table was up front right by the water and the light show that goes every thirty minutes. The patio seating was pretty much full to capacity too, so this was very good planning on their part! We began our meal with the duck dumplings and the asparagus rolls. Both dishes were very good but small portions. There only four dumplings and four small stalks of asparagus roll. Of the two, I really liked the asparagus rolls. This was a surprise to me because I never order these. Our waiter though, told us they were very popular so we decided to give them a try. Asparagus wrapped in steak with a spectacular soy glaze, I could have had two orders to myself and been very happy. The duck dumplings were flavorful too. The filling was a nice complex combination of flavors and the wrapper wasn't gummy. I think the sauce on the side could have been better. It was just a bit too thin and didn't stick to the dumpling when dipped. I had the shrimp in black curry and hubby had the black cod. His black cod was so good! A real treat! The fish was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right. Better than lobster I think! Portion size was average, not too big or too small. Plus a side of rice came with both dishes. The only small issue with the black cod was the price tag was huge! My shrimp in black curry was really good too for a much more reasonable price. My portion was huge! Could easily have served two people. There was tons of shrimp on the plate. The shrimp was cooked well and the black curry was really tasty with a bit of spice to it. I have never had this before but loved it! There was no room for dessert. Finally a note on service, even though two waiters tag team each table, service could be much improved. Took a while for them to show up and then when we needed a few more minutes to look over the menu they literally didn't show back up for 30 minutes. Like Christina K, I was a bit miffed when I called to reserve our table for 8 for dinner at 7:30pm and they said they were booked and didn't have any space available due to 3 other larger groups. The guy on the phone suggested a later time of 8:30pm which we agreed to. Gong actually has a large outdoor seating area and the inside isn't that small either. As we were tired of getting bit up by mosquitos we reserved an indoor table, and when we arrived the place was almost completely dead, inside and out. I'm sure you could have probably even walked up and got a table, but still call ahead to reserve just in case. The dinner service was nice. It was like we had a personalized waiter as there appeared to be one guy assigned for the whole table. He was very informative about the wine selection and offered commentary for those with food allergies. I ordered an avocado roll without the eel and veggie fried rice. I was eating light so that I could have froyo later. Nonetheless, the sushi was very nice and a perfect portion and the avocado was fresh and just ripe enough. The veggie fried rice was also a perfect portion. It wasn't too big where I felt like I would have leftovers, but wasn't too small whereas I was left still hungry. One of the people in my party got like a hot pot that they bring a gas stove thing to the table and the soup cooks in front of you. It was actually kind of exciting with the risk of possibly catching the entire table on fire. Overall, I was glad we chose Gong as everyone at the table was able to get something they really enjoyed and the food and drinks were actually very good. Everything was also very reasonably priced, as most things are in Mexico. The dress code says casual/formal in the resort manual, but it's actually more so casual. It's the Asian restaurant concept at the Grand Mayan resort. I walked up once for a table for one and I was told they were booked till 8:45. I looked around, flummoxed, because there were plenty of open tables. Came back another night and was able to get a table. I just had the noodles with curry and tofu. Lack luster. Fried tofu pieces were good, but it wasn't curry flavored at all. That's what I get for wanting Asian food in Mexico and not just sticking to sushi. Menu has sushi rolls, fried rice and noodles, and a few stir fries. Of all the restaurants on site I tried, I was least impressed with Gong, though it does have lovely views of the river. I should've known to stay away from this place while on our visit to The Vidante resort Grand Mayan, when we attempted to make reservations for the teppan/hibachi dinner. First we went directly inside and were told they were unable to make reservations but said they would call us. We then went to the concierge that was in our hotel and he called. He said there were no reservations left for that night so we choose a night 2 days later. He then made our NO CANCELLATION PAY UP FRONT BEFORE YOU EAT THERE reservations. Yes. You read that right. No cancellations and it was pre paid. AND it was $55 per person. The rest of our group really wanted to go there, so we conceded and agreed. What a mistake. We arrived 5 minutes prior and waited 20 minutes to be seated. Sat down with no information about our meal, nothing. No drink orders. Finally when the miso soup came out we asked for drinks. Ordered a beer. Miso soup had zero flavor. Sushi rolls were good, you get 2 different kinds. I made the mistake of asking if there was any shrimp in the rolls, which there wasn't. After the rolls, our chef comes out. He put on ZERO show, had no interaction with us, and we again, were never asked if we wanted steak, chicken or fish and how we wanted our meat. He literally stood in front of us and cooked. Cooked the rice, cooked the chicken, threw the chicken on top and served. Next veggies. You get 2 pieces of broccoli and a ton of mushrooms and bean sprouts. He then proceeded to ruin the steak by overcooking, served. Then the shrimp. Because I am allergic, I didnt get any shrimp. But they divided my portion up with the entire table. And didnt offer me any extra/additional meat. Normally I instruct the chef to give my shrimp to my husband. No one ever came to check on us, there was zero communication and we were never offered additional beverages. We were served a mixed drink with no description. When we were done, we were served a sorbet of some sort, never told what it was. Half way through, they were literally taking the sorbet away from us, telling us to leave. HORRIBLE experience. Zero seasoning and when I asked for something to dip it in besides soy sauce - I was given what appeared to be teriyaki - but tasted more like thick A1 mixed with something else. Our server, Jesus, was there for our every need throughout the entire meal. Had the Shabu-Shabu for two and it was absolutely delicious. Recommend the sirloin wrapped asparagus as an appetizer.
