Then we connected to our breath. As we breathed, Uma introduced ahimsa: Nonviolence. Non-harming. For tonight: Be ABSURDLY kind to yourself. Speak kindly to yourself. Move freely. Smile. Play. After all, this was Friday-night yoga! Then came a first for me in a flow class: Face yoga. Squint the eyes and nose. Relax. Smile as wide as possible. Relax. Then, a gentle warm-up. A few Cat-Cows. Sun A. Next, Uma set us free: Explore. Smile. Do what feels good in your body. Sun B followed. In Warrior II, Uma paused for a little mythology: Virabhadrasana takes its name from Virabhadra, the warrior created by Shiva. Fun fact. Then...back to the flow. Add the vinyasa. Skip the vinyasa. Play. Once we were open and vibrantly alive, Uma paused again. Introduce yourself to the yogis beside you. Say hello. Give 'em a high-five. Then, back to the flow. Uma's energy filled the room. And yes, joy is contagious! Eventually, Uma guided us into Savasana. A cold, wet towel at the top of each mat. And then, stillness. The Music: Think songs like Shape of You reimagined through Carnatic music. Familiar enough to recognize, with a rhythm that moved the whole room. The Tribe: This was not a room of people pretending not to notice one another. We smiled. We played. We exchanged names and high-fives. After class, still moved by the energy, I introduced myself to Uma and asked her for a fun fact. She had recently found the time and space to complete yoga teacher training. Then came the real surprise: This was the first class she had ever taught. Her first! You would have never known. Uma grew up practicing yoga beside her father. Years later, that practice found its way through her and into this room, a room full of yogis smiling, moving, and helping welcome her into the next chapter. The Space & Place: Bright. Colorful. There are plenty of girls and guys in the classes I have been to, so don't be shy.

My one hesitation: towel use is inconsistently allowed. My first class back was a full 90-minute traditional class (all 26 postures, twice) with a newer instructor - I used a towel briefly, just for grip during bow pose, and it wasn't an issue at all. In my next two classes, at two different locations, more experienced instructors firmly enforced a strict no-towel policy, citing traditional Bikram purity. What's interesting is that this doesn't match the studio's own history. A 5-star review on this page from about three years ago specifically recommends bringing both a large towel for your mat and a small towel to wipe sweat - and the owner replied directly thanking the reviewer and welcoming them to the community. So towels were clearly fine at one point. The studio also modifies the traditional method in other ways today (music in the 60-minute class, dog yoga), so the current strict enforcement feels selectively applied rather than a consistent, longstanding rule. Worth knowing going in if you sweat heavily or need a towel for grip on certain poses - bring a sweatshirt or wristbands as a workaround, or ask before you book.

Stopped by Sunday Pilates for a much needed Pilates sesh, and unfortunately, this studio fell a bit…read moreshort of my expectations, and what I consider the the core philosophy of Pilates - to rehabilitate and strengthen the muscles. I'll preface this by saying I consider myself an intermediate level when it comes to my Pilates/lagree practice, with close to 100 classes under my belt and one year of experience in different studios in LA. I was excited seeing all the wonderful reviews, beautiful photos of the studio, and the Allegro 2 reformer (which I use every week), but instead of classical Pilates, this felt more like a Tracy Anderson-type exercise class where you're just kind of blindly following along what the teacher demonstrates. The class I took was very fast paced and an excellent cardio workout, but I could barely tell what the teacher was demonstrating (since we were all lying down on the reformer), and I could tell that quite a few of the other students in the class seemed to be struggling too, since everyone was doing a different version of the exercise being called. Most of the class was leg focused, with 30+ minutes of just jumping off the board and doing different leg exercises in the air before landing. While I understand that a light spring load was necessary for such a long leg-focused workout, I also found it dangerous since there's much less resistance, and a lot of us were slamming the reformer on accident or landing incorrectly/harshly, which can cause serious injury. Abs and arms were fine for me, but I definitely saw some other students who were struggling or completely could not do the exercises at all. The teacher didn't walk around or correct at all the entire class, and I felt like a lot of us could've benefited from extra attention given the high injury potential of the exercises we were doing. Front desk was nice but....really not attentive, and completely forgot to do intake + liability waivers for new clients. I had to remind her that I was still waiting to fill out the forms after class, and instead of finding online/physical paper forms (which most studios in my experience always carry), she asked us to go through our email/the website to find the forms ourselves and fill them out on our own time. Definitely a bit disappointed considering how much I wanted to love this studio and regularly incorporate my Pilates practice on my monthly visits to Reno, but unfortunately, this won't be the studio for me.

