I am very new to reformer pilates (had only done Mary Windsor's dvd previously) and was honestly scared to try something that looked akin to the torture device in The Princess Bride. I ended up being SO pleasantly surprised by how gentle this ended up being on my body while also making me sore enough the next day to know I was working out harder than I even knew. Classes are pricey, but worth it to me IF u can get scheduled as classes book up well in advance. Love using equipment, too...my 1st experience. I left on vacation for a month and was able to put my membership on hold til I got back. Back office pretty responsive to my questions, too. I recently started getting private duet sessions and physical therapy at the mount baker location and it's been such a positive experience so far. I feel really good about learning the fundamentals and the level of correction that the instructors make. They super encouraging and also provide really great visual descriptions for the moves, which I think is really handy if you are a beginner like me. This study is terrific and I'm excited to continue my Pilates journey! Pilates classes at Vitality in Mt Baker offer a lot of variety, both within an instructor's classes and especially by attending classes with multiple instructors. I love Melanie's classes on Sundays, where she challenges us to set goals to increase strength. Bree's classes are consistently challenging and creative, building endurance. Megan's early morning classes are notably active, a great way to wake up before my work day. Finally, Kelli concentrates on flexibility, making sure we stretch out everything that's tight. I typically see 2-3 a week but vary the schedule to see each one, because I enjoy aspects of all of their classes. Awesome! read more

I've been taking classes at the Mount Baker studio for over ten years. I have found the high quality of instruction to be consistent over the entire decade, especially from Melanie. A newer instructor, Bree, is also excellent. As I've aged (I'm now 74) and have experienced some injuries and surgeries, Vitality has always had something to offer, whether gentler classes or personalized modifications. The classes are small, and after surveying a number of other studios, an excellent value. You do, however, have to be diligent about scheduling in advance! read more

I have been a student at Mt. Baker Vitality Pilates for around six years. I have only great things to say about the instructors and classes. Every class is different, well-paced and the instructors give kind, helpful feedback. The office people are pleasant and helpful, too. The venue is neat and clean. I recommend Mt. This review is not about the quality of pilates instruction at this place but about the scam that they have set up around monthly charges. I bought into a monthly plan late last year. However, the small class size, the rush among customers to book classes as soon as they become available, and the in-frequent classes for a certain level meant - that I couldn't reserve the required 9 classes a month. It is really hard for a person with a normal job to accommodate this into their schedule. However, what I did not realize is that there is a fine print that makes you sign up for a monthly subscription for this place when you sign-up. And a few months later I realized that they have been happily charging me $200 a month for nothing. They do not allow you to cancel your "subscription" online. No amount of phone calls (unanswered) or texts (also unanswered) will let me cancel. Today after paying almost $2000 for nothing, I caught someone on the phone and cancelled. This is a complete scam if there ever was one. In today's day and age you cannot make cancelling a "gym-like" membership this hard. read more

I've been going to this studio for 3+ months now, it's one of the few times that I've stuck with a New Year's resolution of creating a work out routine! I love how close by it is, the instructors are really nice, and they have a good spread of early morning / late evening classes. They have a good online class sign up, and you start in a beginner class (New Equipment Class) then you get to decide when to increase your class difficulty by signing up for Intermediate, then Moderate, then Intense classes. read more

IMO this is the best Pilates studio in town. The instructors are wonderfully trained, most with extensive dance backgrounds and the variety of teaching styles ensures you'll find the right class for you. I started at ground zero having almost no Pilates experience and this place really opened my eyes and awakened my body to a truly fantastic method of exercise thru movement, breath work, and mind/body connection. Plus they have reformers, chairs, bodhi.. lots to keep to working without any routine ruts. There's even a massage therapist on site as well. It's an inspiring place to workout. read more

This is a great place to get a challenging, effective workout whatever your level of fitness. The instructors are well versed in different types of bodies and physical conditions, including hypermobility. In fact, I came to Vitality because I had heard in a local patient group that at least some of their teachers were very familiar with hypermobility and Ehler Danlos syndrome, with which I had been recently diagnosed. When I started working with Vitality Pilates instructors, I was battling long Covid and couldn't stand up during a workout; couldn't do a single full sit up; couldn't raise my arms above my head for any meaningful amount of time; couldn't hold a plank for more than a few seconds. I couldn't do more than a few reps of something without stopping to rest or to deal with a cramp. When I was told to activate my core, it felt like reaching for a muscle that just wasn't there. Working with Vitality's instructors helped restored much of my spinal health and built muscle to help me function in my daily life. In less than a year, this studio has helped improve my posture, fitness, sleep, balance, and strength. I'm also able to do advanced work in the Pilates curriculum, including holding long planks and working out while upright. This studio has made a huge difference in my recovery. I bought a Groupon. I went to two sessions before asking for a refund. The Mt. Baker studio smells like mildew, so avoid it if you have allergies like I do. The Ravenna studio is better, at least for the mildew, but it has some other bad smell that I couldn't identify. The place feels like an instructor mill, so I imagine quality can vary widely. The first instructor that I tried seemed like she knew her stuff. The second one didn't, at all, and I got nothing from the workout. I want a good session, not bad smells and hit-or-miss instructor quality. I really wanted to like this place, but I couldn't. read more

