Having been urged to find a certified Stott Pilates instructor by a friend in Toronto, I finally found Jessica, at Emerald City Pilates. I was skeptical at first. What were these strange contraptions? Would they really make a difference in my core strength? Jessica is the real deal. Jessica begins the process by completing a 'whole body' assessment of your strengths and areas for improvement as well as trouble spots - mine was my low back. She creates a comprehensive program that is completely customized and encourages work that you can do from home. Her private classes are never the same and are challenging and fun. After a few months of working together, I am stronger, have much better posture and I am able to address my 'trouble' areas with exercises and stretching techniques at home. In addition to being a super qualified Pilates instructor, Jessica is also well organized and reliable. Nora is amazing she is my Pilates instructor at 6 am twice a week what a difference she has made in my flexibility. I came to Emerald City Pilates due to some lower back pain I was experiencing in my regular workout routine. I had several sessions with both Ellen and Jessica (the owner). I was very impressed with their coaching and they seemed very well versed on the human body. The sessions are private & one-on-one and really focused on my specific needs and on exercises that would specifically help my back issue. I definitely feel as though I have a much better understanding of my body and I have already begun to experience less back pain during my regular exercise routine. I've been going to weekly sessions at Emerald City Pilates for a few months now, following months of inactivity due to illness and injury. The sessions have really helped loosen open up my shoulders, ribcage, and mid back, which have been problem areas. My main instructor is Natasha. She always starts the session off with a check-in about how I'm feeling, and then tailors the session based on whatever I say. She's responsive to feedback if I don't feel like an exercise is working for me, but also encourages me to improve my form, etc. She is very aware of how I am moving through the exercises. I've also worked with Lindsey, as well as the owner, Jessica. All three have slightly different teaching methods, but I enjoyed working with each of them, and they are all highly qualified and skilled teachers. As far as the studio in general, I pay by the month, which gets me a reserved weekly time. I've only had to reschedule once or twice, but it has been hassle-free. I recommend this practice, and wish I could go every day! It's a great way to start the day, and a good complement physical therapy and/or to other exercise programs. read more

I've been following Jes as she's moved between studios the past 4 years and I'm super excited that she finally has her own studio. I race triathlon professionally, and the skills Jes teaches me are exactly what I need for injury prevention and to make me more efficient at my sports. She is extremely intuitive and can adjust the session to her client's needs. She's also firm on doing things the right way. Plan to spend some time figuring out how to fire the right muscles before your doing anything crazy, Jes won't let you get away with slop. Working with Jes is always fun. She has a great sense of humor; it's common for me to screw up an exercise because I can't hold my posture while laughing. The one-on-one sessions are great because Jes can work specifically to your needs, but the mat classes are small enough (limit of 5) that she can modify exercises for everyone in the room if needed. I recommend starting with the private sessions so you can learn how to do things right. read more

Jes is that unique instructor who works with you to understand the particular needs of your body. I have scoliosis and don't fit into "cookie cutter" classes, and Jes understands my unique needs and challenges. She takes the time to explain things and work with me one-on-one. I feel lucky to have found someone with a stellar knowledge of anatomy--and a keen understanding of how to work with my specific body type to get results. I am so sad I had to move out of Seattle, because I loved coming here! I chose to sign up for the one-on-one pilates training once a week, because I'm not about to haul my pudgy self to a room full of professional yoga-ists (sure, that's a word). I started by telling them how deeply inexperienced I was, and that I was also looking to reconnect with my body after trauma. My consultation was great and they totally understood what I was looking to do while making sure I understood what pilates is, and setting proper expectations with me. I started with one instructor who was great, but she left suddenly after a few appointments. I was switched to Jessica after that and she is awesome! She tailors her approach to your personality, and is the perfect mix of professional and fun! I also felt like she fully recognized how awkward it can feel to have your legs over your head (kidding) and made it a point to always make me feel comfortable. I HATE working out but Jessica somehow managed to kick my butt into shape without me feeling it - how cool is that? She immediately cued into my IT spine, and helped me work on lowering my shoulders, loosening my neck, and straightening hips and my hunched spine. Not only that, but Jessica has a deep understanding of the human body, specifically spine and hips. I work in healthcare rehab informatics in hospitals, and I am no stranger to biology, but she explained in detail what was going on in my body specifically (complete with an awesome visual aid), and how we were going to address those body concerns. You'd be hard-pressed to find a healthcare professional in a hospital with that level of dedication and communication these days. I felt like I walked away with a better understanding of my own body, and much better posture. She also made me sore in muscles I didn't even know I had, and knew or created the perfect exercise to target specific muscles - like a Pilates ninja! The online scheduling and payment made it super easy to schedule whenever I wanted, and it actually works. I would recommend Jessica AND Emerald City Pilates to anyone wanting to get in touch with and in control of their body, while transforming it into a better, more comfortable you. read more

