Yesterday, Halu was closed during the Cherry Blossom Festival! ]: We didn't have a backup dinner plan, but this became it. It's a bar that also serves up food. My cousin would come here a lot back in the day so he suggested it. It's a biker bar and a biker bar atmosphere. So it is very loud. They were playing heavy metal that day, but they play other music other nights as well. And it's communal seating.. So you may or may not like it. My cousin was definitely right: we were going to love the food. I think one of my cousin's girlfriend wasn't in love with the level of loudness though. The sign says no smoking outside, but it's just the first three tables next to the back entrance wall where you can't smoke. (Because one of the staff members told a customer he could smoke anywhere but the table he was at). -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-FOOD-*-*-*-*- I didn't drink so I can't comment on the bar stuff, but the food is really good. Came here on a Friday afternoon around 2:30pm and it was surprisingly crowded! We ordered drinks at the bar and found a table outside. From the street, you wouldn't expect a nice outdoor backyard in this place. However, there's a spacious courtyard with picnic tables and umbrellas in the back. Most of the shaded tables were taken, but we got one that was partially shaded. The cider was pretty good and reasonably priced($8 for a large glass). You can order food, too. They have burgers, fries, and other beer garden type foods. My main reason for giving 3 stars is because I saw two rats chasing each other in the courtyard. I strongly dislike rats, so this frightened me a bit. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that there are rats in the city, but it took me by surprise. First time visiting Zeitgeist this past Friday and I was surprised that I've never been to this bar in the Mission. I'm sure I've passed by it but the place is really unassuming from the outside, but actually opens up really well once you enter. As you walk in the bar is quite large for SF standards but as you keep walking you realize that they also have an outdoor beer area with large picnic tables/umbrellas to enjoy your brews. 5:30PM on a Friday was already PACKED so be sure to come early if you're with a large group and want a place to sit. A little grungy of a place which is not for everyone but I like the place. Mainly beers on tap, but you can order other well drinks & beers at the bar. Order at the outside window to save some time during peak hours. They also have a small kitchen to order bites like fries & burgers to help with all the pitchers of beer. ***CASH ONLY*** but there is an ATM outside or other bank ATMs in the area Only gripe with this place is smoking is allowed throughout the entire back patio area so it can get overwhelming at times even with the ash trays on the tables. read more

We were a DIY wedding with no wedding planner, so had to pull together a lot of things in the end. with about 1.5 weeks to go, we still needed to book an after-party location. We were looking for a casual spot for drinks and time to chat but also in a location that allowed us to "level up" if we wanted to go out dancing with enough space for up to 90 people. Given that Halloween fell on a Wednesday, I was particularly nervous about places being crowded and showing up to a space with 2 full bus loads of people and having them wait in line. My (now) husband and I love the Mission and had been to Zeitgeist a few times and really like the open / outdoor patio. Nicole (the event manager) was super responsive and easy to work with via email and on the day of the event, the staff made sure that our guests were able to be let in as easily as possible. At the end of the night, we didn't end up hitting our tab minimum so they stocked us up with wine to go in order to hit it, which felt like a win-win situation. I would definitely recommend Zeitgeist for larger, casual group events and we still love going to grab a casual drink. I wish they had more shareable, casual snack options (e.g., fries) available, but they were perfect for what we had been hoping for. read more

My review is in regards to the people complaining that animals should be allowed no matter what: first let me preface it by saying that I was there a few weeks ago and someone had their dog off leash just roaming around-wtf? Even more recently than that I heard someone that sat down beside me side of me say that their dogs not even a therapy dog they just told the door person that it was....but mostly I'm making this comment because this is an outdoor bar with rocks and cement on the ground. Zeitgeist is right beside of the freeway and so therefore inherently there are mice and rats because there's food present that means there's also rat feces, mixed within the rocks, as well. Also, of course, by accident people drop glasses and they break into the rocks as well, so if you want your dog walking around in that, then, by all means, keep complaining about the way Zeitgeist treats you when your dog acts up! to me....it seems abusive to subject your dog to loud music....what are you gonna do to go ask them to turn the volume for your dogs comfort? (With these comments previous to mine whining about this or that related to letting their dog into a BAR) It's highly possible....you can imagine that these people will stoop to any depth to stay woke ie: all about themselves-aholics. read more

