SO GOOD! The description "old cafeteria style", while technically true, you never had food this good in any cafeteria! Driving North from Florida, we wanted dinner and preferred not fast food, but good food served efficiently. Well we hit that out of the park by ending up at The Oil Lamp. My friend had the chicken & mashed potatoes (these are the real deal!!). I had the beef tips on gravy over mashed potatoes. We shared sides of braised cabbage that had a fair amount of garlic - I will be thinking about it, yes thinking about cabbage - first time for everything. We also shared creamed corn and this is NOT from a can. The corn was so sweet and there was a crunch to it, which only fresh corn can give. Everything looked delicious. I eyed those desserts, but I'd finished my plate and just no more room. I live like 4 hours away, but I'm hoping to time my return trip to return to this gem. Prior to going, I'm not sure why I thought of this place as a "greasy spoon"...it was more of a cafeteria. Much more updated and cleaner than anticipated. Upon entry, you go to the right to get in line and order. There is a sign with daily specials (you can also check out their Facebook page!). Up first are the trays and silverware and then the salad bar. After that are some entrees and sides they dish out for you. We ordered the rib-eye meal which comes with a side and bread but you can add whatever you want! I think it was $29, which at first seemed a little expensive, but my brother and friends assured me was definitely worth it! We also grabbed a drink and some dessert. All of the employees were very kind and welcoming. We went right at 5 on a Thursday evening so there was plenty of seating. The tables were big and there was room for all 10 of us (that's why we went early!) The food...was amazing! The steak was PERFECT. I asked for it medium and it was medium. So tender and flavorful! My brother wasn't lying when he said it was worth it. I also had the loaded mashed potatoes - excellent, biscuit-yummy, and the chocolate peanut butter pie- OH MY! We just ate at the Oil Lamp Restaurant on 401 Courtney Hodges Blvd. It's like a little Morrisons or Piccadilly. Southern style food with generous portions. Scott got a huge hamburger steak. I started to get the fried chicken but got the barbecue ribs. The meat was falling off the bone. For veggies we got mashed potatoes, green beans, turnip greens. Lima beans and broccoli cheese rice casserole. Including both drinks and tip it was right at $35 for both of us. Open 11-8. Quick, easy and filling. And a local business. read more

Just left the Oil Lamp Restaurant in Perry and as always the meal was great as was the staff. I had the steak tips and gravy over rice, cabbage, okra with tomatoes and onions, corn bread muffin. I am taking my apple nut caramel pie home to have later with a cup of coffee. I am stuffed with good food and ready for a nap when I get home. I was visiting the area. I ordered 1 meat plus 3 sides. I received meat, 1 side (black eye peas), cornbread. No cabbage was written on top of the container. I ordered white chicken, turnip, cabbage, and black eye peas. The food was okay. Nothing to write home about. Cornbread was a little burned and dry. I will never go there again. I waited 300 miles all day to have some southern cooking and The Oil Lamp served it up right! It's cafeteria style and being a Yankee I was overwhelmed with the choices. I went with the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, stuffing, turnips, black eyed peas, and pecan pie. It was all really good. And the price was about what you'd pay for dinner somewhere else. The young ladies running the counter and serving the tables were very pleasant and helpful! We were driving to Florida from Indiana and I found this on the map. Ok this isn't going to be on food network anytime soon...........but it should great food at a great price. Family owned, clean excellent value, and super nice people. Its nice to see a place where you can just friggin eat and not have to navigate Achim's Razor. Lots of gravy, gluten, meat, stuff fried, baked, on a steam table and again just drop dead delicious. We used to like this place, but recently, the prices have gone up while the portions have decreased. The amount of meat, especially the sides, is very small. The container for the salad bar is also quite small. Additionally, they charge a 10% fee for to-go orders. read more

Went through Georgia recently and the ladies at the Visitor Center recommended Oil Lamp in Perry. Yum!! So good. Roast beef with all the good sides. When in Perry, Georgia Oil Lamp is excellent. I'm not from Georgia, and I was traveling yesterday with a group of co-workers on a business trip. By noon, we were all starved, and since the Oil Lamp was less than a mile up the road, we decided to give it a try. The end result can be described with one word: Outstanding. The Oil Lamp Restaurant serves southern comfort food, and trust me, you will be very comfortable. It's a cafeteria-style place, where you slide your tray from right to left down the line, selecting from a wide range of home-cooked offerings. All the usual favorites are represented, including a killer okra and tomato dish. What really stood out was the service. This place was absolutely bursting at the seams with southern hospitality, and it's obvious that the owners really do care about their customers. That's a far cry from what we often get up north, where food service workers often act like they're doing you a favor just by acknowledging you. Not here though. I invite you to check out the Oil Lamp for lunch someday, and you'll see what I mean about the food and the atmosphere. I rarely give 5-star reviews, but I did today.
