I can't even remember when I last visited Fairview Mall, let alone their food court. My hubby had stopped by and couldn't stop raving about the improvements over the past few years (which we clearly missed, lol). Naturally I had to stop by. I knew as soon as I saw Yoi Japanese eatery, that's where I was getting my lunch from. I have recently ventured into a number of restaurants for Ramen. It has become my fall/winter comfort food! My oldest shares the same love of all things ramen, so I took her for lunch at CF Fairview just a couple of weeks ago. This place can get crazy busy with long lines and wait times. They have an extensive menu of Ramen, Katsu, Chashu (pork belly) Buns, Karage & Poke Bowls. I was so tempted to try more than just Ramen, but judging the size of the bowl, I knew I would have to save the curiosity for another visit. This is what we ordered: Shoyu Ramen $15.95 - OMG, the broth for this was INSANELY good! I keep hearing from from friends "if you want Ramen, try the restaurants that specialize in it". Nope, for a food court spot, they are doing just fine and oh was it ever delish! My Shoyu Ramen bowl was: Soy based ramen, pork & fish broth, pork belly chashu, soy egg, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, green onion and nori. This was so good, I had my hubby pick up take-out for me just last week. they kept the ingredients conveniently separated so that I could re-heat it at home. They no longer serve fresh fries. They make a very large batch and put them beside the rice and noodles. Disappointing that a fresh and well done fried chicken katsu is served beside soft cold fries now. I did ask if I could get a fresh batch of fries as they were already running low and they agreed. The sandwich is still really good, juicy and moist with a crispy exterior. Sad about the fries. read more

This is my second review of Yoi. It's been a few years since I've been to Fairview mall, so I was curious to know if I'd still enjoy the ramen. It's still good ! The pork slices are flavorful, soup base is mouth watering and the side chicken is juicy and tender. I've become a huge ramen fan in the last few years. Like, I'll go out of my way to sample a new bowl of ramen. So I was obviously intrigued when I heard that Fairview Mall had a ramen joint in its food court and made sampling their wares a top priority. I showed up around 4:00 on a weekday and even though there were three people standing behind the counter, I was forced to kind of stand there awkwardly until someone took my order. (The guy behind the register stared at me for a solid 10 seconds before asking if he could help me. Not the greatest way to treat a customer.) Anyway, I decided to try the Spicy Tan Tan Men ("chicken broth, seasoned minced chicken, bok choi, bean sprout, green onion, seaweed, chili oil"). It's fine. It's basically what you'd think a food-court based ramen would taste like. It's got all the components one expects from a bowl of ramen but with hardly any of the flavor. It's just super bland, basically. And though I specifically ordered something with the word "spicy" in it, there's really hardly anything in the way of heat here. The ingredients used are all fine, although the "minced chicken" is actually big chunks that are impossible to eat in one bite. And given that this bowl cost me about $13 with tax, I was definitely pretty unhappy with my choice, ultimately. (I could've spent a couple of dollars more and gotten one of the city's best bowls at an actual restaurant!) read more

While doing some errands in Fairview mall I started to get hungry and for convenience sake decided to head to the food court to get a bite to eat. I came across this new place and decided after looking it up on Yelp (and the good reviews), that I should try it! For mall food court food, It's pretty decent! I tried the beef gyundon rice bowl. It was $11 i believe with taxes. It's actually a pretty big portion - definitely fill you up. Lots of beef, rice, bok choy and scallions. Flavourful and nicely cooked fresh rice hit the spot when the afternoon munchies hit. I don't think I'd necessarily come here for Japanese food if I wasn't in the mall, but the next time I head to the food court here, this will definitely be my stop. read more

Ramen in a mall food court?! Yummmmm. No more tough decisions in the Fairview food court thinking about what to eat. This will be my go-to. I tried the spicy miso tonkatsu ramen. The ramen is restaurant quality. You can taste the broth is rich with miso flavour. The noodles were a good texture, and the chashu had even layers of fat and meat. Also tried the chashu baos which were simple in terms of ingredients and tasty for that reason. I sampled a piece of their karage chicken, it was so good. Wanted a snack before watching a movie at Fairview and it became a bigger munchie than I expected. "Sushi Shop or YOi?" They were right next to each other and both had good menu items - it was so difficult to decide! YOi was my decision as I have never tried it before (and don't think I've seen it in other food courts). They have a wide selection of food from ramen to appetizers like kaarage, katsu bowls to poke bowls. I rarely have poke bowls and that day I craved one. Sticking with YOi was an absolutely right choice. I ordered a Spicy Mayo Tuna Poke Bowl that includes avocado, cucumber, cabbage, seaweed salad, taro chips, and edamame on top of rice. This was better than I expect and super delicious! I love their sauce, it works really well in the poke bowl though I know it's not teriyaki sauce. Service was decent, the wait is moderate but cashier line up is quick. I definitely would eat this again or try something new on their menu. read more