My friends and I feel very strongly and differently about Zeitgeist, and we decided my rating then averages out to a very solid 3 stars. The good: very chill, organic vibe. It's a bit grungy, a bit messy, a teeny bit shove-y, but you could hang here for hours with your friends and a strong selection of beers. It feels like an oasis away from the rest of SF. The so-so: Inconsistent food. The cheese was barely melted on our cheeseburger after waiting a half hour for it. The garlic parm fries were a bit small, but the flavor was great. We wish there had been more on the menu that was shareable. Also, you really have to like heavy metal to hang out for a while; to each her own. The bad: It seems that the bartenders take some pleasure in being curt and not particularly welcoming to patrons. Maybe that's because they know they're going to be popular no matter what. read more

This used to be my favorite dive bar for the last 4 years. While I embraced the bad temper of all the bartenders and servers, lately this has actually affected the experience while at this location. Also: 1-Snice they have to offer food with alcoholic drinks, they ask you to order a food item BUT....."French fries do not count" WTF????? 2-The servers, when approaching the tables, make you put your mask (reasonable), but they will not engage in conversation or explain the menu, instead they will say.. did you look at the menu? (Like you are too busy to do your damn job). Sometimes they will not even respond to your questions...true story.. 3-Apparently they can't afford Pandora for biz account because every 2 songs there is a commercial break of the same amount of length from the 2 songs that just played. Super divey bar with lots of beer options on tap. Prices are reasonable, ranging from $6-$8 for beer and around $24 for pitchers (depends on the price of the individual drink). It can get pretty crowded here on weekend nights, so make sure to come early if you have a bigger group. Also, bring plenty of cash (although there is an ATM). Sometimes the amount of smoking going on throughout the patio can be really annoying if you don't smoke yourself. I wish they could have a smoking/non-smoking section! read more

These are some of the Best Bloody Mary's in Town, I have never been disappointed in my drink at Zeigeist - that's why I will continue to come back regularly. If I'm going to make my list of bloody mary spots - Zeit will be at the top of my list. I also have to highly recommend the Burgers, especially the Veggie Burgers at Zeit. EXTREMELY RUDE STAFF - SLOW SERVICE - MAY OR MAY NOT EVER GET YOUR ORDER BUT THEY'LL TAKE YOUR MONEY! They should really learn to train their staff in customer service. When you arrive, they don't greet you and instead make you feel like a hassle and a bother when you are trying to support their business. They are also very quick to scold you on Covid precautions but don't hold up their end of the deal by providing a decent service. When we ordered we were instructed to pay as we go. Fine. Then when we ordered french fries with our drinks (per SF requirement to order food with drinks) it never came. We asked the waiter who then gave us attitude asking "well do you want a refund...". No apologies. We ended up leaving because the food never came and we were never checked on after our first drinks. For an establishment that prides itself on Covid Safety, they should really be paying attention to their guests better. This has been a neighborhood bar that I had frequently gone too and I understand the scene, it's a biker bar the bartenders aren't going to hold your hand, etc. However I had an experience here I will never forget (in a bad way) I entered the bar with my boyfriend on a Saturday evening around 5:00pm. My boyfriend went into the bar before me. The bouncer at the door asked for my ID, which I politely gave to him. He had a dirty look on his face and he proceeded to ask me, "Are you with that guy?" To which I responded, "Yes that is my boyfriend. Is everything okay?" He said, "Yeah I guess I just didn't like his attitude." I saw my bf hand him his ID and he gave it back and that's all that happened. The bouncer is light skinned, curly haired brown hair. I feel that it's fair to mention that I am Caucasian and my boyfriend is 100% Peruvian. I asked the bouncer why did he think that my boyfriend gave him an attitude and the bouncer responded that it didn't matter, it was his job to decide who was "intoxicated"and who wasn't and he didn't like my boyfriends attitude. I proceeded to question the bouncer, I asked him if he thought we should leave? That if he thought my Boyfriend shouldn't be here? Then we could just leave? He said no just get out of my face. So I proceeded to the bar. Literally five seconds later the same bouncer approached us, and said we needed to leave. I asked him why? He said it doesn't matter why. This huge bouncer immediately put me in a chokehold like an MMA fighter and dragged me out of the bar with my feet dragging on the floor. Once I was outside the bar, he forcefully pushed me down onto the sidewalk. I hit my head really hard, bruised and scraped up both of my knees because of the fall. He threw me down so hard he knocked the wind out of me and I couldn't breathe. I called 911, reported the bouncer. I was taken by ambulance to the E.R. I filed a police report on him. I just want to warn people, women in general to think twice about going to this bar. People get thrown out, battered and abused for no reason. It's extremely excessive and really out of line. I had a friend come help me and she tried to talk to the owner, they kicked her out and proceeded to verbally abuse her in front of the bar as well. This place is a mess!!! Yeah it's private property and I can understand throwing out a drunk causing problems, but not physically assaulting a small women for no damn good reason. I am disgusted with this bar. And trying to cover it up by deleting my yelp review is also disgusting. I implore you not to spend your money here, and please go elsewhere. read more

