This was a terrible experience. You walk in and you absolutely did not know what to do. Food was a little below standard

Drove from Columbus, GA about 79 miles. We had to wait outside for about 20 minutes because of the long line, but once inside moved quickly through the serving line. We made our selections and because my wife was using a walker and I a cane our trays were carried for us to the nearest table. Great comfort food and desserts. Food for three including drinks and desserts was $42. Thoroughly enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. And bought an Italian Cream Cake to take home. read more

I am so grateful for the internet when it comes to finding out of town restaurants. I was this place pop up on a suggested restaurant to go to in middle GA. After a browse through the reviews and on Google, I showed my mom and husband and they were both interested. From where we live, it was a little over an hour but it was very enjoyable given the back roads and views. The restaurant is easy to find and pops up out of the drive. There is plenty of parking. Now, this is where things got a little confusing for us. There was sign or wait staff to greet us and let us know how the restaurant worked. At first we considered it to be similar to a Golden Corral where you pay up front and then the food is buffet style. It is not! The initial line you see when you walk in is to pay your bill. Head toward the trays instead and grab ya' one. Each food item is individually priced. The entrees will run you around $4 and each side is around $2-3. Plus of course your drinks ($2.25) and desserts ($2.60). For three people our bill came out to be $39.31. I got the sweet ham and I wish I hadn't. I love a good honey ham, but this was wayyyy too sweet for my liking. I did enjoy the sides of mashed potatoes, cream corn, rolls and salads. My mom got the meatloaf. It wasn't to my liking. I enjoy mine a little more salty than sweet. My husband got the BBQ meat and he enjoyed it. I didn't get to try it. They also had baked and fried chicken, which I would try next time. We just wanted to try something different. Restrooms were clean and spacious. The little store next door was nice to roam around in after eating. You apparently can feed the goat as well. Sooo disappointed!! I went in with nostalgic expectations, having eaten there several times many years ago and remembering how fresh and homemade everything was. I wanted to love it, I really did, but it's just not the same. The food may have just been made, but "fresh" as in the true meaning of the word, it wasn't. The vegetables aren't fresh, they are canned (or frozen) and not prepared or seasoned well. The meats aren't fresh either. The "country fried steak" is the premade kind like you'd find in the grocery store frozen section and pop in the oven to warm up. The gravy is the kind you find packets for and mix with water then heat up. The crust on my custard pie wasn't cooked enough. My date got the broccoli casserole and it was just stems with cheese. The fried fish is the pre-made frozen cuts you pop in the oven and heat up. Unfortunately they've done what far too many restaurants have done and found ways to make it easier while sacrificing quality. This is not, or no longer is, home style cooking. Was it edible, yes. Was it enjoyable and memorable, absolutely not. I sure hope to think things would improve, but I'm afraid it won't. With it being one of a few places locals can go to, they've likely accepted the mediocrity. But it's definitely not worth it for those who previously found it worth the drive. read more

