I finally pulled up to Yummies Cafe on a Thursday afternoon to check a box on my "must-visit" list. Supporting Black-owned spots is always the move, so I was looking forward to seeing how they got down. The space itself is actually a decent size--medium to large with enough seating to where you aren't fighting for real estate against the afternoon rush. It has a good flow to it, which I appreciated. I decided to deviate from the standard soul food lanes and went with the Caribbean Jerk Alfredo Combo, which comes with chicken and shrimp, plus some garlic bread on the side. Now, let's be clear: this is a soul food establishment, not a Caribbean kitchen, and that distinction was definitely present in the flavor profile. Everything was pretty tasty and the portions were solid, but it wasn't the best Jerk I've ever encountered. The sauce had some life to it, but if you're looking for that authentic island heat that makes you see colors, this isn't that. It's a soulful take on a fusion dish, and it does the job well enough for a mid-week craving. Overall, the vibes were straight and the food was good. It's a reliable spot to keep in the rotation when you want a heavy plate and want to keep your dollars in the community. I went to this place Sunday and it is nasty! The bathroom smells horrible. The floors are sticky I was sitting at the bar and they were in and out the kitchen and it was dirty. I mean dirty. Food all over the floor. The grills were disgusting, the floor had water and food everywhere and the owner was in the kitchen smoking a cigar. The trash was full with gnats flying everywhere. Ok Hot'Lanta, there is a new cafe' in town and this one is worth the mention. Let's get into it! We found this place while out car shopping in the area and decided to stop in and check it out. It is in a strip mall like location Riverdale Crossing Shopping Plaza and has a very basic interior with a full bar. What they lack on decor and initial presentation they made up with service and food. This menu is very much traditional ATL flair. Chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, seafood pasta etc. We loved the waffels! So tasty, great texture and for me, perfect consistency with crispy edges and soft center. The chicken wings were seasoned well and not undercooked. If you know you know some places in ATL make under cooking a real problem. The shrimp and grits were awesome! Smooth, creamy grits, the sauce very tasty and the shrimp were not skimpy. Our waitress was very attentive, kept checking in and was helpful making our menu selections. The food here is amazing! If I could give this restaurant 4.5 stars, I definitely would. The only thing keeping this restaurant from receiving 5 stars is the salmon croquette being a little on the dry side. I ordered the fish and grits meal, the Jaz's special with bacon, a side of sausage patties, and a side of beef sausage links. Everything was flavorful and seasoned very well, with the exception of the eggs being unseasoned to provide customers an option to season them to their liking. Let's start with Jaz's special. The eggs are cooked fresh from shelled eggs, which is a huge plus since some restaurants use powered or liquid eggs. The hash browns were cooked nicely with onions and bell peppers; the bacon was thick cut with a nice crisp and a great chew; the pancakes were thick, golden brown, and hearty; and the salmon croquette was enjoyable, although it was slightly on the dry side. The fish and grits platter was just as enjoyable! The fish was tilapia and the breading was crispy and golden brown on the outside with soft, tender, and flaky flesh on the inside. Now I got to tell you all about the grits...oh those grits! I was pleasantly surprised when I noticed that there was a sauce on top of the grits. The sauce had onions and bell peppers in it and had a nice kick. The texture was creamy and definitely not made with instant grits. This was my first time ever experiencing grits paired with a sauce and I look forward to looking up recipes to make it at home. The toast was already buttered nicely and had a light brown toasting on the outside and a soft, fluffy inside. The sausage patties and smoked sausages were nicely cooked and flavorful as well. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of my breakfast. The employees were very friendly and professional, the inside of the restaurant was very clean and modernized, and I look forward to trying items on their lunch menu as well. I really wanted to love Yummies simply because I used to buy plates from Deedee before she had a brick and mortar. This was the first time I had been to the location and I was super excited. It is a nice space there were 3 people working and just a handful of patrons. I walked up to see what the offerings were on the hot bar but decided to order off the grill, as the hot selections seemed like they had been steaming since lunch and it was now 5:30, I passed and ordered lemon pepper wings and fries to go. After a 10 to 15 minute wait I received my order and headed back to McDonough once I drove the 25 minutes home I was so disappointed. The only reason I gave two stars is because I had eaten most of the fries on the drive home and they were good. Crispy hot fresh so when I got inside and took a bite of the wings I was disgusted. The eggs come with cheese and it seems they just add American cheese, no seasonings or anything special. Same thing for the potatoes, they come with peppers and onions but the potato portion is small in comparison -- and the flavor was pretty bitter and bland. The food would just need a bit more intention to make me a repeat customer. The staff are very sweet and patient, their lively energy and input definitely added to my experience. Our hostess was Jessica, who made us an incredible carafe of peach mimosas, and to add to that, she was an amazing host. The environment is family-friendly, clean, and professional. An interesting little family owned spot! The decor is amazing! So modern and fresh. Slightly annoying that you have to pay for refills as per the tacky sign on the fountain drink machine. But overall I will be a repeat patron as they are close by and black owned I've only had breakfast so far--average. Pancakes are a bit tough and def a mix not homemade. Grits bacon and eggs are what you'd expect. Salmon croquette is huge! I could do with a little less breading and a little more seasoning but I'd get it again. This is where I'm conflicted--food is a solid 3 stars but the customer service and friendliness of everyone is a solid 4. I had breakfast from Yummies this morning. You can sit in or you can take your food out. I had grits, eggs, chicken sausage, salmon croquet, pancakes, and roasted potatoes. Everything was delicious. The roasted potatoes had the right amount of green peppers, and onions, and they were seasoned just right. The pancakes were fluffy with a light sweet taste to them. The grits were on point. I tasted some of my daughters shrimp and grits and it was awesome! I wanted to switch plates after I tasted her food but I'll get that the next time. I was able to eat most of my food but not all because there was so much which is a great thing. I have some leftover roasted potatoes and pancakes which I will eat tomorrow for breakfast. My first and last visit. This Yelp review is about the lack of customer service and rude discussion with the presumed owner/manager. On this day I wanted a dine in experience. Yummies appeared to be that type of restaurant. As I waited for the delivery of my food, the manager invited two businessmen and proceeded to have a business meeting in was shot to where I was seated. I stood up to move my meal to a quieter location. Noticing my move he questioned why. I explained that I didn't want to that type of noisy dining experience. I was reading and simply wanted to enjoy my meal quietly. The restaurant was empty so I moved. He took offense and defensively and exclaimed "this is my restaurant and I can do what I want, you can't tell me how to run this restaurant!" Wow! All of that attitude because I changed my seat. In so many words he told me I could leave and not to come back. SMH, I requested a refund and it was given. I'm appalled at this behavior. So very unprofessional and completely unnecessary. My intention was to support a Black restaurant in my community. This happened so quickly I only had a chance to take one bite of my breakfast. I will not ever return there.
