I became a fan of Breathe after nearly 2 years with CorePower. What makes BHY stand out are the people that Amber attracts. I've enjoyed classes with nearly all the instructors, who all have their own unique style. With Breathe, I don't feel like I'm competing with anyone. We're all here to support one another and that's clearly evident in the Breathe philosophy. I have been to a lot yoga studios since moving to Seattle and I think I found my studio! I was looking for a place that offers difficult yet centering yoga classes, and teachers that help you grow while understanding your limits. This place has all of this for me. The staff is super great and welcoming, the classes are a great workout! I especially like the power vinyasa and total body Pilates. The breathe 60 and 90 are not my style, but a good workout. There is no parking lot, but I've never had a problem with finding on street parking. read more

Over the holidays I had the excellent fortune of visiting Breathe a couple of times, courtesy of my dear Kathleen M. What a lovely studio! I've been practicing yoga for almost ten years, and have spent time on the mat in many a different class with many a different teacher. Amber taught both classes I took here, and she was wonderful: tough yet encouraging, attentive to each student's individual body, and constantly aware of alignment and safety. Having gone through a 200-hour teacher training myself, I have a new appreciation for how difficult it is to teach well, and how important it is to keep your students safe in their bodies. Amber was a pro, and if she's any indication of the teaching quality at Breathe, you'll be in good hands. The studio culture was so friendly and welcoming, a nice change from so many studios where the yoga "community" is actually a small clique. Everyone seemed to know each other, yet I didn't feel on the outside of an in group. If you're a beginner in yoga, or new to Seattle, I'd highly recommend Breathe if only because you won't feel intimidated on your first visits, and that's a huge part of the work of finding your yoga home. The yoga studio itself is clean and lovely; it's a hard vinyl floor (no sweaty carpet!), and while the room's hot, it isn't HOT. Changing rooms are available, and there's one shower in the women's room plus shelves and hangers for your bags and clothes. So, this is a studio you can hit on the way to work if you don't have the time to return home for a shower. The asana sequence for most of the classes is from the lineage of Bikram so quite similar (no flow, holding poses, unchanging in the sequence itself), yet they do also have a few flow classes on the schedule. Times abound, and a great benefit of a Breathe membership is that you can take class at any of their studios (this one in West Seattle, plus two other locations in SLU and Capitol Hill). For this one, a final perk is that Chaco Canyon's right next door so it takes no effort to procure some amazing juice or other treats post-class! read more

I have been to all of the hot yoga studios in the West Seattle, Renton, and Burien areas and I have to say Breathe is BY FAR my favorite out of any place that I have ever been to. A few years ago, I was a hardcore hot yoga junkie, but then life happened and although I still managed to go every now and again, I definitely wasn't practicing as much as I would have liked. So, I decided to stop the excuses and find my way back to hot yoga. The studio is clean, new, and very cute. It is small, but not cramped and I love the flooring. A lot of places I have been to have weird carpet and during floor poses, I can actually smell the funk that has accumulated in the fibers, but this is definitely not the case here, which I really appreciate! Also, the room is not as hot as some other places, but still hot enough to get a great sweat going (I peeked at the thermostat and saw that it was 94 degrees in the room). Because the heat was not so intense, I was able to focus more on really pushing my body in the poses instead of worrying about "oh godddddddd, I feel like I'm going to pass out and DIE!!!" Seeing as how it has been a while since I have gone to a session, I was a little apprehensive, but the class I took with Amber could not have been better. I have never received so much help and guidance in a yoga class. It almost felt like an individualized session even though it was a packed house. At a lot of other studios, if I made a mistake, the instructors' comments would make me feel as though I was being reprimanded instead of helping me to progress, but that wasn't the vibe here. I felt like she was concerned about making sure I got the most out of the poses without injuring myself or overdoing it, and I really appreciated it when she would come over to help with my posture or to help me push myself further. So, in response to other reviews, if you notice the studio is called "Breathe Hot Yoga," NOT Bikram Yoga. It even states on their website that they do not follow the traditional Bikram style. From my experience, the 90 minute class I went to was closely based on the traditional Bikram format, with maybe three or four poses taken out and replaced with something different/nontraditional, which I did not mind at all. I actually preferred the "new" poses. I also attended a 60 minute session and although it is shorter, it was, in my opinion, way more intense. Chris was the instructor for that one and he was also awesome. I have been to some studios where the instructors were just plain mean, but that is definitely not the case here. I feel like all of the instructors genuinely care about helping the participants achieve their INDIVIDUAL capabilities. My only real complaints would be that there isn't an actual parking lot for Breathe, but I've managed to find street parking without a problem, so I guess walking won't kill me :) And, I wish they could offer more mid-day classes, or perhaps a 60 minute mid-day class, which would be perfect for squeezing in while the kiddo is at school. I plan to use the rest of my beginner package and then purchase a regular monthly membership. I really like Breathe Hot Yoga and have had excellent experiences here so far. You should definitely check it out and try a 90-minute class with Amber if it is your first time or if it's been a while since you have practiced. Also, I was late on my first day here, but I appreciate how accommodating they were. I definitely wouldn't have been disrespectful and interrupted if class had already started, but I got there RIGHT at the starting time and because the instructor had not entered the room yet, they let me come in for class. read more