I bought a Red Velvet cake and a buttermilk pound cake for my son coming home for a visit and mom's birthday. Mom and I ate lunch while we were there and it was good southern fair. There was a little confusion with this restaurant; all the on-line sites showed a menu with salads, sandwiches, hot meals etc but when we got here it is a walk thru cafeteria style experience. The items are charged individually like chicken was $2.55, with veggies at $1.50 ea, roll was .25,ice tea $2 and slice pie $2.00; everything fresh and homemade! I got piece fried chicken which I don't get often and it was soggy... seasoned but soggy (disappointed). My husband had beef brisket, mashed potatoes, stewed apples and carrots; he was very happy with it! Everything was seasoned well-green beans, carrots, Cole slaw, turnips etc. the blueberry was great! There are big eating rooms you can take your try and find a spot. Lunch for two was with tax $24. So, the wait is really long and in a long line of people, know that going in. Some people get pretty grumpy and vocal about it in line for no reason, relax, they only offer dinner on a couple nights and they're popular. The mennonites are really friendly and welcoming. There are a lot of options and you pay for each option you put on your tray. The prices are reasonable.. at what restaurant can you choose a slice of fresh pie from a selection for only $1.95? This one! The pineapple ham was my favorite part of the meal, absolutely delicious. The potatoes and gravy could use a lot of work and the cornbread was too dense and burnt. A Mennonite restaurant and bakery, Yoder's offers a traditional take on the meat and three cafeteria concept. Located about twelve miles from I-75 in Montezuma, GA, it's worth the trip if you prefer a delicious home-cooked meal over a greasy fast food burger. For about six dollars and change, you get a protein (beef, meat-loaf, fried chicken & catfish were the selections on my visit), rice or potatoes (with or without gravy), two vegetable sides, and a choice of yeast roll or cornbread muffin. I heartily recommend the broccoli casserole and the steamed corn. The fried okra is also quite tasty. Drinks are limited to water, iced tea, and coffee but refills are free and offered regularly by the attentive staff. Be sure to save room for dessert. A bountiful selection of pies and puddings are the first to greet you in the cafeteria line. Or you can stop in the bakery on your way out the door to purchase entire pies, cakes, cinnamon rolls and donuts. Homemade preserves and local wildflower honey are available too. Yoder's Deitsch Haus is impeccably clean, the staff friendly and efficient, and the setting bucolic. Traveling through GA on 75 N, we always look for good eats - Yoder's did not disappoint. The baby goats were a bonus . There are so many reviews of restaurants that sometimes it's hard to choose. But when I saw all the pics of the homemade desserts and homemade bread - I knew we couldn't go wrong. Drove 40 mins out of our way to make it to Yoder's. Most people do not know how to make peanut butter pie.....best I've had in years. This place is awesome! So clean and simple, and the food is very fresh. It's not overly salted like most Southern restaurants. The homemade pies and cakes were phenomenal. I order for dinner the pot roast, mashed potatoes (real, not instant), broccoli casserole, and green beans. It's cafeteria style and there are ladies who come around and refill your drinks. I never even made it below halfway and they were there. This is a wonderful restaurant and bakery that harkens back to a different time, a much simpler time. I drove down with a friend of mine and since we both used to live in Indiana and we wanted a taste of traditional Mennonite food. Let me suggest a unique concept to many of you city-dwellers - where you eat food is almost as important as the food itself, and I don't mean the physical settings of the restaurant, but the locale or place outside the restaurant. I say all of this because as you drive down 75 South and then on 26 West, you feel transplanted. As we got closer to Montezuma, I basically felt like I was back in Indiana, and when my friend and I actually sat down to eat, we could not help grinning as we saw the farmland around us and the two dogs hanging out in the parking lot ... we felt transplanted. The food at Yoder's is simple, rib-sticking goodness. Everything is ridiculously cheap and it is set up like a cafeteria. You grab a tray and cutlery and then you can get a small salad ($2 per bowl); then slices of cake or pie ($1.75 each); then meats (roast beef, fried chicken, sausage, etc. - $2 - $3 per protein); veggies ($1.40 each); and finally a beverage (water, iced tea or hot tea - that's it, $1.45). It is cash only and the portions are pretty filling. I had a piece of dark meat and a piece of white meat fried chicken; two veggies; and the most obscenely, stupidly good slice of chess pie for about $7. I really recommend checking out the bakery next door too. I bought some freshly baked bread and some bottles of homestyle strawberry rhubarb, peach and seedless blackberry jams. Delish. read more

Some friends of mine, and I went hiking and made an intentional pit stop here for lunch. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get here, so we knew we had to catch the afternoon opening. We sat in the car for about 45 minutes, which was fine because we were tire as hell after our hiking adventure. Now, just between you and I, we actually ended up unknowingly committing a crime as we each picked up several pecans off the ground on the property and proceeded to snack on them while we waited on them to reopen. Anyway, the locals started rolling in at about 15 til reopening time. So we got our act together and lined up with them. Once we were outside of the car, the smell then lures you towards the door and then inside only to see the baked goods. Just about anything you can think of is being baked here. They even had a section with their day old bread, cookies and cake slices on sale. We all grabbed a few pieces and Bev got an entire Caramel Cake that was some kind of "Did my grandmama bake this cake" good! We all ordered different things, but I think the Fried Chicken was a big hit at out table. The salad was just a regular old salad, but the dressing was soooo good! And rightfully so, since they make/bake/cook/create everything that they sell. The Roast Beef was tender and moist. Everything was good, fresh and filling. Even the gravy was good. Now that's a good sign! If no one has told you this little secret, let me be the first to do so. When eating Soul Food or Southern Food. Try the gravy all alone. If it's excellent, then your food should be good as well. Honey child, a good gravy can change your life. So surely it can change the taste of rice, macaroni or a pork chop.. Now back to the crime we committed....We asked if we could pick some of the pecans off the ground to take with us and were told no. So I think it only fair that I tell management that your employees had cell phones. And they were on them talking all in the buffet area! Hmmm! LOL. read more