All of these factors have made me feel incredibly welcome and supported as a new student. However, one teacher in particular has really made certain that I will keep coming back long after my new student special has ended. I have predominantly been a bikram method yogi previously because I consider myself to be choreographically challenged and I always have trouble following along with all the changing movements of yoga classes. I often times get exasperated and anxious, feeling like I simply can't keep up, nor do I know how to adjust myself when I get off track and lost. However, the instructor Kat Ames has really helped me feel hand held and guided with the most incredible patience trying to help me understand how to really drop into every posture she recommends. Her kind corrections and adjustments feel gentle and supportive and I love how she actually SEES me and is paying attention to what I am doing - like my experience as a student in her class truly matters. Thanks to Kat I am learning new ways to use yoga tools like balls and straps and I can thoughtfully notice whether a posture is really softening the part of my body we are targeting because my teacher uses language that is so relatable and specific. Not to mention, I absolutely love it when she breaks out her sound bath bowls. They just make me feel like I am relaxing in another dimension. As a yogi I prefer the heat should come from within...One student even complained when she walked in, I was like, "yes"! Only then did they open a window. The teacher was okay but it's never okay to use profanity of any kind in a class situation and it's quite offensive. Considering I was a first time student she should have watched herself. In the end the class itself was wrong for me; too many props used. My Yogis always taught me that props are not a good idea...and I agree somewhat. I have a block and a strap that can be handy when I've returned to my mat after many falls and severe injuries. I've been a Yogi for 24 years. I several advanced training courses that I've taken over the years. I attended the "Harvard" of Yoga schools in 2005. It's called White Lotus and is located in the stunning Santa Barbara. In a few years I will be opening up my own Yoga Studio in Southern California, I so miss my Cali, not the taxes just the vibe... Every now and then I go back to the Bay Area to teach private classes to my loyal students. The location of this place is in the busy midtown area of Reno. Thankfully the parking wasn't a issue on a Sunday at 3. The studio was very nice and clean.

Not only does this Lagree studio provide a challenging workout, but there is such a sense of community. The owners Amie and Carli have taken the approach of cultivating a space open to anyone. There are weekly and monthly events. There are educational talks about menopause, pelvic floor, pregnancy. There are challenges that keep you motivated. But the most amazing part of Peach, is the teachers. I have gone to many Pilates/Lagree studios in Reno and this is the one where I have found such a depth in the quality of teachers. It seems like training is an integral part of Peach, and that shows in the instructors. I do have my personal favorites (looking at you Kaylee, Audrey, Perla, Amie) but every time I decide to take a different teacher due to some scheduling conflicts, I'm still loving the workout. I've also taken some classes with brand new teachers that I'm excited to take again. Finally, the space is absolutely beautiful. It's a delight to work out in with beautiful mirrors, lighting and inspiring quotes.

Until recently, I hadn't taken a class taught by Rachel because I get in my little comfort zone and am afraid to venture out. Rachel inspired me to try something new. I decided to try her yoga class. I have never done yoga and was extremely intimidated. Rachel, however, made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. She has the most soothing voice and personality. Her teaching style makes learning easy and fun. She is patient and gentle in making sure you are doing the exercises correctly. She also does not push you beyond what your body is able to handle. I am now addicted to her yoga class. Rachel is amazing as an instructor, as a person, and as a friend. She is always there to answer questions or address concerns. I am so excited to see her opening her own studio. It is going to be absolutely fantastic, just like her.