I had a horrible experience at Breathe in West Seattle- very unfortunate. I've had limited experience with hot yoga and attended a 90 minute class. about an hour into the class I was feeling pretty uncomfortable and by an hour and fifteen minutes in, I made the decision to pack it up. I didn't want to disturb the class but my body was telling me it was time to go, so I quietly got up, rolled up my mat and left the room. I barely made it out of the room when the instructor came out after me and insisted I go back in! He was really aggressive and disruptive. He also said I needed to come back in for "safety reasons"...I know I was light headed because, for some odd reason, I went back in (against my better judgement). I don't expect to go to a yoga class and feel like I'm being held hostage. No thanks. **Update: I've changed my rating from 1 to 3! the owner of Breathe completely remedied the above situation! She did all the right things including: talking to the instructor, refunding my money and even gave me 1 month free unlimited sessions to win back my business. While I do not excuse the instructor's behavior I am pretty sure he'd choose a different approach in the future. I am very impressed by the level of customer service and the accountabilityy taken by the owner. I will go back. the one piece of advice I have for anyone trying Breathe or any other hot yoga for the first time is: DRINK LOTS OF WATER BEFORE YOU GO AND WHEN EVER YOU NEED IT, DURING THE CLASS. My 1st hot yoga experience. Thanks to Groupon for 10 classes for $20 this was a great deal! The teacher was a guy (forgot his name) and he was super attentive knowing that this was my very 1st class. I didn't feel pressured to keep up with everyone else. The location is very easy to find and there is street parking available around the corner. The studio is small and the classes are small too. I went to a class around 4pm during the week and maybe 10 people total attended. I would recommended if this is your 1st class to do the 45 or 60 minutes to start. read more

It's 'hot yoga' but not the hottest out there, which I find to be an advantage. You get the benefit that heat is on stretchy muscles, without the torturous fire where you struggle to not pass out and drown in a puddle of your own sweat. Breathe hot yoga is can be good for beginners to yoga, they concentrate on the early simple stretches and focus on helping each individual do it right. After that, I dunno. I'm new to yoga. read more

I tried Breathe because I can't beat the location. However, I'd rather drive miles and miles to a 5-star yoga studio than experience Breathe one more time. The instructors are too mechanical. The studio isn't hot enough. There is NO music and the energy in the room is less than inviting. I purchased the "new student" package back in 2012 and attended one class. I was so put off that I didn't return. One year later, I decided to try Breathe again and so I bought a 10-class Groupon. This time I was excited because they now offer Cali Yoga which I was hoping was more similar to the kind of yoga I like. Again, I wasn't moved to return. Today, I called the studio to inquire if it was possible to "gift" the remaining 9 classes that are sitting unused. Not only is the answer NO due to policy but I felt chastised for even thinking of asking. According to policy, there should have been no way I could have bought the Groupon since I had purchased the new student package back in 2012. She then informed me that the computer shouldn't have even let me buy the Groupon and that at least I was able to use 3 out of the 10 classes. First of all, it's not my fault that their was a glitch in their computer system and second of all, I only used 1 class out of my 10-class package. Somehow at the end of the conversation I felt like I had done something wrong when clearly I had not. When I hung up the call, I first felt angry that I couldn't pass on the remaining 9 classes to a friend. But now, I wouldn't wish a Breathe Hot Yoga experience onto anyone. read more

I attended Katie HZ's class on Friday morning. It's an hour and half class Bikram style, Ghosh yoga. I'm not a Bikram yogi practitioner but I love this class! The length is perfect and her instructions are simple and understandable. The room is so hot so expect to sweat a lot (don't forget a towel). She reminds us to take water breaks and hydrate well. I feel refreshed and detoxed afterwards. The studio has a window to the sidewalk which I thought would be distracting but the natural light feels good and I'm so deep in the practice I haven't been distracted once. I am a hot yoga junkie and have tried several of the studios around Seattle and Bellevue, with the most recent being "Breathe." It is a great addition to West Seattle! For anyone who has done hot yoga or is looking to get into it, check this place out. They have conventional bikram and 60 minute classes (for those of us who can't fit that much time into our busy lives). The studio is new and clean, and shares a bathroom with Chaco Canyon. A couple of things about the classes: the room is hot but not nearly as hot as other studios I have been to. For newbies, this is probably a good thing but I am used to a much hotter room. The class was pleasant and I enjoyed the teacher, but it was not much of a challenge with the moderately hot room. I suppose for people getting into hot this is preferable. Don't get me wrong, you still will get a good detoxifying sweat going. Lastly, the fact that I can see out of the windows at people walking by bothered me. Some of them were looking in which was distracting. I would recommend candles and shutting the blinds maybe? Also, they only have two morning classes on Sat and Sunday, but classes throughout the day during the week. To conclude, Breathe is without a doubt a great addition to West Seattle. Try it out if you are in the neighborhood. read more

