I've been coming to Yorgo's since it was on Plume Street - yes, that is many moons ago. You may be asking yourself why I have yet to write a review. The answer is quite simple. I can be quite the lazy bastard. With that said, Yorgo's is great! A hallmark of a good spot is its line, and there is always one; however, it moves pretty fast. If you've ever been to Bodo's in Charlottesville, it's roughly the same - great bagels, always a croud, many options and very friendly staff. It's funny how much I took this place for granted when I not only worked there for several months, but when I lived so close by. I now live in Washington state, and just revisited Yorgo's on a trip to VA last week. I swear it was somehow better than when I last had it! Maybe the fact that the guy who owned it when I worked there is no longer the owner helped, I'm not sure. Anyway, being that I knew we wouldn't be back for a long time since we live 3000 miles away, I got chicken salad, muenster, and bacon on a sun-dried tomato wrap, AND bacon, egg, and cheese on a blueberry bagel. My boyfriend, this being his first time there, was a little overwhelmed by all the choices and just chose a bagel with herb cream cheese. I wish I could bring yorgos with me everywhere I go so I could get a tempeh blt every morning. The tempeh is moist warm and Smokey. (how do they do it?) The bagel is crispy. The sauce is creamy. As a vegan living in Newport News with very little to offer on the front of "vegan cuisine", Ghent is always the place to go for amazing foods catered to my dietary needs. Yorgo's was a morning adventure with my fiancé to see how their food stacked up. Needless to say I was very impressed! The atmosphere was cute with the muraled wall and handmade mugs to pick up. Our order was a lot since we don't live very close and we were on our way out for a day trip. My fiancé (the vegetarian) got an egg, cheddar cheese and tempeh bacon sandwich on challah with a plain bagel and cream cheese. I got the Peterman (one of the many offered vegan sandwiches) and a plain bagel with vegan cream cheese. We also snagged a tub of cream cheese for the road. Overall, I was very happy! The food was stellar, the service was fast and polite and the small cafe setting was absolutely adorable. I will be traveling back on lazy mornings to Ghent just to get myself a bagel and a tub of that incredible vegan cream cheese. read more

Wow!! I live in NYC, but I was visiting a friend in Norfolk and she suggested, "There's a place that has NY style bagels... want to go there?" and I said, "sure!" But I didn't know until I walked into the building that they had a WHOLE VEGAN MENU!! Honestly, I like this place as much as the many vegan eateries and bagel places I frequent in NYC: the bagels are excellent as-is (and don't need to be toasted), and all their vegan substitutions were excellent. I got the vegan burrito the first day, and when I showed up a day later tried the vegan egg & sausage on a bagel. The vegan egg & sausage on a bagel was the best I've ever had: the "egg" was made from tofu and perfectly flavored (excellent egg substitute that didn't leave me feeling gross afterwards like eggs sometimes do) and the "sausage" was a homemade concoction of deliciousness. Anyway, I couldn't recommend this place more. I was in town for two days and went there twice, and if I'm ever in town again, I'll definitely be back! read more

I'm usually a huge fan of Yorgos, but today I was annoyed and frustrated with them. A beautiful Sunday morning and the only thing my mind was an awesome bagel. So I called to place a to go order, and the lady on the phone promptly told me they weren't taking orders over the phone. Ohhhkkkaaay?? When pressed a little further, the employee stated they were just really busy and didn't have time to deal with orders placed over the phone. Needless to say I was super bummed and a little shocked. It's not like Yorgos is super big. I also didn't want to wait 20-25ish minutes standing around looking awkward, while waiting for a to go order. Frustrated, for sure. I probably won't go back, because I would hate to inconvenience them with my business. read more

