Yoga on Beacon is in a beautiful old building with loads of windows that provide natural light. It has recently changed owners, and the place has a refreshed clean feel. Yoga teacher was very welcoming and chatted with us as we waited for the class to start. It was a shorter class 45 minutes, but still got us sweating and flowing through a series. read more

This is such a lovely studio. I teach here on occasion, as much as I can honestly because I love the atmosphere so much, and I couldn't say more kind things about YoBe. The owners are so generous and they truly embody the spirit and energy of yoga (more so than I've seen in the Seattle area). The space is very calm and zen, perfect for establishing mental clarify as well as progress in one's physical body. I've been a yoga studio drifter for years... until I found YoBe. I've been to many studios where they've either lacked in one department or another.. either class sizes are too large/crowded or a little ~too~ intimate, or were too focused on the physical aspect of yoga that the spiritual components were neglected etc. But YoBe is awesome because not only are their class sizes just right -- with usually about 10 or less students in a class. Their instructors are awesome because the teaching style is more of a holistic focus that touches on the mind+body+breath connection, which I think is missing from the more popular studios. Definitely be sure to check out Kathleen's flow classes on Monday/Wednesdays @ 4:30PM. Absolutely the best! My only gripe really is that I wish there were more class times available, but for such a small studio, it's understandable. read more

I almost don't want to recommend this place, as what is so lovely is how neighborhoody and nurturing it is. No competition for floor space like yoga classes at the gym. All the props are available and they have a rope wall which could seem medieval, but rather stretches you quite pleasantly. The urban sounds around the studio actually become part of the meditation, which is one of my favorite parts. UPDATE - under new ownership, and now remodeled. If you're looking for a yoga studio in the neighborhood (Beacon Hill/Columbia City), you can't do better than YoBe. I've been coming to classes for about a year now, and I wholeheartedly recommend it. The instructors are all very kind and welcoming, yet they also give you space to do your own thing. Dee, who owns the studio, is probably my favorite teacher. Not to sounds too New Agey here, but she just has this really lovely and calming aura about her. She incorporates music into her sessions, and she always has some wise opening and closing thoughts which I really appreciate. Shannon is also great. The space itself is modern and clean. They've got all the props you need and yoga mats too if you forget yours. There is one bathroom/changing room. Certain classes are more crowded than others, but I rarely ever feel wedged in. Being that the studio is located on Beacon Ave., the traffic noise can get a little bit distracting sometimes. The only thing I'd change about this place is for it to be located on a quieter street! Parking is super easy. read more

came back to yoga last fall after a long hiatus. I found the instructors were wonderful. The atmosphere at this place is welcoming, comfortable. No one is pressuring you to do things that are too hard for you and the instructors are constantly telling us how to protect our bodies from strains while doing yoga. I love the cork floors and location location location. I have had 3 different instructors now and they are all wonderful. I have been to some other yoga studios and have never before found the warmth and serenity that i have found here. read more

I had my first class at YoBe on Monday - what a great experience. From the small, funky shaped practice space to the storefront location, everything about this place challenged me to really practice YOGA (as in the holding of stillness in spite of life and all of it's distractions), not just look pretty holding poses in a sound(world)proof room. There is no lining up in the orderly rows and hiding out in the back of the room here. I was impressed by how mellow the introductory experience was: aside from filling out the standard release and health form there was no pestering about how long I'd practiced or where. I felt very accepted and welcome there, and it went a long way to assuage the usual round of new studio jitters I usually suffer from. The studio was clean and bright, very good use is made of the space. They have ample props if needed, but the class really didn't rely on props either. I found the flow class to be challenging even without an abundance of heat or dramatic postures and I could feel my heart rate climbing as I broke a sweat during the second set of sun salutations. A highlight for me was getting to end the class with a partner back-bend suspended from the strap wall. I've never done anything like that in a yoga class and it was such a playful and fun practice (and fantastic stretch) that I ended the class with a really buoyant feeling. A few notes about the studio: Due to the rather 'T' shaped space you may be facing people, standing close to a columns and/or at unusual angles to the teacher. The absence of mirrors asks you to really feel the posture for correctness rather than a reliance on how it looks. For that you can trust a qualified and thorough guide (Eiric was fab) to help you with body mechanics of the asnas. Your practice may also be challenged by noise from Beacon outside the storefront location, but I found it an excellent reminder that the practice of yoga is really about becoming "bulletproof" to all of life's distractions and not getting caught up in the "suffering" - as Eiric aptly put it. So while this place may not be for the super amenity folks (showers, big dressing rooms, super modern sound proof studio etc.) I found the skilled instruction, small class size and uniqueness of the studio itself well worth what some might consider a sacrifice. Definitely my new favorite Seattle yoga studio! read more

I've been attending yoga classes at Yoga on Beacon for more than ten years. Dee, the owner, is a terrific instructor and adapts for all levels. There are many kinds of classes and instructors to suit everyone's needs. And it is a small, neighborhood business! Special shout out to Abiola who teaches a challenging Sunday morning class. Kathleen is the most knowledgeable and experienced yoga instructor I have ever had. Having owned her own studio and dance company for years, and studied with many of the yoga greats, she provides an incredibly varied, challenging, and transformative experience in EVERY single class. It blows me away that Kathleen can continually be so creative and intuitive, yet structured, class after class. Be ready to flow in many different ways every time you come. (I've been coming to her class once a week for about 3 years, and she still constantly surprises me with new postures, instructions, and flow sequences). I love Kathleen's classes and feel so fortunate to have discovered her as a teacher. read more