I am SO happy that I discovered this gem in West Seattle! I started eating better in January and was losing weight at a healthy clip but I knew I needed to MOVE. I commute at least two hours a day and needed something I could ease in to that fit into my schedule. So- that being said I went to my first class on March 17 and have not looked back- I did Bikram in the past but the stinky rug, Nazi instructor and the fact that I felt totally out of place made me quit going. Who wants to feel terrible when they are trying to improve themselves? The studio is wonderful and clean and let me tell you how I love the instructors! Gina- you are a gem! Always so welcoming and all of your advice and encouragement makes me keep coming back! I feel that I have improved SO much because of your technique and hands on help. Chris- Totally different teaching style but just as wonderful! I always feel refreshed and powerful when I leave your class- I like that you push me each time. I feel powerful, full of oxygen, and amazing when I leave your class. So in a nutshell- I'm hooked and happy to say I now love how strong and flexible my body is! I am still losing some weight but that is not the total goal now- healthy and de-stressed are now a big part of my life..... Great job BHY- I'm hooked and will tell everyone I know how fab you all are...(of course it might get more crowded but who cares! read more

I absolutely LOVE this yoga studio! The classes are all really great and the instructors are very helpful. I personally love the Pilates classes, it's a mix of repetitive movements and HITT! It's a little expensive but I think it's completely worth it! Definitely give this place a try!! read more

Breathe Hot Yoga in West Seattle is not my thing. By nature, I am athlete and someone who enjoys vigorous exercise. I chose to take the Cali Yoga class because its class description sounded more along the lines of a vinyasa flow class, which is my preference. In general, what I love about yoga is the awareness that it brings to both my body & mind. Unlike other ways that I like to workout, it gives me a chance to slow down and turn thoughts inward, while also being able to reap the strength & flexibility benefits that yoga offers. Breathe did not meet these standards or preferences for me. As a career, I am a fitness professional - having taught many different practices and modalities all over Seattle & the East side for various companies, before starting my own business. I have a deep appreciation for instructors [and studios] who pay special attention to technique & form and who tackle classes as a chance to make an impact on their student's lives & health vs. being there to get their own workout in. It is my humble opinion that instructors should NOT be doing the entire class with their students, but rather, taking the time to connect with clients, make hands-on adjustments and let them FEEL what's going on in their bodies. The instructor I had talked the entire class with no music. Nadda, none. I couldn't even turn my thoughts inside my body to absorb & enjoy the postures because he was constantly cueing and talking alignment. And like I said, I truly APPRECIATE an instructor who knows the body well enough to understand the importance of alignment & form, but this was over the top. And he talked so fast -- you barely got what he just said before he was moving on. And then, he took his shirt off. Sorry, but not okay in my book and inappropriate for an instructor to do so, regardless of heat. I was DOING the class and had both shirt & shorts on...oh wait, that's right, he did the whole class too. Yoga is an amazing experience, one that I think can touch clients in ways other exercise modalities can't. Can teach clients about their bodies in a way you can't experience in other classes. But I didn't get that at Breathe. There was no mood, no connection, no rhythm, no music and hardly any individual attention [instructor made 2 adjustments throughout the whole class, even though he repeatedly stated that the class was half full of newbies]. I really wanted to like it, since it's in West Seattle & just down the street from my house, but unfortunately, it didn't work out like that... read more

I study at the top studios in New York City, and after visiting Seattle last spring I must say.......BREATHE Yoga in West Seattle was the most unbelievable yoga experience I've ever had. The teachers I had were unbelievable; personalized, attentive, and on point 110%. None of the other 4 studios I attended in Seattle even came close; and in NYC, forget about it: if this place existed in NYC you would never even get a reservation! I'm going to my "yoga spa" in the upper West Side today, and all I can think of is how I wish I could trade it for the teaching I got at Breathe. I have practiced at Breathe Hot Yoga West Seattle since October 2013. I was newly pregnant at the time and continued to practice there throughout my pregnancy (and currently, postpartum). As a practitioner of Bikram Yoga for 10 years prior, I found the Breathe series to be a natural transition and perfect fit for me during pregnancy; just as intense but with a little less heat. I have never felt so welcomed, supported, or inspired by a yoga studio and yoga community. The instructors are great and they have a number of classes to choose from. read more