Cancellations after cancellations. Three of them. By them. I really want to like this place. I think the staff are courteous, the teachers are nice, but I've had some series of cancellations that tested my patience. First, I set up an appointment for a walk-in class. Having no experience in pilates at all, I explained my situation with the front desk. She ok-ed me to join one of the ongoing series. When I arrived, they thought that the series might be too advanced for me so they canceled the appt and gave me a 30-min intro talk/try out instead. That went ok and the teacher who gave me a walk-through was very friendly and professional. Next, I signed up for five 1-hr private lessons, agreed on the time and paid everything in advance. Guess what, 30 minutes before my scheduled class, I got a call that my class got canceled since the teacher that they assigned me to did not reply back. This was the second cancellation. I played along and let them reschedule me with 1 free class, taught by one of their student who were in her certification class (NOT a full-pledged instructor). She was friendly but young and inexperienced in teaching. Simply put the instruction from this student was really not top-rated. I went on with the rest of the 5 private lessons which went well. Finally, after the private lessons, I signed up for the orange reformer series. And you can guess it, they canceled it again due to low attendance. This the third cancellation that Vitality did to me. I have them reassigned my whole series to a different class. We will see what happen and if there will be 4th cancellation. Moral of the story: beware, they can cancel you at any time for any reason and if you have a bad luck like me, you will experience it often with this studio. I'm not sure whose fault it is... perhaps no one. As I mentioned, I really want to like this place, but 3 cancellations? I think that's probably more than the limit of anyone's patience, even with freebies classes (well, those freebies were not real classes anyway. You can get the 30-min orientation at any time by calling them and I'm not sure what to make of the 1-hr class that was taught by a student..) UPDATE: After several weeks of attending the class here, I grow to like the place. No cancellations so far. So much that I'm bumping this up a star! The teachers are to be praised for their effort & teaching skills. I especially like Anne & Sharon whose gentle instructions are always easy to follow. They both do an excellent job in keeping our alignments and postures. I'm still on the fence of whether I will continue, but my opinion of this place has changed for the better. read more

As an update: My package of 7 classes was purchased on Groupon for $49.00. I've found that a lot of businesses try to skimp on the service when you use Groupon, so i was DELIGHTED when the ladies at Vitality Pilates told me that I could expand my package from Groupon at a discounted rate. Their normal rate for classes 2X's per week for 7 weeks was $269 ($19/class) The Groupon deal gave me 1X per week for 7 weeks for $49 ($7/class) They allowed me to add an additional class per week for $11.50/class So, for $137 I got 14 classes, an average of $9.79/class. I encourage all of the other Groupon Groupies to take advantage of this! What a bargain! read more

A little over a year ago, I hurt my back (it turned out to be a pulled muscle, but at the time, I thought someone had run me through with a pitchfork). I have been a rower for many years, so I thought I had good core strength--turned out that I did, but I didn't know when to "activate" it. After a week of moving around *very* gingerly (and whining a lot), I decided to take a friend's advice and see if Pilates would help. Vitality was close by, so I started going twice a week. Good call on my part. Both of my instructors (one of whom possessed encyclopedic knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system) made a point to check in with me during class about how my back was feeling, and within a few weeks, my back didn't bother me at all. I also found--when I started rowing again--that I was sitting up better and engaging muscles I hadn't been using before. I haven't tried other studios, so I can't compare Vitality to them, but then I don't have a reason to. The quality of instruction is excellent, the facility and equipment is well maintained (the worst thing I ever smelled in there was me--certainly no mildew), and staff is great. I have been going to Vitality for five (5) years. The instruction at Vitality is superior to other studios I have tried, the teachers have completed more training, and have a deep understanding of how different bodies work. Because the classes are small, you get solid, individualized attention. For me, this attention is worth paying for. When I started at Vitality, my goal was a flatter stomach and stronger abs. I got that. Today, after having been in a car accident, I am getting therapy that rebuilds my strength in every class. I have also started working with Marie Lynah who teaches Pilates and does medical massage. Her ability to help me heal is unsurpassed. As with my fellow Yelpers, I also took advantage of the Groupon deal and have been going to Vitality Pilates once a week. I really like the Mt. Baker location as it is only 5 minutes away from my house! The studio is immaculate. Online scheduling is pretty easy to use. On top of that, all the instructors I've taken a class from are fantastic! They are extremely helpful, hands-on, and pretty funny. I'm not sure how I am supposed to continuously squeeze Pilates into my absolutely overloaded exercise regimen (gym, soccer, and Bikram yoga to name a few), but I totally appreciate how Vitality Pilates Studio has introduced me to the wonderful world of relax/flex/breathe all at the same time! read more

