Delicious food especially the Lamb Shank. We had to come back 3 times during our stay in Portland. Super nice guy :)

This was my first time buying Mediterranean food from a street vendor and the service was great. The man was very knowledgeable and helpful and I didn't feel rushed at all. My only complaint is that the lamb meat in my gyro was not shaved from a rotisserie like it has been at every other Mediterranean place I've eaten, it was very thinly sliced, pre-packaged cold cut style meat. It really changed the flavor. All of the other ingredients were fresh and delicious so I was a little bummed to see him whip out those thin frozen strips of meat when preparing my sandwich. A few weeks ago, the owner contacted me and told me that they had read this review and had made the decision to start using fresh lamb instead of the cold cut style meat. This is great news and from some of the photos I've looked at, the gyros look absolutely amazing now. I can't wait until my next trip to Portland so that I can stop in and have one. If they taste as good as they look, I will definitely be re-editing this review afterwards. So far, I've been back to Portland twice and both times, I've stopped by Zaalook to try the new meat. The first time, it was early in the day and I didn't realize that their hours are 8pm to 3am. Last night I tried again at about 9:25pm and they were closed again. I only make it to Portland from Seattle a few times a month at that so I guess I'll have to keep trying. I was pretty disappointed that they were closed because I really wanted a gyro but not from any other place. We settled for On Deck Sports bar just a few blocks away and that made me really wish that Zaalook had been open. Oh well. Maybe next time. I finally made it back to Zaalook when they were open and I got to order the lamb gyro. Just as the owner said in the message to me, they have changed their ways and started using real lamb meat. Everything else about the gyro was the same. Quality ingredients but it still didn't taste right. Instead of the traditional lamb/beef combo meat that cooks all day on a rotisserie, they are using roasted lamb meat. Don't get me wrong, the meat did taste good but it just isn't right in my opinion on the gyro not to mention that they seem to use very little of it to stretch their profits. I wasn't lucky enough to have a little meat in each bite of my gyro. It's definitely way better than the cold cut meat they were using before but still a let down after trying so many times to go back and update my review. With so many other places to try in the downtown Portland area, I'm afraid that I won't be going back to Zaalook for a very long time if ever. If ever the owners of Zaalook are in Washington, make a point to stop by a place in Tacoma called It's Greek To Me located at 1702 6th Ave, Tacoma, WA 98405 (253) 272-1375. Stopped at the cart late night and the guy working was super friendly from the start and greeted me with a big smile. After I ordered I was hanging out waiting for my food and he looked out from the cart and said "you know what, I'm gonna throw in and make a special salad for you!" Best Shawarma around for sure. We live in the neighborhood and have eaten many shawarma's in Portland and abroad, and this one was the most delicious. For $8.00, I had a delicious chicken shawarma (get the lavash over the pita) and I loved every bite. From the pickles to the chicken, it was so tender and flavorful. If I didn't live down the block, I would drive in from miles away to eat here. read more

I saw that they delivered late at night and slightly remembered the cart but, didn't seem to impressed. Holy smokes. The Moroccan chicken was not only edible but, good. I am falling asleep completely satiated and slightly feeling guilty about useing ubereats. I recommend getting forks, napkins if you need them. They don't provide. This was the best lamb gyro I've had in years. Everything was so fresh. The feta was traditional sheep's milk feta. The handsome guy working there really knows what he's doing with his food. Plus he's just a really personable, nice guy. We chit chatted about his cart and hung out with him for a while. He gave us all some incredible hot green tea, and invited us back for hookah and tea later. Unfortunately we were playing a show and had to be on the road right after. My vegetarian friend asked for a falafel gyro and they were out of falafel. But that didn't stop him from calling his (I'm guessing) mother or grandmother and having her deliver some ready to be made falafel just for my friend. Seriously awesome cart. Super nice people. Cheating! This place and the guy there was plainly cheating us. After payment (I added a 15% tip too) was done through my credit card, we asked him why was it $40 when it was supposed to be $28+tip. He said that the price that is shown in the menu has changed and the prices has gone up on all the items. Then I asked it would still be $30 based on the prices changes he told, but why is it $40. He said that there is a processing fee of $3 for card transaction. Still it would be only $33 but not $40. When asked, He started giving all stupid explanations and told to call his owner and that he is not responsible for the prices. He was rude and was confident in all wrong ways that he can get over it. I later talked to a friend and was told that he also had similar experience with this tuck guy. Please do not encourage these kind of businesses and attitudes. Please check your bills and do not encourage such open frauds. read more

Excellent little hidden gem. Had the lamb gyro and chicken gyro. Very tender and moist, and generous portions. The damn pita bread..so good! He's also starting to sell some Moroccan soup, which he gave us some samples and it was excellent! First, keep in mind I'm rating this with the actual price in mind (I used the $10 for $5 yelp deal) so the actual value I got was pretty good.. I ordered one lamb gyro and fries for myself and a falafel gyro for my girlfriend and it came to 16.50 (11.50 when factoring in the coupon). The lamb meat was seasoned decently and wasn't on the heavy or light side (average amount of meat). The pita was kind of spongy and had a different aftertaste them most, wasn't bad but wasn't great or anything either and the tzatziki was pretty good.. all flavors combined it was a overall average, or slightly above average gyro.. definitely didn't blow my mind like a Sultans Kitchen Doner and you surely can find a better gyro in portland without too much effort, but this was a decent one none the less.. My girls experience with her falafel gyro was similar, not bad but not amazing.. and the fries were just your average fries.. with that said 16.50 for this order is not good value, 7 dollars for a super gyro that was the same size as any 6 dollar gyro i've had is not a good value when comparing it to other places. So I had to knock a star off for the bad value.. would be a 3 or 4 star rating if the actual price was 11.50 for the order. read more