It's been a couple months since I last visited Fairview mall. I was starving and looking to get something quick like poutine but noticed the new food options. The fake food display drew me in and I decided to get the chicken katsu don. I thought they were going to give me the last chicken katsu that is sitting under a heat lamp but they actually made a fresh one. It looks like they are still new and have some kinks to work out. My order took almost 15mins to be completed. The workers seemed a little confused with their roles. The girl who took my order ended up preparing orders even though there were 3 other people doing it and there were customers just awkwardly waiting in line to place their order lol Presentation wise, the bowl is very colourful. I wish the chicken katsu was placed into the bowl more nicely, but oh well. The bowl tasted even better than it looks. The chicken is hot and juicy and there is a nice balance in flavour. Typically I tend to eat more rice than I do meat, but this time I find myself doing the opposite. Overall, food is pretty good and prices are reasonable. I'm not sure if the long wait and lack of organization is a regular occurrence or if it's because it's near the end of the day and the workers were already stating to clean up. I'll be giving this place a couple more tries regardless! read more

I come here a lot during my lunch time at work. If I'm feeling for rice, a snack, or some noodle soup, this place has it all. This place has your typical Japanese dishes (teriyaki, curry, ramen, poke bowl, etc.) The downsides I find here are that the prices are a bit expensive and it also takes a long time for them to prepare your food. Most of the time my food is warm and not even hot... I guess I keep coming back because I'm always craving Japanese food. I've had a few of their dishes. Chicken teriyaki, spicy tan tan ramen, pork belly rice. Their baos are amazing, I definitely recommend getting both to try. They have a 1 and 1 where you can mix both flavours. Overall, it's a decent place, but I would love for my food to actually be hot especially when it takes them awhile to prepare. read more

I bought my first salmon Poke Bowl here. I really loved it!! The bowl was so big and the salmon pieces were so thick and they put A LOT !!! They have 2 flavors, soy sauce or spicy mayo. I wasn't so sure what i want cuz i never tried it. so i asked the cashier man to make me the soy sauce one but put spicy mayo on the side. He was so nice to let me do so. After a long day at the mall and a potluck event to head to, I was able to grab 2 containers worth of chicken karaage on its own. The staff also gave me two bigger containers full of their spicy mayo that accompanies the chicken with was well needed for the quantity I had. Half a bowl was about the equivalent to one order of chicken karaage with cane up to $6.50 since they could only charge by small container. At the party, the chicken karaage was gone 2 hours in which I was a little sad about cause I was only able to grab two pieces. read more

This is pretty much my go to place for Japanese 'mall' food. So with that in mind..... The pork belly bao is ok. Sometimes the pork is more meat than a balance of meat and fat that makes it so good. But overall not bad and reasonably priced. The Karaage chicken is blah. The coating is thin, the chicken bland. The pork tonkatsu fares better. The shining light here is the ramen. The shoyu soup base is light and flavourful, not overly salty. The noodles are firm with a nice bite to them. Over all a surprisingly good 'mall' ramen. read more

The food here is pretty good for a mall's food court. I choose the salmon rice bowl. For 11.50 I got three pieces of steamed salmon with rice, root veggies & salad. The salmon was cooked fresh right before our eyes. I couldn't even finish all of my food as we also got some potato croquettes. The potato croquettes were delicious too. The only thing is when they cook the protein fresh you have to wait a bit for your food. But I'd buy food from here again. read more

It's been recommended I try the poke bowls here. I've gone a month or so ago and got the spicy salmon and it tasted a bit fishy...and sashimi shouldn't taste fishy. It wasn't that the fish was bad, I think because the greyish skin was left on it. Yesterday I ordered the spicy tuna & salmon bowl and sadly it still had the skin and still had the funky taste. The tuna was great however! Also it wasn't spicy at all...like no spice. Maybe they forgot to add it on. Sadly I did toss most of it because I didn't want to feel sick and gross at work. For $14+ it's not worth it. The shop next door's salmon has none of the fishy taste, and I'm definitely used to raw & cooked fish so I know how it should taste. I've pretty much tried every rice bowl they have. For a food court joint... they've outdone themselves. The literally fill that bowl until it spills over! The combinations of rice and their salads, topped with deliciously seasoned meat is a fantastic choice of lunch or dinner. The balance of carbs, veggies and meat is perfect. The ramen taste was not spot on for me and neither was the noodles. Price point on the higher end. The egg was delicious as was the pork belly. But for a fast food place at fairview not bad. We tried the special for the day the shio tonkotsu ramen. It comes with a potato croquette. The croquette was delicious. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This is pretty good for food court ramen! I ordered the spicy tantan ramen; the flavour was mediocre but it wasn't overly salted like traditional franchises. The noodles were my ideal consistency, a little bit more on the chewy side. My friend ordered the shio ramen which is most likely the best one as it packed a lot of flavour while being light. So surprising and refreshing to have a healthy, fresh food option in a busy food court. Steamed root veggies , salad, rice & salmon teryaki - made before your eyes.