So I waited a while to see if I gelled with this place. Well thanks Vitality... because of you, "gelled" just isn't the right word for me these days. I'm just 5m post partum and I can already start to feel my guns coming back! I did 2 intro series and am now a full fledged member. I go 2 to 3x per week and I'm for sure seeing my body change (return). They have a dope fresh website that helps you calendar all your classes and keep easy track. Way better than any fitness scheduling tool I've used. Their instructors are all incredibly consistent, warm, and encouraging. It's a beautiful space with great equipment and lighting. I came, I stretched, and I conquered. Used a Groupon and came once a week. It was a nice, small facility with an upstairs and downstairs. Very neighborhood feel to it with people who lived nearby. It was an intro class so it wasn't strenuous for a person who works out 3 times a week already. But it was a good intro into the world of pilates. The teacher use to teach children's ballet so sometimes I felt that way but that also made her patient and animated. read more

I highly recommend Michele as a physical therapist. I'm a stunt performer and avid martial artist, so pain and injuries are nothing new to me. I've also accrued neck injuries through a couple motorcycle accidents, and haven't had a day without neck and shoulder pain. I've neglected physical therapy over the years, and soon realized how much of a fool I was! After going to Michele, my body is starting to feel better than it has in the past 3 years. From the first day, my neck started feeling better. She worked with me to understand a realistic set of goals, and helped mapped out a detailed set of exercises and stretches that I can do both during my appointments in the studio and at home. Her pilates-influenced physical therapy fits very well with my martial arts training, and I've worked her exercises into my training regiment. Already, even through simple things like posture and building core muscles, my whole body is starting to feel (and look) better, and gives me hope that I can keep doing the things that I love with more knowledge and respect for my body. The studio is beautiful, with aerial fabrics hanging from the ceiling and big windows illuminating a hardwood floor. The Mount Baker location is great, with independent businesses and cafes nearby and a park across the street. read more

I had a really positive experience at Vitality. Adena was an awesome instructor and I thoroughly enjoyed working with her. I bought a groupon for an introductory series, and then bought a second one to double my classes and attend 2x per week. They have a great online schedule that is easy to use and its super convenient to schedule and reschedule classes. Each instructor has a very different approach and method, so I highly suggest you get a word of mouth recommendation from a current student about an instructor before you commit to several weeks of classes with them. One of the instructors did not seem to mesh well with other students in my class. They do encourage you to attend the intro series more than once, which is probably true for a lot of people. With taking 2 intro series simultaneously, I felt like I had a big advantage over the other people in my class and I progressed quicker than the rest, even after a pretty major surgery only a few months before. If you are going to start pilates, a few times a week is DEFINITELY worth your while if you can commit. I unfortunately had to stop after the intro series was over because of cash flow issues, but I have every intention of returning some day soon when we are in better financial shape. I expect I will need to retake intro series again to get back my skills that i am losing sitting on the couch writing yelp reviews! read more

Michele is the physical therapist and Michele ROCKS! I have been going to PT at Vitality for about 4 weeks now and I totally love it. Pilates exercises are the basis of her treatment philosophy, so you spend a good amount of time learning about core muscles and how they work to stabilize the body and prevent injury. I am especially enjoying the exercises done on the Reformer, a big spring-loaded contraption that improves both strength and flexibility The studio is beautiful and the location couldn't be better. The front desk staff are great. They even called my insurance company for me and figured out my insurance benefits. Vitality offers a variety of classes, including an intro pilates series so you can learn all the basics. Call early though, I've heard they book up quick! read more

Definitely would not recommend for the new students who also had a pilates experience at other places. They have very limited schedule for intro classes and doesn't let you to move on next level unless you take 4-5 classes which is a waste from someone who had previous experience at other places. The studio is very nice, as are the instructors. I had always wanted to try Pilates so I got the Groupon Package of 7. I signed up for a Weds mid-day class. The first class no one else was there, so I got a private lesson. After that they canceled it, so the only other classes I could get into before the deadline were evening classes, which I wasn't wild about, but whatever. I wound up only going to one more class. I work with a personal trainer and take some yoga classes and I didn't find that it offered me anything new. All the moves (poses? positions?) were the same, just not as hard. I'm sure it gets more challenging eventually, but I didn't even break a sweat. IMHO, if you're interested in flexibility, balance, and strength then a good yoga class will provide that. . I could be making this up, but I think Joe Pilates was the first (or one of the first) people to emphasize 'core' strength to the Western folk back in the day. But now that's de rigeur for any trainer/instructor/fitness video. I suspect it's good for people with chronic injuries or those who are new to exercise in general; a great deal of attention is paid to correct positioning and the instructors are very gentle. People who are intimidated or self-conscious in regular gyms would probably like it. But if you're in reasonable shape and/or have worked out regularly in the past, then I think your fitness money could be better spent elsewhere. read more

