We came in on a Monday night for a birthday for one of our party. We were seated promptly and the hostess was very nice. The restaurant is kept very clean . It took a little while for a server to come see us though. They staff the kitchen plentifully but it sees as though they may be short on servers. We ordered appetizers chicken sticks and calamari and both were excellent. For entires, we ordered orange chicken, lemon chicken, the rainbow lo mein, kung pao chicken, and then sweet and sour chicken. The food is so very good. Probably the best Americanized Chinese food we've ever had. Especially the kung pao. One thing to watch out for is the tip is added to your bill automatically. Years ago when we lived in the area, Yu's was our go to place. We've not been here for quite some time so we looked forward to coming back. The restaurant is huge and most tables have a view of the glass walled kitchen. We started with hot and sour soup. This was one of my favorites way back and it was just as good as I remembered. We also ordered Moo She Pork and Mongolian Beef. The Moo Shoo Pork was better when doused with hoisin sauce. It seemed a bit bland without. The Mongolian Beef itself was pretty good. The issue was the sauce was totally congealed making it visually unappealing. The beef definitely needed the sauce and it was hard to spread the "blob's of what was supposed to be sauce. Service was a fair at best. One of the floor people was responsive with water and drink refills but we rarely saw our server. I remember hearing somewhere, "you can't go back". Came with our friends who have been here before with their families. Everything was delicious! The soy milk was hot and comforting. I prefer mine more sweet though! I added a packet of sugar but it didn't taste as good after. The Chinese dough was huuuuge!! And sooo good!! The king mushroom with egg tofu was very soft and delicious. The appetizer sampler had a good variety. The lollipop chicken was very good and even the string beans! We made a reservation ahead of time but the restaurant is huge. I've had multiple bad experiences with carry-out orders from here because of the packaging. They use plastic lids that are not safe for hot food. The food often ends up smelling and tasting like melted plastic, which completely ruins the meal. On top of that, the plastic lids are frequently warped or partially melted, so they don't even close properly. This causes spills, leaks, and makes the food feel unsanitary by the time it gets home. read more

This used to be the best Chinese food my family ever had, but it has really gone down in recent years. Flavors have become pretty bland with increased prices. The eggrolls we got were soo peppery they made a few of us cough while eating them. Their portions sizes have gotten much smaller and the amount of meat they give is insufficient for the price. One of few decent Chinese restaurants in the Chicago suburbs. If your friends or relatives can't drive into the city, this is a good choice for a large group to gather. The food can't hold a candle to the places in Chinatown or Argyle Street but it's levels above some of the awful places I've been to in the northwest suburbs. Such a bummer. Everything on the menu looked great and I wasn't put off by the reviews that mentioned bad service (that usually means the food is good!). We stopped for dinner on a busy Friday night but got seated right away. We had well over 15 minutes at the table before anyone came to take a drink/food order. We got the appetizer sampler, mu shu pork, spicy eggplant and one cocktail. The food took a normal amount of time to come out (the robot is cute) but nothing tasted that good. The sampler was $17 and might not be worth that with double the food. My eggplant was soggy and the tortillas (not thin house made pancakes) for the mu shu pork were cold. We took most of it to go but when it first came out, I ordered a smoothie. We finished our food, boxed it to go, paid the bill and still waited ANOTHER 15min for the smoothie. Ridiculous. This used to be my parent's favorite place to eat Chinese food back in the day we went this year for father's day. The service was honestly terrible there was not clear line at the front of the restaurant and the hostess was never there and we had a reservation. When we finally got seated we didn't really have a waiter and they just kind of pointed where we should go. We sat there for about 10 minutes until they finally came with water and menus. The environment was fine it was kind of sticky but was okay. We ordered kung pao chicken, orange chicken and fried rice. The kung pao was disappointing and plain. And the orange chicken had wayyyyy to much sauce you it tasted like it was dunked in orange jam and then they poured an entire jar on top of the chicken. The basic fried rice was the best thing we had. Overall we would not come again but we enjoyed it how it used to be. read more