OK OK, I used to be a devout fan of Shakti Vinyasa, but I have been converted away from Ballard to a less condo-yuppie saturated environment in Beacon Hill. Yoga on Beacon is a tiny studio, but it is absolutely gorgeous and always clean and never smelly. Another plus about Yoga on Beacon: they offer evening classes at 6pm and 7:30pm for us workin' stiffs. Shakti Vinyasa is a great studio, but like a lot of yoga studios, it seems to cater to the non-working types who can make it to a class at 9:30am or 5:30pm on a week day. I also got tired of having to miss the classes that I could make it to due to the very expensive yoga "workshops" which interfere with their regular class schedule. So now Yoga on Beacon is my new favorite (especially since it is so close to where I live). I love the personal attention I get from the instructors because the class sizes are so much smaller than what I have grown used to at other studios. I want to keep this place a secret so class sizes stay small, but I also want this studio to prosper because it is so great.. so check it out! read more

I recently started taking classes at Yoga on Beacon after a several year break. During that time I bounced around between different studios and various gyms around the city, feeling generally unsatisfied with the quality and depth of practice offered. Now I'm back and SO happy getting to learn from Eiric who somehow makes all his classes interesting and fun and challenging. I've taken classes with several different teachers at YoBe and they've all been excellent and given great hands on adjustments. Love the studio, love the teachers. read more

I love this yoga studio! Dee is truly a superb instructor, she helps with positioning, breathing, focus, etc. She has really helped me find what works for my body - and others'. Also, she has a sense of humor and a tendency to create a community-like class, where people want to chat and hardly ever feel awkward, while, of course, maintaining the inherent calm and soothing feelings needed for yoga. The only complaint I have is the small size of the studio. I've been to a few studios, and YoBe is definitely a fave. read more

This is a great studio with fabulous teachers and an entire wall for hanging belts. If you want to experience a truly enlightening spiritual and physical experience, take a class from Eiric. They also have an entire wall for working with straps that hook in at 2 different heights. I have also gone on a retreat with Dee and Eiric that was a lot of fun. read more

I really enjoyed the classes here. The instructors that I've had were very welcoming, warm, and would gently correct postures or suggest alternatives if they saw that you were having problems. The studio is a nice cozy space and is kept at a comfortable temperature. It was great to find a studio that hasn't jumped on the hot yoga craze! I moved to another neighborhood in Seattle and haven't been back to YoBe as it's not convenient to my new home, but I'm considering returning because I haven't found another yoga studio that I've enjoyed as much. read more

Yobe is my favorite yoga studio in Seattle. The environment is inclusive and attractive and the teaching is top-notch. The teachers are decicated and long-time yogis and the variety of classes really suits me. The classes are true to their descriptions, a basics class is comprehensive but basic. The flow classes are really challenging. read more

I love Yoga On Beacon! Dee , the owner, has created an environment that is very welcoming and inclusive. It is a terrific community space reflecting the diversity of the neighborhood. It is lovely to see old and young, experienced and novice, all finding a place to explore various aspects of yoga. There isn't the "look at me and how deep I can take the pose" competitive attitude of some other studios. It doesn't matter how you dress and you can actually laugh in class! Yoga on Beacon is a place to call home. I always feel very welcome when I'm at the studio. The studio has some of the best teachers in Seattle. They have a full approach to yoga, not just concerned with the physical body, but also the spiritual, mental, and emotional. The classes are thorough, well thought through, integrated, and have a great flow. Also all the teachers are different, so it is fun to try different styles and approaches. I started yoga here, I was horribly out of shape and overweight. Dee made me always feel welcome and safe as I gradually reintegrated body, mind and spirit. There is no pretentious "scene" there, just wonderful, welcoming instructors and fellow students. This is a wonderful yoga studio. My favorite is the Rest & Renew class, but all of them are fantastic. Dee and her staff are kind and compassionate. They are experienced and knowledgeable and so bendy! In each R & R class, the teachers gently push on your back or leg and help you ease into a good stretch. It's like a mini massage & I love it! After I moved to the area I was trying out different classes and teachers to see which one I liked. I enjoyed the basics and flow classes I had attended, but on my fourth visit I took a flow class from Eiric that was extremely uncomfortable. I believe it was his last class before he took a trip so he wanted to do something unusual, so our class (I had never met any of these people) was required to stand in a circle and then one by one stand in the middle and have everyone say "I love you (fill in name)" to you. And then we did it twice in a row! After we did our yoga practice, it was also suggested that we hug at least three of our classmates, so at this point I just left. The entire process took up over half of our class time and was definitely not what I was anticipating to do at a yoga class or what I believed I was paying for. It was very unnecessary, awkward and the situation was basically impossible to get out of. Not sure if this teacher is still at Yoga on Beacon, but this experience definitely made me think twice about coming back here and just wanted to give anyone who isn't down for a mushy, faux-spiritual waste of time a heads up! read more