The instruction is great but the prices are not. I pay almost $150 per month for 2 group classes per week. It is almost impossible to find an open class at a time that I can actually make it to the class. They seem to have more intermediate students than they do classes available. Moreover, they are constantly changing their class schedule: every time I get a slot that's convenient they go a change the schedule and I lose my place. I feel like I'm being ripped off. Definitely not renewing after my year is up. If you had asked me 6 months ago I would have rated them 4 stars. 5 for the instruction and 3 for the class schedule. However, when I can't even get into a class, the quality of instruction hardly matters. read more

I just had my first reformer session at Vitality Pilates in Mount Baker with Melanie. It was wonderful! I call myself about "intermediate" in Mat Pilates, and wanted to advance and begin using the Reformer. Melanie's style of teaching was perfect for me. I believe in taking Pilates very slowly, and very deliberately. She was totally into keeping us safe, and being very slow and deliberate, which actually provides a much better core workout. I've only gone once, however, on after my first appointment I can feel the HEALING POWER. Seriously folks. I went to Pilates at another studio and left like I was walking through a revolving door - it was in & out - don't stay too long. The PT was great - she actually took the time to get to know me and my rehab goals. I can't wait to see what my next appointment brings. Andrew was very helpful with helping me resolve my previous concerns. The instructors care about the students safety and need to clear the advanced level classes prior to letting them sign up. So my tip is if you want to take all the fun innovative advance classes.. talk to you an instructor. This studio is tucked away in the Mt Baker neighborhood. Parking may be a bit challenging (Although I've always managed to find something)... so my other helpful advice would be to arrive early for class to ensure parking. read more

Michele is a miracle worker. I had been suffering from severe vertigo for weeks due to a fall during an aerial rehearsal. Chiropractic adjustments had done nothing to alleviate it. I have been taking classes here for about three years. I love this place. The studio is airy and bright, and the staff are friendly. The fellow students are sociable as well, and if you go for a few sessions people will remember your name. It's a real neighborhood place. I've never had a bad instructor there (well, once, but she was subbing). My favorite instructors right now are Melissa, Sharron, Meg and especially Christine. Take the Introductory Series with Christine if you can. She designs very thoughtful work outs and gives very clear and descriptive cueing that helps you to access muscles you didn't know you had conscious control over. But really all of the instructors are very well trained and pleasant. You can't just drop in for a class though. You have to commit to a monthly membership or an introductory series of classes. It's a little pricier than the yoga studios I went to in the past, but then the classes are limited to 7 to 8 students, so you get a lot of personalized attention. Once you get your membership you can sign up on-line for the classes you want to attend. If you miss a class you signed up for without letting the studio know in advance, you are charged $15. I find this very motivating to actually go work out, but some people probably find it very annoying. Oh, and they also have a Phinney Ridge location, and you can take classes at either location with your membership. read more

My relationship with pilates is as follows: When I was training for college soccer, I tried it out as an attempt to deter injury but never attended a studio. I felt it was a good compliment. However, individual pilates is not cheap, so I tried to incorporate pilate movements into my daily routine. My efforts were admirable but self motivation only goes so far! Eventually I started practicing pilates at Vitality Pilates in Mt. Baker due to its proximity to my parents house. My first impulse was to try the the Props Class but I felt a little lost. Then I tried the Intro to Reformer Class. This was a definite improvement for me! The only problem I had was drifting off half way through class....classes seemed more mediative than challenging. I carried on like this for some time before I discovered that dosing off in class was not a reflection of poor instructing, but rather a flaw in my scheduling. I was not cut out for the early class! After that change, I actually felt my posture improving along with my sense of stability and even more notably my mood! Although I no longer live in the neighborhood, I continue to sign up for class here. This is a gem of a place. It's equally inviting to the young and the old! The instructors are open and engaged. Each has her own unique personality/style. I personally enjoy Ann and Christine, both have a very holistic, fluid approach. (I think they were both dancers!) Also the scheduling staff is accommodating and extremely patient with individual scheduling needs. I'd highly recommend this studio to people looking for a relaxed environment where the staff is informed and attentive....and not just saying this for a free water bottle either, although that is plus:) read more
