Slow service, failure to bring the hummus appetizer until the 3rd request, minimal pita bread for the hummus, but worst of all was the beef shish kabob. When we told the waitress how poor it was and to please simply charge for the chicken kabob she said she could only give us a discount on a future visit. I should have known better than to eat here. The dining room was empty yet the waitstaff was unfriendly and unconcerned when I entered. I ordered Mediterranean Salmon which was served with rice and salad yet offered another side - for which I subbed subbed roasted red pepper hummus instead of the traditional because they were the same price as appetizers and an Arnold Palmer. The Arnold Palmer seemed to be made with Minute Maid lemonade, which I do not like because of its funny aftertaste. When I sent it back and asked for water instead, I was questioned as to why I did not like it, told that it was probably because it's a mixture of lemonade and tea (who doesn't know that), and was tried to be persuaded to get a Coke instead. The salmon looked good but was overcooked and tough. The roasted red pepper hummus was rancid and had a sour bite to it. Anyone could clearly see I was not satisfied with my meal as I had only taken two bites of the fish and barely touched the hummus and asked for my check and a to-go box. I debated whether to complain and ask for a refund or just bring my uneaten portion back home to my dog. I chose the latter because I wasn't going to pay for the food and leave it. When I finally got the check, I noticed I had been charged an additional $3 for the hummus that was already offered. The waitress argued with me, went to get a menu, and called me rude for asking her not to come over the other side of the table to read it to me. Even with this, she kept telling me I was going to pay the additional $3 because it was extra. The previous waiter who initially took my order did not discuss any additional price for the side. But this new waitress told me I was going to pay it when I told her I was not going to pay anything more than the $19 salmon meal that I ordered. She continued to argue, so I took $20 out of my purse and left that cash payment for my food. I was told not to come back to the restaurant ever again, to which I responded that won't be an issue because the food was not good. Who knew this little gem would occupy such an unassuming strip mall? From the outside I did not have much by way of expectations, but once I stepped inside Zara's Mediterranean Kitchen that all changed. Luckily my raised expectations were surpassed. The first thing to see is the décor. This space has obviously been meticulously (and painstakingly) outfitted with the utmost of care. The attention to detail comes through as a passion to make the restaurant the best it can be. There's just no other explanation. This is not just some nice furniture and some cute knick-knacks. The ornate wall hangings are just as beautiful. There's even a few that seem too exquisite for a restaurant. It's as if you're in someone's home. The show-stopper is the ceiling. Each ceiling panel has been dressed in beautiful fabrics. This gives the amazing effect of dining beneath a huge quilt. In fact, the décor was so impressive that I forgot to take pictures of it! Next: the service. We were greeted and treated with the highest respect. I mean they really were professional here. They were kind and attentive too. We were checked up on several times during our meal. Our food came out quickly and it was hot. Oh, the food! It was very delicious. Not salty. But seasoned very well. The preparation was on point. I had the gyro platter with basmati rice and lentil soup. The gyro meat was plentiful and done just right. The soup was pipping hot and it stayed warm throughout the whole meal. And the rice was awesome. It looked plain but it was very flavorful. The tzatziki sauce was fresh and tasty. It really didn't get much attention because the food was so good already. The pita bread had to have been just freshly made. It was so good and inviting. I kept peeling it apart and using it to pinch up the sauce of my wife's dinner! She had the tilapia plate. She enjoyed it very much. I'm not a huge fan of fish, but the sauce was heavenly. We had no room for dessert but I saw baklava on the menu. It's been a long time since I've had that. I had the fried kibbeh it to start and the Shwarma platter with hummus and Greek salad. The portions are abundant and the flavor is like nothing I've had before. I've been here twice -- once for takeout and once for dining in with a friend. Together we've tried the Gyro Platter, Shawarma Lover Platter, and Chachu's Salad. All are great! The platters are very filling because it comes with a generous portion of meat, pita, and two sides (my vote is the hummus and feta salad). Also, the Mango drinks are very refreshing. My experience at Zara's was not nearly as exquisite as others apparently. Upon walking in, you seat yourself and hopefully if they aren't busy a waitress will see you and come to your table to deliver the menus. This is not always a good idea, as evidenced by my nearly 5 minute wait to get service. After ordering drinks and food, it took about another 15 mins for the drinks to come to the table. I ordered the beef koobideh, as I usually do at Persian/Mediterranean type restaurants as well as the lamb shish kebab. The beef was a little on the dry side and I basically had to dip it in the white sauce provided for moisture. I'm not sure why they ask you how you want your lamb cooked, if they have no intention on cooking it that way. Ordered medium rare and it came out well done. Thus, the lamb was just too tough. I did enjoy the "special" tea, only because it is different from any teas I've ever had. Service continued to be subpar when it came time to pay and leave. I was charged for 2 special teas, even though I ordered only one, and overcharged by $1 on the lamb shish kebab. Not sure how all that happened, but brought it to the attention of the waiter and he resolved the problem by comping the 2 drinks, correcting the lamb pricing and giving an additional discount on overall bill. I normally get shwarma meat platter and is never disappointing. My husband's fixed menu is lamb shank and he will only get that, and he loves it.