I was in town to present at a conference, and I wanted to find a studio that could fit me in for a few sessions very early in the morning. I'm so happy that I found this studio-- Lindsey met me at 5:55am two days in a row. They were wonderful sessions and Lindsey was fabulous to work with-- I felt fantastic and much more able to handle those convention days that required 18 hours on my feet! I've taken Pilates in many, many places, especially in Los Angeles, and I can safely say that Emerald City Pilates is great! It's a beautiful, cozy and welcoming studio, conveniently located. Jes, the instructor, is very involved in the sessions. She gives plenty of personal feedback to improve your practice and she really, really knows what she's doing. I've had two instructors at Emerald City Pilates, and both Charlene and Jessica are AWESOME. It had been a long time since my last Pilates session, and I was having some serious performance anxiety. Char was so warm, but she definitely gave me a great workout - I felt it in my abs for a couple days, for sure. Jessica may be an actual miracle-worker, because after what seemed like a few nothing-exercises with a ball and my foot (note: but not football), my lower back was somehow magically free of pain for the first time in about...well, 15 years. It was absolutely remarkable, and Jessica was also really fun, to boot. Both instructors are great, and Emerald City is well worth a visit if feeling great about yourself and physically strong is on your list of New Years' Resolutions for 2016! read more

I stopped going here for a month, because I was busy doing other stuff and boy do I regret it. I really feel like I'm taking care of myself when I come here and I'm not the least bit scared that I'm injuring myself, because I trust the teacher. Also, this is a place where people of all ages - not just fit 20 year olds show up. I just recommended that a friend of mine come here and she's 70 and she's doing it and loves it. read more

I started going to Emerald City in October '16 until I moved from the area this month (June '17). I really enjoyed all my classes. I rotated through multiple different instructors because of my schedule changes, and I liked them all. Some are definitely more experienced than others, but if you ask for what you want (stretching vs. work out vs. healing) they'll pair you with the right person. Classes are definitely pricey, but I felt like I got the value for my money. I was also brand new to Pilates when I started and that was not an issue for them. I made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. Emerald City paired with eating better (they have a nutritionist) and walking around the city helped me lose 15lbs and feel a lot better! Non-pilates related: Jessica, the owner, is really friendly and puts on cute wine nights and other activities for regulars. She also changes out the art monthly, so it's a very pretty space. They always keep the space clean, and it doesn't smell like "work out" like other gyms/studios. read more

I tried Pilates with Char because they had a great deal online and it is very convenient to where I live. I fell in love with Pilates and am now addicted. I see her once a week and I have seen noticeable changes to my body. She tailors the workout to where I need help (lifting my butt!!) and changes them each week so that we do something fun and different. She also educates me about the different muscles and tells me what I can do differently to stay in better shape. She is super nice and flexible and it is a very low-stress atmosphere, but I still get a great workout. I would definitely recommend Char to anyone interested in personal training!! read more

I started taking Pilates with Char about a year ago. I had injured my shoulder and a co-worker had suggested that I try Pilates. Char is absolutely great to work with. She tailored the sessions with my injury in mind. I started to make progress with my injury and saw improvement in my posture relatively quickly. Char has a great way of explaining the different Pilates poses that helped me to understand how to do them. She is very knowledgeable about Pilates and the positive effects that it has on the body. The studio is clean, quiet, and located close to the Sculpture Park which is convenient for me. I would highly recommend Char and Emerald City Pilates. read more