Last night I went out with several friends celebrating two birthdays. We had dinner at this location. It is so much better than the Vernon Hills location. I have not been to the Schaumburg location in a few years, but their quality still is fabulous. We had a table of nine and our server's name was Rei. He did an amazing job! There were a lot of requests and he managed our table very well. The quality of food was excellent. I stepped away from our table and asked.Rei if Yu's offered anything for birthdays. He said they could provide free ice cream. After we finished dinner and boxed up our leftovers, Rei and another female waitress brought out the two ice cream dishes with a lighted candle in each. I've been going to Yu's Mandarin since 2020, and at this point I'm less a loyal customer and more a cautionary tale. For five years I kept thinking, "Maybe this time will be better." Turns out, the only thing that got better was my ability to ignore red flags. The food can be good--sometimes even genuinely tasty--but it's like playing culinary roulette. The same dish never tastes the same twice. It often feels like they just grab whatever ingredients are lying around, toss in some meat, and hope for the best. If you like consistency, you'll find yourself missing other restaurants while you're still sitting in this one. The service is a mood swing. A couple of servers are warm and hospitable, and I appreciate them. But others are rushed, cold, and oddly entitled about tips. I've had the bill slapped down while I'm mid-bite and plates whisked away before I'm done eating. I absolutely believe in tipping well for good service--but dropping food, not refilling drinks, barely checking in, and then hovering for a big tip isn't service; it's pressure with a fake smile. And then there's the rice. I never thought I'd have serious feelings about rice bowls, but here we are. They serve rice in tiny, kid-sized bowls like it's some rare limited-edition collectible. You're expected to stretch that little scoop across a full entrée. For what they charge, it sends a pretty clear message: generosity is not part of the business model. The final straw--and the reason I'm writing this--was my last visit. Shortly after eating there, I ended up with nasty stomach issues and two days of terrible diarrhea. I can't see what happens in the kitchen, but I can connect timing. Once I lose trust in a restaurant's hygiene, it's over. I've only given that "never again" label to one other place in my life. Yu's just earned the second spot. If you're reading this before going, imagine your future self looking back and saying, "Why did I ignore that review?" There are plenty of places where the food is consistent, the staff doesn't rush you or guilt-trip you for tips, rice isn't treated like gold, and you don't spend the next 48 hours regretting your decision. After five years of giving Yu's Mandarin chance after chance, I'm done. If you value your money, time, and stomach, you might want to skip the experiment altogether. read more

Sometimes when I eat at Yu's, the food is delicious. Other times the food is just ok. The spring rolls are half the size they used to be. The Kung Pao Chicken was super salty this last time. Disappointing. The chicken fried rice is always good. Sometimes the servers are nice, other times I feel rushed. I think the restaurant could use an update but they are always busy. Every couple of months my friend and I meet for dinner at Yu's. I just never know what the experience will be like. I wish they were more consistent. read more

I would skip the sesame chicken (very syrupy bland similar sauce over bean threads) and skip the scallops and beef (would be good for someone with a mild palate and the shiitake mushrooms were dense and hard to chew). A beloved Chinese restaurant in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, Yu's Mandarin serves up a large variety of Chinese and Chinese-Korean dishes in a large banquet room. It serves larger parties pretty well, with decent prices and large servings. We've found the food to be good most of the time, and on this Sunday night, it was quite good in quality and quantity, especially for the really low prices. Yu's has multiple locations across the Chicagoland area, but the location in Schaumburg was its first, opening in 1983 (later moving across the street to this location). My wife's family used to frequent it quite a bit, and she was the one that introduced me to Yu's while we were dating, many years ago. My uncle's family now frequents it monthly, so it was a good location to meet up with him on a Sunday night. I made a reservation for 7 for early dinner, and we were able to get one of their round tables with a large Lazy Susan, perfect for dining family style. The food started coming out as it was prepared. We ordered three classic Chinese Korean dishes for us to share: Jajangmyeon (called Peking Noodle on the menu for $10.50), Tangsuyuk (called Sweet and Sour Pork for $16.95), and two Jjamppong (called Noodle Soup w/3 delight for $15.95 each). We added Sesame Chicken ($14.95), Double Pan fried noodles with seafood ($14.95), and double stir fried string beans ($13.50). Everything was really good. My aunt is pretty honest about her food thoughts (she's earned it), and she said all the dishes were good (in quantity and taste), though she wished the jjamppong had more seafood. The jajangmyeon came out with pickled radish and raw white onion, enough for everyone. Conversation came to a halt as all of us concentrated on our food. My daughter and her husband really enjoyed each dish as well, especially the tangsuyuk. I really liked the smokiness of the green beans, and the jjamppong broth was solid, just hot enough for me to induce a sweat but not too hot to make it hurt. Hot tea was constantly served throughout. We had eaten together as a family one year ago, but at the Vernon Hills location (which is still temporarily closed). Glad we went to the OG location this time. read more