Between the Cali-Yoga and the Bikram yoga classes offered at Breathe, I find that I get an all-around body workout that is both physically and mentally challenging and fulfilling. This is the first yoga studio where dialog with the instructors is encouraged; students are therefore motivated and inspired. read more

I can't say I'm overly thrilled about this yoga studio, though part of it is my personal preferences. I bought a Groupon for a 10-class punch card and I though I didn't use all of the punches, I just can't force myself to continue going to a place I really don't enjoy. First, parking is tricky. I can never seem to find a spot close by and while I don't mind the walk, I mind the fact that it takes longer and I always feel rushed to get to class on time despite leaving work/home with plenty of time. The studio is also right next to a cafe and shares pipes. Hearing running water during class was distracting. I also had the unfortunate luck of being near a smoker. Another time I kept smelling ketchup. Unknown if it was because of the cafe or someone had spilled their breakfast on their yoga clothes. I realize it's not Breathe's fault, but it does dissuade me from returning. Admittedly, Breathe never claims to be Bikram. But I must say that Bikram is my preferred style of yoga, hence why I don't think this studio is for me. All of the above would warrant a 3-star, but what takes one off is the people. Most of the staff and instructors I've encountered here are polite enough, but it feels very mechanical. I also felt like one instructor was a little condescending because I was new. I may be new to the studio, but I've been practicing yoga off and on for years and regularly for the last few months. I may not be the best, but I'm certainly not a newbie. I guess sometimes you just don't click with people. read more

I love this place!! I've taken almost every kind of class, the sculpt classes, hot Pilates, yin, the bikram style yoga classes, even a sound bath once. They always challenge me and are super enjoyable. Every instructor is kind, energizing, and attentive. I loved having an unlimited membership. I'm moving to another area of the city and won't be in close proximity to any of studios but will likely get a class pack to stop by every once in awhile. read more

I have tried several different yoga styles and studios in the past and the the Cali Yoga at Breathe is by far my favorite. This was highlighted when I got busy and stopped going for several months in the fact that I missed the practice in very noticable way while not going to the class. I'm back to class regularly and very glad to be back and feeling the benefits once again. It is just an hour of exercise but it sure makes big difference. Travis teaches the class in a way that works very well for my style. He gives pointers and underlying philosophy is small spurts. It is never too much and little bits of awareness that I find helpful. He helps with adjustments and alignment but not in an overbearing way as I continue to figure things little by little with ongoing practice. The hot yoga class are a nice additon when Cali classes don't fit into my schedule and all the instructors I've ever had there have been extremely positive. read more

Sloppy and lazy instruction. I went to this studio through a Groupon and I almost left the class mid way through. The class was 1.5 hrs and followed a Bikram-like session - only it wasn't because the instruction was neither precise nor engaged. This would have been a frustrating class for an advanced yoga practitioner and not at all informative for a beginner. I had to look around at what the other students in the class were doing because his instruction was so poor. Acoustics are horrible too and the instructor sort of mumbled so it was difficult to hear much. After a Bikram class, I'm exhausted, wrung out, worked from head to toe and completely exhilarated. I left this class tired, completely unfullfilled and frustrated that I ended up spending $30 on a groupon because it ended up being for one class and I'll never come back. read more

The instructors are really conscientious about protecting against injury & meticulous about good form while still embodying a calming & meditative class environment. I can't say enough good things. I have been doing various types of hot yoga for years. I was up in Seattle and decided I wanted to take a class and found this studio. I was so impressed with the studio and teacher that I signed up for classes even though I live an hour away. Packages (except coupons) NEVER expire. How awesome is that?? I learned so much in one class (especially about appropriate posture and alignment). I can't wait until the kids are back in school so I can get back up and further improve my practice. read more

I was really excited to use my LivingSocial deal for Breathe Hot Yoga when they first opened in West Seattle last year since I was living in that area during that time. The staff was very warm and welcoming and the studio was pretty clean. The temperature in the studio isn't as hot as other hot yoga studios, which is something I'm not used to but it didn't seem to bother me too much. I attended a few classes that were taught by different instructors and I felt like their teaching instructions were very scripted and rehearsed. Both instructors that I had worded their instructions exactly the same way and made us do the exact same poses in the same order in every class. Because of that, I didn't feel as relaxed or challenged as I normally do while doing yoga since everything was so predictable. I prefer more variety instead of just doing the same routine over and over again. Overall, it is probably a good place to go to if you're a beginner and like sticking to a regular routine. read more