You can get a vegan version of practically everything on their menu, from the cream cheese and the mayo to the eggs and sausage -- the house-made vegan sausage will knock your socks off! My favorites include the Peterman (vegan sausage, tofu scramble, red onions, hashbrowns, and vegan cheese in a wrap), the vegan sausage, egg, and cheese on a pumpernickel or sourdough bagel, the roasted red pepper soup, the cookies the size of your head...it's all amazing. The service is friendly, the vibe is funky, the prices are easy on the wallet, and the place is always crowded, because once you try Yorgo's, you will be a devotee for life. I wasn't expecting much and was still disappointed. Since moving to this cesspool city I have had nothing but bad experiences with the food quality. This "New York" style deli had the absolute worse bagels I have ever tasted. You'd be better off getting bagel's from the grocery store. I tried their chocolate chip bagels and half of them tasted like onions. All of them had barely any chocolate chips inside. The only good thing about this place is their cream cheese. Quaint little place, with lots of friendly folks behind the counter. I got the breakfast burrito, with chili and jalapeño wrap.. Awesome!!!! Also got a sesame bagel with cream cheese. Great great breakfast. Will definitely be back. The menu is too big to leave alone, so some more research will just have to be the way it is. A perennial weekend favorite of mine. Yorgo's bagels are top notch, they have a wide variety of choices of bagels and cream cheeses, and I also really enjoy their Deli Egg bagel sandwich. The staff can sometimes be a little neutral, not mean, but not smiling and cheery either. Coffee is not the best either, but it's tolerable. They filled half my iced coffee with sweetener to the point where it was undrinkable, and when I kindly asked for a new one the girl was very rude about it and said it I had a problem I could throw it away and buy a new one. I drove my family from Newport News to Norfolk to give them a taste of one of my favorite restaurants in Norfolk - Yorgos. We arrived just in the nick of time (10+ minutes before they closed)... I know, it was close to closing time, but all we wanted was one bagel and a drink per person. As we got out of the car, they turned off their sign. I tried the door and it was locked. The lights were off inside, but I could see at least three people sitting inside in the dark. As my family piled out of the cars (7 adults in total) an employee stepped out of the opposite door. With her arms folded, she curtly said that they closed at 2:00 instead of 3:00, which didn't make sense because that would mean her and the rest of the staff were hanging out... In the dark... Almost an hour after their shift ended. Yeah... I'm not buying that either. Not only did Yorgos lose the business of 5 locals and 2 tourist today, but they've probably lost our business for good. It really depends on the management to fix the issue of at least one very rude employee and a couple of employees that stood by as Yorgos lost business. Disappointed. read more

This place was hopping on New Years Day. There was a line to the door that moved pretty quickly. There were a lot of great bagel, cream cheese, and sandwich options. I was really looking forward to trying this place out partially due to the great reviews and partially because of how much business they were getting on New Years Day during the brunch hours. The cashier was the first setback. She was just really unfriendly almost seemed irritated. The wait time for the food was moderate considering the crowd. Nobody was periodically walking around to wipe off tables so each one was a little dirty. I thought the sizes of the cups for the hot tea, soda, and soup were pretty small for the cost. I ordered the featured soup which was chicken and rice. It did not have an appetizing color. The vegetables were mushy and the soup was very salty. I also ordered a toasted sesame bagel with herb cream cheese. It was toasted but not warm. There was more than enough cream cheese. I didn't mind scraping some off but it was so cold that it contributed to cooling off the lightly toasted bagel. Overall my food was disappointing. My bf ordered a ham egg and cheese bagel. He said the salt overwhelmed the sandwich. At first he was wondering if it was just heavily seasoned with salt then realized that it was just the cubed ham bits that was extremely salty. We don't think we'll go back. There does seem to be a decent amount of vegan and vegetarian options if that's what you're looking for. read more

A trip to my hometown in the 757 is NEVER complete unless I visit Yorgos. I rarely feel limited as a vegan to begin with, but the options here are amazing. I still need to try a lot more off of the menu, but I am a creature of habit when I find a certain food I like-- I am obsessed with their vegan breakfast burrito! Yorgo's vegan chocolate chip cookies are also a must-try. Road tripping back to NY from NC, with stop in DC. Having left the island before breakfast, the Google and Happy Cow search was on, for an establishment with Vegan options. OMG whatta score this was!!! SO MANY vegan options including bacon egg n cheese sandwiches, vegan cream cheese for your bagel made with 100% organic flour !! 7 different SPECIFICALLY VEGAN wraps, different flavored wraps, and a hefty list of FREE add on, what!?! Side of breakfast potatoes had tofu in it and was perfectly seasoned Our non-vegan family members were equally delighted with their options & selections! The coffee is GOOD!! (I take mine in a cup, no enhancers, but the have soy and almond milk!) This small and HOPPIN' eatery is super cool inside, with a little fenced in area in the lot for outside noshing.