I read a piece over the summer from one of my favorite small town newspaper columnists, where he bemoaned the fact that many Georgians consider Macon "South Georgia." In that column, he noted that it is farther from Dalton to Valdosta than it is from Washington to New York City, and that in order to get from Washington to New York, you have to go through a whole other state (Delaware), and what a shame it was that many Georgians never make that trip. That distance analogy stuck with me, as did his recommendation of a Middle Georgia stop (on the way to South Georgia) in Montezuma to eat at Yoder's. Well, on a recent whirlwind through the state for work, I had the "opportunity" to make that very drive from Valdosta to Dalton, and also to eat at Yoder's. This is quite the operation for a restaurant that is quite honestly in the middle of nowhere. It's about 15 miles off of I-75, and yet despite their somewhat remote location, they maintain a 60+ seat restaurant, bakery, and gift shop. The food is served cafeteria style, so you grab a tray, help yourself to pie (yes, you want the pie), and are served by some sweet, smiling Mennonite ladies, pay, and then take a seat in the country-decorated dining room. It's impeccably clean, neat, and welcoming. I asked one of the servers for her favorite items on the line that day, and I happily settled for her recommendation of the country fried steak with white gravy. A generous, salty-fried portion, I accompanied it with turnip greens (okay) and fried okra (better than average). It was the giant wedge of pie that set this meal apart, and the pie options were overwhelming that day. They had at least a dozen varieties on display, with Pennsylvania Dutch classics like shoofly, to Southern favorites like Pecan and Chess pie, all of the cream classics (coconut, chocolate, peanutbutter, etc), and a couple of fruit options as well (blackberry, traditional apple, crumb apple). The cost of a meal here is reasonable, but the pie, at $1.85 is a true steal. On your way out, high on pie, you'll be tempted by the baked goods in the bakery, including everything from bread, to pound cake, to cinnamon rolls, to whole pies to-go. I managed to resist the temptation, but next time, I doubt I'll have that restraint. If you find yourself down this way (Andersonville, another must-see South Georgia attraction is just around the corner), Yoder's is certainly worth a visit, or even a detour off of the interstate. read more

Yoders is a pleasant restaurant operated by a family of Mennonites who live in this area east of Montezuma. The food is Mennonite with a Southern flavoring (not something you'll find in most cookbooks, we grant you). Shoo-fly pie is available, but so is fried chicken and a version of country steak. The veggies -- green beans, limas, squash, mashed potatoes, etc. -- seem fresh and are served hot, along with everything else, on a buffet line that gets very busy from about 11:45 to 1:30 each day. The staff is dressed in typical Mennonite attire, full-length dresses with caps. It is a modest but rather charming, antique look. There is a bakery beside the restaurant where you can purchase fresh-baked breads and pastries, and adjacent is a gift shop with a variety of souvenirs, jams, jellies and the like. It is all quite reasonably priced, and, as we mentioned, draws big crowds including, on occasion, busloads of visitors. Across the road and a few miles away is the strawberry farm, where visitors can pick their own fresh berries in season. We've done that, and it's fun. It's also hard to resist eating them immediately. Yoders is about 12 miles west of I-75 and 6 miles east of Montezuma, so if you're zooming by on the interstate, this is a much more engaging dining stop than one of the fast food emporiums that dominate the highways. read more

The restaurant is not in town, but it sits along the road in the middle of Mennonite farm country. It is cafeteria style and run by Mennonites, which adds to its appeal. The women wear head coverings and their clothing is simple and traditional. Yoder's features country cooking: meat loaf, beef, fried chicken, ham, fish, pork on Tuesday, and country fried steak on Thursday. All the entrees are good and it seems everyone has a different favorite. But the country fried steak is delicious. It is very tender and can be cut with a fork. The beef and ham are shredded, not sliced. The servers are very accommodating about half servings, so you can get a half serving of beef and a half serving of ham for the same price as a whole serving of one item. Side dishes include mashed potatoes or rice, and of course southern vegetables including tasty buttered corn kernels, turnip greens, fried okra, vegetable casserole, spiced apples which taste more like a dessert, and green beans. The vegetables are not normally cooked with meat, so any vegetarians in the family should be happy. Note: On Wednesday, Yoder's is open for lunch only. It is closed on Sunday and Monday. read more

We drove 1 and 1/2 hours to try this place out. It's definitely in the middle of nowhere in the beautiful countryside. The outside is very clean. Upon entering you walk into the bakery side. Cakes, cakes and more cakes! All kinds of bread, cookies, doughnuts and little sweets are available for surprisingly low prices. I took a red velvet home. I regret that I only got a half cake and not the whole cake. The cake was amazing. After the bakery is the food bar. Freshly made salads and toppings are on the bar. I didn't see not even one piece of brown lettuce. Sliced pie is next. Several meat and veggies options were available. My husband got a salad, pie, two plates of food, I got a plate and a pie, all of this totaled $32. Very affordable for REAL HOMEMADE food. Yes, you can tell it's homemade with every bite. I recommend the fried chicken, butter beans, mashed potatoes and gravy and broccoli and cheese casserole. Of course, try a piece of pie.