07/07/24 - After a day of shopping @ Woodfield mall we were hungry so we went to Yu's in Schaumburg for dinner. We just ate at the Yu's on Milwaukee in Wheeling about 2 weeks ago and found the food to be pretty good and the service exceptional. I have eaten at this location before (why no review?) & found both the food & service to be subpar and slow. We were seated & sat for a good 10 mins before our server came & took our order. Finally the 2 dishes we ordered came about 15 mins later. The Szechwan eggplant (which we loved at the Wheeling Yu's). This dish was subpar at the Schaumburg location & tasted like it was reheated. The other dish we ordered was the salt & pepper smelt which is one of my favorite Chinese dishes. Smelt is a small fish to begin with. The smelt we received were tasty but about 1/2 the size of the smelt we always order? I don't understand why? This smelt was served on a bed of lettuce which seemed like a filler to bulk up the serving size. Again I never had salt & pepper smelt on a bed of lettuce. The server started out as kind of sullen until later in the meal when it came time to pay & receive a tip lol ). I'm not sure why the drop in food & service quality as I have eaten here before & felt like it was better the last time. On a side note the washroom was filthy. Yu's absolutely delivers when it comes to the food. Every dish we tried was packed with flavor, fresh, and clearly made with care. The menu has a great variety, and it's one of those places where you leave already thinking about what you're going to order next time. The kitchen truly deserves a lot of credit because the food alone makes this spot worth visiting. That said, the service could really use some improvement. The staff seemed rude and not very attentive, which took away from what could have been a perfect dining experience. I'm assuming it was the Americans at tables that had the same experience! They take care of their own. If Yu's can match their service to the high quality of their food, this place would easily be a top-tier restaurant. Yu's Mandarin was suggested by my Korean co-worker for jjajamyeon and jjampong and she wasn't wrong! Yu's Mandarin's jjajamyeon and jjampong are delicious, and the portions are generous. Also, Yu's Mandarin make their noodles in house! If you ask, you can get yellow pickled radishes, and onions with black bean paste on the house! The food is decent - depending on what you get but yeah don't bother with the hot n sour soup. The thing that's messed up.... Got a notification saying food was ready, got there and waited 5 minutes to talk to the person working the counter... was told the food wasn't ready. 30 minutes later I asked if the food was ready, he did a quick check and told me it's not ready. Well, as he was looking for other persons food, he found mine, sitting there getting cold for the last 30 minutes. No apologies nothing and they were nice enough to NOT give me any napkins or utensils!! At all of Yu's locations, it's always fun to observe the wok mastery through a large kitchen window. Their combination lunch and dinner specials are a better deal than ordering a la carte. Lunch entrées, which average $10-$12, include a small egg roll, one wonton, fried rice, and a choice of soup or green salad. I ordered the chicken chow mein and barely finished half of the mountainous portion. The hot & sour soup was excellent. The accompanying egg roll and won ton were not quite as tasty. Like so many restaurants nowadays, Yu's is shorthanded and the servers appear harried. We had to flag down our server several times for items that should've been brought or replenished automatically. If you come here at a busy time, be prepared to wait as they do not take reservations. But Yu can cook! read more

I have been dining at Yu's Mandarin in Schaumburg for years. Today I placed a take out order for one of my favorite meals. When I returned home, I enjoyed it though it wasn't up to par. I needed to run errands after that. Within a half hour, I was sweating, my heart racing, feeling light headed, experiencing lower abdominal and lower back pain. I started wondering why I was feeling this way. I called Yu's asking if they used MSG, which they confirmed. I let the young lady know that for the 1st time in years, their food made me extremely I'll. She put me on hold. I called back again letting her know of my concerns, of a chef using too much MSG.