The staff here is so mean for no reason! I've been coming here for years, and they're so consistently nasty, I finally feel compelled to comment on it. Last night, my group of POC friends was completely ignored, and when the staff finally decided they could serve us (there was no one else at the bar or the door, so idk where the distraction was), the bartender rolled his eyes and acted like we were inconveniencing him by wanting to spend our money lol. Been here twice, first time was fine but had a very nasty confrontation by a bartender when I went again yesterday. I ordered a single pitcher and did not add a tip. The bartender (short, ponytail, headband, tattoos all around, very white) must have looked at the display because he asked me aggressively "is everything okay?." I chucked, thinking he was kidding before he barked "This isn't a joke. Some of us rely on tips to make a living." I was still confused and shocked about why he felt entitled to demand a tip after spending all of 20 seconds filling up the pitcher so I walked away without retort. I told the group that I was in about what happened and they made a point to avoid this bartender when we got more rounds. I am more than willing to tip my waiter, my barber, a bartender who actually makes me a drink.. not sure why doing the bare minimum required of your job made you feel entitled to a tip or made you think it's okay to bark at someone a third of your age. I worked in service and now work in healthcare... very sad how the standards for service are so different here. read more

Dive bars are not my favorite, but if you're in the area and you love beer, then Zeitgeist is an easy, casual option. Three of us stopped in for beers and enjoyed them in the outside patio area. The weather was perfect that day, and we shared a big pitcher of draft beer which my husband selected from the bar. The patio was full of customers enjoying the afternoon with friends. We opted not to grab food, because I wanted to go somewhere that had upscale cocktails, but they do have a small food menu. If I were to return in the future I'd most likely opt for a bloody mary which is one of the things they're known for. They even have Flanders red sours, which was surprising for a dive bar. The outside has many picnic tables with many ash trays. The night I was here you could not escape the smokers, which was the main detractor here and would keep me from coming back again. It was loud but that is to be expected at a place like this. FYI - There are no heaters except on the porch for cold nights. Also FYI - They started taking credit cards as of a month ago, but they don't do tabs and the minimum is $20, so IMHO still bring cash here if you're not doing group orders at the bar. read more

Horrible experience and extremely rude staff. Took 20 minutes to get a crappy drink, saw others getting scolded by the staff too... it wasn't just us. Also Refused to provide us waters?? This is one of the cases where you have to know your audience. For a dive bar, this is a 4 star place. For a bar in general, I think it's a one star. It didn't like the place because the staff was amazingly slow. It took over minutes to be noticed or even get a drink. The staff was rude to my coworkers and I didn't appreciate that the clientele was rude and unfriendly. I was bumped into over and over again while standing in and outside the bar area. There seemed to be no basic courtesy in this establishment from either the staff or its clients. Another disgusting part of this bar is the bathrooms. It's not a bathroom folks. It's three port-a-potties in a row only a few feet from the out door tables. Eeew.
